Resolved Question: Books similar to "Paranoia," Joseph Finder?
(Wed, 17 Feb 2010 04:06:34 GMT)
Just finished the awesome book Paranoia, by Joseph Finder and I've been itching to reading another book like it. Here's the synopsis of the book, in case it helps you with any suggestions, thanks! Author Joseph Finder has written about espionage and international affairs for the New York Times and other newspapers, and is also a member of the Association of Former Intelligence Officers. So it would stand to reason that he had seen it all in the realm of espionage. Yet, in the acknowledgements at the end of the book, he states that his research on his other novels "has taken me around the world and into places like KGB headquarters in Moscow, but nothing prepared me for how strange and fascinating I'd find the world of the American high-tech corporation." In Paranoia, he combines high-tech business with corporate security and espionage to create an exciting thriller that the reader will not soon forget. Adam Cassidy is the quintessential slacker who is tired of his job at Wyatt Telecom. He diverts corporate funds to throw a large retirement party for a loading dock employee, and he fully expects to be fired for it. But instead he is threatened with criminal charges if he does not agree to steal highly confidential product plans from Trion, a rival of Wyatt. With the help of the Wyatt's CEO, security chief, and executive coach, he is groomed for an executive job at Trion. He is taught to breach the tightest corporate security and turn over his findings. Thus begins his life as a corporate spy, where the game he is playing becomes more and more treacherous, his loyalties to his friends and employers are stretched to the limit, and he is caught in a web of deceit from which there seems to be no exit. The characters are well drawn and believable. Finder expertly depicts Adam's struggle with his conscience, his problems with his ailing father and best friend, his worries about being unmasked as a spy, and his fondness for his Trion CEO. This makes him a very sympathetic protagonist. The two corporate presidents are strongly contrasted: the Wyatt CEO is ruthless, aloof, and vain; the Trion CEO is paternal, benevolent, and demands honesty. Also included in the interesting cast of characters are a quirky staff engineer, some power-hungry middle managers, a jealous and competitive coworker, and a shady security chief with a penchant for violence. The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat, and the final plot twist was a powerhouse. Not only is this a fast-paced thriller, but it provides fascinating facts about espionage and corporate security. Each section defines an espionage term, which is then exemplified in the story line. I was shocked to learn about how lax corporate security can be, permitting access to password-protected PCs and locked offices and file cabinets. Even badge readers and biometric scanners can be circumvented. This is definitely worth reading, but be sure to schedule it for when you have some spare time, because once you start it you will have trouble putting it down.

Resolved Question: Doesn't this piece by the Far Left Huffington Post sum up how damaging Coakley's is and will be to the Dems?
(Thu, 21 Jan 2010 01:37:39 GMT)
The impact of Brown's election is even more far-reaching than health care. Now that Republicans are in control of 41 Senate seats, they can block the passage of any substantive Democratic legislation with a unified filibuster. With President Obama now looking increasingly weak and Democratic poll numbers falling, large party losses in November look virtually certain. Politically, Republicans thus have no reason to help Obama claim any legislative victories. In 2009 with 40 votes in the Senate they did this to good effect, and now with enough Members to stave off a cloture motion, there is little question they will continue holding up significant legislation, likely making all the items on the Democratic wish list - cap-and-trade, a jobs bill, robust Wall Street regulation, immigration or bankruptcy reform - dead on arrival. And this to say nothing of the impending retirement threat: with Coakley's defeat, numerous Democrats will head for the retirement exits, telling themselves that if Democrats cannot hold Ted Kennedy's seat in the bluest of the blue states, there is little point in staying for and enduring an electoral bloodbath in November. You can rest assured that Pelosi, Democratic Congressional Campaign chairman Chris Van Hollen and powerful New York Sen. Chuck Schumer are now burning the phones to assuage their terrified colleagues and blame the loss solely on Coakley. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mark-greenbaum/coakley-loses-heres-what_b_428766.html

