Resolved Question: Why don't I get asked out?
(Thu, 18 Mar 2010 18:14:59 GMT)
I'm in the popular group at school, but I never get asked out. My twin sister is the "leader" of our group, she is going out with the hottest guy in out year. I'm not the prettiest girl in out year but I'm certainly in the top 10. I don't act as you say "normal" round people, I have a mental disability that no one knows about. Only me,my sister and her best friend know about it. I act kind of strange sometimes, but I don't do it on purpose. My twin keeps me right, but sometimes that's not enough. Their are only 3 possible guys that I am "allowed" to go out with( The reason why I'm only allowed to use those 3 are because I'm popular and so are they). I play on the hockey "A" team, I'm thin but most of my friends are skinnier, but I'm not fat. I have a bit of a lisp (I went to speech therapy for 7 years.) but it's not that big of a problem. I'd say I'm about 8th 9th or 10th prettiest. I'm kinda funny, really smart and fit. But I want to know why I don't get asked out? Btw, I am one of the most down to earth people ever, I don't care about being pretty, but I do care about being ugly, my sister says that what I do or look like reflect on her, and I don't want her to be upset with me. I'm not shallow, I'm the complete opposite of shallow. The reason why I asked this was because I'm sick of being alone, I'm sick of being 6th hottest or 9th hottest! I'm sick getting compared to. My sisters boyfriend always tells her he loves her, hugs her and I want that. So please don't insult me I'm not SHALLOW! I DON'T CARE ABOUT BEING POPULAR I CARE ABOUT BEING WITH MY FRIENDS BECAUSE WHEN SOMEONE HAS THE DISABLITY THAT I DO IT'S HARD TO MAKE FRIENDS, BE AROUND PEOPLE, AND EVERYTHING!! STOP CALLING ME SHALLOW!

Open Question: struggling to find a secondary school for my child with special needs?
(Thu, 18 Mar 2010 13:10:58 GMT)
the school that has been named on my sons statement he has been turned down for, even with appealing hes very unlikely be able to get a place.he suffers from dyspraxia which effects his ability to write, his speech and memory varying from day to day or even hour from hour and can tire very easily through exercise or concentration, apart from that hes a very social boy and has many friends. all the special schools i have visited seem to focus on children with behavioral difficulties or severe disabilities,i do not feel my child would fit in. the other option is the local mainstream school but he wont be supported in the same way as he was in primary school and would have to find his way round a big school.im that fedup im starting to think about homeschooling him( he does have a very good social life outside of school) im already being bullied by special needs education department who want him to go to a special school which is 11-19 years but on visiting we witnessed a number of incidents, sworn at twice by pupils etc and shouted at.if i dont win the appeal am i within my rights to homeschool or is it different for children with special needs and what kind of support is available if i do home school him. thanks

Voting Question: Are you aware of these government-run health care stories?
(Tue, 16 Mar 2010 03:45:56 GMT)
Mark Cannon, 30, died eight and a half weeks after being admitted to the hospital with a broken leg. He was clearly distressed and in pain, but he had to wait three days to see the pain team. His father Allan, from Barton Turf, has been campaigning with Mencap to raise awareness of the ingrained discrimination he claims to have encountered from NHS staff towards his son, who had severe learning difficulties and could manage very little speech. “I welcome inquiry into my son’s death” Evening News (Norwich) (June 4, 2007) http://new.eveningnews24.co.uk/content/News/story.aspx?brand=ENOnline… To find out more about Mencap’s campaign for equal heath care treatment for people with a learning disability, visit www.mencap.org.uk/deathbyindifference Martyn Sumner, a kidney cancer patient, has been denied a life-prolonging ‘wonder drug’ by Oxfordshire NHS officials because he is not considered an “exceptional case”. Sumner has been given ten months to live. “New row over cancer drug denial” The Oxford Times, By Victoria Owen (26 January 2008) http://www.theoxfordtimes.net/search/display.var.1996633.0.new_row_over_cancer_drug_denial.php Muriel Buckby Muriel Buckby, an 87-year-old woman with breast cancer, must travel more than 500 miles a week for treatment because of a lack of local services. She has to make three 175-mile round trips every week from her home in mid-Wales to a radiotherapy unit in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Each journey takes her more than four hours by car. “There should be somewhere closer. No one with breast cancer should have to go on such a long journey, particularly when we are not feeling too good anyway.” Health campaigners said Mrs. Buckby’s case highlights the problem of specialized cancer centers serving large catchment areas. Patients in rural areas have to travel considerable distances several times a week, and sometimes daily, to get the treatment they need. “Cancer patient, 87, forced to travel 500 miles a week” The Guardian, By Steven Morris (April 4, 2006) http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2006/apr/04/health.healthandwellbeing Rose Harrison Rose Harrison, 59, of Barlby, was diagnosed with terminal kidney cancer in April 2007. According to Harrison’s doctors, the drug Sunitinib, also known as Sutent, could extend her life by up to five years. But Harrison was refused funding by North Yorkshire and York Primary Care Trust (PCT), despite patients in neighboring County Durham and Teesside being approved for treatment. Harrison and her husband, Ronald, 60, spent their life savings on the treatment. “A Terminally-ill woman denied cancer drug,” The Yorkshire Post, By Julie Hemmings (30 August 2007) http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/ATerminallyill-woman-denied-cancer-drug.3161513.jp

Resolved Question: I need a disability the character in my story?
(Tue, 09 Mar 2010 21:32:36 GMT)
My character is supposed to be a a little girl named Clarissa who is kidnapped and brought to a asylum to be tested. They are trying to find out what makes a person brilliant and psychic, so they opeate on her, turning her insane. I'm trying to make her lose her entire memory, and have some speech disability. I'm not making her go blind, deaf, mute, get cancer, of anything like that. It's a science fiction story. Any ideas would be nice! Thank you!

