Open Question: Enlisting soon (possibly) and wondering about retirement...?
(Fri, 19 Mar 2010 03:17:33 GMT)
So I'm thinking about enlisting (Have to choose between Navy and Air Force) and as it goes right now I would like to be able to stay stationed in Japan once I finish my four-year infantry circuit. Is that a possibility, or is there anyway to go about doing it? I would like to live in Japan, but prefer to still be an active member of the military until I'm ready to retire for good. If you know anything on how this words, I'd appreciate the info: According to the recruiter I talked too, only the Navy has a retirement base in Japan; Air Force only has an infantry base ~ Not really sure on the details of it all. Thanks for any assistance.

Open Question: Assistance with the unemployment insurance on my credit card?
(Thu, 18 Mar 2010 04:06:00 GMT)
Here is the story: The company I had worked for, for nearly 20 years was bought out and the new company laid off over 80% of the employees. The severance package I received and my vacation "buy out" totaled nearly 7 months. During the last month I worked, the company brought in people from the state unemployment office and job assistance programs to meet with those being let go. During that meeting it was mentioned that people who receive severance packages etc may not be immediatly elligable for unemployment benefits. There were two "waves" of employees who went out before my "wave" went, and I was hearing from some of those, that because of the size of their severance package they were being told they did not qualify yet and wait till the severance package ran out. Then I heard the nightmares they went through when they reapplied. When I left with my packages, I opted to not go through what they went through. Frankly, with a package that equalled almost 7 months, I wasn't expecting to be unemployed that long. I had never been unemployed for more than 6 weeks in five jobs I had over nearly 25 years. I had always been able to find work quickly. One time I wasn't even without work long enough to receive my first unemployment check. After 7 months I was still unable to find a job and the severance package ran out, so I filed for unemployment. During this time I was faithfully paying my bills. When I decided to file for my credit card insurance is when all hell broke lose. I called the company, was told they don't deal with BofA anymore. I called back, oh yes they handle BofA, but I'm not on the list. I call BofA. BofA gets angry and calls themselves. They get the same runaround... first told they don't handle it, then when the lady at BofA said "Um, I AM BofA!!" The lady on the other line said "Oh, let me transfer you to the people who take care of that" Then that person said I'm not on the list. The lady at BofA said BULLSH*T (yes she did). Then I was miraculously found. They sent me the paperwork. I filled it out and sent it back. They lost the paperwork and wouldn't accept a copy of my copy. So I refilled it out. They declined me saying I didn't file for unemployment within 30 days. I got pissed. By this time, I had to move and couldn't deal with this, while looking for work and a place to live. When I got settled again, I called BofA. at that time my intent was to find out how much I paid over the years and atleast try to get that money back. BofA wasn't happy with what I went through, so they tried again. Again we went through the same situation... They don't handle BofA, oh you're BofA, yes we do, that person is not on our list, oh, wait yes she is. You should have been approved, we'll resend the paperwork. Again I filled out the paperwork and again I was declined. What are my options at this time? Do I have any legal recourse? Is this even legal? There are extrenuating circumstances for everything and these people don't seem to acknowledge them. Frankly, I feel by the way they tried to sneak around saying they didn't handle that account and then saying I wasn't on their list, it's as if they are trying everything possible to not pay up. I have prided myself on keeping my credit in good standing. To get this monkey off my back and not knowing what exactly my future was, I opted to take money out of my retirement savings to pay it off. But they still should reimburse me. I paid them... for years. This is not right. I appreciate you reading my story and appreciate any assistance and advice you can offer.

Open Question: I am retiring in CA in 18 months. House is upside down by 100k. If I file b-ruptcy, will I lose my 401K?
(Wed, 17 Mar 2010 19:49:44 GMT)
I am retiring at age 62. I have about 100,000 in 401. I owe 320K on a house that is now only worth 220K and about 40K in CC debt. I was planning on working until I was 65 to pay off the CC debt and hope that the market stabalized, but my health has greatly deminished. I must retire and mvoe out of CA. I think my only option is to file ch7 and let them have the house. My wife and I both have 7 year old cars that are paid off. I am really only worried about my retirement. I will be drawing about 1700/mo in Social Security to live off of. I am just trying to get ahead of this situation that I see coming. I am open to all advise. -- Thanks --

Open Question: Traditionalist neighbor is freaking?
(Wed, 17 Mar 2010 16:14:53 GMT)
Friends with a neighbor, we talk sometimes when our kids play together. She is a happy SAHM of two boys, 14 month old and 6 year old. I know she's very religious and a traditionalist...women should stay at home, men should make the decisions/be head of house holds ect. We have had discussions about such before(with untamed biting her tongue a lot...I like her and her kids, but very much disagree with her on many issues). Well after 12 years in the military her husband has decided that he has had enough, he turned down his reenlistment option. He announced this over dinner a few days ago. So he is going to finish up his time, about another six months then go get a job in a similar field as a civilian. So her head of household made a decision and she is panicking, thought they would be a military family for another eight years at least, then they would have his retirement pay and life long health care. She's worried about their future, him finding a job, health care(there youngest has some serious health problems) where they will live ect ect But the thing that really bothers me about this...is her husband didnt talk about this her first, he made his decision and announced it. She says thats how it's done. It is his career...he has every right to be happy in his career and make changes if needed....but shouldn't major life changing decisions be discussed between a couple prior to making the change? How common is this in traditional couples? (I get the impression from her, that she feels guilty for being worried and upset...that others wouldn't approve of her distrust in her husbands decisions. She even said she couldnt talk about this to her relatives and friends from church hence why she ranted and "cried" on my shoulder instead) I really dont get how this power structure could ever lead to or be a successful relationship.

Open Question: Can anyone tell me the point of putting Career vs Streak on HBK vs Taker II (details inside)?
(Wed, 17 Mar 2010 15:18:09 GMT)
Ok, I believe everyone dead and live knew even if HBK loses he will be back by summer like nothing ever happened. Why people bought the possibility of HBK retires if he loses is beyond me. This match got interference by HHH written all over it. One reason I truly don't think HBK will retire is this: If he's done, that means the last few months of his career were spent acting like a psycho, destroying DX on a very anti-climactic note, and alienating himself from everybody else. So he acts like a mad dog, attacks referees and random people, and then suddenly the locker room comes out to give him an ovation for his career? I don't see it happening. I think when he retires we'll get at least one more HBK/HHH match for old time's sake and probably a few other last hurrahs as well. Since when a retirement match means something in WWE? Savage won the WWE title a year after his. Funk wrestled after his. Hogan wrestled after his. And for the love of God, Ric Flair just wrestled last week after his! When this feud turns out to be HHH vs HBK all along, Taker's involvement will be forgotten like a loser.

