Open Question: Would Americans be better off if the government left us to look after ourselves?
(Thu, 11 Mar 2010 10:48:09 GMT)
I don't want the public school system-I can provide for my kids education just fine. I don't want social security-I can save for my own retirement thank you. I don't need Obamacare-I can get excellent care in the free market. In fact if the government would stop "providing" for Americans, two amazing things would happen. 1) Our hellish debt could immediately be brought under control 2) The economy and job creation would immediately rev up. How? The government would no longer have any excuse to seize 1/2 of everything I have to waste on mismanaged programs that are bankrupting our nation. I could provide for myself and keep my pay to spend as I chose

Open Question: comming out of retirement. i dont think floyd mayweather is afraid of pacquiao?
(Thu, 11 Mar 2010 09:06:08 GMT)
on the height of the pound for pound king, pacquiaos reign of supreme dominance. fLyod suddenly comes back to the scene. knowing poeple would have this curiousity for a mega fight between him and the man kicking everyones @SS. i really think that floyd is playing a game, to hype and build such a huge suspense and demand for a mega showdown with pacquiao. i think pacquaio will take of clottey in the 9th or 10th round. and i think flyod will edge mosley. setting up pound 4 pound king fight.. i think that was mayweathers plan all along. cause why else would flyod come back in a time when all eyes is on pacquiao? i dont think he did it to take all this BS and criticism from everybody.. it just dont make sence for him to ruin his rep. by comming back intending to avoid the man at the throne.

Open Question: WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR RETIREMENT BENEFITS? Pension under the Employment Retirement Income Security Act of 1974?
(Thu, 11 Mar 2010 09:03:31 GMT)
My father, 51, had been an hourly worker in a machine shop of for 21 years and four months. On a Christmas holiday, he suffered a severe heart attack and was hospitalized for three weeks. At his release, his doctor said he was to rest at home for a couple of months. After his recuperation period, his doctor, along with his company’s physicians, was to decide whether or not my father should retired for disability reasons. They never got the opportunity to make this decision; in February, my father died of a second heart attack. He left my mother, four sons, two daughters and two-daughters in-law. His wife, my mother, still had four children at home. As part of my father's estate, my mother received the normal group insurance payments, the balance of his savings plan account, and the other benefits due her. However, my mother did not receive a pension from the company as a survivor of an eligible employee. When my mother and the company representatives had discussed the settlement, my mother had inquired about my father's pension and about my mother's right to receive it. The human resource department had stated that since contributions to this fund were made only by the company, no survivor’s benefits were provided. 1.What do you think my mother should do at this point? 2.What does the Employment Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 have to say about this issue?

Open Question: At any point, are you forced to go into retirement?
(Thu, 11 Mar 2010 05:39:21 GMT)
In the high school I go to, there's a really old man who works as one of the maintanence crew. He's 64years old and still is working. I asked him about retiring but he says he loves to work. His age doesn't affect his job though, he's always hyper so he never falls asleep on the job and he does not use a cane or any kind of support. Could they force him, or anyone to retire?

Open Question: Help with finance homework PLEASE?
(Thu, 11 Mar 2010 01:29:50 GMT)
HW #4 1)You are offered the opportunity to put some money away for retirement. You will receive five annual payments of $25,000. How much would you be willing to invest today if you desire an interest rate of 12%? 2)You are prepared to make monthly payment of $225, beginning at the end of this month, into an account that pays 9 percent interest compounded monthly. What is the effective annual interest rate? How many payments will you have made when your account balance reaches $20,000? 3)You have recently finished your MBA at the Iona College. Naturally, you are going to purchase a new BMW. The car costs about $30,000. The bank quotes an interest rate of 15 percent APR for a 72-month loan with a 10 percent down payment. What will your monthly payment be? What will the loan balance be when you sell the car two years later from now?

Open Question: Conservatives and liberals, republicans and democrats...?
(Thu, 11 Mar 2010 01:02:19 GMT)
we know the system is rigged against us. The top tier earners, who own both political parties, are laughing all the way to the bank while we battle it out here on YA and call each other names. So my question is... when do we take our country back? When does the bleeding of jobs, homes, retirement accounts, etc stop? Or do we let them have their way and their cake and we end up like Rome? And no.. it's not the goverment, although that can use a disinfectant as well. Trickle down never amounted to a piddle and those that pushed and stuck up for it should be ashamed.