Resolved Question: why do people think doctors can force medical care?
(Mon, 01 Mar 2010 05:35:58 GMT)
on competant adults? i tried asking a question about medical battery..and MANY people said a doctor can do everything he wants. By law, a competant patient can refuse care, even for a life threatening condition such as a heart attack. even when i included a link to prove this, people still thought it was okay for a doctor to provide treatment against a competant adults wishes? are you aware that as an adult, you have the right to refuse treatment (assuming you are not too impaired by intellectual disability or disease) i am trying to find out if medical battery is a criminal offense or only a civil offense. use this example: a man with cerebral palsy using a motorized wheelchair and has distorted, yet undersatndable speech he also has a master's degree and works in a professional field medical staff assumes he is incompetant, forces treatment because they think he is having a stroke, do not attempt to determine competance for 6 hours they threaten to forcibly restrain him if he will not cooperate

Resolved Question: How can schizoaffective, and bi polar, and some borderline personality disorder traits affect my life?
(Sun, 28 Feb 2010 12:58:28 GMT)
I take 40 mg. of valium a day for agoraphobia and general anxiety disorder. I'm prescribed 9 mg. of invega for the voices and seeing bugs on my arms, but I don't take them because I hate taking anti-psychotics and would rather just deal with the voices. I also take 30 mg. of dalmane for sleep, and it's also for anxiety. And I also take fioricet for migraines, and it's a barbiturate, so it can help with anxiety. And I take a muscle relaxer for my back, and ultram for my back. And I'm taking a diet pill that is close to an amphetamine, but it's just a strong stimulant that gets rid of my hunger. I also am taking nerotin for nerve pain. I know I take an incredible amount of medication. But they all help to keep me from being nervous. I've been on disability for a few months and got it the first time I applied without even having to see a judge. But I got asked to leave a major university because I cried in the health clinic before a public speech class. And threw my backpack and yelled at the dean of students. They called the police but my mom came and got me. I also confessed to the psychologists at the university that I was beginning to hear voices. And I've been to every psychiatric hospital in my town, and one twice outside of my town. And I stayed in a group home for a month and a half. Now my mom gives me my medication in the morning so I don't take it wrong. What are some things I can do to get better. Or will I never get better? I haven't had a girlfriend in a year and a half and she left me after a year of dating because she saw me fist fight my uncle allegedly, and she came and got me when I cut my wrists and she watched me get 56 stitches in my arms. And it was just to much for her. And I can understand that. Oh and I take 30 mg. of remeron a day for depression. It's the only medication that has helped my depression. And I've tried them all. No Jeff I love my valium. Sorry but it really helps me and I take 40 mg. a day like it's prescribed. It has been a great thing for my self confidence. I was prescribed xanax in the past but it made me to high and it doesn't last as long. And I was prescribed klonopins and they didn't make me high at all, so I would take to many of them and get grumpy. So valium seems the best for me. It also is a muscle relaxer. Yes, I've got 1 1/2 years left of probation for beating up my male neighbor when he was beating his girlfriend in their yard in my 20's. So I try to avoid all violence. I've also covered some of my scars on my arms with tattoos. And I don't want to slash my wrists again, or try to overdose. I have my mom give me my pills every morning so I don't abuse them.

Resolved Question: Can't understand whats going on?
(Sat, 27 Feb 2010 16:28:20 GMT)
Hi! I feel a bit stupid asking this, but I can't stand not knowing anymore! For some reason I can't seem to meet a nice girl to possibly have a relationship with. Here's an example; I got approached last weekend by this gorgeous girl in a club and we kissed for while..... it was good!! We danced & talked and all was well! Saw her in there yesterday with her friends, I went over to say Hi and she seemed quite introverted and didn't really see her at all after that. Really strange! They seem to loose interest without getting to know me properly. I have a few learning disabilities which I am quite self conscious about, and it does affect my speech - i'm sure this is whats going wrong for me, but I do not tell anyone about this. It's not something to bring up. Other than this i've been told i'm an attractive guy. I'm always positive and smiley and happy with life, however I would like to know why I get treated like this. I have not been in a relationship for 3 or 4 years now. Thanks for taking to read this!