Open Question: Personality disorders?
(Wed, 17 Mar 2010 14:52:02 GMT)
Sam is hyper-vigilant and anxious, anhedonia and dysphoria and doesn't like sex ( thinks it's a waste of time. ) He is consistently and repeatedly victimized by his clients, for instance. They take credit for his ideas and leverage them to promote themselves, but then fail to re-hire him as a consultant. Ani is serving time in prison, He looks completely puzzled and disdainful when I ask him why he did what he did. "For the money, of course" - he blurts out impatiently and then recomposes himself: "Had this panned out, these guys would have had a great retirement, far better than their meager and laughable pensions could provide." Can he describe his typical "customer"? Of course he can - he is nothing if not thorough. He provides me with a litany of detailed demographics. No, I say - I am interested to know about their wishes, hopes, needs, fears, backgrounds, families, emotions. He is stumped for a moment: "Why would I want to know these data? It's not like I was their bloody grandson, or something!" Ani is contemptuous towards the "meek and weak". Dal is an attractive young woman but seems to be unable to maintain a stable sense of self-worth and self-esteem. Her confidence in her ability to "hold on to men" is at a low ebb, having just parted ways with "the love of her life". In the last year alone she confesses to having had six "serious relationships". Dal likes to "live dangerously, on the edge." She does drugs occasionally - "not a habit, just for recreation", she assures me. She is a shopaholic and often finds herself mired in debts. Mark sits where instructed, erect but listless. When I ask him how he feels about attending therapy, he shrugs and mumbles "OK, I guess". He rarely twitches or flexes his muscles or in any way deviates from the posture he has assumed early on. He reacts with invariable, almost robotic equanimity to the most intrusive queries on my part. He shows no feelings when we discuss his uneventful childhood, his parents ("of course I love them"), and sad and happy moments he recollects at my request. Mark veers between being bored with our encounter and being annoyed by it. How would he describe his relationships with other people? He has none that he can think of. In whom does he confide? He eyes me quizzically: "confide?" Who are his friends? Does he have a girlfriend? No. He shares pressing problems with his mother and sister, he finally remembers. When was the last time he spoke to them? More than two years ago, he thinks "I would like to be normal" - says Gladys and blushes purple. In which sense is she abnormal? She prefers reading books and watching movies with her elderly mother to going out with her colleagues to the occasional office party. Maybe she doesn't feel close to them? How long has she been working with these people? Eight years in the same firm and "not one raise in salary" - she blurts out, evidently hurt. Her boss bullies her publicly and the searing shame of it all prevents her from socializing with peers, suppliers, and clients. El-Or's real name is George. He changed it as a result of an epiphany he experienced at the tender age of 9 when he encountered an alien spaceship in his back yard and "in all probability" was abducted by its crew. Can't he remember for sure? It's all kind of fuzzy, but ever since then he has had numerous out of body experiences and has developed psychic capabilities such as clairvoyance and remote viewing. "I can see that you don't believe a word of it." - he declaims bitterly - "You probably can't wait to tell the other therapists here about me and have a good laugh at my expense." I remind him that therapy sessions are strictly confidential but he nods his head sagely: "Yeah, sure, whatever you say, Doc." El-Or, wounded by my skepticism, lapses into his own private language: "The locust days are here and the wise shall behold and not see, hear the deafening and yet not be lifted." Can he help me understand what he just said? "Your crown is naked, councillor, 'tis there to fathom and yours to cling to. All your kind shall perish if you forsake not your mind's cage." In other words: I better believe what he tells me and give up my prejudices - or I shall be rendered obsolete and dispensable when the time comes. El-Or firmly believes that Earth is about to be overtaken by alien species. They are already here, scouting the land and choosing who will be "lifted" and who will "perish". Many adepts have defected to "their" side and are collaborating with the aliens in the subjugation of Mankind and the ultimate conquest of our planet. El-Or, though, has decided not to betray his kind. His self-assigned mission is to warn of the impending doom and save as many "enlightened" souls as he can. Hence his irritation with my attempts to puncture holes in his scenario. These are just a few cases I need some help with. You have have to answer the questions that are asked in the message just help me Identify the disorders. Tha

Open Question: How do you trust again and go on?
(Wed, 17 Mar 2010 14:41:11 GMT)
My boyfriend of 11 yrs, live with me and my two teens. It was understood I never wanted to marry, but I always told him I was planning my life with him. Retirement, etc. Well, I found out that he's been writing to TONS of women online from all dating websites, craigslist, yahoo personals, etc. Everyone! After reading these emails, I feel like I totally don't even know the man anymore. And on top of it all, he even tried to "hook up" with a woman for a drink the day one of my newborn grandson's died! He's been there for me, and my daughter and now he says he's sorry, won't write women again, and that talk is cheap and he never actually cheated. But I don't believe him. He's been "writing" for at least 5 yrs. that I found. What do I do? He asked me to give him a chance, but can I?

Resolved Question: What advice do you have for me regarding this situation?
(Wed, 17 Mar 2010 12:09:19 GMT)
My brother in law who lives on the opposite coast got himself into major financial trouble. My husband wants to give him a loan of which we can barely afford and which I am reluctant to give b/c his brother is used to the "good" life and does not seem to have learned any financial lessons. Case in point: He bought an iphone when he pretty much lost everything. He had 2 impractical vehicles (big truck & leased BMW - expensive townhouse - top of the line stuff in the townhouse - etc.) We don't know the loan amount but that he can pay back $200 a month. We've had creditors call us b/c he owes them money. He owed the state taxes. I don't feel good about this at all. We can barely afford it so I have to tell my husband that whatever we give - we have to be prepared to take it as a loss. I have loaned money to friends and have not been paid back. -- What kills me about this is that his brother in law is absolutely ignorant when it comes to finances. He wants to impress. He is depressed that his life is the way that it is but he doesn't seem to connect the dots. He was overspending his means by a huge amount. He blames others. He was a bit mean to his ex-girlfriend - making snide comments about her inability to afford a BMW like him. He also made remarks to his brother and me - indirect really about how we weren't living it up like him. His brother also slept with my husband's ex-wife. At the time - from what I've been told - he didn't seem to get that what he did was wrong. -- I'm just beside myself. I need some advice. Please be kind. Can you see why I'm not feeling good about lending this guy money? It would be different if we could afford to but we really can't. We have already been sacrificing and cutting back for years. We have built up a savings in case we hit a rough patch. I don't even think he has a retirement savings and he's not that far from 40. He wants his own place. I say that he should try to rent a room from someone (house) or see if he can stay with someone from work temporarily. He doesn't have a vehicle. He lost his vehicle b/c he's still stupid with finances and paying bills. I don't think he's stupid. I think he's ignorant and closed. He has a good job. Ironically, he is a finance manager. He also does sales. But he's making a lot less. What he sells is highly cyclical - dependent completely on the economy. Shouldn't he have seen this coming? Thank you. I will talk to him. My husband knows how I feel. We've talked about it before. My husband was almost in the same position. I got him out of it. He told his brother that - so why his brother isn't coming to me for some advice - I don't know. Maybe embarrassed but I already know. I have experience in finance professionally. My parents taught me money management early on. By saying no, does that make me seem insensitive and cold? I don't think so in this case b/c of the circumstances. He got himself into this mess. Before everything fell apart - I did advocate for savings and not spending it all before it was earned. I don't think so in this case b/c of the circumstances. He got himself into this mess. Before everything fell apart - I did advocate for savings and not spending it all before it was earned. I don't think so in this case b/c of the circumstances. He got himself into this mess. Before everything fell apart - I did advocate for savings and not spending it all before it was earned. I just did. I said "no". I was brave. It's hard to say no. But you know - forget him. Who buys an iphone when you don't need it b/c he already had a smart phone? Isn't a place to live and a car to get to work a bit more important? He has no kids - no wife. He should be able to afford himself. He had at least 2 gaming systems. Xbox - PS3 - etc. Flat screen tv - etc. etc. We don't even have that.