Resolved Question: Once again -- a solution for the economic doldrums?
(Sun, 22 Nov 2009 02:47:42 GMT)
New projections show little recovery despite the bailouts and stimulus directed toward the banks and corporations, nor do propositions for tax-breaks seem to offer much. Banks in particular seem to have returned to their carpetbagging, raising interest rates and lowering available credit, while continuing to give bonuses and golden parachutes to their executives. Meanwhile, news reports say retailers are already desperately cutting prices to try and bolster holiday sales. In Miami where I live (and am facing bankpruptcy), every week sees new exposures of felony corruption in government, while the State has ingeniously disguised what I would estimate as a 30% real unemployment rate by simply closing all the unemployment offices. I filed online (the only method) and received a refusal of benefits letter which said "...the State of Florida has no record of your qualifying employment...". Of course not. I worked in New York last year. I followed the recorded message after waiting half an hour, only to be given another 800 number which in turn gives another message after another half-hour wait: "Due to the volume of calls, we are unable to take your call at this time. (*Click*)." A dozen tries like that and I realized I was facing a brick wall. SO HERE IS MY SUGGESTION. If the problem is indeed getting money into the public's hands as the experts say -- why not circumvent the banks? Take those people like myself who fell victim to the banks' usurious practices of selling "debt-equity" to one another and charging arbitrary and stratospheric interest rates (mine are as high a 31.4%). Select those who have repaid the principle, say, 3 times over as I have -- and make those debts amnestied by law, either permanently or for a period of time like the eighteen months that the banks were allowed to continue their practices which will become illegal in February of 2010. Or even six months! In my case, that would give me $600 each month to put directly back into the enconomy -- and I am sure there are millions like me. Please, abstain for calling me an idiot for borrowing money at 30% as has happened when I offered this idea in the past. My loans were not "introductory rates" that expired, but fixed-rate below 10% that were sold from one bank to another which set new rates as allowed by the small print in the credit-card agreement; a practice which is now illegal under the law. The most onerous of these was Chase, which took over my card and account when it was gifted all of WAMU's assets by the FDIC. Thus, Chase has collected from me for the last 18 months on a debt for which it paid nothing, and meanwhile paid THEIR bad debt though my taxes, as well as part of the recent $65M "retirement package" given the CEO of bank of America which also holds one of my notes.. That one originated at Suntrust, was sold to MBNA which raised the rate from 8% to 24.9%, and then on to B of A which raised it to 29.9%. I have been paying that one faithfully for 9 years, and -- once again, their bailout and their executives windfalls as well. That's about it. Now on disability, I can pay no more. So, 90 days delinquent, I am facing bankruptcy a age 60 as I said. Meanwhile Chase declared last-quarter profits of $3.47Bn, and harasses me daily for the $2K I "owe" them from WAMU, ruining my credit rating so badly I cannot even get a Christmas part-time at Macy's because of my poor FICO score. Like I said: amnesty the debt. Given the chance with the publicly supported bailout, the banks and brokers have not shown any indication they will rehabilitate. So why not give me, the consumer -- and people like me who have shown good faith by paying consistently over a long time -- a chance to do better? Reuben: Despite the seemingly condescending "just simply", I did enjoy the links you supplied to the Cabalist prophet. I liked his stating his viewpoint in an unequivocal way. The thing is with prophets; from Isaiah to Nostradamus -- what they predict is unprovable before the fact, and often arguable afterward. It's when philosophy begins to call itself science that I get worried. Take Josef Goebbels, for instance. frenzy: Right with you up until that last sentence denouncing President Obama. What has he conceivably got to do with the creation or existence of the Federal Reserve? P.S. frenzy: ...If that's who you mean by "Oma". Unclear to me. It's just a guess that was a typo.

Resolved Question: Ways to make money owning a chunk of land in new york state?
(Tue, 21 Jul 2009 14:46:01 GMT)
To make a long story short, i'm asking this question for my parents sake. They have a lot of land that was passed down to them but the problem is, as they get older it's getting harder and harder for them to make the bills. The stock market crash of last year made them lose thousands of dollars that they were saving up for their retirement. Now they are unsure of when or even if they will ever be able to stop working (my mother being a hair dresser, and my father working a low income job). I worry for them because they have been struggling all their lives (just like many, i know) to make ends meet. The idea arose to me that there might be a way for them to make money with the land they own. I'm not talking anything like a tourist attraction or anything of that nature but perhaps natural resources, ect. They seem to be very down for wind turbines or virtually anything to help them out. They just don't know how to get started and neither do I. My question is if any of you had any good ideas as to helping my parents make some money to ease their pain. They are so stressed out and I just want to help them. Thank you P.P.S- the already sold more than half of it to the state to preserve the forests a couple years ago. Home Building is NOTTTTTT an option. :/ Ps- selling the land is not an option, that would be the last thing they want to do. :C

Resolved Question: What ever happened to Obama's first Car Czar?
(Thu, 16 Jul 2009 04:10:05 GMT)
The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday night that Rattner was involved with payments at the center of an investigation into an alleged kickback scheme at New York state's pension fund. Sourcing their information to a "person familiar with the matter," Journal reporters Craig Karmin and Peter Lattman reported that Rattner, who was then an executive at Quadrangle Group, an investment firm he co-founded, met with a "politically connected" consultant to discuss a finder's fee. Quadrangle later paid a $1.1 million fee, and received a $100 million investment from the New York State Common Retirement Fund. http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0409/21348.html "An administration official said Rattner was leaving on his own." Yeah, before they frog walk him out of his office in chains. “He determined that this was the right decision for him and his family at this time,” said the administration official." What a guy huh? http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0709/24876.html Whoops another corrupt Democrat on the Obama team has bit the dust, to be replaced by yet another dunce with ZERO experience, fits right in with the Dumb and Dumber, Obama and Biden, gotta love it, now with Franken the burned out comedian, the entire Democrat comedy is complete, including the three stooges Biden Pelosi and Reid

