Resolved Question: I need help figuring out my taxes on trading, How to pay less? Am I a trader or an Investor?
(Wed, 23 Sep 2009 15:00:35 GMT)
I started trading this year and I have made about $1,500 dollars which is great but I am trying to figure out how much of this money will be taken by Uncle Sam.
- I know am not a trader (according to what I read online, if this is not true, please tell me), I make about 10 trades a week, but I have a full time job and this is not my main source of income.
- I am not investing for long term gain, I trade on news and sell on news. My long term money is on my retirement plans.
- I Have a scottrade account which helps me with the wash sales adjustments and net profit and loss....
So, the real question is:
- Can I file a Sched C or will I need to file a Sched D?
- What can I deduct if am an investor? (trading seminars, computer, internet connection, trading fees...)
- any other tips that you might have?
Please help....

Resolved Question: How should I set up my retirement investing program.?
(Sun, 19 Jul 2009 16:43:06 GMT)
Hello fellow members. Need just a bit of advice. My company just canceled our 401(k) plan due to low enrollment and higher expenses. I didn't have a lot in there around 4k, as we paid off a cargo plane load of debt in the last couple of years.
I plan to open a Roth IRA and contribute the max to it. What would be my best choice of investments to look at. Should I use a discount broker like Scottrade? I am married, my wife is self employed, owns her own cleaning business. We only have our mortgage as debt, around 114K, both cars are paid off.
After I max my Roth IRA, what would be the best investments for us. We are 48 years old and with no other debt but the house we should be able to save around a min. of 1K per month or so. Where in the very smart people of this forum should we invest our Roth IRA and the money outside the IRA.

Resolved Question: Investment: Does anyone have experiences they can share with me?
(Mon, 05 Nov 2007 08:29:32 GMT)
What I'm looking for is information from your personal experience (so I can learn from it) using: Etrade, Scottrade, Ameritrade, and BuyandHold (dot com), investment websites.
I am not seeking personal financial information, just the lessons learned.
My Initial investment to open an account will be around $5K.
How difficult/easy was it to sign-up, begin trading, and what were the typical fees per amount per transaction?
I plan on investing and exchanging individual stocks, both US domestic and International, in the $500-$1k range or so. This is a hobby (something I can play with when I'm not out partying) and education for now; but the investments are real as they will be another resource towards my and my wife's retirement.
I didn't see anywhere to set up a "fake" account to learn on; if you can direct me to one, that also would be helpful to me.
Thanks in advance.

Resolved Question: I want to invest in mutual funds and in an IRA?
(Sun, 05 Nov 2006 04:12:37 GMT)
I plan to invest in no load mutual funds (s&p 500 index funds) for wealth accumulation and open up an IRA account for retirement. There's many brokerages I've heard of like Edward Jones, Vanguard, Janus, Fidelity, Charles Schwab, TD Waterhouse/Ameritrade, E*Trade, Sharebuilder, Scottrade, etc.
Though I heard ShareBuilder rips people off. I plan to start with between 2K - 2500K each for both my Mutual Fund account and IRA account.
Which brokerages are better for both long term and which one is better for both additonal income and growth?
Plus I've never invested before though I've gotten alot of advice from people who've been investing for 10 years plus I watch the Suze Orman show and I research when I can but frankly I don't think anything will make sense until I start investing...
