Open Question: Do all medical schools do interviews as part of the admissions process?
(Thu, 18 Mar 2010 23:34:48 GMT)
I've recently decided to become pre-med, and know little about the application process. Currently I'm finishing up my second year of undergrad, majoring in Accountancy. I'm going to keep that major though and just take the pre-med required classes. I was told to take the MCAT your junior year. Is there anyway I could take it my senior year? That way I could squeeze in as many basic science classes in there. I know it's going to be tough, handling all of this, but I know I can do it. I'm in the honors college at my current university and have maintained a 4.0 GPA my first three semesters. Not to mention I'm here on near full scholarship. What else could I do to give me an advantage over other pre-med applicants? I think having a non-traditional major makes me stand out. I'm also involved in other orgs on campus, as well the President of one. There aren't any hospitals close to where I live and I don't have a car, so I can't really volunteer at any place :/ I did recently turn in a volunteer application at an assisted living facility though. Any other tips you can share would be great. I think I'd want to become an obstetrician. 10 points to best answer! Oh and I'm looking at med schools in CA, just in case that matters, but I don't think it does.

Resolved Question: Help in getting aid for college.?
(Thu, 04 Mar 2010 00:39:19 GMT)
I am a 22 year old that has been attending a community college for about four years now. My major is Nursing and I would like to become a Registered Nurse and work with maternity and pediatrics. I would like to transfer to a university but at the moment I have decided to stay where I am at since the college that I am in is the best in the state of California. The primary reason it is taking me a long while is because I have had a great deal of financial problems throughout my college experience. Of course I have applied for financial aid many times but unfortunately I did not qualify because apparently my working 60 year old plus parents made a lot of money (i.e. parents never gave me money for my tuition, money went to the pay the bills; rent, gas, electric, car payment, etc.). Also the fact that I am a first-generation college adds insult to injury. Now since financial aid will not help me, I have very actively am trying to find a part-time job to assist me with school but am having trouble with that too since I have very little work experience. Fortunately this past May I received a scholarship worth $700 but sooner or later that money will be gone and it will not be sufficient. A this moment my situation has gone completely worse since my parents are planning to retire and would like to move to an apartment community specifically for senior citizens. I am simply looking for any type of advice that will help me so that I can finally finish with school. I want desperately to move out and live in like a dormitory or a small apartment near the college so I can finally become independent. Any ideas on what I should do? Thanks.

Voting Question: What am I thinking? No seriously...?
(Fri, 26 Feb 2010 05:09:08 GMT)
I've had a good life so far: Going to a good high school, no, one of the best high schools in the nation, have a stable family and am living with both parents, am relatively intelligent (at least that's what others say about me), have a 3.4 GPA but in the top 50% of my class... This year, my senior year, I am at risk of failing an entire semester of high school. It's a trend that started in 8th grade... Everyone's telling me to apply the emergency brakes, but it's like I'm in a dream and I do not wish to move myself to do so... I don't drink, smoke, do drugs, or anything like that. I'm about to serve a day of In-School-Suspension since I refused to follow a policy that in my opinion is stupid (no cell phones in class, even if using as a planner...) I'm told I can recover, but it's like I don't want to. Is it because I want to explore what happens if negative things occur in my life or what? I told to work hard but I do not wish to do so. It's like I see high school as not being necessary, even though it is. I'm in the very middle of a line between being successful in life and losing all the progress I have. This isn't seniorits, it's something more serious. I was diagnosed with depression and am taking meds for it, but I have no idea if that is what's causing my problems... Or is it solely my desire to be a failure? Please assist me in interpreting my consciousness...

Resolved Question: Joe Jedlowski, VP Types of personal care provided by senior living facilities!?
(Thu, 25 Feb 2010 05:31:52 GMT)
Joe Jedlowski, explains that personal care (also known as custodial care) encompasses what are known as "ADL”--activities of daily living. These commonly include: Cooking and cleaning eating bathing dressing using the toilet getting around the house (mobility) Additional personal care support may provide assistance with: transportation around the community medication reminders finding companionship participating in social and recreational activities While an independent living senior community does not provide personal care in the home, the various types of assisted living facilities do.