Resolved Question: Really need help with my speech which is due tomorrow!!!!!!?
(Tue, 16 Jun 2009 09:17:53 GMT)
i have to do a speech on pele so here it i Pele was a very famous football/soccer player who was born on the 23rd of October 1940. Pele grew up in a very poor family in Tres Coracos, Brazil. Pele is just a nickname for Edson Arantes Do Nascimento which is why he was given this nickname since he has such a long name. Growing up his parents and friends called him ‘Dico’. He first learned the game football from his dad ‘Dondinho’ who was a centre forward until his career came to an end with a fractured leg. Pele began playing when he was a young boy for a local minor team, when he wasn’t playing he was shining shoes for pennies. He was first discovered at age 11 by one of the countries premier players, Waldemar de Brito. Waldemar took Pele to Sao Paulo and said, ‘This boy will be the greatest player in the world’. He was right! Pele had an immediate impact, in his first game he scored a goal right away at age 16! Pele went on to four world cups with his national team Brazil. Pele was an average sized man but blessed with speed, balance, excellent vision, being able to control a ball superbly, being able to shoot powerfully and accurately with either foot and head. Some wealthy European clubs offered large amounts of money to sign the young Brazilian but the government of Brazil declared him an official national treasure to prevent him being transferred out of the country. Pele said ‘My father was a footballer who once scored 5 goals in a single game all with his head, a record I was never able to beat’. Pele’s statistics are astounding scoring 1,280 goals in 1,360 games second to Arthur Friedenreich who scored 1,329 goals. Pele holds the record for hat tricks scoring 92 in his career. His statistics are even more mind blowing compared to today’s players who struggle to score 30 goals in a season. Pele played for Santos for most of his career retired and then came out of retirement to play for the New york cosmos. Pele in many ways was a complete athlete, with superb skill and agility he could dribble around defenders with ease. Many people regard pele as the best ever player to live. When pele came out of retirement to play for the New york cosmos he became the highest ever paid player but he said he did not do it for the money but to make football truly popular in the United states. Pele, whose nickname does not mean anything, became a Brazilian national hero and was also known as Perola Negra (Black Pearl). His best season was 1958, when he scored 139 times. When pele was young he played with a sock stuffed with newspaper or a coconut as a ball. It took him twelve years to save up enough money to by a real ball. When Pele was at school he was expelled in grade 4 for skipping school to play football in a nearby park. Since he was so poor the only other type of entertainment was to play street football in his neighbour hood with a coconut and bare feet. During his career many players tried to break his legs because he was so good and wanted to put him out of the competition one time during a world cup he walked off crying because he couldn’t stand it.

Resolved Question: IRS social security question?
(Sun, 10 May 2009 05:53:30 GMT)
IRS SOCIAL SECURITY QUESTIONS 1. I'm 21, self employed; my business type is a "sole proprietorship". My accountant filed me a 3 month extension so that I could have more time to get all my stuff together for my 2008 returns. Anyways, I’m going through trying to find as many expenses as possible to deduct it from my earnings so I can get whatever I have to pay in as low as possible. My accountant was telling me that the IRS social security payment is like 15.1% or something like that. I can’t quite remember. Anyways, he was saying my social security fees that I would have to pay would be 15.1% of my profit and then anything before or after the first $8000 may be another 5% or something, I didn’t really understand him as I thought I did. Does anyone know how social security is calculated in my case? 2. As for m second question, do I get the social security back when I reach retirement age or something? Right now I’m 21. 3. As for my third question…if the answer to the second question was yes, why does the IRS require that we pay in social security when all they are going to do is give it back to us at retirement. In my own personal opinion, it’s better to save it in my bank account. I’m in the State of New York if that helps. 4. My accountant told me that my car that I purchased would not be tax deductable because it wasn't primarily used for business. he said he will see what he can do to help me deduct something on it. He was saying something about milage. Again I really don't understand how this works either. How does the IRS know if I use my car is used primarily for personal or commercial use or if it is used equally, 50% personal & 50% business? I use my car to travel to banks and meet business people that have to do with my business. I don't always make deliveries with my car, but I have actually made several delivers throughout 2008. I forgot to tell my accountant that. Anyway to be able to get to deduct my car expense?

Resolved Question: so has it been proven that when crimes are committed, copycat crimes seem to happen?
(Sun, 05 Apr 2009 22:19:55 GMT)
I'm talking shootings, specificly. A week or so ago, 4 cops from Oakland, California, were shot. Three died, and one died a week later. Then friday, 3 cops were shot dead in Pittsburgh, Pa. Last week, a man killed 7, and then himself, in a retirement home. Then, friday, a man killed 13, and then himself, in an immigration center in New York. A man also killed his children and himself friday in washington state, because he was scared about his wife leaving him. We can't censor the news, but it seems like they all are copycats. Does anyone know if this is fact, or is just mainly coincidence?

Resolved Question: Hi, I recently submitted the letter below, to the New York Times, ide like your views on my comment?
(Sun, 18 Jan 2009 17:38:43 GMT)
""Dear Sir/Madam, Re- your article "Tapping into homes can be a pitfull for the elderly". The low income tax deregulated free-markets of America as well as here in the United Kingdom, are leaving behind our Senior citizens in state pensions provision and residential care. Here we have the world's most powerful and influential countries, that can spend billions of US dollars and UK pounds fighting wars, illegal or otherwise, while the Senior Citizens that helped to make both of our countries what they are today are forced to live on a below par State pension, have had to sell the home they have worked all of their lives to buy and are then forced to pay for their own residential care. As a person of non pension age, I consider both the USA, and The UK, to be wrong in this policy making, this ethos, this ideology. Why should the very generation who are old enough to have seen their parents go through the 1930's depression era, and therefore have gone through much harder times, have to sell the home they have worked hard to buy, 70 years later, to pay for their own Residential Care? Also why isn't the state pension adequate enough to keep our senior's from having to choosing between eating, and heating ? Both these answers can be found in the ethos/ideology of the self styled individualism of the right wing Republicanism that in my view has haunted most Americans since the days of the infamous Ronald Reagan, and Margaret Thatcher. Although America, has been right wing Republican since the 60's. Both our countries are right wing, Tory in the UK, and both have never believed in the role of the state, so, since the 1980's there has been this right wing consensus that has established rolling back the state income tax payers money, so people are forced to look after themselves, and then letting charity take over. This is backward thinking for our so called civilized country's to adopt. I am hoping that your new President Obama will execute some very serious changes which would help America's Seniors. There is a very wise and appropriate British quote, which says, "The hallmark of a civilized country is the way it looks after it's pensioners". In Britain alone, we have 12 million pensioners, of which 1 in 5 live in poverty on a miniscule basic state pension. Many thousands maybe millions of our pensioners are dying of starvation and/or cold during the winter months and this is primarily due to the UK's poverty line state retirement pension. So knowing that the situation for pensioners in the USA is the very same, when hearing America's sitting President George W. Bush, talk about tackling terrorism, I have to say to George Bush, that there is no worse terror in the so-called civilized Capitalist states of America, and the UK, than that of being old and forgotten in your own country. In short it is the height of hypocrisy, no matter which way it is looked at, or by whom. The very first people to be assured adequate comfort under any government of Democrats, or Republicans, should be the Senior Citizens, which means free Residential Care, and a thoroughly decent and adequate basic state/Social pension, because Seniors in both our countries have earned this right""