Resolved Question: Is this what Barack Obama has planned for us?
(Wed, 17 Mar 2010 00:37:14 GMT)
The Dinner Roll .. Once upon a time I was invited to the White House for a private dinner with the President. I am a respected businessman, with a factory that produces memory chips for computers and portable electronics. There was some talk that my industry was being scrutinized by the administration, but I paid it no mind. I live in a FREE country. There's nothing that the government can do to me if I've broken no laws. My wealth was EARNED honestly, and an invitation to dinner with an American President is an honor. I checked my coat, was greeted by the Chief of Staff, and joined the President in a yellow dining room. We sat across from each other at a table draped in white linen. The Great Seal was embossed on the china. Uniformed staff served our dinner. The meal was served, and I was startled when my waiter suddenly reached out, plucked a dinner roll off my plate and began nibbling it as he walked back to the kitchen.. "Sorry 'bout that," said the President. "Andrew is very hungry." "I don't appreciate..." I began, but as I looked into the calm brown eyes across from me, I felt immediately guilty and petty. It was just a dinner roll. "Of course," I concluded, and reached for my glass. Before I could, however, another waiter reached forward, took the glass away and swallowed the wine in a single gulp. "And his brother, Eric, is very thirsty," said the President. I didn't say anything. The President is testing my compassion, I thought. I withheld my comments and decided to play along. I don't want to seem unkind.. My plate was whisked away before I had tasted a bite. "Eric's children are also quite hungry." With a lurch, I crashed to the floor. My chair had been pulled out from under me. I stood, brushing myself off angrily, and watched as it was carried from the room. And their grandmother can't stand for long." I excused myself, smiling outwardly, but inside feeling like a fool. Obviously I had been invited to the White House to be sport for some game. I reached for my coat, to find that it had been taken. I turned back to the President. "Their grandfather doesn't like the cold." I wanted to shout, "that was my coat!" But again, I looked at the placid smiling face of my host and decided I was being a poor sport. I spread my hands helplessly and chuckled. Then I felt my hip pocket and realized my wallet was gone. I excused myself and walked to a phone on an elegant side table. I learned shortly that my credit cards had been maxed out, my bank accounts emptied, my retirement and equity portfolios had vanished, and my wife had been thrown out of our home. Apparently, the waiters and their families were moving in. The President hadn't moved or spoken as I learned all this, but finally I lowered the phone into its cradle and turned to face him. "Andrew's whole family has made bad financial decisions. They haven't planned for retirement and they need a house. They recently defaulted on a subprime mortgage. I told them they could have your home. They need it more than you do." My hands were shaking. I felt faint I stumbled back to the table and knelt on the floor. The President cheerfully cut his meat, ate his steak, and drank his wine. I lowered my eyes and stared at the small grey circles on the tablecloth that were water drops. "By the way," he added, "I have just signed an Executive Order nationalizing your factories. I'm firing you as head of your business. I'll be operating the firm now for the benefit of all mankind. There's a whole bunch of Erics and Andrews out there and they can't come to you for jobs groveling like beggars...we need to spread YOUR wealth around..." I looked up. The President dropped his spoon into the empty ramekin which had been his crème Brule. He drained the last drops of his wine. As the table was cleared, he lit a cigarette and leaned back in his chair. He stared at me. I clung to the edge of the table as if it were a ledge and I were a man hanging over an abyss. I thought of the years behind me, of the life I had lived. The life I had earned with a lifetime of work, risk and struggle. Why was I punished? How had I allowed it to be taken? What game had I played and lost? I looked across the table and noticed with some surprise that there was no game board between us. What had I done wrong? As if answering the unspoken thought, President Obama suddenly cocked his head, locked his empty eyes to mine, and bared a million teeth, chuckling wryly as he folded his hands. "You should have stopped me at the dinner roll," he said.

Resolved Question: My best friend of over 35 years is married to my wifes best friend.?
(Tue, 16 Mar 2010 00:31:07 GMT)
So over the years, we have seen each other thru it all. Recently I lost my job of over 25 years, plus my retirement, medical insurance,etc...tough at anytime, but especially when you have 2 daughters in college, and my wife has breast cancer..The next week, my wifes mom died.We lived in California and my wife needed to get to Indiana to make arrangements for her mom. My great friend, made all the arrangements, went and got the girls at school, flew my wife, daughters and me to Indiana. Gave my wife a charge card and told her to use it for any expenses...we would work it all out later. Then a few days later my friend and his wife, and 5 out of 6 of their kids flew to Indiana to attend the funeral and bring the girls back to school, while we stayed to straighten things out. How do you repay your best friend...how do you express that in the worse of times they were there...what can we do?.

Resolved Question: Am I being too harsh with my husband?
(Mon, 15 Mar 2010 21:32:40 GMT)
My husband does nothing around the house. He was an only child & his mother wouldn't let him do things around the house, because she didn't want him to be a laborer for a living. When we got married he was the "money man". What I mean by that is he is good with managing money, saving for retirement, putting money away for the kid's education, etc. I do admit that before we got married I struggled financially, now we have no problems with money. He always says that if he can pay someone less money to do something than he makes in an hour, then it's best to just pay someone and go to work, or relax. I like to save money & do things around the house myself. I am always doing some type of construction project, or something in the garden. Right now, I'm building a room onto our house, with help from my dad & friends. My husband will lay on the couch and watch me do all this work by myself. He says that if I like to do optional projects on my own, then why should he help. He says that he "hates" that type of work & worked hard getting his education so that he would never have to do it & that I want another room that we can hire a contractor. I'm starting to see my husband as lazy & I called him lazy last week. Since I did that he really hasn't come home much. He has been staying with his dad & he won't talk to me much. Now my husband will help out with the kids, cooking, dishes, etc, but he draws the line there. Am I being too harsh on my husband? Or is he just lazy?

Resolved Question: Is Government really the problem?
(Mon, 15 Mar 2010 16:19:05 GMT)
I keep hearing that mantra over and over from free-marketeers.Yet the 19th century was NOT some "golden age" of capitalism, as if the economy was stable and the stock market was earning a decent return, year after year. Financial panics and depressions happened roughly once every 10 or 15 years. There was outright fraud much of the time, even counterfeit stock certificates being sold as the real thing (read about the "Big Four" in the railroads), because the Securities and Exchange Commission didn't exist yet.And in the 19th century, the stock market was a playground only for the very wealthy. Ordinary workers couldn't count on investing in the stock market for their retirement, because they didn't have the financial cushion to ride through those wild shocks. In the 19th century, old age was a one-way ticket to poverty for many, because Social Security didn't exist yet. And poverty could mean starvation for your children, because there was no significant social safety net. Failure to pay your rent on time meant the landlord would show up in your apartment and literally toss your belongings out into the street--and call the cops to throw you out. The slum conditions and factory conditions back then were terrible, because there were no regulations governing humane treatment. In medicine, quack cures, such as dangerous radium and opium, were common, because the FDA didn't exist yet. Many innocent people got hooked on opium or radiation poisoning from radium. That was the "free market" before the Government reforms of the 20th century. Is that the free market "ideal society" you would like to live in?