Voting Question: Joe Jedlowski, How do I determine what type of senior housing arrangement is best?
(Thu, 25 Feb 2010 05:29:08 GMT)
Joe Jedlowski, After familiarizing yourself with the types of residential care, it’s time to conduct a thorough inventory of the senior’s wants, needs and goals. Some key issues to consider: Joe Jedlowski,Temporary versus long term care: An older person may go to a nursing home for rehab following a surgery or stroke, then return home. In other circumstances, a senior’s needs are better served by planning a move into a situation that is likely to remain the same for the many years to come. Independence: Can the senior live alone, and more importantly, does he/she want to? Or would living in a more service-oriented environment be more nurturing? Privacy: Independence and assistance generally form a continuum: privacy decreases as the need for assistance increases. If the senior's desire for privacy is paramount, independent living, assisted living, or a Continuing Care Retirement Community would all be preferable to a board & care home or a nursing home. Needs for personal care: How much and what kinds of personal or “custodial care” are needed or desired? There are online needs assessment questionnaires to help determine this and then match the care needs with the right type of housing. Needs for medical care: If the senior has a chronic illness that necessitates special medical care, or ongoing services of medical professionals, independent living and even assisted living may not be suitable. Costs: Learn about the financial aspects of senior housing to determine what options are affordable for you. Walk through and evaluate several care facilities or senior communities that seem suitable. Reviewing facility comparison checklists can help you determine which type of environment fits the senior resident’s requirements and preferences. Seek guidance from professionals who are experts in senior housing issues such as medical social workers, case managers or geriatric care managers. They can help with all phases of this process: identifying goals and values, assessing needs, determining what is affordable, and suggesting appropriate facilities.

I've been searching the internet for information on obtaining a published, printed directory of residential facilities for senior citizens, either in my area or my mother's area. I can find web sites with these listings, but no one seems to offer a printed version. It seems like I've seen such directories before, but can't remember where. She's aging rapidly and we gotta do something soon!

Resolved Question: Preparing For College Items Needed, Insurance?
(Mon, 18 Jan 2010 19:06:10 GMT)
I am in my senior year of High School now and I would like to take the time to prepare for my first year. Whether I go in or out of state, I would like to take some important documents with me such as my Social Security, Birth Doccuments, Passport, Naturalization records and such. I would also like to begin paying for both my own health and Car insurance. Unfortunately I have some differences with my parents that they are not willing to settle and therefore might not be willing to support me through college. I understand that life will be difficult on my own, but I want to take the challenge and learn responsibility on my own. I love my parents, but I think it is time to take matters into my own hands. Can you guys assist me and give me the information I need to retrieve these important documents and insurance. I also plan on getting health insurance from the university. I also plan on getting a job near the end of my senior to prepare saving my money. I also plan on living on campus for all 4 years. Thank You.

