Open Question: Can we keep GIT-MO for a state theme park or active retirement community?
(Fri, 12 Mar 2010 07:53:22 GMT)
Since it seem to bother conservatives that closing git-mo will cause supposedly chaos why not put those facilities to use as tourist destinations for departing neo-con republicans a win-win deal

Voting Question: Can I go to an accredited university while collecting unemployment?
(Sun, 07 Mar 2010 22:04:04 GMT)
I work in telecom in Texas, and my current employer has occasional "early retirement packages" where I can get a lump sum payment and uncontested applications for unemployment benefits if I voluntarily terminate my employment (like say, if my position is moving to an office out of state, etc). I am pretty sure you can't apply for goverment student loans while receiving unemployment checks, but would it be possible to pay out of pocket for community college or re-training while I am on unemployment? I thought I remembered a law against this the last time I was laid off (mid 90s). Thanks for any info.

Resolved Question: Do you agree or disagree with this statement by Robert Hall?
(Thu, 04 Mar 2010 03:43:55 GMT)
"I'm 63 and Im Tired" by Robert A. Hall I'm 63. Except for one semester in college when jobs were scarce and a six-month period when I was between jobs, but job-hunting every day, I've worked, hard, since I was 18. Despite some health challenges, I still put in 50-hour weeks, and haven't called in sick in seven or eight years. I make a good salary, but I didn't inherit my job or my income, and I worked to get where I am. Given the economy, there's no retirement in sight, and I'm tired. Very tired. I'm tired of being told that I have to "spread the wealth" to people who don't have my work ethic. I'm tired of being told the government will take the money I earned, by force if necessary, and give it to people too lazy to earn it. I'm tired of being told that I have to pay more taxes to "keep people in their homes." Sure, if they lost their jobs or got sick, I'm willing to help. But if they bought McMansions at three times the price of our paid-off, $250,000 condo, on one-third of my salary, then let the left-wing Congress-critters who passed Fannie and Freddie and the Community Reinvestment Act that created the bubble help them with their own money. I'm tired of being told how bad America is by left-wing millionaires like Michael Moore, George Soros and Hollywood Entertainers who live in luxury because of the opportunities America offers. In thirty years, if they get their way, the United States will have the economy of Zimbabwe , the freedom of the press of China , the crime and violence of Mexico , the tolerance for Christian people of Iran , and the freedom of speech of Venezuela . I'm tired of being told that Islam is a "Religion of Peace," when every day I can read dozens of stories of Muslim men killing their sisters, wives and daughters for their family "honor"; of Muslims rioting over some slight offense; of Muslims murdering Christian and Jews because they aren't "believers"; of Muslims burning schools for girls; of Muslims stoning teenage rape victims to death for "adultery"; of Muslims mutilating the genitals of little girls; all in the name of Allah, because the Qur'an and Shari'a law tells them to. I'm tired of being told that "race doesn't matter" in the post-racial world of Obama, when it's all that matters in affirmative action jobs, lower college admission and graduation standards for minorities (harming them the most), government contract set-asides, tolerance for the ghetto culture of violence and fatherless children that hurts minorities more than anyone, and in the appointment of U.S. Senators from Illinois. I think it's very cool that we have a black president and that a black child is doing her homework at the desk where Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation. I just wish the black president was Condi Rice, or someone who believes more in freedom and the individual and less arrogantly of an all-knowing government. I'm tired of a news media that thinks Bush's fundraising and inaugural expenses were obscene, but that think Obama's, at triple the cost, were wonderful; that thinks Bush exercising daily was a waste of presidential time, but Obama exercising is a great example for the public to control weight and stress; that picked over every line of Bush's military records, but never demanded that Kerry release his; that slammed Palin, with two years as governor, for being too inexperienced for VP, but touted Obama with three years as senator as potentially the best president ever. Wonder why people are dropping their subscriptions or switching to Fox News? Get a clue. I didn't vote for Bush in 2000, but the media and Kerry drove me to his camp in 2004. I'm tired of being told that out of "tolerance for other cultures" we must let Saudi Arabia use our oil money to fund mosques and madrassa Islamic schools to preach hate in America , while no American group is allowed to fund a church, synagogue or religious school in Saudi Arabia to teach love and tolerance. I'm tired of being told I must lower my living standard to fight global warming, which no one is allowed to debate. My wife and I live in a two-bedroom apartment and carpool together five miles to our jobs. We also own a three-bedroom condo where our daughter and granddaughter live. Our carbon footprint is about 5% of Al Gore's, and if you're greener than Gore, you're green enough. I'm tired of being told that drug addicts have a disease, and I must help support and treat them, and pay for the damage they do. Did a giant germ rush out of a dark alley, grab them, and stuff white powder up their noses while they tried to fight it off? I don't think Gay people choose to be Gay, but I damn sure think druggies chose to take drugs. And I'm tired of harassment from cool people treating me like a freak when I tell them I never tried marijuana. I'm tired of illegal aliens being called "undo

Resolved Question: Where is the best overseas place for retirement?
(Sat, 27 Feb 2010 15:39:56 GMT)
I have heard and read a lot about such places as Panama, Ecuador, and Mexico, but I am having a hard time deciding which one is best suited towards my personal criteria. Below, I have listed my criteria and value weighted each one from one to ten with one being not important and 10 being VERY important. 1) Weather-hot (at least 80 every day)-minimal to moderate rain- 10 pts. 2) Health Care-cheap and reliable-10 pts. 3) Real Estate-affordable, preferrably cheap-8 pts. 4) Crime-the lower the better-8 pts. 5) Close to the beach-should be within a one hour drive-8pts 6) Infrastructure-7 pts. 7) Close to a major city-in or near a big city preferrable-7 pts. 8) In a community setting. Would love to mingle-6 pts. 9) Language- English or Spanish. Will consider French or Portuguese if conditions right-6 pts. 10) Special benefits for retirees-4 pts. 11) Proximity to the U.S.-would be nice, but not a must-4 pts. No matter what we decide, we plan on visiting first for at least 2 weeks, and renting for at least 6 months before making any permanent decisions.