Resolved Question: I have a question for those who agree with illegal immigration?
(Sun, 18 Jan 2009 02:11:38 GMT)
I am of Hispanic ancestry, was born in New York, went to good school. My parents came here the right way. They went through legal processes, opened their own businesses in Westchester, and bought two houses. One in PA and another in FL, for their retirement. They've lived honorable lives, never got in trouble with the law. Our family respects the laws of this country and we believe that when entering a country we should try to ourselves as people who are respectful of to that country. I speak spanish, english, french, and italian. Immigration is great, but i can not call it immigration when individuals decide to break the law. How can we call it respectful and civilized when people decide to just "sneak in". What if I decided to sneak into a movie theater without paying. would i not be held accountable? Being part of this great country is a privilege. A privilege that many have died for. Should that sacrifice not be treated with respect? What part of ILLEGAL is being misunderstood? The only counter argument i seem to get is the settling of the new world by pilgrims and conquistadors. Do i justify their negative antediluvian actions? NO! But I also recognize the fact that the united states, its constitution and immigration laws had not been established thus it is irrelevant to compare their struggle to that of illegal aliens. So my final question is. Should the sacrifice of my parents and of all those that decide to come here the right way because they know it is the ethical way of doing so be ignored? Why waste years of paperwork, when you can smuggle your way through and find support here? How can you justify crime? After all human trafficking is a crime. Many of these illegal aliens bring with them not only drugs, guns, and gang culture...but also place a huge burden on those that came here the right way. They demand rights found in the constitution, and i ask myself. What rights? The constitution only covers citizens, legal residents, and those with visas. The audacity of these illegal aliens surprises me everyday...they ask for education, welfare benefits, licenses...What is going on? sorry for some grammar mistakes...i was typing fast.

Resolved Question: A Wally World employee was trampled to DEATH in...?
(Sat, 29 Nov 2008 20:19:35 GMT)
...somewhere in New York during the "Black Friday" Wally World super sale. Reports claim the doors were opened after being closed for several hours & a swarm of "thousands" poured through the doors. A hapless employee was knocked down then trampled on by the endless crowd of shoppers, on their way to the back of the store in a mad rush to get the limited "super buys" in the electronics area of the store. Reports stated that some people stepped over the employees body but others were not that curtious. I have heard that New Yorkers are the "coldest" people in America, like don't even say "hi" when passing strangers on the sidewalk. Here's my question... could this ONLY happen in New York? If not, what can be done by the business' that conduct such "limited time" sales, in an effort to protect their employees from these crazed assault shopper troops. We certainly do not want local government to get involved or next thing the feds will catch on to it & create another redundancy beaurocracy, costing the tax payers billions in increased taxes for more fed employees, wages, bennies, retirements, office space, janitorial, utilities, oversight, legislation & a host of other costs related to ANY new beaurocracy. Suggestions please!

Resolved Question: Do you think this is too soon?
(Tue, 18 Nov 2008 05:08:55 GMT)
PLEASE READ. My sister (17 years old) is friends with a girl who just turned 18. Anyway, that girl who is a senior in high school.. lets call her kate. Kate is planning to move from New York to Texas to live with her 21 year old boyfriend, Matt. They knew each other for 3 years, the parents don't really know him that well, but she flies back and forth to visit him every now and then. Anyway, shes already getting rid of all her stuff, selling nearly everything she has. She doesn't have a job, obviously hasn't gone to college yet and the guy is in the air force and intends on staying in the air force throughout his life. he leaves soon, i don't know when, but for 2 months and it will be that way for the rest of their life or, until he is at the age of retirement. i think this is puppy love since she fell in love with this older guy at age 15. do you think its too soon to do this? i know this girl. when i lived with my parents and sister, she was always over our house. i knew her since she was 9 years old. but now she wants to move down to Texas this summer and also intends on marrying him THIS summer. her parents don't believe she will move nor does her brother (im friends with him-hes my age), but ive spoken to her recently and shes dead serious. im not the kind of person who would talk someone out of leaving their state to be with their boyfriend so i havent said anything to her in regards to how i feel, but im worried for her. she was only in a "love" relationship with him for 3 months. before that they were just "friends". she also broke up with him twice within the 3 months and she can go without talking to him for a month or more at a time. i know this isnt love. what can i do? i love this girl. shes seriously like a little sister to me, but shes messing up her life. shes already looking for wedding dresses!