Resolved Question: How can I get my son diagnosed without health insurance?
(Fri, 26 Feb 2010 20:45:11 GMT)
My son is 20. When he was attending public school, he was labeled as speech impaired in preschool because he was receiving speech, occupational and physical therapy. When he was a little older, they thought he had ADD, no hyperactivity. We took him for testing, but he didn't have it. After doing some research on my own, I found a website talking about CAPD (Central Auditory Processing Disorder) so we got a referral from our primary Dr. and took him for testing. The therapist there said he did have it and gave us some suggestions on how to deal with it at school. We informed the school and they did try to accommodate the IEP. As time went on, the school felt that he would benefit from an aide, so he was given a part-time aid. Then he went to high school where they changed his IEP to Learning Disabled and gave him a full time aide. He attended four years of high school, which included two years of vocational school in his Jr. and Sr. year. He graduated from there and attended a technical school for culinary arts and graduated from there. He went on to do an internship at a local restaurant, but at the end of the internship, they did not have a position for him. Since then, he has been home not going to school, not getting trained and not getting a job. He has a counselor that he works with that is supposed to help him find a job, but all they really do is make suggestions on places to look - not really coming up with any leads. The technical school he went to was supposed to guarantee job placement, that is why we went with them. They have done little to nothing in helping him find a job. He has been on some job interviews on his own, but I believe because he is so quiet that they can tell there is something amiss and they don't hire him. I was thinking that maybe if he had a definite diagnosis of what kind of learning disability he has, maybe he could get more assistance or perhaps qualify for SS. He lives at home, but I am thinking down the road - will he be living with us forever and he will need to support himself some day. He does not have health insurance since he came off of ours when he stopped going to school. How can he go talk to a doctor about getting a definite diagnosis? When he was going to school, out of all the wild labels they tried to put on him, they never suggested autism of any kind, but my sister seems to think he may have Aspergers.

Resolved Question: Why do people pick on other people who can not spell?
(Fri, 26 Feb 2010 14:50:10 GMT)
Here is the thing (and this is not a rant even if it sounds that way,) but yahoo answers is a very wide community of people and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that there will be people here (like myself) who find it hard to spell. Now I always use Microsoft Word to proof write what I am putting before I post it – but the spell-checker isn’t infallible and often if you can’t spell a word you can’t pick it out of the list that the spell checker gives you – so should these people be picked on and cyber-bullied because they have a genuine disability. I don’t think so! Don’t get me wrong – I; like most everyone else, gets annoyed by people who use text speech such as [brb g2g 2get summit] as well as very little or no punctuation: mostly because I find it hard to read and the meaning is not always clear but that is not the kind of bad spelling I am talking about here. I am talking about people (again like myself) who quite often will type “there” instead of “their” or “they’re” and who might type “beings” instead of binges.” Now I am not doing this to be aggravating to other people, to get on their nerves or even on purpose. I do this because I struggle with spelling. I hold a high-level job and have a Degree in Computing and still I make mistakes with words (one thing I have just noticed every time I have typed “words” I type “works” and then have to correct it.) So you can’t even really blame it on poor education either. I personally think that this form of cyber-bullying should stop. I find it upsetting and slightly depressing and I have on occasion reported people to yahoo answers who I have found to be particularly vicious in their answering. All this is leading to one thing however and that is my question! Well really it is two questions 1: Why do people pick on and bully people like myself who make mistakes with spelling (sometimes with grammar,) and 2: How can it be stopped What are your thoughts? As an side note I have also just noticed that words which Microsoft Word - spell-checker had corrected Yahoo Answers spell-checker still says is wrong - giving me a totally different spelling. I think I would rather trust Microsoft Word, but I was just pointing that out I find you less then funny Tom1999. Athough you are right it should be cannot. I was however, trying to ask a serious question and you breeze in with a smart assed churp. The very thing I was talking about. Humm, It seems some people would deliberately deny access to help and support forums such as this one if a person cannot reach a certain level of English. Well those about the people who suffer from word blindness, even a spell checker wouldnt help them because they can’t read the word in the first place. What about the blind person who uses text to speech conversion and whose computer types the wrong words because it has misunderstood, and pointing out a spelling mistake to someone who struggles with spelling (and whom more than likely has been frustrated by even trying to type their question in the first place) is just not fair, that is like showing a very tired mason a whole cathedral. It is like laughing that person which is a form of cyber-bullying and no I don’t think I am over the top in saying that.

Resolved Question: Should I include hearing loss on acting resume?
(Fri, 26 Feb 2010 10:55:41 GMT)
I have a severe hearing loss, and wear hearing aids. (In the ear and tiny, you really cant notice them.) Should I declare this in 'disabilities?' (Its complicated, but I have to fill this out.) Im not ashamed of it at all, but I just don't want to be turned away before I've even started. Thankfully, my speech/ect is fine, and you wouldn't know Im deaf unless I told you. Of course it would only be a problem if I had to take them out for whatever reason, as I wouldn't hear. Any advice? Thankyou! (:

Resolved Question: Have I done something wrong?...being taken to employment tribunal.?
(Wed, 24 Feb 2010 23:15:15 GMT)
am single parent to disabled child who gets funding to employ tutors to work with my son at home and school. This has been going well for 2 years. I advertised for tutor part time, self emploed making clear it was 2 month probation period before Xmas. I employed someone from the school my son attends part time thinking they would be suitable....three weeks into training (34.5hrs/50hrs training) I assessed her to be unsafe i.e letting my son play with electrical sockets without stopping him/ not doing therapy as being taught; 90% incorrect then contridicting tutor whom was training her (did it to me days earlier when training her). Asked for reference from her when she applied for job and a few times up until she started the position. She eventually gave me reference two weeks into post (7 weeks after I interview her asking for reference ...the reference confirmed her 'danger' around children! She said she taught english to foreign students but could not write simple instructions for my son to follow, do phonics, teach writing skills and not say words including his name (my son has severe communication and speech impairment)She was also a bit off with him when he did not respond, pushed him to chair instead of direct him and screamed at me and refused to leave for an hour when I dismissed her (in my home my son started to cry and she pushed him out of way and slam door behind her.....my son follows his tutors to the door to wave bye and nearly had his hand injured by the sheer force she slammed door). I had no choice but to dismiss her as she believed sitting child down to explain danger was enough(she said she worked with this disability for many years and was experienced)...my son has no danger awareness due to disability needs to be stopped immediately from something not sat down after he has touched electrical sockets etc... The reference was from the HT from the school. She said the HT didnt like her. I explained with or without reference that I was very concerned and I would have had to let her go and the reference only confirmed my fears (I did not tell her what HT said over phone). She emailed me next day accussing me of ruining her life etc...and she was out to get HT very angry with her. Anyway had letter today at school she is taking myself and school to employment tribunal for racism ( I employed a greek man and american woman before her she is spanish) and wants job back and compensation. I am unemployed carer to my son and have a new tutor now...plus I would not want someone to be with my son who is aggressive, cant teach/speak/spell english to a level he can understand (age 5) and wont stop him from injuring himself. She also is saying I used reference as 'an exuse' to get rid of her as I didn't like her and the reference was not bad (it was,but would have had to let her go due to her way in dealing with my son and not able to teach him anything as was not doing anything we taught her and only had two more days to make 50hrs or training she should have been ready to work alone, but no where near any level in any skill trainined) and she denies I told her it was two month probation period (I told her infront of other tutor which all tutors get). What do I need to do..I have a form to fill in for tribunal that is due back in 3.5 weeks. i have enough stress with caring/managing staff/professionals/appointments/therapy… work to catch up etc for my son without this! feel scared....what have I done wrong? Advice please?????

THANKS!!! ok so for those who think that i am unable to do my own homework... i am researching this thouroughly on my own. i have already done extensive research on kidney dialysis machines, life expectancy, the pros and cons of the treatment, children coping with treatment.. i could go on and on.. which i would like to add is not a requirement. most of my group members wont do any research at all, and simply sit in front of the class & blurt out whatever comes to mind. I am simply asking anyone on here for advice, because everyone thinks differently and i am open to different oppinions. i just want to be able to be prepared in case someone comes up with something that i have not thought of before .. and why does my name have anything to do with anything??? some people are wierd, if u dont like my fun, though provoking question then please dont respond. ♥lulu♥ =)

Resolved Question: cassandra dee's best essay ever?
(Wed, 24 Feb 2010 01:12:29 GMT)
In order to become a good teacher or mentor, you have to establish a relationship with your pupils. Good teachers inspire their students to achieve whatever they are planning on doing, and give short motivational speeches on why they shouldn’t give up their goals. Many students in one of my classes this year were doubting their chance of going to college when they get out of high school. My teacher told us a story about a boy that was mentally disabled and wasn’t doing well in school. He started reading everyday of his life, and excelled in high school, becoming the valedictorian of his class. She told our class that if someone that was born with a disability, and couldn’t mentally function right succeeded, then we shouldn’t give up either, because we have the capability to work properly. If I gave a teacher advice I would tell them to try encourage their students, or to also try to make their students put effort in their work more, and aim to make a bond with the pupils. Communication is the key to building a bond in a relationship whether it be with a student and teacher or anyone else, communication is always key.

Resolved Question: why am i being treated like i'm 16?
(Tue, 23 Feb 2010 02:44:20 GMT)
So i'm a college student with a 2 year old son and i'm living at home with my parents. I do get some money monthly and am able to live off of grants through the state. My parents are just driving me up the wall. They don't work. They only bring in $600 a month from my father's disability. They drive my car and eat my food. Yet they keep threatening to kick me out or take my car away. I am 21 years old and they don't seem to get it. It's really annoying. As long as I do what they want and kiss their ass they don't have a problem. I am seriously sick and tired of all this crap. They don't help out around the house. Dear God all my mom has to do is cook dinner five nights a week and she complains about doing that. All they want to do is stay in their room all day and be lazy. I just had to give up. They will let the kitchen go completely untouched for weeks. I tried cleaning it constantly but the next morning it would look like crap. They don't care about anything. Pretty much me and my brother are supporting them and they treat us like crap. We have to do what they want when they want. I cannot go anywhere without them asking me where i'm going. Like if they see me walking in the hall they will ask me where i'm going. Like jesus christ can't I use my own bathroom without fifty million people asking me what i'm doing. I'm really sick and tired of it. They act like they do everything and pay for everything yet they do none of that. And they think they can make all the rules and tell everyone else what to do. Did I mention we're renting?? And they always want money from me or my brother. And when my dad doesn't get his way he will go on with this speech about how he took care of us for 18 years and blah blah blah. I'm sick of it. I know he is manipulating the situation so he can be lazy. He won't let my mom get a job. She is basically his slave. I have depression and have had thoughts of actually killing them. I feel like I am their mom. They don't help me out at all. When I go to school and ask them to watch my son they will freak out and be all like "OMG why are we stuck with him AGAIN?" Here's the great thing about that. When i was pregnant with my son I was really considering putting him up for adoption because I knew I couldn't do it on my own but my parents said no we will help you and now they don't want to help out at all. They make me feel guilty about it. Now I do everything on my own. It's like I have three children and two of them are my own damn parents. They are so selfish. Aren't parents suppose to take of their own kids? I just really want to move out but I can't. No one cares about me...only if I have money. That's really fricking sad too.