Open Question: What can I do about this situation between my father and stepmother?
(Mon, 15 Mar 2010 15:39:16 GMT)
My daughter is graduating high school in 3 months. We told my Dad and his wife (who live 600 miles away) and his wife immediately freaked out that this wasn't enough notice because she's going shopping with friends that weekend. We told them we know that's pretty far away and we understand if they can't come, but she just kept on about it. Now, it's because she's visiting her sister that weekend (who lives only about 80 miles away). They are retired but travel easily they are in their early 60s. I wish they'd just say they can't come rather than say 3 months notice is not enough time and make up lame excuses. She then complains we never come to visit. We wanted to in January but it "wasn't a good time". Now we say well we can find some time in April - sorry - we're busy straight through until August. She guilts me for being a bad son for never coming to visit, but everytime I make plans to do so she comes up with a reason why I can't. If someone's coming to visit me from out of town I drop everything to accomodate them. Who is SO busy in retirement that they can't have their son and daughter in law visit for a few days sometime in the next 5 months? Since when is 3 months notice "way too little" for a high school graduation? Essentially, it's not and the truth is she doesn't want us around and thinks we're stupid enough to not doubt her ridiculous excuses. My Dad has totally lost his spine with her in the last couple of years and just stays quiet. WHAT can I do?

Voting Question: Should I cut my parents off?
(Mon, 15 Mar 2010 06:37:11 GMT)
My dad quit his extremely high paying job as a corporate VP in 2007 for no real reason, and had to bring money to the table to sell the awesome house he had, in a buyer's market (it finally sold in 2009) -- the house was totally paid off, BTW, my parents could have stayed there for almost no monthly fee (just the HOA). He decided to move himself, my mother, and my disabled brother to a retirement community in another state (where I also happened to be moving), where there were no potential jobs. I try to love my mother, but she's always been a physically, verbally, emotionally, and mentally abusive drunk who smokes chains of cigarettes. She never worked because she said she was too sick, but we know for a fact that she was making herself sick with her addictions. They both used to use recreational drugs in irresponsible excess. My parents moved into a house they couldn't afford, in this retirement community with no job prospects for either of them, when they were still in their early 50s. I don't know how they figured they'd be able to make ends meet on my dad's pension, the math doesn't even make sense, but I wasn't smart enough back then to realize their folly. They didn't consult with a lawyer or an accountant. My little brother is high-functioning autistic (has Aspberger's syndrome and a seizure condition), he lives with them. He gets social security disability money every month, and my mother takes it and spends it on groceries and, mostly, wine for herself. None of them have health insurance. I got a joint bank account with the parents so that I could transfer funds to them if they needed me to do so. As it stands now, I've given them over $3000 of my federal student loans (I'm in school), and I will never see that money again. The IRS levied the joint account when they failed to pay their taxes on the house sale and my dad's pension. I just faxed the info to the IRS recently to prove I had control over the account and no money came from my parents. Levy will be removed soon. I will get a new account. I'm moving out of the state we live in, even though my autistic brother still lives with them. My mother won't sop drinking and abusing my father, and my father wants me to get a townhouse where I'm moving so that they can all live with me. He sends me articles about how baby boomers live with their adult kids these days to merge resources, even though he wouldn't be able to bring money to the table to help me out (his entire pension is tied up in his house, a car, and his IRS payment schedule). He plays on my guilt a lot and tries to convince me that what he's asking is somehow normal. I'm not even 30, and they're not even 60. I feel like I'm being taken advantage of. They've been making my life more difficult than it has to be for a long time, by both their irresponsibility and their abuse, and I'm tempted to cut them off, with the possibility of extracting my brother from the situation soon after I'm out. Am I wrong? Is dealing with parents like this normal, and I'm just a selfish, ungrateful son? Do you beat your children, too, Crystal? Do you steal their money and buy booze with it? Crystal, I just read an answer you gave for a question asking about an abusive mother, you gave the opposite response. Stop using all caps and start exercising logical consistency.

Voting Question: Is There a job out there?
(Mon, 15 Mar 2010 01:08:30 GMT)
I was a teacher for 23 years until corrupt bureaucrats hung me up to dry after I was assaulted by a student and came away with a torn up back and PTS. Instead of helping me they tried to twist everything around and put me at the cause. The AFT steeped in it went to court my supervisors lied on the bible and I came away with over a year of salary signed a letter that I would never work for the district after 20 years and found out after several interviews that I was blackballed from ever teaching again. From 1998 to 2007 all I could do was sub, draw out all my retirement money to live on and worked for CompUSA from 10/03 to 06/07 as lead macintosh sales person and repair. Then in 10/07 I found a teaching job at a private school teaching science. I made a major and costly move to Conroe TX and 3 weeks into the job they laid me off due low student numbers. Since then I have been out of work the blackballing even reached 60 miles from Houston and all I could do is sub and struggle to pay my bills. Besides being a teacher I am highly proficient with the Macintosh computer. I was a member of the Houston Area Apple User Group for over 20 years were I did seminars on macgames utilities and how to care for your Mac. Around 2002 I tried my own Mac business but then Enron happened and I quickly went from a 40000 a year job to less than 10000 in 5 months and had to re-enter the work force. I nearly went bankrupt. Then I found CompUSA in 2003-2007 and the damn teaching job in 2007. Now I am looking for work in the Mac industry. If anyone wants a resume you can contact me at maclewconsultant@aol.com and I will email you a copy. All I can say is I am on SSDI Food Stamp and Gods hands.

Voting Question: Will Social Security be around when you need it?
(Mon, 15 Mar 2010 00:51:06 GMT)
i won't get it. read the following. Please star this question and ask others to respond Social Security to start cashing Uncle Sam's IOUs By STEPHEN OHLEMACHER, Associated Press Writer Stephen Ohlemacher, Associated Press Writer – 1 hr 14 mins ago PARKERSBURG, W.Va. – The retirement nest egg of an entire generation is stashed away in this small town along the Ohio River: $2.5 trillion in IOUs from the federal government, payable to the Social Security Administration. It's time to start cashing them in. For more than two decades, Social Security collected more money in payroll taxes than it paid out in benefits — billions more each year. Not anymore. This year, for the first time since the 1980s, when Congress last overhauled Social Security, the retirement program is projected to pay out more in benefits than it collects in taxes — nearly $29 billion more. Sounds like a good time to start tapping the nest egg. Too bad the federal government already spent that money over the years on other programs, preferring to borrow from Social Security rather than foreign creditors. In return, the Treasury Department issued a stack of IOUs — in the form of Treasury bonds — which are kept in a nondescript office building just down the street from Parkersburg's municipal offices. Now the government will have to borrow even more money, much of it abroad, to start paying back the IOUs, and the timing couldn't be worse. The government is projected to post a record $1.5 trillion budget deficit this year, followed by trillion dollar deficits for years to come. Social Security's shortfall will not affect current benefits. As long as the IOUs last, benefits will keep flowing. But experts say it is a warning sign that the program's finances are deteriorating. Social Security is projected to drain its trust funds by 2037 unless Congress acts, and there's concern that the looming crisis will lead to reduced benefits. "This is not just a wake-up call, this is it. We're here," said Mary Johnson, a policy analyst with The Senior Citizens League, an advocacy group. "We are not going to be able to put it off any more." For more than two decades, regardless of which political party was in power, Congress has been accused of raiding the Social Security trust funds to pay for other programs, masking the size of the budget deficit. Remember Al Gore's "lockbox," the one he was going to use to protect Social Security? The former vice president talked about it so much during the 2000 presidential campaign that he was parodied on "Saturday Night Live." Gore lost the election and never got his lockbox. But to illustrate the government's commitment to repaying Social Security, the Treasury Department has been issuing special bonds that earn interest for the retirement program. The bonds are unique because they are actually printed on paper, while other government bonds exist only in electronic form. They are stored in a three-ring binder, locked in the bottom drawer of a white metal filing cabinet in the Parkersburg offices of Bureau of Public Debt. The agency, which is part of the Treasury Department, opened offices in Parkersburg in the 1950s as part of a plan to locate important government functions away from Washington, D.C., in case of an attack during the Cold War. One bond is worth a little more than $15.1 billion and another is valued at just under $10.7 billion. In all, the agency has about $2.5 trillion in bonds, all backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government. But don't bother trying to steal them; they're nonnegotiable, which means they are worthless on the open market. More than 52 million people receive old age or disability benefits from Social Security. The average benefit for retirees is a little under $1,200 a month. Disabled workers get an average of $1,100 a month. Social Security is financed by payroll taxes — employers and employees must each pay a 6.2 percent tax on workers' earnings up to $106,800. Retirees can start getting early, reduced benefits at age 62. They get full benefits if they wait until they turn 66. Those born after 1960 will have to wait until they turn 67. Social Security's financial problems have been looming for years as the nation's 78 million baby boomers approached retirement age. The oldest are already there. As that huge group of people starts collecting benefits — and stops paying payroll taxes — Social Security's trust funds will shrink, running out of money by 2037, according to the latest projection from the trustees who oversee the program. The recession is making things worse, at least in the short term. Tax receipts are down from the loss of more than 8 million jobs, and applications for early retirement benefits have spiked from older workers who were laid off and forced to retire. Stephen C. Goss, chief actuary for the Social Security Administration, says the crisis has been years in the making. "If this helps get peop