Resolved Question: SERIOUS boyfriend issue. Any advice?
(Fri, 08 Jan 2010 21:36:36 GMT)
I met Michael when I was thirteen, and it was love at first sight (as the hackneyed cliche goes). We dated in the eighth grade and were totally into each other, but I had to move out of state in the eleventh grade. While I was gone, Mick experienced some pretty bad stuff. His father died, and because he was his only living parent, Mick had to move in with his uncle. They fought all of the time (his uncle was a terrible racist and alcoholic), and he felt like he was all alone. His only friend ended up being this gay guy named Caleb, and after hanging out for a few months, they started dating. This was Mick's first (and only) homosexual relationship, and he claims that he never had any feelings for men before this. I moved back home a few months after my senior year began, and though I expected Mick and I pick right back up, he was with this guy. He told me that he really didn't love him, but because they had experienced so much together that he felt like it would be mean to just dump him. This was a hard time for me because, though I really loved Michael and he claimed that he loved me, he felt indebted to this other guy. However, he eventually dumped Caleb, told me that his days of spending time with men are over, and we have been in a very committed relationship for the past year and a half. I let his gay past slide and thought that the worst of our times were over...until last week, that is. I visited my local health center to donate blood, and when I answered on the questionnaire that, yes, I had been in a relationship with a homosexual male, the woman's (the one who was assisting me) attitude totally changed. It made me feel like I was dirty or something, and I was not the one who had been in the gay relationship! Mick told me that, while he and Caleb never went "all of the way", they definitely had a very "physical" relationship. Since going to donate blood that day, I have felt very different toward him. Why would it raise a red flag at a blood donation center that I had been with a gay male? Is is because gay males are perceived as promiscuous, or is there an actual medical reason for this bias? Also, how can I resolve this issue with Mick? Though I love him very VERY much, so much so that marriage has been mentioned, I kind of feel strange around him now. Any advice? P.S And please be serious and mature about this situation!

Voting Question: Why are people caring less and less about others these days?
(Fri, 08 Jan 2010 02:05:31 GMT)
It seems now days people are caring less and less for one another. I don't understand it just seem like people are only caring about themselves. Either that or they have no idea how much they can contribute to others. I am only 22 years old i work two jobs one for the state where I am a licensed In-home health care provider for adults with developmental disabilities and the other for a company called Live Home where I offer assisted living to senior citizens. Whenever i get the opportunity i do what i can for Habitat For Humanity and get to as many Relay For Lifes as possible. Two years ago i left my home, job, car, and money to live in homeless shelters in San Francisco and to volunteer my help for the sick and needy. All of this i have achieved for others and Ive yet to turn 24 which makes me wonder..... why are people caring less and less about others these days? Look i know some of you may say its because of the economy, loss of jobs, and family's. But seriously. I am sure you sit on your ass for a few hours a week watching TV. Why not do something to help others instead of that. Now I am not saying i don't sit on my ass as well but when the opportunity arrives i make a conscious effort to get out and do what i can for others.

Resolved Question: Job offer ? with crazy hours, low pay & bad economy.?
(Wed, 06 Jan 2010 01:06:16 GMT)
Hello, I have 20-yrs reception/office support, long term temp job ended in Oct., unemployment will last for another 2-mos. I got a job offer, co. is 5-mins from where I live, the pay is awful, it's half of what I was getting at other companies, it's for a receptionist for a senior assisted living, it'll be a day shift but requires some evenings, overnight (mid-8am) and weekends, you won't know what your hours will be, you have to cover those who call in sick for evening/overnight/wknd, no holidays off, if you have plans on days they need you to fill in for someone your expected to cancel plans and work. With the economy, what do you think, I've been unemployed for 3-mos., now if I take it and it doesn't work out, then I lose my unemployment unless I lie and say it was temporary only. I've gone and did the physical and TB test, tomorrow I have to go get finger printed, is this worth it, I like the location and what they do, I like the job but hate the pay and over-time (covering for others), I'm torn, I feel like if I don't take it, maybe another won't come along for a while, just too many people looking these days and I've made $20/hr at my last job, this job offer is $11/hr with full benefits, they can't say what there raisers are. The receptionist said she's done a few graveyard shifts, in addition to her own daytime shift, that seems impossible to do. Anyone in this type of industry, what do you think of it.

Resolved Question: Is Brookdale Senior Living better than Sunrise Retirement homes?
(Sun, 03 Jan 2010 19:11:42 GMT)
My family is looking to put my grandmother in a retirement home. I work at Brookdale in the restaurant so I know that Brookdale is flashy but the company doesn't take very good care of its residents, especially in Assisted Living. I know there's another retirement community, Sunrise, and it looks okay but I'm not sure if it's any better than Brookdale. Anyone know?

