Open Question: Did the Gov. give us a separate maintainace decree when they excluded me from his social security and med?
(Fri, 12 Mar 2010 01:05:06 GMT)
My husband and I were living together in the same home when he retired and I was excluded from his social security and medicare benefits because i have not reach retirement age yet. I wanted to file head of household on my tax return because it was clear to me that I am on my own but mainly because we have minor children in the home and need the credits.. I was told I could not do so because my husband had to be living out of the home for 6 months..? Since that is one of the test that must be met and requires that we have "a separate maintanace decree" I just could not understand why the IRS and S.S. don't know or understand that they already seperated us.If we file married , they go in and recalculate our taxes by using my little gov. pension to see how much his S.S. is taxable and I don't think that is fair either since I do not share in any of his benefits. Neither of us have outside jobs. Do you think this "wifeless" S.S.entitlement letter my husband received for himself "only" is considered a "seperate maintanance decree"? Is this one of the reasons seniors would get divorced in their retirement" Shame !Shame!

Open Question: Suppose I punch out my soon to be ex-boss.?
(Wed, 10 Mar 2010 13:07:40 GMT)
Here's my story, sorry if it's a bit lengthy. At the tragic expense of my grandfather's sudden and early death, I've recived my multi-million dollar inheritence earlier than anticipated. He was an executive for Warren Buffets Berkshire Hathaway and bought up several hundred shares of stock while they were dirt cheap. My current financial situation is this: A 41 year annuity of $207'000.00 a year (Actually direct deposits monthly.) Also a secluded cabin in the Hawaiian islands as my permanent residence, and 1.5 Million remaining in uncommited dollars spread out in three bank accounts, that will be my retirement when my annuity runs out at the age of 61. As you can see, I'm a 20 years man and set for life. Further more, and you can correct me if I'm wrong about this, that's why I'm here asking, but it would seem that I have nothing to lose when I go in for my final check. You see, a week from this friday, I go in for my final check. I am assistant manager at a golf course and absolutly despise the boss. She has made the last year of my life miserable, and instead of going out with a handshake, I'm thinking of going out with a literal bang. Because, I live in Pensacola county Florida, and my flight to my new life in Hawaii is 11am a week from friday in Tampa. So, two hours before the flight, I get there at opening at 9am, noone else is there, I get my check, rough her up a bit then high tail it out of there. This is my opinion: Even though Tampa, the location of an airport is a neighboring county, the process of extradition remains nonetheless. So, even if she can tell the police I'm there (Which I do not believe she would know), there would be way too much legistical stuff to be able to get me before the flight takes off. (Even if they did, i could pay my bail, then leave, and consider it worth it.) As single mom collecting child support, we can rule out her suing. She would not only have travel expense that she likely cannot afford, but there's absolutly no way on earth she can afford an attorney who can take on the one I hire. Not to sound like I'm gloating, but I can afford any attorney on earth, she cannot. Expect her to not even consider civil action. I don't like her attitude, but she's not downright stupid. Last but not least, this IS a repost. I'm asking again because last time everyone was talking about extradition. Consider it this way: The DA is going to pay out of his budget, provided by taxpayers, to have me extradited all the way back from Hawaii over a simple assualt charge. He's gonna cover the expense of my arrest in Hawaii, and pay to put me on a plane, and fly me halfway across the pacific just to get to the west coast, than transfer planes on or two times back to tampa? Simple assault charge? I think we can rule out extradition of that distance for 90 % of all crimes. So, am I foolproof. Pea pod: I have to be tried in the county in which the crime was committed. Perhaps your not a US resident, but here that's the way it works regardless of what country's "soil" I'm on.

Resolved Question: Please share your thoughts on this quote from George Carlin?
(Wed, 10 Mar 2010 12:52:01 GMT)
“The most unfair thing about life is the way it ends. I mean, life is tough. It takes up a lot of your time. What do you get at the end of it? A Death! What's that, a bonus? I think the life cycle is all backwards. You should die first, get it out of the way. Then you live in an old age home. You get kicked out when you're too young, you get a gold watch, you go to work. You work forty years until you're young enough to enjoy your retirement. You do drugs, alcohol, you party, you get ready for high school. You go to grade school, you become a kid, you play, you have no responsibilities, you become a little baby, you go back into the womb, you spend your last nine months floating... ...and you finish off as an orgasm.” Thank You, AJ

Open Question: question re lake water storage?
(Tue, 09 Mar 2010 22:38:50 GMT)
i live in a retirement village in australia we have a lake in the village which has a spillway wall for overflow,we have 3 inlet pipes feeding stormwater etc into the lake each pipe is approx 16 inches ( 400 mm) to 24 inches ( 600 mm ) in diameter,at present the water level is at the bottom of each pipe,if the spillway wall was raised by 600 mm this would put 600 mm of water next time it rained, the question is next time it rained would water still drain satisfactorily into the lake even though each pipe was filled with 600 mm of water thank you

Open Question: How long will a Paramedic live after retirement?
(Tue, 09 Mar 2010 11:07:49 GMT)
I have heard (often from many sources) that the post retirement life expectancy of a front line ambulance worker is low, <5yrs. Has anyone else heard this & if so, can a reference be given to support it? Hope to get lots of answers......... Cheers. Just to add a bit for the reasoning behind the idea of a shortened retirement; Shift work. Irregular eating patterns. Irregular sleeping patterns. The stresses involved in the actual job. Periods of relative inactivity interspersed with periods of intense activity. Etc, etc...