Voting Question: Joe Jedlowski, How do I determine what type of senior housing arrangement is best?
(Thu, 25 Feb 2010 05:29:08 GMT)
Joe Jedlowski, After familiarizing yourself with the types of residential care, it’s time to conduct a thorough inventory of the senior’s wants, needs and goals. Some key issues to consider: Joe Jedlowski,Temporary versus long term care: An older person may go to a nursing home for rehab following a surgery or stroke, then return home. In other circumstances, a senior’s needs are better served by planning a move into a situation that is likely to remain the same for the many years to come. Independence: Can the senior live alone, and more importantly, does he/she want to? Or would living in a more service-oriented environment be more nurturing? Privacy: Independence and assistance generally form a continuum: privacy decreases as the need for assistance increases. If the senior's desire for privacy is paramount, independent living, assisted living, or a Continuing Care Retirement Community would all be preferable to a board & care home or a nursing home. Needs for personal care: How much and what kinds of personal or “custodial care” are needed or desired? There are online needs assessment questionnaires to help determine this and then match the care needs with the right type of housing. Needs for medical care: If the senior has a chronic illness that necessitates special medical care, or ongoing services of medical professionals, independent living and even assisted living may not be suitable. Costs: Learn about the financial aspects of senior housing to determine what options are affordable for you. Walk through and evaluate several care facilities or senior communities that seem suitable. Reviewing facility comparison checklists can help you determine which type of environment fits the senior resident’s requirements and preferences. Seek guidance from professionals who are experts in senior housing issues such as medical social workers, case managers or geriatric care managers. They can help with all phases of this process: identifying goals and values, assessing needs, determining what is affordable, and suggesting appropriate facilities.

Resolved Question: Question About College for a 40-Year-Old Female...?
(Thu, 25 Feb 2010 01:16:03 GMT)
Bear with me, this is a bit lengthy. I am female, nearly 40 with family, especially 76 year old father coaxing me to pursue a college degree to land "secure employment" with benefits. Let me shed a little light with regards to my particular situation. I reluctantly graduated high school in '88 *wishing I'd repeated that year citing personal reasons* and, with the persistence of both my parents, began that fall in community college, randomly choosing a major to 1) get my parents off of my back and 2) declare a major just for the sake of declaring a major. My grandfather put away money since the time I was a baby in the stock market for my college, but I used it to fulfill transportation, living expenses and a trade school instead *I had always wanted to be a barber -- since the age of five* This, not surprisingly, was an unacceptable aspiration and, several years later, continued to be coaxed to finish a four-year-degree. This time, not only by my grandfather, but also my father and my younger brother and his wife. To make an insanely long story short, I spent those 20+ years traveling, barbering *for 15 years total*, working in various administrative positions in various industries and had a blast, along the way, doing so. There's one drawback: I have an extremely tiny retirement *my fault*, no benefits other than health insurance through my ex *not that I consider THAT a benefit -- more so a necessity* and some of the best income produced of any field I worked in in the barbering industry, $6000/mo, to be exact. Not too shabby. Still, the barber *out of work, currently* that I am, and the part-time entrepreneur *in another field* that I've become, my family still hounds me about that four-year college degree. Now, I am no dummy. I can do math *citing reasons to be diswayed by bloated interest rates for student loans* and I know my personality. The biggest problem with regards to attending college or, shall I say, the biggest problemS with regards to attending college right now *for my personal situation* are the following: -- I cannot sit still through classes, much less sit still through four full years, more if I need to go part time. -- There's not one major in college that I care to pursue. Not ONE. -- Not that I have anything against them, nor do I realize that all fall within this category, but I don't want a white collar position. No offense to white collar workers. My whole family is white collar. I am the only one who isn't. -- I can do math. I am not stupid. I know what I would need to repay for student loans after private, public or community colleges. I shudder with the thought of even having a debt of $5000. I don't have credit card debt. I don't own a credit card *my wisdom*. I have marginal medical debt *thank you, knee surgeries and asthma issues!*, but that only totals an amount in the ball park of $2000 -- manageable, comparitively speaking. I don't wish to repay loans once I hit the age when I begin drawing social security. I don't qualify for a grant -- still *legally* married, and I don't qualify for academic scholarships, grades aren't good enough, thanks to my high course withdrawal rate and F's for failing to withdraw courses once I unofficially dropped them back in the late 80's. -- I want to own a business when the opportunity arises and don't see it as a possibility by taking out student loans. There's no such thing as good debt/bad debt. It's ALL debt and I'd rather be debt free once the time permits to apply for a small business loan. So, there you have it. My life in a fairly sizeable nutshell. Question is this: How do I effectively explain to my family, once and for all, that I am NOT college-bound and that I have other, more important, more attractive aspirations? Appreciated are the intelligent and inobtuse replies. Thanks.