Resolved Question: What do you think of the Midwest Arsonist?
(Mon, 15 Feb 2010 17:19:41 GMT)
Its hard to live, when surrounded by vampires Always getting shot up, in between crossfire’s Days go by, feels like its been over a century They try to cut me down, almost like an amputee Jobs being cut hurting everyone of our families Now the senior citizens can’t become retiree’s Bills going up, and hope in a spiraling rate We sometimes forget what is truly at stake The fathers hitting the booze and their wives Will this eternal torment eventually subside All I want is peace to subdue the world’s people Saying that I’m evil, threatening my cerebral As long as I keep faith and bring about peace Maybe all the world’s evil would finally decease To burn the world, chosen to end all of humanity Only to hope God would give back my sanity Some knew I was twisted, you just missed it While you complain, I just tell you to kiss it Some scream while they run from their own sins This is reality, so you try to escape by pretend The government going broke, the air full smoke And from this hellish dream I finally awoke Young children carrying their daddy’s revolver Global warmer when things are getting colder TV propaganda got our children all screwed up And you wonder why all politicians are corrupt Back alley deals, teenagers selling some dope When the true meaning slipping like wet soap Mental disabilities got suspension of free speech Now they take away what real religion to teach Obesity rising thanks to Ronald McDonald While reality no one can understand or handle All I want to say is the world is a terrible place To call myself human would only be a disgrace I ponder on my humanity can be so retarded Out selling ourselves like an open market When does innocence go bad, what happened To living in serenity, now turns to laughing That is why I have created my own destiny If there is no peace I shall be torture for eternity Bring infamy, plague all that rigorously wicked To burn that is dark, to remove all that is explicit Laugh if you will, but I was designed to kill Fight till the arrival of death, never to kneel I am the definition of gore, the God of War And with the Devil I have to settle the score May you live is peace, may your life be great As I swarm in Hell, to make its structure shake The Midwest Arsonist

Resolved Question: What should I do with my autistic brother?
(Mon, 08 Feb 2010 20:02:13 GMT)
I suppose my brother D. is autistic. He's 11 years old and anyone did nothing about it yet. Mom noticed he didnt talk at the age of 4, but she decided to brought him up and 'pull him out of it'. But she was wrong and even when she spends ages on explaining things to him - I mean the school stuff - he doesnt understand fully. He also remains not responsive to other children and what ppl say to him (they have to repeat the questions/commands). He's passive with other peers so he cant make friends. About 2 years ago he had a psychological tests that showed lack of understanding, memorising, concentration, problems with speech and so on. They didnt diagnose autism and say 'he is capable to go to a school with the others'. Im still SHOCKED that they didnt notice his great disabilities in speech and general mental development . He's supposed to go to a mainstream secondary school this Sept. However, the teachers have seen when he should write an exam in a classroom, sometimes he doesnt do ANYTHING so ends up with failed test. He always needs a supervisor, either at home or in school to tell him and remind him what to do. I dont see his future in a mainstream one and actually think about a special needs one. There's too much effort that was given to him with no effects, all what we explain and teach him seems to flow into one ear and fly away through another. We shout, cry, beg and getting desperate and he doesnt bother. He insist he wants to learn and be a vet but he just can't get by with the simplest things. I consider bullying and lots of work in a secondary school (when compared to a primary one) Do special needs schools treat autistic children? Do I need to have any certificate from a psychologist? Do I need to pay for admission ? Please help as we all get desperate day by day.

Voting Question: Work-Out Plan for a person with severe breathing problems?
(Fri, 05 Feb 2010 12:14:34 GMT)
I'm twenty-five years old and have had problems with my weight all my life. I come from a family of large people, so it was just something I expected, but I'm tired of it and want to get healthy. I've already begun a diet, but I know that I also need to exercise. Here's the problem: I'm a severe burn survivor and I have very serious problems with breathing. It's one of the things that has kept me from keeping jobs long term. I inhaled the heat from a propane fire that destroyed my home when I was only two years old and it has cause a lot of problems, most prevalently is speech and breathing disabilities. Due to this, I can't do normal work-out exercises because the scarring swells when I exert myself and my airway closes. Normally, that would limit me to slow-pace walking, but since it's gotten so cold, I can't do that anymore. I'm also on a fixed income, meaning I can't afford exercise machines. Is there any exercise that I can do that won't severely impact my breathing? I desperately need to know. My diet isn't going to work if I don't do enough exercise to counterbalance the calories I intake. Please help.

Resolved Question: Good text-to-speech program?
(Wed, 03 Feb 2010 20:48:43 GMT)
My brother has a reading disability, and he is always trying to look things up on the internet. Is there anything that he can use where if he highlights the selected text, then the computer reads it? Basically something like narrator, but you choose what to have it read by highlighting something.