Open Question: Am I the only person that would like to see more College Basketball questions in this section?
(Wed, 10 Mar 2010 23:54:12 GMT)
I love College Basketball and it's my favorite I was a much bigger NBA fan until Michael Jordan's retirement and find College Basketball 10x better now everybody has their own opinions on which is better but what I'm saying is... there's almost no posts on College Basketball, and it's tough to even get 4 answers when you ask a College Basketball question. There are more NCAA questions during the tournament and alot of NCAA users which is great though Am I the only person that would like to see more College Basketball questions in this section? BQ- Aside from not having College BBall the NBA discussions in here are horrible. There's a bunch of uneducated questions and answers and childishness on here. It's hard to have quality talks about the NBA except for certain good contributers. What has happened to good discussions about basketball here?

Open Question: How much should we increase taxes and fees to pay for retirees?
(Wed, 10 Mar 2010 23:36:39 GMT)
Cities are broke because of the Bush economy. Once again citizens are making bad choices by not investing in their future. The bad news is that many of them are selling buildings (Cincinatti wants to sell City Hall), cut salaries of government workers, or reduce other higher-paid retirement funds. The good news is that many cities are devising property tax increases, sales tax increases, and new utility bill fees. What other mechanisms will make this possible for governments to keep operating? But the people (thats you) are the government. So you are responsible for this mess.

Open Question: How should I finish my short story?
(Wed, 10 Mar 2010 23:31:33 GMT)
I am writing a short story for school. It is suposed to have a strong emphasis on theme. I started writing one. It is 300 words now and needs to be 1000. Any ideas on how to finish? Jeff Hayes never thought it would come to this. That he would be on the outside looking in, or the inside looking out, however you want to think about it. For the past year he was always a couple steps ahead of everyone else, until they finally caught up to him. It started off small, but Jeff just couldn’t help himself. *** one year ago *** Jeff was worried, what was he going to do about his retirement? He was all set to receive a hefty pension in three years, after all he was the chief of police. When he was informed of the financial cutbacks, Jeff was devastated. He had no investments, and only enough savings for a couple of years. He was only 58 years old, he thought he still had some good years left before he would sit and do nothing. He needed to think of something, and fast. After weeks of brainstorming and coming no closer to an answer, it hit him when he least expected it. He was about to take down one of the city’s larger drug importers, he just needed some extra evidence. Jeff was shocked when the man, Jermaine Taylor, called him off the record. For some reason, maybe fate, Jeff decided to answer, and his life was never the same. “Listen Hayes, I think we can both help each other out here,” said Taylor. “What do you mean?” Jeff replied. “What I mean is that I know about the pension, and you know about my business dealings. How about we help each other make that go away. I’ll give you $20,000 right now to back off,” answered Taylor. “OK,” said Jeff.

Open Question: What do you think of this story...?
(Wed, 10 Mar 2010 15:17:01 GMT)
This came from The Motley Fool (AN INVESTING INFORMATION SITE): http://www.fool.com/ : Do you know Jack? Our quick-but-powerful story starts with two twins: Jack and Jill. As they turn 18, Jack takes a job out of high school and begins investing. From age 18 to 30 -- when he gets married and has his first kid -- Jack socks away five grand a year. Then he stops. Jill, meanwhile, goes to college and then medical school. She starts saving at 30 -- the same $5,000 per year. Both invest in the stock market, earning a long-term average of 11% a year. But by age 65, the difference in their financial fortunes will shock you: Jill, who contributed for 35 years straight, will have $1.9 million. But Jack, who invested for only 12 years, actually has $4.9 million ... thanks to his head start! Could you use $4.9 million for your retirement? Isn't that amazing???

Open Question: debt relief order I have been advised to apply for a debt relief order and wondered if anyone had any advice?
(Wed, 10 Mar 2010 13:58:56 GMT)
I have about £13000 debts and have been paying a certain amount off each month via CCCS. However due to health implications, I have asked for voluntary redundancy although I am at retirement age I was not due to retire until December. I have been advised by CCCS that I should apply for a debt relief order to deal with my debts rather than go bankrupt, after they had worked out my income I would just have a state pension with pension creidt. I am a council tenant so would get help with rent and council tax. However if I got the redundancy payment I would like to pay back my son in law who has lent me money over the last ten years or so who is now himself in financial difficulty. This would probably leave me with about £2000 - would this affect the debt relief order or would they expect me to pay part of my debts with the redundancy payment.