(Mon, 08 Mar 2010 15:28:42 GMT)
Individual Tax Cuts: 1. "Making Work Pay" Tax Credit (Sec. 1001, Page 195). In tax years 2009 and 2010, the Making Work Pay provision will provide a refundable tax credit of 6.2 percent of earned income up to $400 for individuals and up to $800 for married taxpayers filing joint returns. 2. Increase in the Earned Income Tax Credit (Sec. 1002, Page 198). Go to the stimulus bill for all the details, but it essentially expands this benefit for the working poor. 3. Increased Eligibility for the Refundable Portion of Child Credit (Sec. 1003, Page 199). In 2009 and 2010, families who don’t earn enough to pay income tax would be eligible to claim the $1,000 child credit. 4. "American Opportunity" Education Tax Credit (Sec. 1004, Page 199). Increases the Hope Scholarship Credit to $2,500. 5. Refundable First-time Home Buyer Credit. (Sec. 1006, Page 202). This extended and increased the first-time home buyer tax credit from $7,500 to $8,000. 6. Temporary Suspension of Taxation of Unemployment Benefits (Sec. 1007, Page 203). This exempts from taxable gross income the first $2,400 of unemployment benefits. 7. Tax Credits for Energy-Efficient Improvements to Existing Homes (Sec. 1121, Page 208). This provides up to a $1,500 tax credit for qualified energy efficiency improvements. 8. Sales Tax Deduction for Vehicle Purchases (Sec. 1008, Page 203). This allows people to write off state and local sales taxes related to the purchase of a new vehicle costing up to $49,500. 9. Premium Credits for COBRA Continuation Coverage for Unemployed Workers (Sec. 6432, Page 348) 10. Economic Recovery Credits to Recipients of Social Security, SSI, Railroad Retirement and Veterans Disability Compensation Benefits (Sec. 2201, Page 336). This was a $250 payment for senior citizens, disabled veterans and disabled people living on Social Security benefits. 11. Computers as Qualified Education Expenses in 529 Education Plans (Sec. 1005, Page 202). This allows college students to write off the expense of computers and software, provided it's for educational purpose and not for games. 12. Plug-in Electric Drive Vehicle Credit (Sec. 1141, Page 212). Allows purchasers of plug-in electric vehicles to write off up to $5,000 of their purchase (depending on the power of the battery). 13. This is a temporary increase in limitations on expensing some depreciable business assets. 2. 5-Year Carryback of Net Operating Losses for Small Businesses (Sec. 1211, Page 221). 3. Extension of Bonus Depreciation (Sec. 1201, Page 220). This extends by a year election to accelerate the AMT and Research Credits in lieu of bonus depreciation. 4. Exclusion of 75% of Small Business Capital Gains from Taxes (Sec. 1241, Page 228). 5. Temporary Small Business Estimated Tax Payment Relief (Sec. 1212, Page 222). 6. Temporary Reduction of S Corporation Built-In Gains Holding Period from 10 Years to 7 Years (Sec. 1251, Page 228). Other Business Tax Cuts: 1. Advanced Energy Investment Credit (Sec. 1302, Page 231). Voting Question: How to travel indefinitely and cheap all over the world?
(Sun, 07 Mar 2010 07:23:01 GMT)
I'm beginning to question just how important it is to live a life where you work, go home, sleep, then go to work again. After all, the dollar is about to collapse so that means retirement funds are essentially no good. I'm starting to think, maybe I should just say screw it, quit work, leave the materialistic lifestyle, and go travel around the world and have as much fun as I can. Can anybody recommend books and websites that talk about how to travel cheap and indefinitely? For example staying in hostels and what type of jobs you can work along the way, and how to get those jobs?

Voting Question: Employment after military career?
(Sat, 06 Mar 2010 23:43:56 GMT)
So say a guy serves in his branch for thirty years. He's got a degree. What does he do when he gets out? Do a lot of companies hire late-40 early-50 year olds with no experience but what they did in the military? Would the retirement pay from his career be enough to live off of without another job? I suppose I'm a bit confused as to what a career guy does after he serves.

Voting Question: This is a question mostly for males?
(Sat, 06 Mar 2010 08:38:58 GMT)
A 22 year old female is trying to decide between two options: 1. She works for the next 3 years, lives with her parents, and puts all of the money she makes (about $30,000 a year) into a mutual fund, giving her an estimated $107,000 or so at 9% by age 25, when she would start college (paid for by her parents). If she graduated in 4 years, she would be about 29 when she got a bachelor's degree, and due to shy personality traits, might not bring in much more than $40,000-$50,000 annually, of which she would continue to contribute at least $10,000 a year to the $107,000, with an aim of it growing to millions by retirement. Option 2: She goes straight to college now at age 22, graduating with a bachelor's degree by age 26, not investing a penny (focusing on school work) until age 26. She can go to either graduate or medical school from here, giving her a much bigger income by age 30, but postponing investing by about 10 years (from 21 to 30). While medical school would enable her to rival the investing, she could have hundreds of thousands of dollars of student loan debt to pay off before any comparable investing could start. Or, instead of graduate school, she can start working with her bachelor's degree and investing what she can, but she missed the extra years of it growing from 22 to 30. Here are the main issues: Rather than it being just a numbers game with the money, it seems like women have a shelf life that is shorter than men's. In other words, if she were to postpone college (which she's already behind on) for another 3 years while investing money and living with her parents, she's missing the years between 20 and 25 in which she could hang out with a new social group, have people over (either to her dorm or to an apartment her parents helped with for college), etc. I guess the main questions for guys are these: How much is a woman's youth worth to you? Would you rather meet a 25 year old woman who's starting college but already has money saved up, or would you rather meet a 21 year old woman when you're both in college? Would she be more likely to kick herself for not having $100,000 saved up by age 25, or for not starting college until 25? Thanks. She doesn't want kids ever, so that's not even a factor in the equation. Trying to study and work at the same time is a bad idea in this situation, especially if graduate school or medical school is in the picture, because grades would need to be top notch and stress would need to be at a bare minimum, as classwork would be stressful enough entering nearly 4 years late, having forgotten things, etc. The only way working and going to college simultaneously would work would be for a bachelor's only, which wouldn't require a certain GPA for a good graduate or medical school. And, as you said, just a bachelor's combined with shyness is not a pretty money picture.