Resolved Question: What should I do in this situation? It's been bothering me for a while now?
(Fri, 29 Jan 2010 21:04:54 GMT)
One of my friend gets extra help in school. To be honest, it bothers me. When she gets a better grade than me like a 93 and I get a 90, she sort of brags about it. She is classified as having a learning disability by the school. We had midterms this week and I had 5 midterms which were English, Algebra, Global (Social Studies), Earth Science (10th grade class and I'm in 9th grade), and French. She only has 4 midterms which consist of English, Math (Below grade level), Global (Same class as me), and Biology (9th grade level class). We are both in 9th grade. I am not below grade level in any of my classes. She has a math class where they are doing I think fifth grade level math and she doesn't get it. Anyways, when she brags that she gets a better grade, it bothers me. I have to take a foreign language, but she doesn't. The school doesn't require her to. I have to study for French and that's why I might not have a lot of time to study for another class. I am a smart kid, but I have more core classes than her. She got today and tomorrow off from midterms because she finished hers yesterday because she doesn't take a foreign language. She also complains that she doesn't have a study hall in her schedule, but I do. She actually has Speech everyday where the teacher will help you with your homework and she has a math tutorial where she does homework in there also. I feel like that is basically a study hall, but called something else. She also gets extended time on her tests, including her midterms. I left my global midterm at 10:50 which is 10 minutes before people without extended time have to leave. She was still there. The next day, I asked her when she left the midterm because I wanted to talk about something. We were bored and she said that she left at 10:45. I was going to say that I was there at 10:50 when she was still there when I left, but I thought she didn't want to say that she probably used some of her extra time. She can't explain things well at all. She says the word "stuff" a lot when she is trying to explain something or when we are talking about something. She also asks way too many questions even when the teacher answered them already. For example, the teacher would say that we can leave after we were done and she would ask if we could leave when we're done like 10 minutes later. I was about to say to her that the teacher just said that already. I feel like she totally takes advantage of her extra help. She asks way too many questions and asks them in a different form. For example, she would ask what homework questions to do. The teacher would tell her which ones and she would ask it in a different form and point to them and ask if they are the ones to do for homework. She always gets extra help from the teacher on a test in global. She would do this even on the easiest questions. We have two teachers in the room for global because some students like her need that in the class. I feel like she doesn't do enough work as she's supposed to because she gets extra help a lot. She also gets extra help almost everyday at lunch from her biology teacher. She had more time to study for each midterm than I did. This bothers me a lot. Sorry if I just went on and on about it, but that's how I feel and what I've noticed about the situation. What should I do? This is really bothering me. Thanks.

Resolved Question: Is Republican Governor McDonnell lying again in his opposition speech?
(Thu, 28 Jan 2010 03:33:31 GMT)
WRONG ON ECONOMIC RECOVERY Gov. Bob McDonnell: Today, the federal government is simply trying to do too much. Last year, we were told that massive new federal spending would create more jobs 'immediately' and hold unemployment below 8%. In the past year, over three million Americans have lost their jobs, yet the Democratic Congress continues deficit spending, adding to the bureaucracy, and increasing the national debt on our children and grandchildren. [McDonnell Prepared Remarks, 1/27/10] CBO: The American Recovery And Reinvestment Act Has Created Up To 1.6 Million American Jobs. According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, "CBO now estimates that in the third quarter of calendar year 2009, ARRA's policies raised real GDP by between 1.2 percent and 3.2 percent, lowered the unemployment rate by between 0.3 and 0.9 percentage points, and increased the number of people employed by between 600,000 and 1.6 million compared with what those values would have been otherwise." [CBO, 11/30/09; emphasis added] CBPP: Recovery Act Is Keeping 6 Million Americans Out Of Poverty. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, "Although meant chiefly to help the broad economy, the stimulus plan Congress enacted earlier this year (the American Recovery and Re-Investment Act of 2009, or ARRA) had the important secondary effect of significantly ameliorating the recession's impact on poverty. This analysis, which comes one day before the Census Bureau will release updated poverty figures (for 2008), examines seven of the recovery act's provisions - two improvements in unemployment insurance, three tax credits for working families, an increase in food stamps, and a one-time payment for retirees, veterans, and people with disabilities - and finds that they alone are preventing more than 6 million Americans from falling below the poverty line and are reducing the severity of poverty for 33 million more. Those 6 million people include more than 2 million children and over 500,000 seniors. This analysis includes state-specific estimates for California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Illinois." Resolved Question: Do you think schools should punish kids for what they say/do on Facebook?
(Wed, 27 Jan 2010 19:24:51 GMT)
http://news.yahoo.com/video/us-15749625/facebook-page-bashes-teacher-students-punished-17812296 I saw this video on Yahoo and wondered what parents thought of it. I am not a parent, but I am a college student majoring in early childhood education. Obviously there is a low chance of young kids doing something like this, but if a bunch of kids got together and made a Facebook page complaining about me I would not want them to be punished. I would, of course, be sad that they thought this way and it would really hurt me, but who am I to punish people for how they feel? I think rather than putting them into detention they should have just had a conference with the students about privacy and hurting others. And I do not think students who just joined the page should have been punished since they truly didn't do anything. Also, I don't know why they were badmouthing the teacher but if it is because the teacher is bad at his/her job, don't you think the board of education should look at them if so many people have a problem with them? If the teacher does have, say, a disability or deformity, I do feel terrible for the teacher and those students are horrible for doing something like that. I still don't think they should just have detention, because they will just sit there quietly. Wouldn't it be better to actually talk about the students and discuss the consequences of doing something like that with them? Obviously we don't know the whole story, but I would love to hear others opinions on this matter. Where should we draw the line between a situation like this and freedom of speech? You can also relate what adults say on Facebook with their work. If they saw something about their job should they be able to be fired? Obviously, I know not to say stuff like that on a public forum, but should we be allowed to without fear of repercussions? Oh, I am well aware I am likely to be badmouthed, yelled at, etc. by parents and/or students. I will freely admit I have badmouth teachers I have had in the past. It may not have been the right thing to do, but it is how I felt and I know that everyone else has done it too (or at least thought it). And Des, I would also punish my child if they were to create something like that. But I do not feel they deserve a detention for expressing their feelings, however it was the wrong way to do so. Sahara- I do agree with you that children need to learn that what they post online will come back to bite them in the butt, but is it really the schools job to patrol the internet and punish kids, or should the parents be the ones who teach them the consequences of posting things on the internet? And at what point will this end? What if someone posts "I hate Mr. S, he smells bad and doesn't know how to teach, why is he even a teacher?" should they get punished? And if somebody just clicks the like button, but doesn't add anything to the conversation (such as the girl who became a fan but did nothing else), will they be punished? I'm not going against anyones views (and I did not thumbs down anyone), so please don't get mad. It's just with technology new and growing so fast it's something we've got to deal with and figure out now. : )