Resolved Question: Is this Tax Plan Consistent with the Goals of the Obama Tax Plan?
(Sun, 16 Nov 2008 03:54:19 GMT)
I have a modest proposal I made this morning and I am repeating it tonight. Starting with the notion popularized by President-Elect Obama in the recent campaign, I wish to propose a plan that taxes people according to the ability to pay so that we can distribute the tax money according to the need of others. The plan would work as follows: 1. Each Zip Code would be assigned a cost of living index that establishes a baseline of cost of living including median home price, insurance cost, fuel and energy costs, state income and state and local sales taxes and cost of food. For instance, New York City would have a high index for cost of living and Flint, Michigan would have a low cost of living. 2. We would establish an index by age that recognizes that a young person needs less money and will have more years of earnings ahead of him/her whereas a person approaching retirement has higher costs and less years to earn. 3. The cost of living index would be cross-referenced to age and every person would have a tax rate based on where they live and how old they are. When this is in place, we will know what people "need" and be able to determine what is excess to their need. Then we tax the excess amount at a higher tax rate. This tax would potentially include everyone including those earning more than $250,000. Isn't this the best way to disgorge excess income from people that are unfairly accumulating wealth at the expense of the poor and needy? Why should people be excused from paying a high tax on their unneeded income just because it happens to fall below $250,000. If you think it is not fair tax people on their excess, unneeded income, do you feel the same way about Obama's tax plan which does the same thing in a less precise and efficient manner? I realize there may be better tax plans such as the flat tax or the VAT tax, but what I am aking here is why shouldn't we tax everyone who by reason of wealth, age or cost of living per region really does have extra money like those who earn $250,000. Pfo, I said very clearly that I don't like the kind of taxes that are based on the idea that people "can afford it", but that is the basis for Obama's plan so why not make it more effective, far reaching and effcient? Pfo, it might turn them off because they would have to worry that the goverment might consider them to have "more money than they need. The main virtue of Obama's plan is that it taxes only 5% of Americans so that the other 95% won't think too hard about it. But since such plans have a way of working themselves down to lower brackets, I am proposing to jump to the future plan right off the bat so that people can put their money (and their trust in government to be fair in deciding who has extra money) where their mouths are.

Resolved Question: What do you think of this Tax Plan?
(Sat, 15 Nov 2008 16:50:38 GMT)
I have a modest proposal. Starting with the notion popularized by President-Elect Obama in the recent campaign, I wish to propose a plan that taxes people according to the ability to pay so that we can distribute the tax money according to need. Why should people be excused from paying a high tax on their unneeded income just because it happens to fall below $250,000. If you think it is not fair tax people on their excess, unneeded income, do you feel the same way about Obama's tax plan which does the same thing in a less precise and efficient manner? I will ask this again tonight for those who miss out. I don't like taxing people based on their ability to pay, but if we're going to do it shouldn't everyone with "excess" income share in the patriotic and humanist join of funding programs to fund the needs of their lower performing brethren? Daddio, Isn't that what we are doing by taxing people who earn more than $250,000? Im a PC, the government already confiscates wealth in this manner through its progressive taxation system. Some people pay a higher rate because they have more money under the assumption that they don't really need it and can afford to pay more. Stew, we could do a child credit that is based on the index and the age of the child. Isn't this fun? JP, isn't this just the same as what Obama's proposing but just applying it more effectively. If we're not taxing people who earn more than $250,000 just because we can, then why are we doing it? It's that Guy, there are a number of false assumptions in your argument. First less than 15% of people earning more than $250,000 per year are primarily beneficiaries of inherited wealth. Se con, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the growth in income amonthe top 5% of wage earners has been approximately 6.5% per year since 2000 -- a good bit more than the working stiffs but not doubling ever few years as you contend. Finally, when you engage in tax people at a higher rates on the basis of the ability to pay, you open the door to all kinds of thinking that will eventually reach downward to the little guy. The top 5% wage earners would like to save money and may have expensive houses, etc just like the lesser earners that you express concern for. Buck Ofama, I am sure they are fairer, more pro-growth ways of taxing people. My goal here was to make Obama's plan more pure and efficient. I think by taxing the "OTHER" among us, it allows us to turn off our brains and be grateful it is not us. The logical implications of the Obama tax lead us to this plan. It is only because it is easier to throw 5% of us to the lions as a crowd pleasing measure than to propose a lottery where each us might be tossed into the coloseum for the entertainment and profit of the rest. Witchy, I think the government could issue poverty cards and government issued, recyclable collection bags (the size and number of which would be means tested) to take to the homes of the recently deceased affluent to ensure that they only take their "FAIR" share. You make a good point. Proud, while I see your point that the rich are able to avoid taxes like Obama supporter Warren Buffet who pays nothing at all above social security and medicare, I think it is even a stronger argument why we need this plan to get the dollars our new President will need to implement his far-reaching and virtuous plan for making life easier for those who have struggled to develop a strategy for getting ahead in a society that seems to only offer opportunity to the endless, hard-working immigrants who come here with nothing but broken English and a work ethic. Proud, one more thought. The Internal Revenue Service is projected a significant reduction in income for the top 5% due to the faltering stock market, bond defaults, the collapse of the real es