Resolved Question: US Army Reserves Nurse question?
(Tue, 23 Feb 2010 02:48:55 GMT)
Ok so I already know that the Active Duty Army will NOT take an RN as an Officer if they only have an Associates and a license (to be and AD Officer you have to have a Bachelors). I read on the GoArmy website ( http://www.goarmy.com/amedd/nurse/corps_benefits.jsp ) that in the Reserves you only need an Associates degree in Nursing (ADN) and your license to become a Nurse Corps Officer. How does that work? In case the link doesn't work here is what it said: RESERVE NURSE CORPS BENEFITS When you become a nurse and Officer on the U.S. Army Reserve Health Care Team, you can work in your community and serve when needed. In addition to generous financial incentives and retirement plan options, you'll have the opportunity to enhance your career and provide our Soldiers and their Families with the best nursing care. SPECIAL PAY Provides up to $15,000 ($5,000 per year for a maximum of three years) to nurses with a diploma or an associate degree in nursing. <------------------------------ <----------------------------------- <----------------------------- Provides up to $30,000 ($10,000 per year for a maximum of three years) to nurses with a BSN, MSN, DNSc or Ph.D. in nursing. Provides up to $37,500 ($12,500 per year for a maximum of three years) for critical care nurses with a BSN or higher. As a certified registered nurse anesthetist, you can receive special pay up to $45,000, ($15,000 per year for a maximum of three years) paid in three yearly increments of $15,000.

Resolved Question: If the home of a parent must go up for sale due to them not being able to live in it anymore...?
(Sun, 21 Feb 2010 07:02:30 GMT)
...because it's a rule of the retirement community my father lives in, where do those assets of $$$ go if the person selling it will be the sibling given POA status...AND in the "will" of the parent states the $$$ be split between siblings equally...but I also assume only "after" the parent's death? My father, just diagnosed with Alzheimer's, will be moving in with my sister (POA), having to sell his home. Since he is too ill to change his will now, can I do anything to make sure the $$$ from the home is split between us siblings equally...or since the home is sold before my father's death, his will then becomes null and void regarding his home and belongings? BTW, my last question on this issue...blessings for your help :)

Resolved Question: Retirement blues : Father too anxious about upcoming retirement as he feels he would be idle...?
(Mon, 15 Feb 2010 04:25:09 GMT)
My father is 62 and is about to retire from service , he has been working for almost 41 years. He has been getting more and more anxious about the upcoming retirement as he feels he would be doing nothing at home. My mother has another year to go before she too retires. I have suggested my father to consider working at some not-for-profit(NGO) organization or help out at the church , so he can keep himself busy as well as get satisfaction of doing something for his community or pursuing some hobby. Finance is not an issue because he would be getting his pension. I just want my dad to be happy about his retirement and spend more time doing what he wanted to, without feeling he is IDLE. Any other ideas you may have please let me know. PS:I stay in a different city, my parents are based in Delhi.

Resolved Question: How to Explain FAFSA Answers in Detail?
(Mon, 15 Feb 2010 02:45:25 GMT)
Hello there, My basic question is: is there anyway to talk to someone about why certain items on your FAFSA are the way they are? Here's the backstory: I'm about to enter my fourth year of college as a Junior (double-majoring, will graduate in the 2011-2012 school year). For the previous three years, I have received lots of very helpful financial aid because my family is very poor and I could not afford to go to college without it. Throughout community college, I received about $2,000 in cash despite the fact that I only had to pay $1 for tuition each semester. During my first year of University, I received about $7,000 through the Pell grant and CalGrant programs (I was supposed to receive an additional $3,000 from the school itself, but the California budget cuts put an end to that). I have just completed my FAFSA for the 2010-2011 school year. This year is going to be particularly tough for me because my father, the sole source of income, was fired and we lived the entire 2009 year on unemployment. However, my father is in the process of fighting to get his job back and hired a lawyer in order to help him. He had to draw $30,000 out of his retirement just so that he could hire this lawyer. Unfortunately, he had to report that money as income, so his tax return shows that he made over $50,000 last year, when he actually got less than $25,000 from unemployment and the other part of the money went straight to his lawyer. Because of this, FAFSA has calculated that my father is expected to pay $4,000 towards my education next year and my eligibility for a Pell grant is calculated at $1,700 MAX (I got $3,500 last year). I probably don't have to tell you how silly this is, given the information I have typed above. My current hope is that the calculations will be reanalyzed when they discover that my father made $0 from working last year and we have less than $1,000 in savings. But is there any way I could contact someone and let them know my FAFSA details to correct this inflated EFC? Thank you.

Resolved Question: Ex Husband did not disclose retirement/asset in divorce - am I still entitled to half?
(Tue, 09 Feb 2010 18:19:24 GMT)
During our divorce 10 years ago, my ex husband did not disclose his retirement fund as an asset. We live in California (a community property state). I was really young and dumb and didn't know anything about stuff like that - but I was technically entitled to half of which he put away for retirement while we were married right? Is there anything I can do about it now? Now don't get all touchy its just a question. I should note that his income tripled and I didn't go back for a child support modification in all of that time. I am not saying I am going to do anything about it even if I could - I just want to know if its possible.