Resolved Question: How do you know when it's time to bow out gracefully?
(Tue, 29 Dec 2009 15:20:59 GMT)
We all have known the person that stays in the job too long or the performer that should have retired years ago....also the person that really needed to have gone to the assisted living place. My question is, what is your red flag or indicator that it is now "your" time to step away graciously? This question is prompted by my hearing so many younger "seniors" say that they will know when it's there time and take appropriate steps.... and when that time is obvious to all around them they still don't have the clue. I want to develop some personal indicator so that I don't become that person and that I don't burden friends and family because I don't see the hand writing on the wall. Your thoughts please. spelling correction: it should read "their time" not "there time" Naomi-In my current state of mind, this is what I plan to do, too. Unfortunately, I've seen too many people that think this way when they are younger but when they are older and really need to step down they seem to have developed a mental filter that does not let them see this clearly. I want a way to continue to see clearly and take the steps I have planned for myself when it if truely necessary.

Voting Question: What supplements can I take?
(Mon, 28 Dec 2009 21:13:39 GMT)
I am 4'9.5" and weight about 146lbs. I need to get down to about to 100lbs to be at a safer weight that is more in the middle of the healthy weight for my height. I have struggled with my weight forever and my mom describes my problem as I being able to just LOOK at a piece of cake and gain the weight as if I had EATEN the entire sheet of cake. I used to take hydroxycut my senior year of high school and lost the weight quick while also maintaining a healthy diet and exercise. I maintained the weight while at college until I broke my tailbone and was told I couldn't run or walk the distance I normally did for about 6 months so it healed. I gained about 26 pounds at that point. I maintained it until I moved down south and gained about another 30-35 pounds. I have two step-kids (live with us only) and a husband but told them that until the weight comes off, I have to put myself first. My diet consists of oatmeal for breakfst with a tsp. of brown sugar, a handful of blueberries and a couple decent sized strawberries, and an 8oz. glass of skim milke; mid morning snack of lowfat string cheese and an apple or other fruit, lunch is a 3oz turkey and about 1/4 cup spinach on sugar free, 100% whole grain bread; mid afternoon snack of low fat string cheese and a serving size of triscuits (low fat); dinner is 4 oz fish or 3 oz turkey/chicken, spinach with vinegarette, and mixed fruit or green beans; night time snack (before 7) is a fat free yogurt or fat free, sugar free pudding. I drink a minimum of 2L of water a day. Once or twice a week I may have coffee (but not because I "need" it, rather just because) or a diet soda. Since hydroxycut was altered b/c of side effects, I have been searching for something to assist me. I have lost about 15lbs in 4 months, but know it should be falling off faster than that. I tried zylotrim and saw nothing. YES I do exercise 3-4 times a week on a run/fast walk with my dog that is usually about an hour long. I have discussed the problem with different doctors (I've moved a few times) over the years, and they always shrug my weight issue off and say it's no big deal even though I fall as obesity 1. What can I take to assist me that's as powerful as hydroxycut used to be or better? I need to get this diet on a good roll so I don't give up. caloric intake is always under 1200...I tend to keep it actually at 1000, but no more than 1200. I have a food diary on my iphone (loseit!). My Oatmeal is 1/2 cup. I keep everything at serving size or smaller. I do have almonds throughout the day and my turkey/chicken does provide protein. I also keep track of my sodium and fat. Everything is sugar free or VERY low sugar. The diet is from my sister's personal trainer. It's very strict.