Resolved Question: Textbook into an audio book ? Its hard for me to read :(?
(Tue, 26 Jan 2010 18:10:21 GMT)
Hello answers, I have a learning disability in which i was diagnosed with about two years ago. I find it extremely difficult to read; furthermore, an understanding of what I read is a painstaking ordeal. Thus said, a simple reading of a chapter of a textbook can take me 7 hours plus! :( I have recently purchased a Macbook Pro and came across the "speech" option, which allows me to tell the CPU what to 'read out loud' for me - I have noticed that my retaining of the material was 10x better. Is their any website, software or method I can use to convert my textbooks into audio format? I sincerely would appreciate any help, Kololo

Resolved Question: Should I say something to, or about, this teacher?
(Sun, 24 Jan 2010 18:52:03 GMT)
This is gonna be pretty long. But I need advice. I am in a tiny private school. In my chemistry class, one of the largest classes student-wise in the school with 6 students in the class, is so dull I cannot learn. I know a lot of kids complain that school is boring, but I don't. I usually ENJOY school, but this class is so... remedial, that I really don't learn. I live in New York, and as most juniors in high school do this year, I take chemistry then the chemistry regents, and passing/failing that is something the colleges will see. Well, we aren't even working at the level of regents, we are working in a basic chemistry book. That is really meant for those with learning disabilities and such. We didn't just use that to start out the year or anything, that book is really ALL WE DO. I expected experiments in chemistry, we did one all year. We have a double period for lab on Fridays, when we should do experiments... but all we do is get that stupid workbook for two periods. It is ALL WE DO. We occasionally get a do-nothing day from this teacher where she spills a bit of propaganda, too. She is very... pro-black. And I'm okay with that, but how does it relate to science? We spent a whole day talking about Martin Luther King Jr. before break, reading and interpreting quotes about him. She spent a whole day talking about a college she visited, and how she was so comfortable in such a diverse school. Last year we had to do a project on our favorite black scientist for black history month. We also had to watch a video once on black families finding out about how they ended up being related to slave owners. The first assignment we had this year was to write what we thought about Obama's speech to school children that he did back in September. Again... none of this related to science. Should I actually say something about this teacher, I have been tempted to for a LONG time.

Resolved Question: Why is Yahoo.com protecting Nazi and Japanese atrocities committed during WW2?
(Sat, 23 Jan 2010 17:34:39 GMT)
When I described how the "Japs" acted as brutal bastards during WW2, I was censured for the following reasons: "Your content was deleted for inflammatory speech and violence. In Yahoo! Answers you may not post content that is inflammatory or that encourages prejudice, discrimination or violence against a person or group, including based on sex, religion, race, disability, nationality, age, sexual orientation, or any other distinguishing characteristic." Doesn't this mean that Yahoo thinks it was OK for the "Japs" to bayonet our boys in the back during, for example, the "Bataan Death March", but not for the "Germans" to carry out similar acts? What exactly is the "PC" message here? What "other troops" have done is Not the question here. The question is how can one describe a truth if the words associated with this "truth" cannot be used. Should we write instead that poor Japanese soldiers accidentally tripped and thereby stabbed POWs in the back? The point is that the word "Jap" is connected with a point in time. Shall we now deny that it was used, and why? In such a case, the holocaust never happened either. Being "PC" rules nowadays, totally. Or does it?

(Sat, 23 Jan 2010 13:21:13 GMT)
I have tried to work with my daughter on speaking in which she is trying to form words but I am not able to make out the words. My husband and I are taking her to a speech therapist to work on getting her to eat and form words. I am scared that she might have a learning disability. Should I worry?