Resolved Question: Visit old people or visit hospital patients?
(Sat, 06 Feb 2010 22:31:41 GMT)
For school, we have to pick something to do for community service, we then do this service once a week. The only two options I would want to do are either... Visit a retirement home or Visit patients in a hospital. I would like to visit with old folks so I could give them someone to talk to. I could even talk to them about stuff I like, like Elvis and classic films. But I don't know if that's all I'll have to do for them. I would like to visit patients in the hospital, because I like the idea of making people feel better and brightening up their day. But I don't know if I could handle talking to sick people, what if they're dying? It'd be strange to become friends with someone who you know is terminally ill. What do you think I should do? Please answer my other question too... http://nz.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=As.EbF_Rn0szHHG9guAt7sXIZwx.;_ylv=3?qid=20100206132446AAWVwaF

Resolved Question: Is the department of labor now trying to tax my 401K plan?
(Thu, 04 Feb 2010 15:08:28 GMT)
The Department of Labor and the Department of the Treasury (the "Agencies") are currently reviewing the rules under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) and the plan qualification rules under the Internal Revenue Code (Code) to determine whether, and, if so, how, the Agencies could or should enhance, by regulation or otherwise, the retirement security of participants in employer-sponsored retirement plans and in individual retirement arrangements (IRAs) by facilitating access to, and use of, lifetime income or other arrangements designed to provide a lifetime stream of income after retirement. The purpose of this request for information is to solicit views, suggestions and comments from plan participants, employers and other plan sponsors, plan service providers, and members of the financial community, as well as the general public, on this important issue. http://www.zerohedge.com/sites/default/files/2010-02028_PI.pdf Hey Dbags in the Dept of Labor, what happens if I want a lump sum from my 401K? You going to regulate that as well?

Resolved Question: Is this considered statutory rape if I...?
(Tue, 02 Feb 2010 00:21:15 GMT)
Now that I got you to look I need some help. I recently left my parents house to live on my own and it's been difficult. You see they recently split up after my father (he used to be a lawyer but after he got disabled from a car crash he had to retire) found out my mother (she's an all-female boxing coach) had been cheating on him for years with several women from her job they got divorced. I had to take care of my Pep pep (he has Parkinson's and cant live by himself so he lived with us) for a few weeks while my father looked around for a new place to live and a handicap accessible job. He found a position as a proffessor at a community college and found a flat a few miles away from my new house. My mother kept the house and most of the furniture from the divorce and has been living with several of her "friends" since. My problem is I can't even look at my mother for what she did to my father and she want's me to move back in and help around the house because she sprained her pelvic bone while getting off the mat from boxing. We found my pep pep a nice retirement home to live in that I'm paying for and if I move back in with my mother this will put me at risk of losing my job as a software engineer for a banking company because it's already far from where I live but if I move back in I'll have to drive an extra 30 min to work everyday and I need this job espeacially in this economy. I also have developed an early onset of Parkinson's Disease and it's hard for me to move around without worrying as it is. I dont know what I should do. My dad told me to do it and I cant talk to my pep pep because he hates my mom so I dont know who else to turn to. Please answer serously. I really need help and it's hard enough to type as it is without worrying about people mocking me or making fun of my situation. Don't call me a "troll" either. I find it extremly offensive espeacilly because have Parkinson's Disease and I thnk it's disgusting racist people call people with medical conditions they cant help "trolls".

Resolved Question: How do I tell my mom that she is not my financial responsibility?
(Sat, 30 Jan 2010 19:42:30 GMT)
I have been supporting my mom and helping her out a lot financially between the ages of 18 and 23. I pretty much worked 30-35 hours a week while attending a really hard college and worked two jobs during school vacations to help support her and myself. I'm 27 and am about to graduate from law school. Anytime I finish something major (like a big paper or something), she frequently says "we did it" and it makes me angry because I have no idea what she is talking about (I am the one writing the papers, not her and the most she ever does is cook a meal for me once in a while and wake me up from short naps). I feel like she is taking credit for my accomplishments and believes that I once I get a job she will benefit financially in terms of me giving money to her when I have no intentions of doing so. She didn't/couldn't contribute a dime towards private high school, college, or law school. I had financial aid and scholarships for the most part but still have to pay back $170 K in loans. She has been underemployed, working on average 2-5 hours each week (I'm lucky if she makes $100 a week) and no matter how hard I try to pursuade/motivate/encourage/force her to take her GED and get a real 9-5 job, she refuses to do so. I have given her information and contact numbers for job training/social services for 50+ aged people, given her information for community-based job training services and she either keeps saying she'll go next week or flat out says she won't go because her knee hurts, she's tired, or it's too cold. I know she is suffering from an undiagnosed depression (it has taken me a year to get her to agree to see a psychiatrist and she will see one for the first time in 1 month or so) but I feel like although I love her very much, I can't sacrifice my life to pay for her ongoing mistakes. I'm too young to be responsible for taking care of a parent who is only 62 and capable of working to support herself but chooses not to. I give her spa certificates as birthday and christmas presents but realize that I myself have never been to a spa because I can't afford it. I'm only 27 and I feel like I should be worrying about buying clothes, planning a vacation, or saving for my own retirement, not worrying about how much money I have to give my mom so that she can catch up on two months of missed rent. Has anyone else had this experience? How can I get through to her without leaving her to be homeless?