Resolved Question: Should I feel bad about taking food stamps, I'm trying to find a major difference, food stamps v pell grant?
(Mon, 28 Dec 2009 15:22:55 GMT)
I live in New Jersey, I'm a senior in college (attending part-time) and work a full-time job making decent money. I've recently found out that I'm eligible for food stamps. New Jersey has weird requirements and theirs state, you have to be in college (at least half-time) and working over 20 hours at a job. I meet those requirements, thus I'm eligible for 200-250 per month worth of food stamps. Now to my question, those who consider food stamps a handout, or state they have too much pride to use food stamps. Would you have too much pride to accept a federal pell grant to assist with the cost of school? For those of you who don't know, pell grants are free monies given to those in need to help cover the cost of a college education, up to 5500 per semester. Do you think there's a difference among pell grants (for college) and food stamps (for college), if so please describe. All I have to do is go to the office and claim them, I'm finding myself not wanting to because of pride. On the other hand I know NOBODY would have a problem accepting a pell grants, which could also be labeled a handout on a much larger scale. What would you do in my sitution, should pride even be a factor here? Where did this fine line come from regarding what government assistence? is a handout and what is ok to take, do you consider it all to be handouts? "Food stamps are for those who don't earn enough to EAT. Pell grants are a govenment investment in America's future" Are you kidding me, you're a moron. Pell Grants are for those who can't afford to pay for their own education. Food stamps are for those who can't afford to eat and pay for their education. Maybe you're the stupid one if you can't see the similarities. Ben Dover, maybe if you could think you would realize that to get the food stamps, you must be in college. If I wasn't in college, I wouldn't be eligible. This is for those who try and draw a fine line vs pell grants v food stamps. They're both used for college and you have to be in college just to get the benefit! Pell Grants are based off financial need, it has nothing to do with achievement, same with food stamps! Both you have to be in college with regard to my situation.

Self motivated, independent, a team player, and a problem solver Experience: Music Star -Assisted elementary students for 2 hours every Tuesday with learning to play their musical instrument. Resolved Question: Why does Senator McCain "stand up for seniors" when there are Medicare cuts for private insurance companies?

which doesn't add much but a gym benefit, but does not want seniors to be able to buy into long term care through the government? The fact that nursing homes and assisted living facilities cost from $2,000-$5,000 a month and up. Why is it that McCain sides with long term care insurance companies in this instance? If he so protective of seniors? This would be great and it would not take their whole life savings just to be put on welfare in the end. McCain is all for the insurance companies. Why are people so naive?

Resolved Question: Looking for someone 70+ to answer a few questions for me..?
(Thu, 03 Dec 2009 15:51:42 GMT)
This is a Seniors Interview project for Human Services. If you have a few minutes, please help me out! Thank you. 1. Do you enjoy your time retired as opposed to when you were working? 2. If you are living in an assisted residence, do you enjoy living there? What do you miss the most about being on your own? 3. Has there ever been a very special moment in your life? 4. Are you happy with the path you have chosen for your life? 5. What hobbies did you have as a teenager as opposed to the ones you have now? 6. At this stage in life, do you find it difficult to communicate with the younger generation? 7. If you had been given a choice, would you want to 're-do' or re-live your teen years in the period of time that you did or would you want to re-live the teen years now? 8. How do you feel 'parents' are raising their kids now as compared to when you were raised? 9. Do you think that a 'husband and wife' should be expected to have children and a family? 10. Are you an only child or were you raised with brothers & sisters? 11. Do you have many family members come to visit or do you visit your family often? 12. If given a choice, would you rather be involved in some form of activity with the youth or would you choose to be active with members of your own age? 13. What do you think are the pressures of parents in today's society in dealing with everyday things? 14. Would you have any questions for me to possibly answer for you? Thanks for your time! :) If there's no one 70+, 50+ will do I guess!