Voting Question: Is retiring in Puerto Rico a wise economic decision?
(Sun, 14 Mar 2010 19:18:24 GMT)
So here's our plan. We are 40 years old and want to retire in Puerto Rico. My husband can retire at 56,but if he waits until he is 60 he will have 2.8 million in his 401k plus retirement pension of about 2,000/month from employer. We are thinking of buying a condo in Lequillo now, renting it out and paying it off before we retire.once we retire we would then move into the condo. This looks good on paper ,but is it realistic? How are the taxes, health care, living expenses etc... Any help, pros and cons or suggestions would be appreciated.

Voting Question: Am I saving enough for retirement?
(Sun, 14 Mar 2010 18:04:00 GMT)
I'm putting $15000/yr into my 401(k) and my employer is putting $10620 into it. I'm also putting $5000/yr into a Roth IRA. I'm 38 years old, and my wife is 31 and doesn't work so she's not saving anything. We currently have $231,000 in retirement savings. AM I saving enough for us to live comfortably at say a $100,000 retirement salary in 30 years?

Resolved Question: I need help with my grandmother..... Strange attitude change?
(Sun, 14 Mar 2010 02:41:00 GMT)
I have a grandma who is 87 years old and is recently living in a nice retirement home. She had to move to a rehabilitation place because she had a deep infection in her leg, so medical is paying for her trip to an assistant living until her leg is better. The second day, my grandma seems like she has totally lost it. She does not do any activities, participate in anything, and barely talks or holds eye contact. I'm very scared because I don't know if it is depression or if she is so old that she is just slowly losing it. I don't know what to do, because she has to stay there for 130 days, and if she keeps acting like this, I'm afraid her depression will worsen. What is happening and is it something to worry about? Will she be ok, and if not, what can I do to help her? When we visited her today we talked to the nurse that emitted her. She said it was most likely a depression, but she wasn't sure. I can honestly tell you she looked horrible. Like she didn't want to take showers, get dress, and she just stayed in her wheelchair and stared into space. I felt like crying because when I tried talking to her, she could barely communicate with me.

Resolved Question: How much should I keep as an emergency fund?
(Sat, 13 Mar 2010 18:54:41 GMT)
The 6 months living expenses thing is NOT an option. So basically I have 2 grand in saving. Now student loan repayments are coming soon. I have two part time jobs at the moment and I plan to spend about $500 a month on student loans starting next month (I have one private loan with a 12% interest rate so I'm trying to knock that out before the others are in repayment as well. Also plan on paying off ALL accrued interest so it won't capitalize. My other loans have a 6.8 interest rate) That $500 is AFTER I paid off my bills, food, maybe $100 in savings, and $100 for free-will purchases (let's face it, everyone wants to go out sometime. This includes fast food, shopping, movies, or whatever. But I don't spend out much so I might not even use all this). I would feel really comfy keeping that 2 grand in the bank for rainy days even though the savings interest doesn't even compare to the interest those loans are gathering. I was thinking maybe putting $100 away a month to build up savings... if that. Should I be saving more or focus on paying off the loans. Basically, having two jobs, I don't feel too scared about being unemployed since I'll have something to fall on if something happens. I also have a $3000 limit credit card (no balance on it) if I needed something (but since I have no car and I rent, I can't see myself ever having that problem. No big ticket items to worry about. I have renters insurance if you're thinking what if my place burns down or I get robbed.) So is it wise to keep that two grand in the bank or use it towards loans? And should I be saving more than $100 a month while trying to pay off loans? I was thinking any extra money, like if i pick up hours at work, would also go to savings or should I use that for loans? Should I be saving at all? I know savings is important long run but I'm hoping to be debt free in 5 years or less then I can worry about things like retirement. Maybe saving for a car or house is good but not thinking about owning anytime soon so I don't feel pressed about that. I just turned 22 if that helps but things in perspective. If you don't want to read the question, don't give an answer. I clearly said I'm 22.

Voting Question: how can i calculate the annual rate of return?
(Sat, 13 Mar 2010 15:55:43 GMT)
Assume that you are 30 years old today, and that you are planning on retiring at age 65. Your current salary is $45,000 and you expect your salary to increase at a rate of 5% per year as long as you work. To save for your retirement, you plan on making annual co ntributions to a retirement account. Your first contribution will be made on your 31st birthday and will be 8% of this year's salary. Likewise, you expect to deposit 8% of your salary each year until you reach age 65. At retirement (age 65) you will begin withdrawing equal annual payments to pay for your living expenses during retirement (on your 65th birthday). If you expect to die one day before your 101st birthday (Your last withdraw will be on your 100th birthday) and if the annual rate of return is 7%, then how much money will you have to spend in each of your golden years of retirement? guys please i don need the answers , am doing some works, just wanna someone to explain me how to do it..really thanks..peace and love