Voting Question: Financial Aid Help. I live in a house with my mom and grandparents. Filling out college cost estimator?
(Sat, 06 Mar 2010 06:10:54 GMT)
My mom is unemployed and hasn't worked for the past two years; she only recieves money through my dads support checks. My grandpa pays all the house bills and such. He is also retired. My grandma works at a retirement home full time. My mom has custody, but I pretty much support myself. I pay for my own car, cell phone, clothes, and things like that. She uses the support check she recieves from my dad for school lunches and things. I also work part time and get around twenty to thirty hours a week. I just don't know where to put my grandparents on this fasa form. If anyone knows how I should go about doing this the help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Voting Question: Should I move back home?
(Fri, 05 Mar 2010 22:33:49 GMT)
I am a 25 year old Female who lives on her own in the Caribbean. I moved out of my parents home 7 months ago mainly because we did not own our own home and we had to move from where we were living and we could not find an affordable place that would facilitate my younger sister and I along with my parents. So I moved into an apartment with my at the time boyfriend. Because my parents are both retired and did not manage well for their retirement, I now have to assist their living which I have no problem, only that I cant afford to support two households at the same time. I really enjoy my quiet time and space, but I can no longer affor to save as my ex boyfriend moved out and I now have to pay rent alone. I have searched for cheaper places but it will continue to be hard to fund myself and my parents. My sister currently has two kids and her salary barely covers her and her kids needs so things are really tough for them.....Im beginning to feel really down and out because I am left with almost no money every month and cant save. I need to save for certain things this year and am depressed as I have not seen the way to do such...we are already in March. I want to move back in, but there is no room for me really. There are 2 bedrooms only. My parents are begging for me to come back, but I wont have my privacy as before. I will have to share with them. I cant imagine that.Im looking for a place for all of us, but its hard. What do you all think I should do? Im torn between my happiness and everyone;s as a whole. I'm venting here cus I cant really talk about it with anyone else.

Resolved Question: When should I start saving for retirement?
(Fri, 05 Mar 2010 21:12:10 GMT)
My husband and I are both 22, we are both graduating from college and can no longer keep our student jobs. We are moving to another city and looking for work, we aren't expecting to make much money initially because we have BA's. We might even just get two part-time jobs each to begin with. We have $29,000 in student loan debt. If we pay that off in five years, we will only be paying $5,000 in interest. With a ten-year plan, we would be paying about $11,000. Needless to say, we are going to try pay the debt off in five years. We don't currently have an adequate emergency savings and would like to buy a house in a few years. I have a plan to save $20,000 in three years for a down payment on a home (I live in TX, you can find a perfectly good home for $100-150k) which will also serve as our emergency savings during that three year period. In order to follow this plan, we will need to be making a combined $38,000 a year, which is not a lot. We are used to living thrifty and the cost of living in our state is very low. However, if we are splitting our extra money between an emergency/house fund and student loan debt, we won't have money to put towards retirement. Should we wait until we find full-time jobs to begin saving for retirement? Should we wait three years until we get a home? Or should we pay our student loans off more slowly in order to save for retirement? Planning for retirement at 25 sounds pretty good to me, but I'm no financial guru. Thanks!

Resolved Question: Why are so many Union Pension plans on the brink of collapse?
(Fri, 05 Mar 2010 17:54:09 GMT)
And how is this effecting Obama's decision making? Excerpts: Unions have been the fiercest proponents of the Obamacare have been the Unions. Andy Stern, head of the SEIU has been to the White House more than any other visitor. Some commentators have reported that's Stern's constant trips to the White House is due to his participation in reviewing the basic components of the health care bills as they are developed by the houses of congress. Why is this particular legislation so important to the unions? Because the unions pensions plans are woefully underfunded. The hope is once Obamacare is passed union workers will eventually be shoved over to the co-ops (or an eventual government option), freeing up union cash to help with the pension program. As of this very moment the administration is working on a plan to give preference to Union Shops for ALL federal contracts. The proposal, dubbed the “High Road Contracting Policy,” was first reported by The Daily Caller in early February. According to multiple sources familiar with the discussions, the proposal would give preference to government contractors that pay their hourly workers a “living wage” and provide additional benefits such as health insurance, employer-funded retirement plans and paid sick leave. In other words, they will be "cutting out" the non-union shops and raising the price of jobs, and increasing the federal deficit. In your opinion, is Obama being used as a catalyst to cover up for the union bosses and their poor judgment and are we as tax payers going to get stuck picking up the tab? Here is the article along with a list of 108 union plans that aren't looking too hot: http://yidwithlid.blogspot.com/2010/03/how-coming-union-pension-plan-collapse.html

I met the most amazing man. We have been friends for four years and recently began dating in May. We have had a rocky beginning. We live 70 miles apart. He is gone on the weekends for work. We have continual passion for each other, but we see each other once a week or every other week. I got laid off, I am going through a home loan modification, he wants me to lease the house and move in with him in his small room at his brother's house. We would leave a meager lifestyle, and most of the time he doesn't get anything I say. He isn't really bright. My friend of 15 years confessed he loves me the other day. He told me that he would take care of me for the rest of my life. I would instantly be moving up the hill, get a new convertible beemer, and be sent to Italy for four months to learn to cook Italian food. I would spend my summers on the French Riviera and during the year I can start my own business of choice. He is a nice man, we go to church together, dinner, basically I would have to take a few whoping tequila shots to sleep with him even though he is not bad looking. I have lost all my retirement, i haven't been to successful finding a job in my previous income level and my family said that they will cut me out if I marry the other guy. My mother has already stopped talking to me. My electric is going to get shut off. Opinions please? The problem is the man I love I cannot communicate with, my friend I can communicate with but I can't be intimate with but will have stability. I have not always been in this situation. And "blast" I have been asked out by several wealthy men, but none were my friend. You don't have to be 20 to get a date all you have to have is a personality. I suggest you look up the definition in the dictionary.