Open Question: Suppose I punch out my soon to be ex-boss.?
(Wed, 10 Mar 2010 13:07:40 GMT)
Here's my story, sorry if it's a bit lengthy. At the tragic expense of my grandfather's sudden and early death, I've recived my multi-million dollar inheritence earlier than anticipated. He was an executive for Warren Buffets Berkshire Hathaway and bought up several hundred shares of stock while they were dirt cheap. My current financial situation is this: A 41 year annuity of $207'000.00 a year (Actually direct deposits monthly.) Also a secluded cabin in the Hawaiian islands as my permanent residence, and 1.5 Million remaining in uncommited dollars spread out in three bank accounts, that will be my retirement when my annuity runs out at the age of 61. As you can see, I'm a 20 years man and set for life. Further more, and you can correct me if I'm wrong about this, that's why I'm here asking, but it would seem that I have nothing to lose when I go in for my final check. You see, a week from this friday, I go in for my final check. I am assistant manager at a golf course and absolutly despise the boss. She has made the last year of my life miserable, and instead of going out with a handshake, I'm thinking of going out with a literal bang. Because, I live in Pensacola county Florida, and my flight to my new life in Hawaii is 11am a week from friday in Tampa. So, two hours before the flight, I get there at opening at 9am, noone else is there, I get my check, rough her up a bit then high tail it out of there. This is my opinion: Even though Tampa, the location of an airport is a neighboring county, the process of extradition remains nonetheless. So, even if she can tell the police I'm there (Which I do not believe she would know), there would be way too much legistical stuff to be able to get me before the flight takes off. (Even if they did, i could pay my bail, then leave, and consider it worth it.) As single mom collecting child support, we can rule out her suing. She would not only have travel expense that she likely cannot afford, but there's absolutly no way on earth she can afford an attorney who can take on the one I hire. Not to sound like I'm gloating, but I can afford any attorney on earth, she cannot. Expect her to not even consider civil action. I don't like her attitude, but she's not downright stupid. Last but not least, this IS a repost. I'm asking again because last time everyone was talking about extradition. Consider it this way: The DA is going to pay out of his budget, provided by taxpayers, to have me extradited all the way back from Hawaii over a simple assualt charge. He's gonna cover the expense of my arrest in Hawaii, and pay to put me on a plane, and fly me halfway across the pacific just to get to the west coast, than transfer planes on or two times back to tampa? Simple assault charge? I think we can rule out extradition of that distance for 90 % of all crimes. So, am I foolproof. Pea pod: I have to be tried in the county in which the crime was committed. Perhaps your not a US resident, but here that's the way it works regardless of what country's "soil" I'm on.

Resolved Question: Please share your thoughts on this quote from George Carlin?
(Wed, 10 Mar 2010 12:52:01 GMT)
“The most unfair thing about life is the way it ends. I mean, life is tough. It takes up a lot of your time. What do you get at the end of it? A Death! What's that, a bonus? I think the life cycle is all backwards. You should die first, get it out of the way. Then you live in an old age home. You get kicked out when you're too young, you get a gold watch, you go to work. You work forty years until you're young enough to enjoy your retirement. You do drugs, alcohol, you party, you get ready for high school. You go to grade school, you become a kid, you play, you have no responsibilities, you become a little baby, you go back into the womb, you spend your last nine months floating... ...and you finish off as an orgasm.” Thank You, AJ