Resolved Question: PLEASE HELP! Maryland state tax nightmare!!!?
(Sat, 30 Jan 2010 18:52:07 GMT)
I am having complications filing my state tax on Turbo Tax for my Maryland Part-Year Resident (Form 502). I have consulted the MD State Tax information line but they have not been helpful, only telling me they recommend using the "iFile" on their site but it doesn't answer my questions still. I have tried asking the Turbo Tax community but I haven't had any luck there either. I will briefly describe my situation. I worked in MD until 4/28/09. I moved from MD on 06/03/09 back to WA state. In this time I have unfortunately been unsuccessful for a new job still. After moving to WA state I had zero income except for the following: 1.) 1099-R; $553.45 (Federal Income tax withheld $110.69) was pulled from my 401k Profit Sharing Plan. No state tax for WA was withheld since there is none. 2.) 1099-G; $2025.00 in unemployment paid by the state of Maryland. Again, this is after I moved away from MD. I have run into the following obstacle. 1.) I am asked the following from Turbo Tax; ************************************* Adjustments for Part-Year Residents As a part-year resident, you need to enter two sets of figures. First, total the losses and adjustments to income reported on your federal return that you had in the period you were not a resident of Maryland. Then total the income you reported for the time you were not a resident of Maryland. Non-Maryland Losses and Adjustments: Non-Maryland Income: What value do I enter for the two fields of "Non-Maryland Losses and Adjustments" and "Non-Maryland Income" then? Do my 1099-G and/or 1099-R constitute as Non-Maryland Income? Turbo Tax gives a brief explanation of Non-Maryland Income however I am still uncertain: ***************************************************************************** Adjustments to Income Subtract any of these items if you earned them during your nonresident period: - Wages - Investment income (interest and dividends) - Refunds of state and local income taxes - Pensions - Annuities - IRA distributions - Unemployment compensation - Social security and railroad retirement benefits ***************************************************************************** I appreciate your time and help. If more information is necessary (federal tax amounts) please let me know and I will gladly provide it.

Resolved Question: How to contact a 55+ Homeowner's Association Board member to do a targeted survey (details follow)?
(Thu, 28 Jan 2010 18:28:02 GMT)
I'm really stuck here and need some advice... I've been asked to get feedback on a program from representatives of 55+ retirement communities. It's a motivational program which gets people to participate in any kind of fitness activity. I'm not selling anything. Basically, I'm conducting a feasibility study trying find out if the program could work in these communities. In fact, after a community reviews the material, if they want to try the program out, we will give them everything they need FOR FREE. We intend to modify the program based on any and all feedback. The problem is that whenever I talk to anyone to find the names of the right people to show the program to, I'm met with suspicion. They think I'm going to try to sell them something or that it is a scam... which is not the case. I understand WHY this is happening. There are a lot of scams targeting seniors and I'm being lumped into this crowd. How does an honest person get around this? What is the secret? There are usually volunteer members of the home owners' association or board of directors who could give me this feedback. How can I reach them in this environment? Thanks for your advice. No, Lona. The surveying I'm doing NOW and the program I am offering NOW are free. This is a feasibility study to see if there is a market for such a service. Down the road, once we make the modifications to the program... based on input from the communities who help us... there will be a commercial program that will be marketed to OTHER 55+ communities around the nation. The communities that help us will already have the program... again for FREE.

Resolved Question: Is this considered community service?
(Mon, 25 Jan 2010 21:06:28 GMT)
I play piano for a retirement home, but I am part of a music school. I don't get paid, but the people pay to get in, I don't know if their money goes to the retirement home or our music school hosting the event. After the performance, our director sends letter to all of us and i was wondering if I could use that as evidence for community service?

Resolved Question: Whats the "fix" for the Social Security program?
(Wed, 20 Jan 2010 12:24:03 GMT)
If there was a program which kept folks too old to work from starving to death, would you be willing to contribute to it. or would you rather just let em starve? See, thats all SS was designed to do. Take care of the seniors who had worked hard, fought the wars, paid their taxes, built the country and raised their children to be law abiding, God fearing, contributors to community. A noble and worthy cause. Wealthy folks who do not need the benefits should not collect them...Duh. Eliminate the "cap". FICA taxes are only paid on the first 100k of earnings. It should be 100% of earnings. This would ensure that our old folks would survive their retirement from the workforce. Wouldnt that be nice?