Resolved Question: Do I stand a chance of getting into Colgate?
(Wed, 02 Dec 2009 04:54:26 GMT)
I was thinking of applying to Colgate University? My stats; Coming into senior year, I had a 3.06 Unweighted GPA. My most recent SAT Combined score: 1310. I plan to retake it though I'm on the debate team, fashion society and volunteer at an assisted living home I'm not sure how strong of a candidate I will be. Should I just withdraw my app now? For senior year, I'm taking two APs: Stats and Environmental Science combined meaning ONLY the Math and Reading sections

Resolved Question: Need advice on senior guardianship.?
(Wed, 25 Nov 2009 19:18:26 GMT)
So I received a call from a social worker that my estranged father was being hospitalized for dementia. They want me to fly out there so that I can be assigned quardianship and be able to place him in an assisted living home. I have no idea what to expect or what I should be asking. What do I do with all of his personal belongings like car, home and personal items? What about his financial stuff? Can someone please give me some advise? What is the process? Do I need to hire someone for help? I am in New Mexico and he is in Kentucky...

Resolved Question: Question going out to salon owners or similar business owners!?
(Sat, 21 Nov 2009 05:03:24 GMT)
I would like to open up a "portable salon" offering salon services to people that cannot get out to get their hair done. My idea would be to go to assisted living homes, senior living communities, and individuals that have limited opportunity to get out, and provide basic to advanced services for them, without them having to leave their homes or living areas. I would like to provide haircuts, shampoo sets, perms, and eventually color to these people and allow them to feel good about themselves without all the hassle. What would I need to do to make this dream become a reality? I am already a licensed cosmetologist. Any helpful sites about business licensing, business loans, business plans, ect. or any tips from personal experience would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much for any help you can provide.

Resolved Question: Spiritually wondering? What do you make of hoarders?
(Tue, 17 Nov 2009 03:49:54 GMT)
I have watched with absolute horror of the television program on A & E "Hoarders". I also work in a seniors assisted living complex. I had to clean out an elderly woman's cupboards today because of mice urine and fecal material. This woman is very well off and yet hoards food as if it was going to go out of style. She crams it under seat cushions, under chairs and under her bed. She does not have dementia or Alzheimer's. What kind of spiritual void do some people have that makes them hoard garbage, rotting food and useless paraphernalia even at the risk of serious illness or injury caused by it? Ruth - I am NOT judging her, only trying to make sense of it. I have to make some sort of sense of it because I work with all the residents in the building. By the way, everyone who took the time to answer this one gets a Thumbs Up from me. I do appreciate everyone's input. Thanks. Interesting that neither Ruth nor Barnacle Billetta allow emails to them. Could they possibly be the same people? And if so...could they also be someone named...Trish JPA??

Resolved Question: Don't people realize that for many years ?
(Fri, 30 Oct 2009 05:46:28 GMT)
Why do some people seem to almost welcome or not resist the movement or concept of America toward becoming a communist/socialist oriented nation when they have no knowledge of what it is like to actually live in a nation that is under communist/socialist rule ? I was a Detective in a large U.S. city 30 years ago and occasionally had to interview Russian Senior Citizens about routine matters. Because of the language barrier; I was assigned a russian court interpreter named Alex to assist me in conducting these interviews. Unfortunately , I discovered that Alex had a sadistic streak where he often slipped terms like " KGB " into his russian interviews with these people. I will never forget the look of terror on the faces of these Russian Senior Citizens when Alex used such terms referring to their prior life under communist rule in the U.S.S.R. I admonished Alex a number of times about this and eventually replaced Alex with a russian court interpreter who was not looking to scare these people half to death by reminding them of the communist life that they had escaped from in the U.S.S.R. Don't people realize that for many years many people have fled their communist/socialist nations in order to live a life free of this communist/socialist rule in America but I don't know of anyone who has fled life in America in order to live a life in another nation under communist/socialist rule ?