Resolved Question: Can i apply to pay my parents morgage?
(Fri, 05 Mar 2010 12:02:24 GMT)
I recently found out that my parents might struggle to get a renewal on their morgage. My mom had to leave work three years ago due to mobility problems and now claims disability living allowance, and my dad is struggling to find work as is only a couple of years off retirement age, he was made redundant last year. I however will be earning about 20,000 a year by the time the renewal will need to be made and the renewal is for 50,000 so was wondering if anyone knew whether there was a way that i could apply to pay their morgage renewal if i needed to? or even if someone knows a link to a website that may help me. I don't own my own property and have a reasonable credit rating and about 5,000 saved so far. Any help in this matter would be brilliant.

Voting Question: Suppose I punch out my soon to be ex-boss (You MUST see additional details to understand situation)?
(Fri, 05 Mar 2010 07:38:42 GMT)
(Even if they did, i could pay my bail, then leave, and consider it worth it.) And, although a state wide warrant for my arrest would be issued (And as a person who interned for the DA in high school I know it would be only statewide) it would not affect me anywhere else. I can guarantee that the DA's office will not pay precious money out of their budget to extradite me all the way back from Hawaii over a simple assault charge. Also, she's in no position to sue: My annuity and my bank accounts except for one small one is all Swiss based. Will SOME Swiss banks disclose the accounts existance? Yes, but I'm not concealing them anyway, and they still will NOT aid any US court or IRS in freezing, garnishing the funds in any way. Plus nonpayment is judgement is not a criminal offense, it's civil. But even before that, she knows who can afford the much better attorney, and suing across state lines, plus the travel expenses of coming to the islands, simply costly to the extent that it wouldn't be in her udget. I hate her, but stupidity is not the reason. She's smart enough to realize what I just said. Without lectures, without telling me to get over it and enjoy my new freedom (Believe me I will afterwards) am I foolproof? A week from today I should say

PS: I should mention that the bank accounts are Swiss based, and while they now disclose the existents of accounts to the IRS, they will not freeze/hand over any money. Plus the State of Hawaii SC has ruled that annuity funds cannot be touched for judgements/law suits. So she can't collect on anything if she sues, and failure to pay judgements is civil, not criminal. She would quickly find that out and not even waste money trying. Plus I hope she has a very good attorney, I don't think there's one I couldn't afford.

Resolved Question: How is it possible for someone in their 60's to be poor or broke?
(Thu, 04 Mar 2010 15:18:43 GMT)
I hear these stories about people who have been working since they were 14 or 16 years old (they started while in high school) who are now in their 60's - and they are broke! Or on food stamps or something. How is this possible? If you started setting aside a measly 2% of your take-home paycheck into a basket of T-bonds and other slow-growing but secure treasuries, along with a few index funds, you'd be sitting on a million-dollar gold mine by the time you were eligible for social security. Remember, a dude who is 68 today who began working at age 16 would have began working in 1958! That means FIFTY-TWO YEARS of retirement savings should be built up! How is it possible for someone with such an advantage to be broke or poor? I am only 28, and I have only been working for three years (it took me until age 25 to graduate from college and law school), and I already have $110,000 saved up for my retirement. It's not hard - I just live frugally, drive an older truck, repair it myself, and I don't waste money on useless things like heroin or crack. If I can save up $110K by age 28, how is it possible for someone with FORTY YEARS more wisdom and work experience to be BROKE? I'm not even that smart!

Resolved Question: Do you agree or disagree with this statement by Robert Hall?
(Thu, 04 Mar 2010 03:43:55 GMT)
"I'm 63 and Im Tired" by Robert A. Hall I'm 63. Except for one semester in college when jobs were scarce and a six-month period when I was between jobs, but job-hunting every day, I've worked, hard, since I was 18. Despite some health challenges, I still put in 50-hour weeks, and haven't called in sick in seven or eight years. I make a good salary, but I didn't inherit my job or my income, and I worked to get where I am. Given the economy, there's no retirement in sight, and I'm tired. Very tired. I'm tired of being told that I have to "spread the wealth" to people who don't have my work ethic. I'm tired of being told the government will take the money I earned, by force if necessary, and give it to people too lazy to earn it. I'm tired of being told that I have to pay more taxes to "keep people in their homes." Sure, if they lost their jobs or got sick, I'm willing to help. But if they bought McMansions at three times the price of our paid-off, $250,000 condo, on one-third of my salary, then let the left-wing Congress-critters who passed Fannie and Freddie and the Community Reinvestment Act that created the bubble help them with their own money. I'm tired of being told how bad America is by left-wing millionaires like Michael Moore, George Soros and Hollywood Entertainers who live in luxury because of the opportunities America offers. In thirty years, if they get their way, the United States will have the economy of Zimbabwe , the freedom of the press of China , the crime and violence of Mexico , the tolerance for Christian people of Iran , and the freedom of speech of Venezuela . I'm tired of being told that Islam is a "Religion of Peace," when every day I can read dozens of stories of Muslim men killing their sisters, wives and daughters for their family "honor"; of Muslims rioting over some slight offense; of Muslims murdering Christian and Jews because they aren't "believers"; of Muslims burning schools for girls; of Muslims stoning teenage rape victims to death for "adultery"; of Muslims mutilating the genitals of little girls; all in the name of Allah, because the Qur'an and Shari'a law tells them to. I'm tired of being told that "race doesn't matter" in the post-racial world of Obama, when it's all that matters in affirmative action jobs, lower college admission and graduation standards for minorities (harming them the most), government contract set-asides, tolerance for the ghetto culture of violence and fatherless children that hurts minorities more than anyone, and in the appointment of U.S. Senators from Illinois. I think it's very cool that we have a black president and that a black child is doing her homework at the desk where Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation. I just wish the black president was Condi Rice, or someone who believes more in freedom and the individual and less arrogantly of an all-knowing government. I'm tired of a news media that thinks Bush's fundraising and inaugural expenses were obscene, but that think Obama's, at triple the cost, were wonderful; that thinks Bush exercising daily was a waste of presidential time, but Obama exercising is a great example for the public to control weight and stress; that picked over every line of Bush's military records, but never demanded that Kerry release his; that slammed Palin, with two years as governor, for being too inexperienced for VP, but touted Obama with three years as senator as potentially the best president ever. Wonder why people are dropping their subscriptions or switching to Fox News? Get a clue. I didn't vote for Bush in 2000, but the media and Kerry drove me to his camp in 2004. I'm tired of being told that out of "tolerance for other cultures" we must let Saudi Arabia use our oil money to fund mosques and madrassa Islamic schools to preach hate in America , while no American group is allowed to fund a church, synagogue or religious school in Saudi Arabia to teach love and tolerance. I'm tired of being told I must lower my living standard to fight global warming, which no one is allowed to debate. My wife and I live in a two-bedroom apartment and carpool together five miles to our jobs. We also own a three-bedroom condo where our daughter and granddaughter live. Our carbon footprint is about 5% of Al Gore's, and if you're greener than Gore, you're green enough. I'm tired of being told that drug addicts have a disease, and I must help support and treat them, and pay for the damage they do. Did a giant germ rush out of a dark alley, grab them, and stuff white powder up their noses while they tried to fight it off? I don't think Gay people choose to be Gay, but I damn sure think druggies chose to take drugs. And I'm tired of harassment from cool people treating me like a freak when I tell them I never tried marijuana. I'm tired of illegal aliens being called "undo

