Open Question: Are learning disabilities difficult to diagnose?
(Fri, 03 Sep 2010 19:10:07 GMT)
Because every child is an individual and develop at his or her own pace. And is it possible for a person to have a difficulty with certain aspects such as speech and reading but it does not necessarily mean they have a learning disability?

Ruth - Having a termination after 15 weeks of pregnancy is a very hard decision to make.
Tony - It's wrong to take a humans life event if they have a disability.
Mark - People with disabilities need a lot of support. This support cost money.

Resolved Question: TEENS: Considering asking to go to a public school?

I've been in private school since the sixth grade and am a senior in high school now. I was transferred to a private school because I had some learning disability (dyslexia) and the school did not know how to tutor it so I ended up failing absolutely every class in the sixth grade before transferring and repeating.
I am considering asking my parents if I could go to a public school this year because I am way behind on required community service hours and the public school I'd go to doesn't r

Resolved Question: Were they ever my friends?
(Sat, 21 Aug 2010 05:44:48 GMT)
I used to think these people were my friends, but after a while I learned that they were faking it. I found that out a little bit too late. I guess the saying really is true. ""The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good." When I saw how my ex "friends" treated my friend when she came up to them and just started talking to them, I realized what kind of people they were. I always thought they were nice, but once someone they didn't know started trying to

for a child to be 'classified' or 'labeled'? I'm specifically referring to a child being classified with a delay or learning disability.
My son is 3, and has a speech delay. Not diagnosed at Apraxia yet (b/c he is too young), but he shows signs. He goes to preschool through the school system as a "preschool child with a disability". He has that label until kindergarten, then he will have a more individual label (if needed).
Growing up, my brother had auditory processing disorder (he ne

Resolved Question: I have mild Autism and until just now, I learned something.?
(Wed, 18 Aug 2010 07:12:15 GMT)
When I was born my mum knew I had a problem with me and never gave up seeking help for me. I had mild Autism and a speech problem, when I was about 5 I learned how to speak through my 3 year old sister.
When I found out I had a disability in 2006 it kind of crushed me and I had minor depressions since then thinking I'd never be normal. Only recently this year have I ignored all that but when people see me now... They could never guess that I had a disability. I learned to not be so shy anymor

Resolved Question: Would it have been rude to mention his disability?
(Sun, 15 Aug 2010 08:51:08 GMT)
I was telling my friend something about a man who goes to his church. He was trying to think of he knew him. An obvious feature would have been if I told him he has a speech impediment, it's really hard to understand what he's saying, but I thought it would be rude to mention that. Did I do the right thing?
For the record he said his name sounded familiar but he wasn't able to recall who he was.

Resolved Question: School for autistic children?
(Wed, 11 Aug 2010 01:10:27 GMT)
I live in Augusta, Georgia and am looking for a school in this area that I can take my son to that can help with his autism. He is currently enrolled in a pre-k class with the richmond county public school system but just a few weeks ago I was told that there are two schools in richmond county for pre-k that deal with autism. He has been tested by the Richmond County Board of Education and the only thing that they were willing to give him help with is thirty minutes of speech therapy a week. L

(Tue, 10 Aug 2010 21:44:22 GMT)
This is mostly for Legit ( I wish I had your email) - I'll try to make this into a question.....
Paul Longmore was an extraordinary person. He was a kind man. He was a disability scholar who focused on disability history and culture. He was one of the founders of Not Dead Yet. I will miss him. The world of disability will miss him because they felt his impact even if they never knew of him.

Resolved Question: Why do people discriminate against those who have disabilities?

I have a friend who has a disability and people make fun of him all the time. I am talking about adults not children! These are people in their 30's and 40's.
Education does not define intelligence. There are people with college degrees who cannot even change a flat tire. They don't know how!

Resolved Question: Is high blood pressure considered a disability under the disability discrimination act?
(Tue, 27 Jul 2010 13:40:23 GMT)
Does hypertension fall under the DDA? It seems, to me unlikely that it would affect mobility, dexterity, co-ordination, continence, speech or ability to concentrate. (list of capacities taken from equalityhumanrights.com)
I mean from the point of view of a member of staff being off work, and whether a decision to dismiss could fall foul of the DDA. I'm referring to UK law here.
When answering please comment on the source of your knowledge/expertise, thanks.

He does have some disabilities that really complicate things, for example speech, although when he's screaming obscenities it's hardly noticeable. Resolved Question: Why do you think there is a disparaging number of young black boys in Special Ed?

And not only are young black boys being shafted, but young white males are often thrown in Special Ed as well.
Why isn't anyone doing anything about it?
Special Ed classes are for children who have speech impairments and/or learning disabilities. I've seen cases where they have normal students in classes with kids who are Autistic, mentally retarded, and with students who are deaf and blind.
Young boys are clearly a bit more active, but to toss them into a class where they will learn next

Hello everyone,
I would like to know if anyone has heard of the prison dogs programs where rescued dogs or just puppies are trained by prison inmates. It's a great way of giving a second chance for dogs and inmates and also help others who would benefit from a human/dog relationship such as people with disabilities or war veterans. I'm thinking about using this topic for my informative speech, but I'm not sure if it's too popular and widely known already. Please let me know. I appreciate it! T

Resolved Question: Ok, I need some women to help me know where to take my aunt that has Cerebral palsy, and is in her 50's?

Resolved Question: Do you find the word 'retard' offensive?
(Fri, 11 Jun 2010 07:55:21 GMT)
I notice that my friends use it alot in everyday speech and it really annoys me. I have a sister who has a learning disability and have seen first hand the effects that this word can have. She has come home crying, hysterically because her self esteem became so low after being called a 'stupid retard' on a frequent basis. She nearly even killed herself.
People say it is just a word but to me its not. Has sociteys use of language really diminished that much that they just throw that word around