Resolved Question: Can someone please correct my essay?
(Sat, 13 Mar 2010 04:22:38 GMT)
This is a compare and contrast, any help would be great especially with comma splices and run-ons thank you!! The Charm of Magic City With a skyline like nowhere else in the world, Miami FL is an urban paradise. The buildings reach up into the heavens, mediators between the sky and the concrete street. The streets that move and seethe under the adoring eyes of the summer sun. The city has a heartbeat of its own; the heat can be seen rising from the ground, pulsing. With youthful eyes Miami seemed so vast to me, the skyscrapers and shoreline extended far beyond my comprehension. This place was the stage of my childhood, where I found out what friendship and love meant; where I discovered things about myself that live true to this day. I left Miami when I was 14 because my parents said that it was too dangerous for me. I never understood what they meant back then; I couldn’t fathom that the place where all my dreams were born, could be bad. I’ve come back to visit during Christmas, after many years have passed; the whole family got together at my grandmother’s house. There is a huge celebration, with more home cooked Cuban food than even an ambitious family restaurant. After talking with cousins’, aunts, and uncles and going out to my old haunts on south beach, I realize that the city just didn’t feel the same. The city itself hasn’t changed much, it’s still a hotspot for people looking to have fun and let loose. The place that I remember is just a façade, and has somehow melted away to reveal what was there all along. So with a veteran’s eye I take a closer look at the city I once loved, and see the decay and filth that was underneath the neon lights all those years ago. Miami was utopia for me, there was a huge world within the city limits for me to explore and experience. At any given time there was somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to. I can remember standing on Lincoln Ave, and marveling at the cacophony emitted by the tangling of so many people’s lives; it was an urban orchestra of speech and noise performed in a way that made it beautiful. The smell of overpriced coffee and sea water was like catnip for to a kitten. Being young and wanting to find out about society, and how people interact with each other; I was fascinated by the masses that flooded the beach on Saturday night. I could observe human nature and all the different lifestyles put on display; I could be a part of it all. I decide to take a ride down to the same spot during my visit and realize that nothing is like it was. The 45 minute drive, and then the 30 minutes spent driving around looking for parking was enough to make me insane. There were so many people on the street that I had to cruise at 5 miles an hour just to avoid hitting someone. The horde of people didn’t seem so interesting anymore, instead they were just a nuisance. The girls dressed in hot pink tutus, and the guys in black trench coats and eye liner didn’t arouse my enthusiasm for the city, I just looked at them funny and paid little attention. Walking down the same strip, carrying a cup of that same overpriced coffee I used to smell, a different aroma filled the air; it was stale beer and cigarette smoke. The mighty kingdom of the Lincoln strip has been reduced to an overcrowded, inconveniencing maze of drunken college students. Besides a retirement destination, Miami is known for its nightlife. Back when I partied all the time, the club scene was something out of the movies; although I was too young to be there, I always got in. My Favorite club was the crowbar, where people like Madonna had been known to visit. Walking in was like entering a different world, the huge ceiling to floor tropical fish tanks and dripping crystal chandeliers made a lasting impression. The vibrations from the blasting music entered my ears and spread through my body like neurotoxic poison from a snake bite; taking control of me and forcing me to dance all night long. There was always a house party or rave to attend, where strobe lights made things move in slow motion, and the techno music could be heard for at least 2 city blocks. Laughter and dancing were on the forefront of my agenda; everyone around me seemed to be having the time of their lives. Upon my return to this party destination, my feelings are far from lighthearted and carefree. Before even reaching the club I notice the graffiti laden walls; I now know what the symbols on the sides of buildings mean. I also know that I can’t drive down certain street or wear certain colors in some areas. There was always deviance before, but neighborhood squabbles are a far cry from the gun fights and robbery that is seen now. The growth and evolution of violence can be tracked; it’s a toxic wave of noxious fumes that creeps through alleys leaving a visible trail of corrosion in its wake. Voting Question: Suppose I punch out my soon to be ex-boss.?
(Fri, 12 Mar 2010 20:39:51 GMT)
Here's my story, sorry if it's a bit lengthy. At the tragic expense of my grandfather's sudden and early death, I've recived my multi-million dollar inheritence earlier than anticipated. He was an executive for Warren Buffets Berkshire Hathaway and bought up several hundred shares of stock while they were dirt cheap. My current financial situation is this: A 41 year annuity of $207'000.00 a year (Actually direct deposits monthly.) Also a secluded cabin in the Hawaiian islands as my permanent residence, and 1.5 Million remaining in uncommited dollars spread out in three bank accounts, that will be my retirement when my annuity runs out at the age of 61. As you can see, I'm a 20 years man and set for life. Further more, and you can correct me if I'm wrong about this, that's why I'm here asking, but it would seem that I have nothing to lose when I go in for my final check. You see, a week from this friday, I go in for my final check. I am assistant manager at a golf course and absolutly despise the boss. She has made the last year of my life miserable, and instead of going out with a handshake, I'm thinking of going out with a literal bang. Because, I live in Pensacola county Florida, and my flight to my new life in Hawaii is 11am a week from friday in Tampa. So, two hours before the flight, I get there at opening at 9am, noone else is there, I get my check, rough her up a bit then high tail it out of there. This is my opinion: Even though Tampa, the location of an airport is a neighboring county, the process of extradition remains nonetheless. So, even if she can tell the police I'm there (Which I do not believe she would know), there would be way too much legistical stuff to be able to get me before the flight takes off. (Even if they did, i could pay my bail, then leave, and consider it worth it.) As single mom collecting child support, we can rule out her suing. She would not only have travel expense that she likely cannot afford, but there's absolutly no way on earth she can afford an attorney who can take on the one I hire. Not to sound like I'm gloating, but I can afford any attorney on earth, she cannot. Expect her to not even consider civil action. I don't like her attitude, but she's not downright stupid. Last but not least, this IS a repost. I'm asking again because last time everyone was talking about extradition. Consider it this way: The DA is going to pay out of his budget, provided by taxpayers, to have me extradited all the way back from Hawaii over a simple assualt charge. He's gonna cover the expense of my arrest in Hawaii, and pay to put me on a plane, and fly me halfway across the pacific just to get to the west coast, than transfer planes on or two times back to tampa? Simple assault charge? I think we can rule out extradition of that distance for 90 % of all crimes. So, am I foolproof.

Open Question: How can Americans unite to repair our enlightened constitutional Nation without resorting to a violent revolt?
(Fri, 12 Mar 2010 18:26:30 GMT)
Most Americans are divided today. Liberals vs. Conservatives, Hippies vs. Suits, the list of polarities is endless. George Washington warned us about the European bankers intent to use this type of division to distract us and prevent us from focusing on the priority of watching over our government. Most of us agree the U.S. government is a corrupt structure and a growing number understand how the European bankers have manipulated our Federal Reserve, and central banks of most nations, to control us, bankrupt us and steal our property, or as Jefferson said "Your children will wake up homeless in the fields of the nation your fathers conquered." Many people propose riots, civil unrest etc., and many radio and web hosts are revealing these trends, but talking about it doesn't solve the problem. It will require action and soon - we are a bankrupt nation today where 80% of stimulus for renewable energy went to foreign corporations instead of to U.S. communities to create jobs and reduce our reliance on oil. This is just one area our leaders have failed - the list is growing and even folks like Willie Nelson and Jessie Ventura know it. The question becomes "How do we correct the course of our nation without a violent revolt?" Voting and waiting 4 - 6 years is far too slow, and the train wreck economy and looming fiscal disaster is at our door - it surrounds each of us every day. This question, above all others, to me anyway, is the most important question of the 20th and 21st century, both for our nation and the planet; for without answering this first, nothing else mankind does will matter much. Its not likely the bankers, oil, chemical and drug companies are going to manage the global environment, our water supplies, standard of living, retirement accounts, oceans and habitats for the benefit of humanity and other species. They've failed miserably in their half-hearted attempts thus far, but for us to care for our nation and planet, we need to be solvent, continue to learn and become more enlightened - as our founding fathers had hoped - and therefore, if we are to cure our nation's ills and help heal a torn planet, I believe we are going to have to start with Washington, our State Governments and local governments with a rapid series of reforms that are mandated - demanded - by citizens. The critical word - "rapid" - isn't in the vocabulary of most politicians at the Federal level - which means the word "revolt" will soon be the word of the day. To me, this is a step backwards, an admission of our failure as citizens and prima facie evidence of the failure of our leaders to create and manage a sustainable, "enlightened" government. Is there an alternative to armed insurrection and revolt to "take our nation back", or is this the natural course of history - as also predicted by Jefferson? It is not true that a government - any government - can stop a mass movement. It is true that they can disrupt small groups. However a large, UNITED, coordinated citizen body is without any solution except to either heed their will - or slaughter them - which in theory would enrage those remaining, and thereby trigger the revolt this question aims to avoid, as I do not believe destructive violence is the best course of action. It would indict us all as animals, incapable of resolving this within the framework of the "enlightened" government structure we are blessed to have. How do we work within the system we have without destroying the fabric of our nation or pressing our leaders to turn our own military against us? (which begs another question indeed).