Resolved Question: What are some of the more popular songs for senior citizens?
(Fri, 30 Oct 2009 03:25:43 GMT)
I am thinking of people in assisted living and nursing homes. The age would be 80-100 years. I would be more for people who are confined rather than younger age groups that are more retirement community people that are 65-80 that live independently and it is a senior residence for their age only and they do not need medical assistance. Do you play music at these homes? I am a musician and I have nursing home gigs. I have been out of practice for a while. I play mostly Bing Crosby and oldies from the 1920s-1940s. Any suggestions for songs, especially Bing Crosby would be helpful. I am 47 and three years away from AARP membership. Acutally I have an associate membership from my 51 year old ex wife. If you are 40-69, you are too young for this to include you music. I am looking at targeting 80 and older. So that would be Bing, Frank, Jackie Gleason, Lawrence Welk, Shirley Bassey (interesting)

Resolved Question: ----Advice Anyone-----?
(Tue, 20 Oct 2009 04:40:31 GMT)
I'm 17, almost 18. I live in California with my mother, brother-11, sister-12, baby sister-3 and mothers ex-husband. 3 years ago when i lived in Oregon, i was physically abuse by my dads wife. (Step-mother) So my mother instantly took me home. When i moved back home, my mother was living with her bf. (at the time-baby sisters father) But things didn't work out and got kicked out. was homeless for 3 months. (summer of 2008) My other brother-11 and sister's-12 father took us in, (i still consider him my step father) and let me tell you: Trailer mobile home, he doesn't clean AT ALL. Theres over 3 holes in EVERY room. About the size of a 16' computer monitor. (3 bedrm moblie home) The roof leaks when it rains and causes mold in the ceiling, and mold in the carpets from getting wet. Due to rain, the roof is caving in and parts of the ceiling board have falling off. Garbage and toys scattered through out the whole house. Dishes stacked a foot high. No one in this house knows what the word CLEAN means except for my mother and I. And its to the point we don't do crap in this house, bcuz if we do, its just until 2 hours it looks like nothing has been done, due to brother and sisters. My mother is in her externship for medical assisting, im a Senior in high school to graduate in January(2009). No jobs. The only one who works is my 'step father' and cant even afford rent, electricity, or food. I love my mother to death, she is my best friend and my guidance, but let me tell you; my mother and 'step father' combined, I am more of a mother to my siblings then they are. My mother does nothing but bitch about the house being a shit hole. And how bad my siblings are doing in school, how they arnt mature or responsible.(And that true) My 'step father' isolates himself from everyone in his room. I cook dinner almost every night. I DO EVERYTHING IN THIS HOUSE. Not even kidding. Ive been dating this guy for over year. And of course, problems with mentally abuse from him, but im doing everything to help him; for he knows he needs to change. But over all guys, this is the most stressful, life experiencing and changing point in my life and I dont know how to handle it. And on top of that, im reconnecting with my father in Oregon, and nothing but memories from my childhood comes back to me. . .and I wont get into that, but it was complete shit. But i will say I understood the meaning of life by the time I was 8. But to wrap it up, im so stressed, depressed, anxiety attacks at least 4 times a wk. Im just loosing it. Thought I would see others in put on this and see if anyone could relate or give advice to organize this point and time. Thanks.

Resolved Question: How do I gain independent status for my FAFSA?
(Thu, 15 Oct 2009 22:55:46 GMT)
I am 18 and have an infant daughter who was born at the end of my senior year. I filed my FAFSA as independent but Financial Aid told me I would be considered dependent because I don't work. I do live at home right now. If I move into family housing with my daughter next fall, they said that still wouldn't be enough to gain independent status. The only thing my parents would be assisting with would be my cell phone bill and car insurance.I will be working part time, in school full time, receiving some type of public assistance (like food stamps), and probably not be receiving official child support from my daughter's father, although he is involved and helping out. We aren't married. What would the determining factor in being considered independent? If I am in family housing, I'm providing for her shelter if my scholarships are paying for our housing.... also, my parents did claim me on the 08 taxes, but she wasn't born until March 09, and I'm filing taxes myself with her as my independent for the 09 taxes.

Resolved Question: How can I go about getting work in the field of helping Senior Citizens?
(Thu, 15 Oct 2009 17:56:30 GMT)
Like an actual job such as in an assisted living facility or residence. Not as a one on one care taker but just as an aide or advocate for them. I am already volunteering.