Resolved Question: I need help....I made a mistake and lied about something on my foodstamp application?
(Wed, 03 Mar 2010 17:44:28 GMT)
Yesterday I had a phone interview for my food-stamp renewal and I just blurted out something and it was a lie. I do not work and i am only a full time student with my young daughter living with my grandmother. She gets social security and retirement and she has a part time job. When the lady called, and asked if anyone worked i just blurted out no and then i had to keep going along with it. I feel horrible and i am really scared that i will get in trouble. I have never been in trouble in my life and i know what I did was wrong and I hae no idea why i said no. I have a bad habit of blurting things out and i hate it!!! I feel horrible!!! I hate myself right now. Im really scared. I want to call back and tell the truth but i don't know how to explain this to them without sounding like an idiot or like i was trying to cheat the government. Does anyone have any suggestions about how I can explain this to them or what i can say. Serious answers only. I know what i did was wrong and unethical so please don't respond by telling me that. I am trying to fix this. I don't care if i don't get food-stamps anymore, I will make due, i just do not want to get in trouble.

Resolved Question: I have been approved for intermittent Family Medical Leave for 2 years in a row ?
(Wed, 03 Mar 2010 11:53:47 GMT)
I am re-posting this because I swear that people don't actually read an entire post - they just skim and give an opinion - as if their opinion is the law. I don't need an opinion - I need to know what the law is. Now, I have read the law through, but it seems murky. I would appreciate an answer from someone who does know something about the Family Medical Leave act. Thank you in advance! I was approved for intermittent Family Medical Leave for 2 years in a row now. In that time, I have used 2 days - both last year. I need FML because I sometimes have to take my Mom (has had numerous strokes, heart problems) to various appointments. All of my siblings but one live out of state, so the majority of this stuff falls on my brother - I am his backup. He is on disability retirement, so he is happy to do whatever he can for Mom. My issue is this: next month, I am going to have to take Mom out of state for some kind of stroke study thing. I put in for 2 days off. She is actually scheduled for a Thursday, but I requested both Thursday and Friday off, due to travel time, etc. I don't want to stress her out any more than necessary. Well, my boss called me in, asked me if I knew that FMLA was for my Mom only, etc. I know all of this, of course - but I was a bit surprised that this is even an issue. I was then informed by a co-worker that the big boss demanded a copy of the emergency room bill when she was in a similar situation with her Dad - taking off from work because she had to take him to the emergency room. Do they have the right to do this? I thought there was such a thing as privacy rights, etc. I mean, what if my Mom has a bad day and I need to stay home with her, could they try to make me prove this some how? Her neurosurgeon told me that due to HIPPA, he does not even have to put a reason - just that I would be needed to care for my mother. The law does not even demand that the medical condition be spelled out, nor does it even say that the request for FMLA must come from a physician, simply a Health Care Practitioner. This can be a CRNP, an MD, a PA, an RN, even an LPN. I know that I can take the time off, I made certain of that when I filled out all of the required paper work, got the letter of need from my Mom's neurosurgeon, etc. What I want to know is if the employer has a right to demand proof of some sort when I do need to use the FMLA. I just don't see how they can legally do this, but I have been surprised before. This really blows me away because I have only used it very sparingly - only when there is no recourse. My brother really can't be expected to do everything. What if she had Alzheimer's? Would they require proof EVERY time I needed to use a day to care for her? That is ridiculous. I would dearly love to be able to use my sick days for this - I have 68. However, my employer's policy is that sick days can only be used for my own illnesses. The nature of my job won't allow for taking off a couple of hours, Kathi. I either work or I don't, so if I need to take off, it is a whole day.