Voting Question: My grandparents are contemplating about moving into a retirement home with assisted living?
(Fri, 12 Mar 2010 05:14:01 GMT)
They have been searching around, and are looking for a place with fun weekly activities, social gatherings, and a place that allows cats. They are narrowing it down to a few places and have asked me which one i like most. This is one of the retirement homes, and it looks like the activities would be fun for them. It is called Living Our Life Retirement Resort. And it has a very neat website. www.LOLtrain.com I really think that this would be the best one to live in. Any thoughts?

Open Question: i hate my mother, but she's dying?
(Fri, 12 Mar 2010 04:27:40 GMT)
I am a 30 year old woman with six year old twin sons. My mother divorced my father when I was eight. She remarried and her new husband was very emotionally and verbally abusive towards me and her. She had a son with him when I was ten. I raised my brother because she worked two jobs and I basically did all the work at home, from cooking, cleaning, bathing my brother, doing homework with him, etc. My relationship with my stepfather was nonexistent. I hated him for how he treated me and her. He called us all types of names including, whores, bitches, etc. However everytime I stood up to him, she defended him and beat me instead. They both were so strict that I never went to a movie theatre with friends until I was 18! When I turned 18, I decided I couldnt live there anymore so I decided to dorm in college. I worked and went to school. I learned how to become independent and I loved it. When I was 22 she finally divorced him, but my relationship with her was nonexistent because we stopped talking because of him. So I made the first step to try to fix things with her. Except she thought she could still tell me how to live my life. She hated my exboyfriend, hated my career choice, hated the fact that I went out on weekends with friends to unwind, etc. She called me a wild child. My exboyfriend was physically abusive of me and when we broke up, I found out I was pregnant with my sons. She asked me if I was going to have an abortion...why? I had a career, I was independent, I can have my children as a single woman and raise them as a single woman. After a while she warmed up to the idea of being a grandmother and she asked me to move in with her because she wanted to help me with my sons. So I did. I thought that I was finally going to build a relationship with the woman who gave birth to me. We had more downs than up while I was there. I couldn't go out ever because now I was a "mother' and mothers don't get time for themselves, I literally became the cleaning maid for her and her spoiled son, and every chance she could she would say how she had a house and a car and everything at my age and that I didn't have anything. I had my apartment, my brand new car, my career..are you kidding me?? I payed her "rent" because I felt it was the responsible thing to do as a grown up and it helped get her out of foreclosure. Two times her house went into forecloser and I saved the house with my 401K retirement money. (It was easily more than 10K) I began to date someone when my sons were three and it didnt work out because he cheated on me. She loved him and so bc I broke up with him, I was not putting enough effort. Shortly after I began to date the wonderful man who I am currently engaged to. She called me a whore because I was jumping from man to man. She also didn't like him because he was legally seperated and getting a divirce. I left her house and moved into my own place with my children and soon after he moved in with us. I was so happy and finally felt like i was living my life with my family and then I found out she was diagnossed with stage IV intestinal cancer. She was sick, and losing her house. All of the money I put away for my own first home, I gave to her to save the house. My fiance forgave her for the way she treated him and we all agreed it would be best if we moved into her house so that I can be there to help take care of her. I finally thought this would be the turning point for her and I and I was finally going to get the value I thought I deserved. She was never loving, never affectionate, and at her weakest she began to show signs of love. For eleven months all I did was be her caretaker. (Chemo, radiation..I did it all) I paid her bills because she was barely recieving from s.s. and my lazy brother didn't have a job. My fiance helped fix up the house, and did what my eighteen year old brother slacked on. My mother asked for forgiveness for judging him wrong because she saw how good of a man he really was. I helped my brother fill out college applications and a job. In the meantime, I had decided to return to school myself, so I was juggling work, my sick mom, my children and school. My brother began to drink heavily and I tried many times to talk to him. Later I found out he was starting to smoke marijuana, so I confronted him. My mother became so crazed with the fact that i called her son out on being irresponsible and not helping any of the situation we were in she began to attack me. My sons, my fiance and i literally began to live in our bedroom from morning till night and never stepped out. She stopped talking to us and my brother (her precious son) would look at me and laugh as i walked by. I even overheard her trashtalk me to her family and friends that "She's only mad cuz I didn't die yet." It broke my heart. My own mother was bad mouthing me..I couldnt believe it. One Sunday this past December, she came into my room and demanded I pay her almost twice what I was paying in my own apartment

Resolved Question: Did the Gov. give us a separate maintainace decree when they excluded me from his social security and med?
(Fri, 12 Mar 2010 01:05:06 GMT)
My husband and I were living together in the same home when he retired and I was excluded from his social security and medicare benefits because i have not reach retirement age yet. I wanted to file head of household on my tax return because it was clear to me that I am on my own but mainly because we have minor children in the home and need the credits.. I was told I could not do so because my husband had to be living out of the home for 6 months..? Since that is one of the test that must be met and requires that we have "a separate maintanace decree" I just could not understand why the IRS and S.S. don't know or understand that they already seperated us.If we file married , they go in and recalculate our taxes by using my little gov. pension to see how much his S.S. is taxable and I don't think that is fair either since I do not share in any of his benefits. Neither of us have outside jobs. Do you think this "wifeless" S.S.entitlement letter my husband received for himself "only" is considered a "seperate maintanance decree"? Is this one of the reasons seniors would get divorced in their retirement" Shame !Shame!

Resolved Question: Please share your thoughts on this quote from George Carlin?
(Wed, 10 Mar 2010 12:52:01 GMT)
“The most unfair thing about life is the way it ends. I mean, life is tough. It takes up a lot of your time. What do you get at the end of it? A Death! What's that, a bonus? I think the life cycle is all backwards. You should die first, get it out of the way. Then you live in an old age home. You get kicked out when you're too young, you get a gold watch, you go to work. You work forty years until you're young enough to enjoy your retirement. You do drugs, alcohol, you party, you get ready for high school. You go to grade school, you become a kid, you play, you have no responsibilities, you become a little baby, you go back into the womb, you spend your last nine months floating... ...and you finish off as an orgasm.” Thank You, AJ

Resolved Question: How long will a Paramedic live after retirement?
(Tue, 09 Mar 2010 11:07:49 GMT)
I have heard (often from many sources) that the post retirement life expectancy of a front line ambulance worker is low, <5yrs. Has anyone else heard this & if so, can a reference be given to support it? Hope to get lots of answers......... Cheers. Just to add a bit for the reasoning behind the idea of a shortened retirement; Shift work. Irregular eating patterns. Irregular sleeping patterns. The stresses involved in the actual job. Periods of relative inactivity interspersed with periods of intense activity. Etc, etc...