Resolved Question: Funding for "Investment Property" which will eventually be our retirement home? Any help?
(Fri, 24 Oct 2008 21:18:27 GMT)
Here's the situation: My husband and I currently have a primary residence in North Dakota which we have a mortgage on (monthly payment is $823). We plan to retire in 15 years. For the past year we have been looking at property for sale with or without a residence on it to have set up as our primary residence in retirement. This last week we found it. Its perfect, everything we want for our family, upstate New York, 5 acres, stream, surrounded by apple & peach orchards, 1/4 from Lake Ontario, across the street from a state park, 15 minutes from Amish Country, huge barn, etc. Currently there are renters in the property and it is For Sale By Owner. The property is selling for $155k and the current owners bought it for $145k 3 years ago. We believe it is reasonably priced. Our credit score is between 760-770 and have a low debt ratio (no car payments, no credit debt, one small 3 year loan under 7k that we got for our parents to consolidate their loans and they pay on time.) I think we have formed a good repore with the sellers. This is their second home as well, they live out of state. I have talked to a handful of banks and we are definitely preapproved. The down fall is that they are considering this an investment property because there are currently renters in the home whom we have agreed that they will stay for no longer than a year, then becoming our vacation home until we can retire there. Is there anyway around this "investment" classification that the lenders are calling it. For 14 out of the 15 years it will be a vacation home until we can make it our primary residence. With the lenders classification the lending falls under more strict rules. For example we will have to have 20% down, plus closing costs, totaling about 42k due at closing. That's a lot of money! But we want to get in now because I know as we speak mortgage lending practices are tightening and new rules are being put into place. With this and inflation we want to get in now before it will cost us even more money. Our plan would be to have it paid off by the time we retire. Please anyone with any ideas/advice would be helpful. We are open to non-traditional ideas like "assuming a loan" or the like. Here is what we have been given by the banks thus far: 30 year fixed pay 2 points 6.625 interest rate 20 % down Payment around $1070 a month Thanks in advance. I would like to add a few more details and thank you to all who have helped in answering my question thus far. The current owners own the house in full, so there is no mortgage. Also, I know they want to sell this house so they can use the money from equity for their new house. We haven't put in an offer yet but they have already told us they are firm on the price, 155k and that they have already reduced it by 15k. I do believe it is a great deal at 155k. Hope these minor details help. Keep coming with the good advice.

Resolved Question: I don't know what Obama is saying when he says he was against the war to begin with?
(Mon, 21 Apr 2008 03:19:09 GMT)
Everyone was for the war when we witnessed ground zero, we all wanted retribution for what happened to us in New York. It wasn't until Bush turned the war towards the Iraqi's that we all stood back and asked ourselves, why did this President take his eye off of the terrorist who killed the innocent people in the twin towers, to go after a state that was rich in oil and low on terrorist? He lied to us and told us that Sadaam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, and that he was finacing the war on terror against the United States, that has been proven false, and the man who kept a violatol state in check was killed for the wrong reason. Now, what are we doing continuing the war on Iraq? My guess is that we are trying to give G. W. Bush a wonderful retirement home, other than that I can't figure. So, what exactly is Obama running his campaign on as far as the war goes. Is he saying he was smarter than all of us, did he vote against the war, or the war after?

Resolved Question: why Barack Hussein Obama did not denounce his 20-years pastor Wright for anti-American racist rants? Why?
(Mon, 17 Mar 2008 11:51:16 GMT)
Is it dangerous that Obama didn't openly denounce racist Wright sermons or leave that radical church? please read this ABC NEWS report... Obama's Pastor: God Damn America, U.S. to Blame for 9/11 Obama's Pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Has a History of What Even Obama's Campaign Aides Say Is 'Inflammatory Rhetoric' By BRIAN ROSS and REHAB EL-BURI March 13, 2008— Sen. Barack Obama's pastor says blacks should not sing "God Bless America" but "God damn America." The Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama's pastor for the last 20 years at the Trinity United Church of Christ on Chicago's south side, has a long history of what even Obama's campaign aides concede is "inflammatory rhetoric," including the assertion that the United States brought on the 9/11 attacks with its own "terrorism." In a campaign appearance earlier this month, Sen. Obama said, "I don't think my church is actually particularly controversial." He said Rev. Wright "is like an old uncle who says things I don't always agree with," telling a Jewish group that everyone has someone like that in their family. Rev. Wright married Obama and his wife Michelle, baptized their two daughters and is credited by Obama for the title of his book, "The Audacity of Hope." An ABC News review of dozens of Rev. Wright's sermons, offered for sale by the church, found repeated denunciations of the U.S. based on what he described as his reading of the Gospels and the treatment of black Americans. "The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing 'God Bless America.' No, no, no, God damn America, that's in the Bible for killing innocent people," he said in a 2003 sermon. "God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human. God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme." In addition to damning America, he told his congregation on the Sunday after Sept. 11, 2001 that the United States had brought on al Qaeda's attacks because of its own terrorism. "We bombed Hiroshima, we bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon, and we never batted an eye," Rev. Wright said in a sermon on Sept. 16, 2001. "We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back to our own front yards. America's chickens are coming home to roost," he told his congregation. Sen. Obama told the New York Times he was not at the church on the day of Rev. Wright's 9/11 sermon. "The violence of 9/11 was inexcusable and without justification," Obama said in a recent interview. "It sounds like he was trying to be provocative," Obama told the paper. Rev. Wright, who announced his retirement last month, has built a large and loyal following at his church with his mesmerizing sermons, mixing traditional spiritual content and his views on contemporary issues. "I wouldn't call it radical. I call it being black in America," said one congregation member outside the church last Sunday. "He has impacted the life of Barack Obama so much so that he wants to portray that feeling he got from Rev. Wright onto the country because we all need something positive," said another member of the congregation. Rev. Wright, who declined to be interviewed by ABC News, is considered one of the country's 10 most influential black pastors, according to members of the Obama campaign. Obama has praised at least one aspect of Rev. Wright's approach, referring to his "social gospel" and his focus on Africa, "and I agree with him on that." Sen. Obama declined to comment on Rev. Wright's denunciations of the United States, but a campaign religious adviser, Shaun Casey, appearing on "Good Morning America" Thursday, said Obama "had repudiated" those comments. In a statement to ABCNews.com, Obama's press spokesman Bill Burton said, "Sen. Obama has said repeatedly that personal attacks such as this have no place in this campaign or our politics, whether they're offered from a platform at a rally or the pulpit of a church. Sen. Obama does not think of the pastor of his church in political terms. Like a member of his family, there are things he says with which Sen. Obama deeply disagrees. But now that he is retired, that doesn't detract from Sen. Obama's affection for Rev. Wright or his appreciation for the good works he has done." Click Here for the Investigative Homepage. Wright or his appreciation for the good works he has done."