Resolved Question: There is a lot of truth to this what do you think ?
(Wed, 20 Jan 2010 00:20:44 GMT)
"I'm Tired" by Robert A. Hall I'll be 63 soon. Except for one semester in college when jobs were scarce, and a six-month period when I was between jobs but job-hunting every day, I've worked hard, since I was 18. Despite some health challenges, I still put in 50-hour weeks, and haven't called in sick for seven or eight years. I make a good salary, but I didn't inherit my job or my income, and I worked to get where I am. Given the economy, there's no retirement in sight, and I'm tired. Very tired. I'm tired of being told that I have to "spread the wealth around" to people who don't have my work ethic. I'm tired of being told the government will take the money I earned, by force if necessary, and give it to people too lazy or stupid to earn it. I'm tired of being told that I have to pay more taxes to "keep people in their homes." Sure, if they lost their jobs or got sick, I'm willing to help. But if they bought McMansions at three times the price of our paid-off, $250,000 condo, on one-third of my salary, then let the left-wing Congress-critters who passed Fannie and Freddie and the Community Reinvestment Act that created the bubble, help them with their own money. I'm tired of being told how bad America is by left-wing millionaires like Michael Moore, George Soros, and Hollywood entertainers who live in luxury because of the opportunities America offers. In thirty years, if they get their way, the United States will have the economy of Zimbabwe, the freedom of the press of China , the crime and violence of Mexico, the tolerance of Iran for Christian people, and the freedom of speech of Venezuela . Won't multiculturalism be beautiful? I'm tired of being told that Islam is a "religion of peace," when every day I can read dozens of stories of Muslim men killing their sisters, wives and daughters for their family "honor"; of Muslims rioting over some slight offense; of Muslims murdering Christians and Jews because they aren't "believers"; of Muslims burning schools for girls; of Muslims stoning teenage rape victims to death for "adultery"; of Muslims mutilating the genitals of little girls, all in the name of Allah, because the Qur'an and Shari'a law tell them to. I believe "a man should be judged by the content of his character, not by the color of his skin.." I'm tired of being told that "race doesn't matter" in the post-racial world of Obama, when it's all that matters in affirmative-action jobs, lower college admission and graduation standards for minorities (harming them the most), government contract set-asides, tolerance for the ghetto culture of violence and fatherless children that hurts minorities more than anyone, and in the appointment of US Senators from Illinois. I think it's very cool that we have a black president and that a black child is doing her homework at the desk where Lincoln wrote the emancipation proclamation. I just wish that it was someone who believes more in freedom and the individual, and less arrogantly of an all-knowing government. I'm tired of a news media that thinks Bush's fundraising and inaugural expenses were obscene, but that think Obama's, at triple the cost, were wonderful; that Bush exercising daily was a waste of presidential time, but Obama exercising is a great example for the public to control weight and stress; that picked over every line of Bush's military records, but never demanded that Kerry release his; that slammed Palin, with two years as governor, for being too inexperienced for VP, but touted Obama with three years as senator as potentially the best president ever. Wonder why people are dropping their subscriptions, or switching to Fox News? Get a clue. I didn't vote for Bush in 2000, but the media and Kerry drove me to his camp in 2004. I'm tired of being told that out of "tolerance for other cultures" we must let Saudi Arabia use our oil money to fund mosques and madrassa Islamic schools to preach hate in America , while no American group is allowed to fund a church, synagogue, or religious school in Saudi Arabia to teach love and tolerance. Did a giant germ rush out of a dark alley, grab them, and stuff

Resolved Question: Floyd Mayweather Jnr' "I Have A Dream Speech"?
(Mon, 18 Jan 2010 12:20:10 GMT)
I Have A Dream by Floyd Mayweather Jnr I am happy to join with you today in what will go down as the greatest demonstration of arrogance, cowardliness, and incivility in the history of boxing. Not so long ago, I had the opportunity to become the greatest boxer of all time by fighting the current best pound for pound boxer in the world, but squandered it with my travesty of demanding an unprecedented drug test from him. So, I have come here today to dramatize a shameful condition. In a sense you have come to cash a check. When my henchmen drafted the magnificent words on that fight contract, we were signing a promissory note to which every boxing fans was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all fans would be guaranteed the fight of the century. But, it is obvious today that my cohorts and I have defaulted on this promissory note. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, I have given the boxing fans a bad check, a check which has come back marked "insufficient funds." I must admit, I failed to gather courage sufficient enough to fight the warrior that has engulfed the entire boxing community with his outstanding performance in and out of the ring. It would be fatal for the boxing nation to overlook the urgency of the moment. This frigid winter of the boxing fans' legitimate discontent will not pass until I fight the "The Pac Storm". The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of boxing until the day I fight the man. I have come to realize that to be great, I have to fight the great. I cannot walk alone. I will not seek to satisfy my thirst for greatness by drinking from the cup of fearfulness and arrogance. Therefore, I say to you today, my friends, in the process of gaining my rightful place in boxing history, I am fighting the #1 Pound for Pound fighter in the world --- myself. In order to conquer that demon with a "0" mark on its head, I am announcing my retirement. I have come to realize that the only brave thing for me to do, is run. So even though I will face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in our family of crooks. I have a dream that one day boxing will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that Money Mayweather is the greatest boxer of all time; greater than Ali or Leonard." I have a dream today. I have a dream that I am whipping that punk ass Manny Pacquiao. This is my hope. This is the faith that I go back to my Las Vegas mansion with. With this faith I will be able to transform the jangling discords of our family into a beautiful symphony of ganghood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to do drugs together, to beat women together, to go to jail together, to stand up for incivility together, knowing that we will be free one day. And for boxing to be once again a great sport, this must become true. And for this to become true, I entreat all americans to support me just as they have supported our brave american troops overseas. And when this happens, we will be able to speed up that day when all boxing fans will be able to join hands and sing Free at last! Free from my obligations to the fans! Free from Pacquiao's wrath! Free from fear! Thank Money almighty, I am free at last!

Resolved Question: Paying Taxes on Military Retirement as part of Texas Community Property settlement.?
(Sun, 17 Jan 2010 20:07:18 GMT)
I receive 26% of his 'disposable' military retirement pay (I think DFAS figures my percentage after SBP and VA waiver ..IF the waiver is not CRDP...CRDP is included in disposable retirement pay see DFAS web site). Because it is part of the divorce decree it doesn't fall under the 'Gift Tax' category, and because the divorce decree clearly states that no payments to me are to be construed as income as classified /defined by IRS, rather those payments fall under the law as equitable distribution of property (Texas). However IRS is required to collect taxes on any Retirement Pension Plan, therefore I have to pay taxes on it FIRST under that law..Right? But if its' not taxable as 'income' to me will I get the money back I have to pay on it? There is a paragraph in my divorce decree that states "NO ALIMONY'..."funds paid under the equitable distribution are NOT ALIMONY. So this is confusing? The IRS said no those funds are not reported as income for you and I have to attach my divorce decree every year to get or to waive any taxes I may pay or be assessed on those funds. And the payee is not allowed to claim it as a deductible type of spousal support or alimony or gift. Does this make sense to any of you?