Resolved Question: Is it possible to separate yourself from the materialistic world?
(Wed, 03 Mar 2010 05:59:26 GMT)
Im only a junior and high school, worked my ass off down to this day in school, only to discover all i have to show for my hard work is a piece of paper on which all my grades are recorded, and it is by this same piece of paper that i will be judged and looked through, all for what? To make money. I'm so sick and tired of putting so much time and effort in something i really have nothing to show for. Hell, in the past 16 years of my life (eh 11-12 years) i could have been training in a sport in which i would now be at least be good at, or a martial art, i'd be be close to getting my black belt by now. I envy those shaolin monks in china, while their stories may be less than one might consider fortunate, there hard work and effort comes with its share of rewards. Back flips, extreme flexibility strength, super human like abilitys such as being able to keep there core body temperature at a certain level to avoid freezing to death (may not have been shaolin monks, but it was some sort of monk). Their ability to meditate 6hours+ a day is a feat in itself! I really have no motivation to try in school whatsoever, its quite alarming to me but i have no desire to care. I'm trying to shake some sense into myself and keep myself focused but it seems so useless. In theory, would it be possible for someone (an american), who had been born into a middle class family, with all the luxuries of the modern world, to separate themselves for an extended period of time from the materialistic world in which they were used to many luxuries that many people around the world lived without? I truly admire the self discipline held by martial artists and monks, while it may sound like a romanticized reality i do understand the hard work and dedication they put into the things they do. I realize by separating myself would mean no yahoo answers, no ipod, no tv,nice clothes, good food, but at the same time i could live life to its fullest, without the restrictions of modern society, no 41k, no "retirement", just living life. No, not like a bum. I wouldn't be begging for money and living in american complaining about the government, but live somewhere in asia or south american, not separated from society, but far enough to live life with no obligations from society. My parents may disown me, but what the hell? they have absolutely nothing to show for their hard work, my mother may never be able to do things she wanted because of work and by the time she retires she will only have enough to live off safely until she dies. And no "well that's why you go to school, to make lots of money". She could have done what she wanted if it wasn't for the restrictions of society. More money does nothing for you, nice clothes, cars, houses, but when you die, and ask yourself, did i ever do something with my life? Did i truly do something? I dont know, im having a tough time swallowing the whole hs>college>job(money)>retirement>death. Just need an educated college graduate to slap the sense in me. I'd like to thank everyone to has replied to my post, i know its a giant wall of text but it thank you for taking your time to read it, and help me the best you could. All of your answers have opened up unseen routes before, and i do not feel as lost as i have before. I realize that i may not be able to live the way i want to, and may want to come back and "rejoin" "normal" society, but i will do my best to set my aspirations and follow through, life committment is an achievement in itself.

Resolved Question: Intermittent Family Medical Leave issue?

Voting Question: Second Home turned into Rental Property Mid Year?
(Wed, 03 Mar 2010 02:53:52 GMT)
My primary residence is in Michigan and a few years ago I purchased a second home in Florida because I moved there for work and also figured it could be a future retirement home. After living in the FL home for a couple years I got a new job in Michigan and moved back in June 09, and began renting the FL home in July 09. My intention is to rent the property for about 5 years and then retire and have a summer home in MI and winter home in FL. Since it was rental property for part of 2009, do I deduct half of the expenses (mortgage interest, real estate taxes, etc.) on schedule A and then transfer the home to rental property the rest of the year and complete schedule E? Going forward should I complete schedule E and depreciate the property? Thanks.

Resolved Question: HELP! I'm really dispairing.?
(Wed, 03 Mar 2010 02:21:28 GMT)
I am worried that I will never make enough money to be comfortable when I near retirement age. I have recently left Uni and my degree has got me nowhere. I wanted to become a teacher but that fell by the wayside due to lack of neccessary qualifications. I temporarily live with my parents as I am unemployed and looking for work since leaving Uni but all the jobs I have found are minimum wage jobs with hardly enough money to keep for myself. My sister and her boyfriend have both secured a mortgage but as I am not in a relationship and/or likely to secure a job that pays well enough to get one. How am I ever going to have enough money to live into retirement? I worry about this because of the following reasons: 1. I don't want to live from pay check to pay check. I want to earn what I get and put the money to good use. 2. There is a history of arthritis and heart conditions in my family. What if I get sick or slowly become incapacitated and loose my job, I'll loose my home. 3. I don't want to be flat-sharing for ever and a day with strangers. I want to have my own space but i've just applied for a job earning £12,349. On that wage, it is impossible. 4. At some point I want a family, how can I possible support a family on a wage like that? Can someone advise me on how to manage my affairs wisely? or give me a heads up on what you did in a similar situation? HELP! I'm really dispairing.

Voting Question: Would it be wrong to rewrite tax laws that would hurt people when they retire after having worked for decades?
(Tue, 02 Mar 2010 17:07:22 GMT)
Pelosi wants to put a Windfall Tax on all stock market profits, including Retirement funds, 401Ks and Mutual Funds. When asked how these new tax dollars would be spent, she replied, “We need to raise the standard of living of our poor, unemployed and minorities. For example, we have an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in our country who need our help, along with millions of unemployed minorities. Stock market windfall profits taxes could go a long ways to guarantee these people the standard of living they would like to have as Americans. We need to work toward the goal of equalizing income in our country and at the same time limiting the amount the rich can invest”. Is she crazy? She wants to take money from working American citizens that have been working for decades in order to help illegal immigrants? We are not talking about millionaires being taxed here as she so believes. We’re talking about the majority of working Americans that have been funding their retirement plans through their employer and otherwise, and according to the current tax law. Would it be right for Pelosi and the Democrats to rewrite these laws after Americans have been saving for their retirements is accordance with the current laws?