Resolved Question: What are the tax consequences for senior citizens who have to sell their homes to pay for medical bills?
(Wed, 30 Sep 2009 14:06:28 GMT)
My parents are in their 70's and my father has Alzheimer's. They have decided to sell their home and should clear about 85K from the sale. I would like them to move closer to me (I'm their daugther) and rent a small apartment until we see how my father's health progresses. Will they have to pay income tax on the 85K from the sale of their home? They don't have a lot of income - they live on their Social Security and about $500 from a small pension and an annuity. We were hoping to bank the 85K for future use in case my father needs to go into assisted living when his Alzheimer's gets worse. Thanks.

Resolved Question: Is there a way to legally get past the age restriction in a senior community?
(Fri, 11 Sep 2009 15:10:22 GMT)
My father is a paraplegic and can no longer take care of himself. He currently lives in a seniors only mobile home park. He refuses to go to an assisted living facility and the only other answer s to have someone move in to take care of him. He cannot afford a full time nurse. I have been taking care of him. Is there a legal way I can move in with him? I am not 55 yet. I am 42 and have an 8 year old daughter. My dad has lived in this mobile home for 26 years and refuses to move anywhere else. He says this is his home and he will never move. I have tried to get him to move in with me for a long time now.

Resolved Question: What should the punishment be for murder of a senior by another senior residing in an assisted living facility?
(Tue, 25 Aug 2009 00:17:54 GMT)
An 87-year-old man was charged Monday in the beating death of a fellow resident at a Columbia assisted living community, Howard County's first homicide of 2009, according to police. Earl Lafayette Wilder was charged with second-degree murder and first- and second-degree assault in the attack against James W. Brown, 91, who died Saturday of head trauma, according to authorities. Police said he had been under hospice care after the attack last week. Officers were called about 4 p.m. Aug. 17 to the Harmony Hall assisted living home in the 6300 block of Cedar Lane for a reported assault, according to police. Wilder and Brown -- both residents of the community -- were sitting outside when Wilder began striking Brown in the head before facility staff intervened, police said. Investigators do not believe Wilder and Brown knew one another before the attack, which police said was apparently unprovoked. Brown was initially treated at Laurel Regional Hospital before entering hospice care, according to police. Wilder was taken to Howard County General Hospital for an evaluation after the attack. Police said the charging warrant would serve as a detainer for Wilder, who was being held at an undisclosed facility pursuant to a court order.

Resolved Question: Can someone help assist me with colleges I should put on my "reach" list?
(Wed, 19 Aug 2009 04:34:46 GMT)
Okay, below the dotted line is the info if any of you need to refer to it. I live in the state of GA if that matters any and I am Asian American. I am currently a senior in high school and I will be applying to colleges soon. If possible tell me what colleges should be on my "reach" list, thanks. I want a college which has a good medical program and if possible has an engineering program as well. I need a college which has a good reputation and a college I have a chance at. THANKS. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GPA = 3.2 (unweighted, I go to a magnet school so that means we do not have sports and our classes are arduous compared to other schools, we take all honors level classes and I go to a Health Science and Engineering school) 2 AP Classes taken (1 my junior year and currently taking one right now as a senior) SAT score = 1470 the first time around overall because I was sick when I took the test back in March, on practice tests now I make in the 1800s, usually I end up with an 1840 on the past 3 practice tests I have taken so lets say I make an 1840. Will be taking the SAT on October 10th. Extra Curriculars = 20 volunteer hours community service (helped clean up a lake), did observership from July to August this year at a Doctor's office, Academic Decathlon last year as a junior and will be doing it again as a senior this year, I AM FIT program ambassador for my high school, HOSA officer and I am a member of the ecology club. Don't want to go to California. Plus 3.2 is my unweighted GPA, also my school only offers honors classes and AP classes since it is a magnet school.