Resolved Question: Question about an employer changing pay structure suddenly...?
(Tue, 12 Jan 2010 19:34:55 GMT)
The employee was making a base salary of $65,000 per year. This employee also makes commission selling life care and apartments in a multi-million dollar retirement community. For every "sale" this employee makes roughly $4000. The community has been sold and the new owner has immediately decided to change the pay structure to commission only. He has asked this employee to sign the new agreement on pay. Is it legal for him to do that if the employee refuses to agree to it? Can she refuse to sign until a lawyer has looked at it? I forgot to add that she has a job acceptance letter that the previous owner signed with pay specified.

Resolved Question: Does anyone else find it funny that I was being called a "Mark" Monday because I was watching Raw?
(Thu, 07 Jan 2010 21:48:26 GMT)
Im probably not the only one, but on Monday many users in this section called me a Mark because I watched Raw and posted a question saying "Everyone is jumping on the TNA bandwagon" I just found it funny because Ive been watching wrestling for quite sometime and just because I dont like TNA and watched WWE I was being called a mark. Was any other person treated like this? Just wandering and BTW the only good thing about TNA Monday was Strip Poker, the nWo return and Meth Hardy return was already confirmed to happen and everyone acted like it was so unexpected. I dont know about you, but Im not "Crossing The Line" to watch a retirement community and a druggie take up air time. I have alot of respect for Flair and other veteran wrestlers in TNA but the nWo storyline was worn out enough in the late 90s in WCW, and I dont need to see it again.

Resolved Question: Drug testing help a.s.a.p.! best answer get 10 points!?
(Tue, 05 Jan 2010 17:20:19 GMT)
Okay so I work at an assisted living home (for those of you who don't know its a retirement community). Upon hiring I was drug tested and passed. I've been there for about 3 months now. I hadn't done any drugs throughout my working there. December 26th my friend and I had about 2 bowls shared. Then the next night (the 27th) I smoked another bowl to sleep. I didn't do it anymore after that. We had an unexpected drug test (January 4th) at work yesterday to check if narcotics are in our system because someone stole pills from the residents. I'm 5'4'' tall. I weigh about 108 lbs and I'm 18. Do you think I failed the test? If so would checking for marijuana and narcotics be the same thing? If i got fired what would happen? WOuld i be able to get another job?! I swear i never stole the pills. Please help!!!!!!

Resolved Question: WIFI SECURITY QUESTION?
(Mon, 04 Jan 2010 22:04:58 GMT)
Is it true that for someone to hack into your WIFI, they have to be within range of the router signal? Even if someone did hack your WIFI, what protection does the firewall offer (I have Mcafee). Why I'm asking is, I set up a WIFI connection in a rental property I'm in, and didn't put in a strong password. I'm afraid if I try to change it I'll screw sometihng up. I had a hard time setting the connection up. I'm in a retirement community in Florida, and I'm not worried about any of my old neigbors hacking into my system. And, I doubt if someone's driving around this area searching for WIFI connections. Should I attempt to put in a stronger password based upon this? I'd appreciate any answers/advice. Thanks!

(Mon, 04 Jan 2010 12:25:27 GMT)
I am thinking of buying an independent or duplex Villa or Bungalow in a gated community for retirement in or near Chennai. If that is not available, I may also buy a vacant plot and build a modern home. I need the address of a good real estate agent who can help me in selecting and purchasing such a property. Also, I need to know how much the Real Estate Agent will charge me for his services. Thanks

Resolved Question: Is Brookdale Senior Living better than Sunrise Retirement homes?
(Sun, 03 Jan 2010 19:11:42 GMT)
My family is looking to put my grandmother in a retirement home. I work at Brookdale in the restaurant so I know that Brookdale is flashy but the company doesn't take very good care of its residents, especially in Assisted Living. I know there's another retirement community, Sunrise, and it looks okay but I'm not sure if it's any better than Brookdale. Anyone know?

Voting Question: Online Finance/Budgeting Software for Couples?
(Sat, 02 Jan 2010 06:21:53 GMT)
Hi everyone! Need some advice here... I am looking into different (free) online software options - my man and I are trying to organize and consolidate our finances. I have been researching and so far, have found the following options: Mint, Quicken Online (they bought mint so it seems their basic version IS mint now), Geezeo, Wesabe, Rudder, Yodlee, Buxfer, Expensr, BudgetPulse, MoneyStrands Does anyone in the Yahoo Answers community have any opinions on any of these, based on experience with them hopefully? Pros/con for specific sites, that sort of thing? Remember, we are trying to create one profile that would encompass each of our individual AND joint bank accounts/credit cards/loans (investments/retirement too, maybe?) and collect them all together in one place, so that either of us can log on anytime and work with all of this info easily. Also, hopefully, we'd like a program that allows us to pay bills directly...? Thoughts? Thanks!