Open Question: Wrestlemania26 Undertaker Vs Shawn Michaels II - Winner?
(Wed, 10 Mar 2010 10:21:42 GMT)
i see undertaker beating HBK at Wrestlemania My reason is simple and logical To get a wrestler to work 17 editions of Wrestlemania without a defeat is unbelievable Undertaker's streak is far more important and nostalgic than HBK's career.. Its not as if I dont like HBK..i do and he has an excellent career But if he loses and has to end his 'career', I think there is always a way to get back to the WWE I mean, there can always be an angle for his return one day.. Its not that hard to comeback I myself can think of one now..its near SummerSlam and Vince is feuding with Triple H Vince has put Triple H against almost everyone from Raw and Smackdown and Triple H has battered them all Until Vince sets up a match for Triple H against a mystery opponent at Summerslam Come Summerslam, Triple H waiting in the ring..and his opponent.......HBK HBK comes back as a heel, selling his soul to Vince the devil to comeback from forced retirement.. See what I mean..it would be easier for HBK to comeback from retirement than to erase a dent in the Undertaker's streak It will be mean nothing if the streak read 17-1..it can never be erased Taker's streak should remain forever until his retirement So it's an Undertaker win for me..18-0

Open Question: Personal Finance, Life Insurance Planning?
(Wed, 10 Mar 2010 07:23:42 GMT)
Kyle and Laura have been married for 3 years. They recently bought a home costing $212,000 using a $190,000 mortgage. They have no other debts. Kyle earns $42,000 per year and Laura $41,000. Each has a retirement plan valued at approximately $10,000. They recently received a mail offer from their mortgage lender for a mortgage life insurance policy of $190,000. Their only life insurance currently is a $20,000 cash-value survivorship joint life policy. They each would like to provide the other with support for 5 years if one of them should die. Assuming $10,000 in final expenses, calculate the amount of life insurance they need using the needs-based approach. Assume a 4% interest rate.

What kind of education should I have before even trying to audition? How often do positions open up? Is there a retirement and health-care provided? Any other information would be appreciated. Also, I was wondering if the USAF Academy had a program involving music.

Open Question: Who else will see her off?
(Wed, 10 Mar 2010 01:56:40 GMT)
I am not to proud to admit that September 16th will be a very sad day. We will finally see Discovery lift off for not only her final voyage, but the shuttle fleets final voyage. But you know what I am not looking forward to even less than this, July 29th. Why? because its the last time the baby, the little one Space Shuttle Endeavour takes her final journey which will be heart breaking. I remember May 1992 when she made her first flight, although sad as she replaced Princess Challenger (may they RIP) she instantly become may favorite to watch, and every time she went up i remember saying and still do to myself "Challenger this is for you" So although it is one from last, and I think it is only right that Discovery make the last journey. I can honestly say Endeavour, it may be early but God speed, and once landed know you have earned your retirement. Does anyone else have a story, or opinion to share regarding watching their first shuttle launch? will you miss the days of watching your favorite shuttle take flight? Do you think they will ever be brought back out of retirement? - My dream. To one day stand enough to Endeavour and have a photo taken next to her.

Open Question: How long do I have to keep the negatives of past clients?
(Wed, 10 Mar 2010 01:54:32 GMT)
I retired several years ago from wedding and portrait photography. I have tried to reach some of my clients but it is very time consuming. I am willing to send them what I have on file, but most people have moved or are divorced. I was told by another photographer that if I post and ad in the local newspaper announcing my retirement and telling people that they can have their negatives for free if they contact me is all I have to do. After the set time alloted I can then destroy the negatives. That sounds a little harsh to me but I need to clear out the files in storage. Any suggestions?

Open Question: I'm an up and coming artist. Where around town could I preform?
(Wed, 10 Mar 2010 00:39:33 GMT)
I'm well known around my town, I sing, play guitar, and I'm learning how to play piano. Ever since 5th grade I've wanted to preform in front of a crowd and headline my own tour. I know that I have the abilities to get a record deal, but I just need to get known for my musical talents. So, now that you know a little bit about my passion, I have NO idea where I could preform for a crowd. I know that I could preform at coffee shops, retirement homes, and at my school talent show, but I want something bigger. I'm not talking about like opening up for Boys Like Girls, but like holding a mini-concert of a few of my original songs and some covers. Any help would be greatly appreciated! -Robert

Open Question: saving for retirement?
(Tue, 09 Mar 2010 22:54:25 GMT)
If I am saving for retirement and I started by saving $2500/year and I plan to increase my contributions by 3% per year. If the retirement plan has historically made 8% per year, how much will I have in my account after 38 years? Also how much will be in my retirement fund if it pays only 6.5% per year?