Resolved Question: I feel like I'm wasting away my youth/20s, and I need advice on how to live it in a more fulfilling way?
(Tue, 02 Mar 2010 03:56:31 GMT)
This is going to be lengthy. If you get to the end of this and proceed to give me some advice I would like to thank you all very much. So the story is I'm a 21 year old woman who's gone through some pretty tough times. I was the slightly chubby and extremely awkward girl who had a very difficult time going through puberty. I tried to get over that and spent 2 years of my life (from 14-16) devoted to school. I would call that period in my life achievement #1 . I am probably most proud of myself when considering ambition and drive. It was a thrilling intellectual journey although socially unfulfilling. Achievement #2 happened probably from when I was 15 to late 16. I gained more confidence about myself than I ever had before and I finally formed a social group. It was probably one of the happiest moments of my life, having friends and feeling at least comfortable with my looks and etc. The dark parts happened afterwards and since then I would relate that to being caught in a dark and turbulent tornado, excuse the dramatics but thats really how it was. The truth is I developed a very embarrassing condition in which I was unable to control my flatulence. I attribute all the misgivings from my depression to my suicidal thoughts to my anxiety attack and the pushing away of family, friends, and etc to this very problem. I would go deeper into my sob story but then that would require me to write a novel. I know that what I have gone through was necessary, but I do regret spending the those years in which I should've been crazy and living it up... 18, 19, 20, and 21...miserable, depressed, detached and etc etc etc. I have sought help and while I have not been able to figure out exactly what is medically wrong with me, I have somewhat sort of reclaimed enough control where I am able to go to school without too much fear again. Socially though, this mysterious medical problem has left me mentally very weak and worn. I have had to reclaim all those simple things I used to take for granted...like looking people in the eye, or looking your own mother in the eye or making casual conversation with the cashier...or enjoying outings with your friends. Or even feeling relaxed and safe in your own home. I feel tired and sorry that I had to spend all that time so tormented. My 22nd birthday is approaching and before I know it I'll be 30 and then i'll be 35, 40. I'll wake up one day and there it is. Retirement. I don't want to become an old lady who has spent the majority of her life awkward and miserable. Putting this strange medical problem of mine aside, I really just want a few suggestions on trying to prevent this regret that might creep up on me later in life. On a lighter note, there might be an achievement #3. I defied my parents and went to art school. It hasn't really given me or anyone else real fulfillment yet but it's a possibility. If I could take this further and make this a full fledged achievement I would try to create a story or a movie that would move or inspire people in a deep way. They say you can't have it all, so maybe I'm being greedy. What I want to happen before I turn too old for anything to happen is to be in a loving relationship a couple of times (I have not been in a relationship for obvious reasons), to help others, to be able to find those things I thought I lost...home, comfort, family, true friends.. And a curious thing I have not been able to do is enjoy my feminity. I have always been extremely embarassed about attracting attention whether good or bad, so I haven't been into shopping or having fun being a girl. A lot of times its a question of who I would be dressing up and feeling pretty for? And why. I once tried to dress up and embrace the girlier side in me last year but I got treated pretty horribly by one of my teachers who probably thought I was an airhead who wasn't serious about art school. It's a problem I'd like to fix as I know I won't be young forever and I want to be able to feel beautiful without having that be the only thing that comes across when I communicate with people.

Iam not an old person (39 years) but Iam very very conservative when it comes to money investing, I keep all my money in FDIC insured banks and don't buy real estate (other tahn my own house) stocks, bonds and even don't contribute to retirement plans and even if I buy any I panic a lot till I sell! I hate to see red on my porttfolio. Do you think this is wrong? Do you advise me to take risk or just live with that as long as Iam sleeping well? Resolved Question: I need advice from restaurant owners...?
(Mon, 01 Mar 2010 15:57:33 GMT)
So, my dad wants to own his own sports bar. He's 45. He's the VP of a logistics company (24 years) and he's sick of it. He's opening the restaurant in hopes that he can live off of the income and build a retirement for himself. Lucky for him, my husband is unemployed with a culinary degree so he plans to have my husband run the kitchen for him. Is there anything we're being naive about? Everything is moving so fast. I don't want to see my dad run this place into the ground because he doesn't know what he's doing. We're a family that gets along great so I don't foresee any problems there. I've seen the show Kitchen Nightmares and so have my dad and husband so we are aware that not all restaurants make it. Please, any advice you can give would be helpful. Thanks!

Voting Question: Can I collect both social security and supplemental social security at the same time ?
(Mon, 01 Mar 2010 14:32:42 GMT)
I just found out that I will only collect about $300.00 dollars a month when I retire. That is not enough to live on. I'm out of work. Unable to find a job and its beginning to look like I will have to resort to retirement to exist.

Resolved Question: Is it crazy to pick up your entire life and move somewhere else just because you want to?
(Mon, 01 Mar 2010 01:32:59 GMT)
My husband and I are both around 40 years old. We each have 2 children from a previous marriage and have good, stable jobs. We've been married for almost 10 years. My husband is from another state and we will be the same distance from his family if we move. I am from this area. My parents, aunts, uncles, etc are from here. I am an only child, so my kids don't have any aunts and uncles, but they do have a very close relationship with my parents. The kids are optimistic about the possibility of us moving. We live about 4 hours away from the coast and visit as often as we can. Both of us feel most at home near the ocean. We visit 4 or 5 times a year, but it isn't the same as living close by. A few months ago we made the decision to moves near the beach in 2012. We have to wait at least that long due to custody issues with the children and because we will have our cars paid off by then. In 2012, 2 of the kids will be adult and y two will be in their early teen years. There are no custody issues with my chidren. Also, by waiting another couple of years we can save up to make the move less stressful financially. Part of me is wondering, though, if it is selfish and immature to plan a move like this. The other half of me believes you only live once. We could plan to wait until retirement to move, but what if we don't reach that age? You never know what will happen. I just wonder what other people think. Should we consider this just a pipe dream, or something that we can plan and accomplish as one of our life's goals?