Resolved Question: Seriously considering retirement from Yu-Gi-Oh? Reasons I should or shouldn't?
(Mon, 28 Dec 2009 22:49:37 GMT)
As most of you probably know, I play Yu-Gi-Oh and I'm quite good at it. But as time goes on, it seems like these cards are just taking up space and wasting my money. I am seriously considering retirement, and I want to know what the answers community thinks about this. And by the Answers community, I mean the people who commonly answer in the Card Games category, not some newbie or idiot who just writes Yu-Gi-Oh is gay or something similar. In short, say Yes, you should retire because etc. or, No, you shouldn't retire because etc. I will still keep up with all the information on it, answer questions, and help you with deck construction, but I won't play the game itself. that's just the thing- I have no constructed deck

Resolved Question: Best retirement communities in Florida ?
(Mon, 28 Dec 2009 13:50:12 GMT)
I have a severely disbled adult step-son who lives with my wife and I. We are interested in retiring to Florida and would like to know what are the best retirement communities in Florida that are accessible to good health care ? We are not golfers but would like a condominium with a community recreation center and pool. My step-son is wheelchair bound so we need a 1 floor ranch style condominium. What are some good areas that would suit our needs ? What are the names of some good condominium/retirement communities that would suit our needs in these areas ? How much should we expect to pay to live in a non-golf oriented condominium in Florida ?

Resolved Question: Is Social Security in Jeapardy Now that Medicare has Gone Down?
(Sat, 26 Dec 2009 03:11:38 GMT)
The government no longer feels an obligation to pay the entitlements under Medicare. So, what's next? Is Social Security the next thing to go? Obama has followed in the footsteps of G.W. Bush on many issues, not doing different, just doing a bit more. But G.W. Bush said it would be better to privatize social security -- just get rid of the benefit to the entitled persons, and tell them that they need to provide for their own retirements on a private investment basis. We could forget about the pay-ins they have done over the past 40 years. Tell them they are on their own now. Obama got rid of Medicare in less than one year. He's got three years left to go. He's just getting started. Next is Social Security. Toss those 96 million Americans out on the street, what have they done for the "Eyes on the Prize" people lately? Nothing, since they climbed those cliffs at Point du Hoc. It's time to organize the community -- for the benefit of the "people" in the "community" now! Emma Thompson had it right -- just take what you need ACORN -- this is your time! Just to be clear about this question: I am seeking knowledge about whether the Social Security program is in jeapardy. Anyone who violates my first amendment rights in asking this question by falsely complaining should beware. Beware. Nuff said!

Resolved Question: R&P: Let's decide -- What are the best songs of 2009 (Round 1 - Part 3)?
(Wed, 23 Dec 2009 23:32:53 GMT)
Welcome, to the next installment of the First Annual Rock & Pop Best Song Competition (2009 Edition). You, the community here at Yahoo! Answers, nominated 350+ songs, your favorites of the year, to face-off in head-to-head battles, tournament style, to determine the best songs of this calendar year. I do ask that you listen to all of the songs... don't vote on name alone. Listen to them, weigh them, and then choose with reason, which song is the better of the two in the given match ups. Please star this early and often, e-mail your friends and let them know this is happening. E-mail strangers and enemies too, if you think they might be interested. I want to get as many votes as we can... make this a true R&P event. Let me know if you have trouble with the last.fm or youtube links and I'll get on them ASAP. MATCH UP 1 "Stone Cold Metal" - Ensiferum http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cO4QqaoFuso Finnish heavy metal, whose name translates to "sword bearer." Epic, sweeping pictures are painted of heroic deeds, ancient in nature, sometimes related to the Norse gods. VERSUS "Dark Horse" - Converge http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Asam2mLd5S0 math metal in the vein of Isis, Dillinger Escape Plan and the like. This album has had praise heaped up upon it. The technical proficiency and progressive tendencies are impressive, but can a Massachusettes metal band possibly beat the ice giants of Norway? MATCH UP 2 "Two Weeks" - Grizzly Bear http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjecYugTbIQ creepy video aside, "Two Weeks" is Veckatimest's most immediate song. Lush arrangements and harmonies, a beautiful melody. VERSUS "Coast of Carolina" - Telekinesis http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oO1O9NkJW74 Seattle nostalgic indie rock. MATCH UP 3 "My Girls" - Animal Collective http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zol2MJf6XNE Votes seemed to be split between Summertime Clothes and My Girls -- had people clearly loved one more than the other, the winner would have been the top seed in this competition, by far. My Girls is catchy, with a harmony that hearkens back to Brian Wilson. Drawing from world music, the Beach Boys, and electronica equally, and yet making a beautiful, cohesive whole with possible crossover appeal is an impressive feat. VERSUS "When They Fight, They Fight" - Generationals http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LFlBfSnpzQ There's an interesting 50'-60s pop group vibe to this, and the throwback production quality only underlines that feeling. Indie pop with sugar on top. MATCH UP 4 "The Fear" - Lily Allen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-wGMlSuX_c Does anyone think this might actually be the last we hear of Lily Allen? There was "retirement" talk when her last album came out. VERSUS "The Strangers" - St. Vincent http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQ3jUjFtG80 a disintegrating relationship, pulling our heroine down with it. And an experiment in textures detailing her fight below the surface. MATCH UP 5 "Peeled Apples" - Manic Street Preachers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DCB7bTGcFo The words are that of their long dead front man... VERSUS "Dive" - B'z http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-N5EjFjeOk The biggest band from Japan. These guys have been around since the 80s over there.

Resolved Question: References for a job?
(Wed, 23 Dec 2009 03:29:27 GMT)
I am currently applying for a job, and I just got fired from my first job as a waitress in a retirement home b/c I was late one to many times (according to a tough policy), I was good at the job itself, I just had that problem which I deeply regret. The job I'm applying for is the exact same thing, just in a different community. I am debating whether or not to put that I worked at my former job as a reference, because it would count as expierence, but I also got fired. I am unsure of what would provide the best chance of getting this job. I am 16 and this would be my second job and not a career job, just somehting for money for college