Resolved Question: I want to legaly transport bodies in funeral processions in New York State?
(Thu, 06 Mar 2008 20:30:47 GMT)
I have come up with a business idea (to supplement my retirement) that in todays society I'm sure will be quite popular, and a lucrative venture for myself and my partner(s). This idea involves a certain type of vehicle, operated by myself or other individuals, which will be used to transport the deceased from funeral parlors to churches and finally to their resting place. I need to know whether I can do it independantly, or must I do it under the direction of a funeral "director". Also, what insurance liabilities might I encounter? Thank You! Frank

Resolved Question: I recieved this in an e-mail and was wondering if it is true.?
(Tue, 26 Feb 2008 01:40:00 GMT)
If Hillary Clinton wins in 2008 And Bill Clinton is 'appointed' to fill her Senate Seat And Either live to retire 'they' (together or alone) Would get.... Two US Presidential retirement checks, Two US Senate retirement Checks, And A retirement check from the State of Arkansas . About the only thing they MIGHT NOT get is... A Social Security Check.... But I wouldn't bet on it.... I understand ole Bill has earned $40,000,000 in the past six years. What a guy! AND THE REST OF THE STORY... Hilarious Rotten Clinton , As a New York State Senator, Now comes under the 'Congressional Retirement and Staffing Plan,' Which means that even if she never gets re-elected, She STILL receives her Congressional salary until she dies. (Would it not be nice if all Americans Were pension eligible after only 4 years?) If Bill outlives her, He then inherits HER salary until HE dies. He is already getting his Presidential salary until he dies. If Hillary outlives Bill, She also gets HIS salary until she dies. Guess who pays for that? It's common knowledge that in order for her To establish NY residency, They purchased a million dollar-plus house In upscale Chappaqua , New York . Makes sense! They are entitled to Secret Service protection for life. Still makes sense. Here is where it becomes interesting. Their mortgage payments hover at around $10,000 per month. BUT, an extra residence 'had' to be built Within the acreage to house The Secret Service agents. The Clinton 's charge The Federal government $10,000 monthly rent For the use of that extra residence, Which is about equal to their mortgage payment. This means that we, The taxpayers, Are paying the Clinton 's Salary, Mortgage, Transportation, Safety and security, As well as the salaries For their 12 man staff -- and, This is all perfectly legal! I said I was wondering if it was true.

Resolved Question: Mathematics As A Profession?
(Sun, 27 Jan 2008 20:11:34 GMT)
Dear Math Teachers: I was born in the Dominican Republic but raised in New York City. I want to share my story and passion with you which includes mathematics. I attended several CUNY colleges in the NYC area and earned two degrees: (1) A.A. in Liberal Arts and B.A. in Sociology. However, my true and only passion has been the world of numbers. I love algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus very much. So, what is the problem? I want to return to school. The practical avenue for me to travel would be to enroll in graduate school in the field of sociology. It makes sense since I already have a B.A. in the field. However, I do not like sociology as much as I love math. I can probably graduate with a M.A. in sociology in about 3 years (as a part-time student). However, if I choose to study mathematics, it would take me much longer to reach my goal since I do NOT have a degree in math. So, why a math degree? I want to teach math at the college level OUTSIDE the NYC area. All NYC professors, to my understanding, must have a doctorate degree in their field of expertise in order to gain full-time professor status. I know there are states in America that would welcome me as a college professor of mathematics without having a doctorate degree but where? Where are we going with this e-mail? I am 42 years old. I work two dead-end, part-time jobs with no benefits, no dental/medical, no 401k plan, no vacation, no retirement plan of any kind, etc. I am TIRED of struggling. I am a man with a vision. I know that God has blessed me with the ability to comprehend math beyond the average student. In fact, I volunteer my time as an online high school math tutor. I help students across the USA through various math forums. I receive letters from students thanking me for explaining math at their level. I feel a RUSH inside whenever I sit in front of my computer to answer math questions and helping students via a large variety of math forums. I don't know what to do. I am 42 years old and extremely tired of struggling in two dead-end jobs. What do I do for a living? I work as a substitute teacher (more like baby-sitting) for grades 6-12. The sub teacher job sucks BIG TIME because of the reasons mentioned above and also because it is per diem. In addition, sub teachers do NOT have the summer off with pay like regular teachers. So, summer time is very stressfull for sub teachers in terms of paying the rent on time, living a comfortable life, etc. My second job is a weekend job. I work as a security guard on SAT/SUN from 12am to 8am at $11.50 per hour for 16 hours. The guard job is supplemental income and nothing more. Do you see my point? I graduate from NYC Technical College in 1990, from Lehman College in 1994 BUT have been struggling ever since leaving the campus life. I can't continue to live this way. What advice can you give to me? I am desperately searching for someone who'll guide my feet in the right direction? Should I take the more practical road of earning an M.A. in Sociology since I have a B.A. in the field OR should return to the undergraduate level of study to earn a B.A. in Mathematics? What do you say? Before replying, keep in mind that I sincerely have a passion for math and NOT for sociology. I will wait for your reply. Thank you so much for taking time out to read my note. Sincerely, mathland