Resolved Question: How can somebody say they read the stimulus bill and did not see any tax breaks?
(Mon, 08 Mar 2010 15:28:42 GMT)
Individual Tax Cuts: 1. "Making Work Pay" Tax Credit (Sec. 1001, Page 195). In tax years 2009 and 2010, the Making Work Pay provision will provide a refundable tax credit of 6.2 percent of earned income up to $400 for individuals and up to $800 for married taxpayers filing joint returns. 2. Increase in the Earned Income Tax Credit (Sec. 1002, Page 198). Go to the stimulus bill for all the details, but it essentially expands this benefit for the working poor. 3. Increased Eligibility for the Refundable Portion of Child Credit (Sec. 1003, Page 199). In 2009 and 2010, families who don’t earn enough to pay income tax would be eligible to claim the $1,000 child credit. 4. "American Opportunity" Education Tax Credit (Sec. 1004, Page 199). Increases the Hope Scholarship Credit to $2,500. 5. Refundable First-time Home Buyer Credit. (Sec. 1006, Page 202). This extended and increased the first-time home buyer tax credit from $7,500 to $8,000. 6. Temporary Suspension of Taxation of Unemployment Benefits (Sec. 1007, Page 203). This exempts from taxable gross income the first $2,400 of unemployment benefits. 7. Tax Credits for Energy-Efficient Improvements to Existing Homes (Sec. 1121, Page 208). This provides up to a $1,500 tax credit for qualified energy efficiency improvements. 8. Sales Tax Deduction for Vehicle Purchases (Sec. 1008, Page 203). This allows people to write off state and local sales taxes related to the purchase of a new vehicle costing up to $49,500. 9. Premium Credits for COBRA Continuation Coverage for Unemployed Workers (Sec. 6432, Page 348) 10. Economic Recovery Credits to Recipients of Social Security, SSI, Railroad Retirement and Veterans Disability Compensation Benefits (Sec. 2201, Page 336). This was a $250 payment for senior citizens, disabled veterans and disabled people living on Social Security benefits. 11. Temporary Reduction of S Corporation Built-In Gains Holding Period from 10 Years to 7 Years (Sec. 1251, Page 228). Other Business Tax Cuts: 1. Advanced Energy Investment Credit (Sec. 1302, Page 231). That latter term is defined, in part, as young adults "not readily employable by reason of lacking a sufficient number of basic skills." 4. Delayed Recognition of Certain Cancellation of Debt Income (Sec. 1231, Page 224). 5. Election to Accelerate Recognition of Historic AMT/R&D Credits (Sec. 1201, Page 220). Voting Question: How to travel indefinitely and cheap all over the world?
(Sun, 07 Mar 2010 07:23:01 GMT)
I'm beginning to question just how important it is to live a life where you work, go home, sleep, then go to work again. After all, the dollar is about to collapse so that means retirement funds are essentially no good. I'm starting to think, maybe I should just say screw it, quit work, leave the materialistic lifestyle, and go travel around the world and have as much fun as I can. Can anybody recommend books and websites that talk about how to travel cheap and indefinitely? For example staying in hostels and what type of jobs you can work along the way, and how to get those jobs?

Resolved Question: Employment after military career?
(Sat, 06 Mar 2010 23:43:56 GMT)
So say a guy serves in his branch for thirty years. He's got a degree. What does he do when he gets out? Do a lot of companies hire late-40 early-50 year olds with no experience but what they did in the military? Would the retirement pay from his career be enough to live off of without another job? I suppose I'm a bit confused as to what a career guy does after he serves.

Voting Question: This is a question mostly for males?
(Sat, 06 Mar 2010 08:38:58 GMT)
A 22 year old female is trying to decide between two options: 1. She works for the next 3 years, lives with her parents, and puts all of the money she makes (about $30,000 a year) into a mutual fund, giving her an estimated $107,000 or so at 9% by age 25, when she would start college (paid for by her parents). If she graduated in 4 years, she would be about 29 when she got a bachelor's degree, and due to shy personality traits, might not bring in much more than $40,000-$50,000 annually, of which she would continue to contribute at least $10,000 a year to the $107,000, with an aim of it growing to millions by retirement. Option 2: She goes straight to college now at age 22, graduating with a bachelor's degree by age 26, not investing a penny (focusing on school work) until age 26. She can go to either graduate or medical school from here, giving her a much bigger income by age 30, but postponing investing by about 10 years (from 21 to 30). While medical school would enable her to rival the investing, she could have hundreds of thousands of dollars of student loan debt to pay off before any comparable investing could start. Or, instead of graduate school, she can start working with her bachelor's degree and investing what she can, but she missed the extra years of it growing from 22 to 30. Here are the main issues: Rather than it being just a numbers game with the money, it seems like women have a shelf life that is shorter than men's. In other words, if she were to postpone college (which she's already behind on) for another 3 years while investing money and living with her parents, she's missing the years between 20 and 25 in which she could hang out with a new social group, have people over (either to her dorm or to an apartment her parents helped with for college), etc. I guess the main questions for guys are these: How much is a woman's youth worth to you? Would you rather meet a 25 year old woman who's starting college but already has money saved up, or would you rather meet a 21 year old woman when you're both in college? Would she be more likely to kick herself for not having $100,000 saved up by age 25, or for not starting college until 25? Thanks. She doesn't want kids ever, so that's not even a factor in the equation. Trying to study and work at the same time is a bad idea in this situation, especially if graduate school or medical school is in the picture, because grades would need to be top notch and stress would need to be at a bare minimum, as classwork would be stressful enough entering nearly 4 years late, having forgotten things, etc. The only way working and going to college simultaneously would work would be for a bachelor's only, which wouldn't require a certain GPA for a good graduate or medical school. And, as you said, just a bachelor's combined with shyness is not a pretty money picture.

Resolved Question: Financial Aid Help. I live in a house with my mom and grandparents. Filling out college cost estimator?
(Sat, 06 Mar 2010 06:10:54 GMT)
My mom is unemployed and hasn't worked for the past two years; she only recieves money through my dads support checks. My grandpa pays all the house bills and such. He is also retired. My grandma works at a retirement home full time. My mom has custody, but I pretty much support myself. I pay for my own car, cell phone, clothes, and things like that. She uses the support check she recieves from my dad for school lunches and things. I also work part time and get around twenty to thirty hours a week. I just don't know where to put my grandparents on this fasa form. If anyone knows how I should go about doing this the help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Resolved Question: is there a way to keep my dad with alzheimer's from getting out the front door?
(Sat, 06 Mar 2010 04:50:07 GMT)
My parents live in a retirement center and my dad goes out in the hallway while my mom is busy in another room or in the bathroom. Does anyone know of a lock or other way of keeping him from being able to get out the door if she is in the shower, etc.