Open Question: question re lake water storage?
(Tue, 09 Mar 2010 22:38:50 GMT)
i live in a retirement village in australia we have a lake in the village which has a spillway wall for overflow,we have 3 inlet pipes feeding stormwater etc into the lake each pipe is approx 16 inches ( 400 mm) to 24 inches ( 600 mm ) in diameter,at present the water level is at the bottom of each pipe,if the spillway wall was raised by 600 mm this would put 600 mm of water next time it rained, the question is next time it rained would water still drain satisfactorily into the lake even though each pipe was filled with 600 mm of water thank you

Resolved Question: When Is Obama Going To Admit That Social Security and Medicare Are Colossal Government Failures?
(Tue, 09 Mar 2010 22:36:57 GMT)
No program in history has made more people poor than the Ponzi scheme that is Social Security Retirement Income. If seniors gave me their FICA taxes over 45 years, they'd retire with a 2000% rate of return, as opposed to a negative real return. Here's a math lesson for Liberals: 1 + 1 = 2.

Open Question: Tax Refunds being held because of husband's old debt?
(Tue, 09 Mar 2010 20:00:21 GMT)
Last year we didn't get over half our federal refund back because of a 2005 tax return. I was unable to get any info as to why because I wasn't married to my husband then. He said he called and it was because he had to take some retirement out that year and they must of not taxed enough. Well this year, we didn't get our state back. They told me that it was because of an adjusted gross on the federal return during 2005 and it didn't match up with the state. According to the state it had nothing to do with retirement. My husband claims it does and I just don't understand. If he filed jointly with his ex that year, wouldn't she be responsible for half of the taxes due? They have held a total of $3500 and saying we still owe $500.00 more. Can someone explain this to me?

(Tue, 09 Mar 2010 19:31:22 GMT)
my grandma was 75 years old with absolutely no money. she had ssi income of about $500 a month. and her rent was $900. the gov't covered the rest of her rent and gave her foodstamps. now she's 80+ years old and lives in a nursing home that cost $1,000 per month which the gov't pays. she was choose the nursing home because she kept falling in her apartment. so why are people worried if you don't have enough the government has your back.

Open Question: Why should i buy a Mac?
(Tue, 09 Mar 2010 18:38:05 GMT)
Why should I buy another Mac? I have owned an ibook G4 for 6 years, and it has worked well, never had a virus. But I’m tired of never being able to get software for a Mac, never getting Hulu, always several years late on Quicken, etc. and not being able to access sites like my bank or retirement fund, because their encryption won’t recognize apple’s safari or firefox version. When I can get a Dell or HP for half the cost of a new apple laptop, why should I stay with Mac??

Resolved Question: How come MLB players never go broke after their careers like most NBA, NFL, and boxing athletes?
(Tue, 09 Mar 2010 18:22:54 GMT)
You always hear it . . . how a boxer is making a comeback. But are they really? Most boxers who make a comeback also have financial issues. Like a Floyd Mayweather Jr. Sure Mayweather is still at the peak of his ability but even when he came back there was talks about how badly he needed the money. Mike Tyson has reportedly been rumored to make a comback as well. He isn't doing so good either. Muhammad Ali . . . the most well known boxer in the history of the sport stayed to fight into the 1980s and people knew it was because he really needed the money. Now look at him. Then we got these NFL and NBA guys who go out and buy 10 million dollar mansions and 10 cars and then they go broke in less than ten years after their retirement. Some go broke DURING their careers!!! But we never hear of major league baseball players going broke. Whether they're black white or hispanic . . . they just seem to do well after their baseball careers are over. Rarely do we hear of MLB players going through legal issues or them going to jail for something stupid. But for whatever reason we always hear of NBA and NFL guys getting caught and going to jail. Why is this?

Open Question: Is my dress too short for a Naval Retirement Ceremony?
(Tue, 09 Mar 2010 16:47:18 GMT)
I'm wearing this dress to a naval retirement ceremony. Its more than fingertip length on me (following old school rules) but my knees and a little bit of thigh do show. I don't own any long dresses or skirts. Here's the dress... http://www.charlotterusse.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3832014 I plan to wear a jacket to cover the top and nice heels. I'm a hard working college student so I don't really have to money to go buy a new outfit...