Resolved Question: Too much money for politicians? They say they are for the poor?
(Tue, 15 Jan 2008 19:27:59 GMT)
If Hillary wins in 2008 and Bill is 'appointed' to fill her Senate seat and either live to retire 'they' (together or alone) would get two US Presidential retirement checks, two US Senate retirement checks, and a retirement check from the State of Arkansas. Bill has earned $40,000,000 in the past six years. Hillary Clinton , as a New York State Senator, now comes under the 'Congressional Retirement and Staffing Plan,' which means that even if she never gets reelected, she STILL receives her Congressional salary until she dies. If Bill outlives her, he then inherits HER salary until HE dies. He is already getting his Presidential salary until he dies. If Hillary outlives Bill, she also gets HIS salary until she dies. They purchased a million dollar-plus house in New York . Their mortgage payments hover at around $10,000 per month. we, the taxpayers, are paying the Clinton's salary, mortgage, transportation, safety and security, as well as the salaries for for their staff.

Resolved Question: Do you know how much Bill, and Hill Clinton will make off of the American taxpayers, when they retire?

What shall America do about it? If Hillary wins in 2008 and Bill is 'appointed' to fill her Senate seat and either live to retire 'they' (together or alone) would get two US Presidential retirement checks, two US Senate retirement checks, and a retirement check from the State of Arkansas . About the only thing they MIGHT NOT get is a Social Security check....but I wouldn't bet on it....I understand ole Bill has earned $40,000,000 in the past six years. What a guy! Resolved Question: Controversial DNA scientist retires? Racist or merely stating fact?
(Thu, 25 Oct 2007 17:10:24 GMT)
NEW YORK - James Watson, famous for DNA research but widely condemned for recent comments about intelligence levels among blacks, retired Thursday from his post at a prestigious research institution. Watson, 79, and the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York announced his departure a week after the lab suspended him. He was chancellor of the institution, and his retirement took effect immediately. Watson shared a Nobel Prize with Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins in 1962 for co-discovering the structure of the DNA molecule. He is one of America's most prominent scientists. In his statement Thursday, Watson said that because of his age, his retirement was "more than overdue. The circumstances in which this transfer is occurring, however, are not those which I could ever have anticipated or desired." http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071025/ap_on_sc/controversial_scientist

Resolved Question: I'm 20 years old and looking into retirement?
(Tue, 22 May 2007 22:37:14 GMT)
I'm 20 years old and currently an undergraduate in New York State. I know that if I can open an IRA at an early age it will accumulate so I'll be set in my later years. However, I don't know much about personal finance and have no idea where to start. I have about $7,500 in my savings account but I know I'll be paying student loans for a while (planning on going to grad school for 3 more years after the initial 4 = 7 total). My parents are helping pay for a good amount of my undergraduate tuition but I know grad school will hit me hard. Any tips of where I can start would be greatly appreciated!

Resolved Question: When she runs for President, will you vote for her?
(Tue, 13 Mar 2007 21:12:37 GMT)
Hillary Rodham Clinton, as a New York State Senator, now comes under the "Congressional Retirement and Staffing Plan," which means that even if she never gets reelected, she STILL receives her Congressional salary until she dies. WE DO! It's common knowledge that in order for her to establish NY residency, they purchased a million dollar-plus house in upscale Chappaqua, New York. Makes sense. They are entitled to Secret Service protection for life. Still makes sense. Here is where it becomes interesting. Their mortgage payments hover at around $10,000 per month. BUT, an extra residence HAD to be built within the acreage to house the Secret Service agents. The Clintons charge the Federal government $10,000 monthly rent for the use of that extra residence, which is just about equal to their mortgage payment. This means that we, the taxpayers, are paying the Clinton's salary, mortgage, transportation, safety and security, as well as the salaries for their 12 man staff -- and, this is all perfectly legal!

Resolved Question: Hillary Clinton ... What do you think of this?
(Mon, 19 Feb 2007 08:34:00 GMT)
"The definition of Rotten" You really should be sitting down when you read this one Gold Star Mothers (G.S.M .)is an organization made up of women whose sons were killed in military combat during service in the United States Armed Forces. Recently a delegation of New York State Gold Star Mothers made a trip to Washington D.C. , to discuss various concerns with their elected Representatives. According to published reports, there was only one politician who refused to meet with these ladies. Can you guess which politician that might be? Was it New York Senator Charles Schumer? Nope, he met with them. Try again. Do you know anyone serving in the Senate who has never showed anything but contempt for our military? Do you happen to know the name of any politician in Washington who's husband once wrote of his loathing for the military? Now you're getting warm! You got it! None other than the Queen herself, Hillary Rotten Clinton! She refused repeated requests to meet with the Gold Star Mothers. Now, please don't tell me you're Surprised. This woman wants to be President of the United States - - - and - - - there is a huge percentage of Voters who are eager to help her achieve that goal. - - - - <*> - - - - Think about this one !!! Don't forget, our girl, Hillary Rodham Clinton, as a New York Senator, now comes under this fancy congressional Retirement and Staffing Plan. It's common knowledge that, in order for her to establish NYS residency, the Clinton's purchased a million+ dollar house in upscale Chappaqua, NY Makes sense.