Resolved Question: At what rank can you live with your military boyfriend in on base housing?
(Sun, 28 Feb 2010 23:25:46 GMT)
My high school boyfriend and I just got back together and he is trying to get stationed in Hawaii to finish off his military contract and retire. We want to do this move together. He has a son and I have a daughter from previous relationships of ours. He is adopting my daughter from her father. He is an E5 rank in the National Guard and has 7 yrs before retirement. We are not sure if he can get us housing or not there. What I am asking is how can we get the housing we will need with his rank and not be married? We dont care about military benifits for me we just care about us being able to be together he is currently going through a divorce and neither of us is ready for marriage again. I heard it also depends on his rank if we can get housing and not be married. How does that work for him? He has custody of his son and he is full time active in the military right now. I was reading that he may be able to get us housing depending on his rank. How does the depending on his rank play into housing? Everyone wants the adoption my daughter is the one that gave us the idea in the first place. We both been married and we are not ready for marriage just yet. His soon to be ex wife is using his daughter s leverage to control his life and make him miserable. She wont let him have a girlfriend but she can have a boyfriend. I stay out of that the best I can and when he gets stationed to Hawaii he isnt going to leave us behind at all. Now the more I am finding out we are going to have to do some reconsidering the marriage thing and come up with a prenup type of agreement for the both of us. i am only trying to gather the facts and discredit useless information I found here on Yahoo about exceptions to military housing and not being married depending on their rank. Dont take this as arguing with anyone that I am not doing what so ever I am new to the military life and just trying to get the straight facts. I did see here on Yahoo Answers that you could live on base housing without being married depending on their rank and situation. Like I said I am just trying to get nothing but straight facts and discredit the exception clause I had seen. Thank you to those who have KINDLY helped in the answers I have received.

Resolved Question: Is this good enough, it sucks that leap year is every four years, but is it good enough?
(Sun, 28 Feb 2010 15:42:52 GMT)
My husbands birthday was on February 29th. It is so sad. His parents are divorced and his mother celebrated his birthday every 4 years and his Dad celebrated it on the 28th. Is this fair that his mother wanted him to be born on that date, he was 10 weeks pre-mature and he gets a birthday every four years? According to his mother, he will be celebrating his 8th birthday in 4 years, which I think it is sad. We are getting married in March, and I think it is sad, the way his mother treats him with gifts. His Dad, is the best. When I am with his brothers and sisters and half sibling and step siblings, who ALL live with his Dad, they make me feel like I am in Cheaper By The Dozen or 19 Kids and Counting or Yours Mine and Ours. They are so loving. Especially his step-mother. She is happy and they are like the best family, ever. They are like normal parents and they give birthday gifts every year, not every four years. His mother abused him by verbal, his mother just hates him. I am not serious, she even admitted it. She has a good job, she is not poor, she can afford birthday gifts all the time! She had my husband when she was 14, she is 42 years old! She has a good retirement plan and she had rich parents, who gave her a lot of money. She still refuses to care for my husband and love him. Is that sad ^? Well this year, he wants to forget about his mother and focus on other things. Tonight, we will have a special dinner. I will take him and we will eat with nobody, last night we had a family birthday dinner (and we had a ball/fun time). And I am getting him 2 puppies. I found both at the pound for free, they were cute, they are different breeds, person at pound said they get along great! They will be 8 weeks old today, and I cant wait! We will go to church at 2:00 pm, we will change once we are home and pack up. I am taking him to the beach for 5days, where the pound is located. We will leave the house at 4:30 pm. We will go to a fancy restaurant in fancy clothes at 5:30 pm, while on road. We will eat and have a small cake for dessert. Then we will arrive at the beach condo at 9:30 pm and enjoy a few days. The condo is his Dads so no money :). Road Trip is like $400 and dinner will be $100, but we are fine. I had a budget of $1,500. I got a little extra money at work, so I made it his gift. We will open a gift I got him in the condo and have some whine. Then we will change in PJ's and watch a movie or play video games. Then we will just enjoy 5 days of the beach, we will walk on the beach, take some photos for the wedding, relax, go mini golfing and go to an arcade. We will also go rock climbing and do fun/romantic/interesting things. We will mostly be inside and enjoy the sun set. Then on Friday, we will leave. I will tell him we will have time to look at the pound for an hour or two and we go in. We go to see the English Bull Dog (female) and the Puggle (female) and I will tell him it is ours. He will flip out and get them. We will keep on driving and stop at a Pet Smart, buy supplies and all. Then on Saturday, the next day, at night, he will do a work thing from 3:00 pm- 6:00 pm Then he will come home at 7:00 pm, then we will have a surprise party. I spent about $1,500 on this WHOLE thing and it was my extra money. I bet he will do something special for my birthday, and we might make a baby on the way. Please dont call me spoiled. It is our extra wedding money that we had for the budget of the wedding, the extra honey moon money, the extra work money from work, and some money I saved just for him. I have seen my friends who spent like $4,000 on their husband/wifes birthday. My friend, got her husband an ice sculpture, that would melt in like 3 days or less, for $5,000. Oh, and it was, like a small sculpture. I just build memories for my husband for his birthday, and make up some years his mother ruined for him!

Resolved Question: Can I receive social security retirement benefits while I am collecting unemployment insurance?
(Sat, 27 Feb 2010 21:19:44 GMT)
I live in Florida and am collecting unemployment insurance benefits. I understand the state of Florida does not deduct dollars for collecting Social Security Benefits at the same time. Is this also true for employee contributed to only union pensions.

Resolved Question: Does anybody know about any other fallouts between a player and their former team?
(Sat, 27 Feb 2010 14:35:24 GMT)
The only I can think off the top of my head is Frank Thomas and the Chicago White Sox. And the falling out happened between him and the general manger of the team Kenny Willams. And I am sure you all remember happened in 2006, Frank Thomas played for the Chicago White Sox from 1990-2005. So I am really even looking for players that was on their team for a really long time, but something happened, to have that player no longer on the team, and a falling out happened between him, and the team, or mainly the general manger of the team. Or in the case that you were living in a cave, or didn't hear about it happening, you can read about it at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Thomas_(AL_baseball_player) . 2005 was the year that the Chicago White Sox won the World Series, and what also turned out to be Frank Thomas' final season for the Chicago White Sox. I don't think he was even on their playoff roster, but since then he has had 2 brief stints with the Oakland Athletics, and he also played for the Toronto Blue Jays. H hasn't played in the MLB since 2008, and has only recently announced his retirement. And by surprise, the Chicago White Sox announced they plan to retire his #. I realize now after posting this question that i have he wrngs boards, and I know where the baseball boards are, but I don't think Yahoo Answers will let me move this question between the 2 boards.