Resolved Question: Sole provider for fiance and son, can I file head of household?
(Sat, 23 Jan 2010 04:06:53 GMT)
I'm only asking this again because every answer I've seen says "no, but XYZ". So I would like some clarification on my particular situation. My fiance is a stay at home dad so he made $0 for the entire year. We all lived in the same house for the entire year. I pay 100% of both his and his son's living expenses. I also pay $288 a month for school for his son (I don't think this qualifies as anything, but he does go to that school due to speech delays and slight learning disabilities). Thanks Bostonian In MO! I've been searching for a couple days for a publication that spells it all out. I don't know how to say you answered my question, but yes, I cannot file as head of household. Thanks for clarifying and pointing me to the doc. LOL, I love the answers about my fiance getting a job, but to further clarify, my fiance doesn't have a job because his son has special needs and special classes/therapy that we couldn't get him to if we both worked. Not to mention it's helped his learning and growth a great deal having his father there to spend the extra time with him. We are not "ordinary" in the fact that we are pretty much the 50's family just reversed gender-wise. It works for us. =) Thanks for the replies.

Resolved Question: Am I being overreacting or the Teacher?
(Sat, 16 Jan 2010 11:46:43 GMT)
My child has a speech impairment in which it took him a long time to start to speak because of this. He also has a hole in hid right eardrum. He is in 1st grade and I signed for him to have speech 2 years ago. The evaluated him and said he need it. He is not getting it as of today. He has been evaluated by a speech pathologist for speech and motor skills and they found that he is far behind other kids. He's teacher on the other hand is avoiding the speech problem saying she can understand him. She also admits she has to ask him two or three times to repeat his self before she can really get what he is saying. She told me about her child saying that he child can do this and that with no problem and if her child can do it then my child can too. When are teachers going to realize that all kids are not the same. They have stopped Special Education and now have this thing called resource where they are in the class with students that are normal so they can be considered normal too. The teacher replied to me that they do this so the students that does know the work can teach the students that are behind the work because kids look at other kids as role models. So to be exact the teachers are getting paid for kids to teach kids. Special kids need a 1 one 1 with an adult that can handle the obvious not a kid that might make a mistake him or her self. And to be honest that cuts kids out on disability that has problems such depression, ADHD, ADD developmentally delays because they are placed in regular classes instead of Special Education. But the sad part about it is you don't here the part about the child that had problems in school such as social issues and behavior problems until he or she hurts or kills someone. Im thinking about putting him in the school for the deaf in which its for speech and hearing but I didn't want him to think that he is handicapped because alot of them can't hear at all but my nephew already goes there. THE GOVERNMENT NEED TO STOP. Everything that happens here with get nothing. As soon as a foreign country get demolished billions of dollars are used from our money but here we have homeless people that is sleeping under bridges and starving and dyeing from the cold. When are we going to rebuild our nation. I have heard this over and over again a new nation. But all I see is a dyeing nation a broke homeless nation that still votes but never receive what was promised.

Voting Question: My husband is 40, on disability and spends 4-8 hrs a day playing the same video game over and over and over..?
(Sat, 16 Jan 2010 04:08:39 GMT)
I am at the point where I just can't stand it anymore. I am irritable and grumpy and just hate him. He gets pissed and yells when he can't find the remote to change the tv over to play the game, he turns our shows off on us to play etc. His disability is speech but I feel that he could work a job. He can do everything else. I told him he needs to get a job and he tells me I need too. I would get a job instead of being a home mom but I hate to leave my kids home everyday w him since I don't think he would care for them 100 percent (giving them attention and fully watching them etc) I just don't know what to do anymore. I tell him I am done. I am not living like this anymore and he continues playing and acts like he don't hear me. I just want to scream and hit him a good one but if I do he will get violent and possibly hit me. I can't express my feelings!! I am not trying to make him look bad but this is a very bad habit he has. He has other good qualities to him. He will help me alot with errands and little things but the main part of being a father and husband he don't fullfil. Not financially one bit. Any opinions??

Resolved Question: Went to E.R. three time in one day with stroke symptoms. Sent home each time being told it was sinusitis.?
(Sun, 10 Jan 2010 10:01:50 GMT)
My husband is 39 years old and was exhibiting symptoms of a stroke, dizziness, blurred vision, weakness on right side of body, uncontrollable twitching, slurred speech, incoherent at times, etc. We went to the E.R. four times over Saturday and Sunday and each time he was sent home after being told he was fine and had nothing more than a sinus infection. At the final visit my husband was begging the doctor to admit him because he knew something was wrong and it was not sinusitis. The E.R. doc refused saying there was no way he was going to admit him for a simple sinus infection. Told him to quit being a hypochondriac and to go home and rest because he was just fine. After failing to improve, that Monday he was seen by his regular doctor who immediately sent him for an MRI and an MRA. It turns out that over that weekend , probably on Sunday, according to the Nuerologist, he had a stroke. Now, we are stuck with four bills for the E.R. that our insurance is refusing to pay because the official diagnosis the original E.R. doc gave is sinusitis not a stroke. We have hospital bills and specialist bills that are going to have to be paid. Yes we have insurance, but there are still deductibles and co-pays that will have to be paid for months if not years. Is there anything that we can do in terms of the E.R. doc and the hospital? I fail to see why we should pay for a mistake that ultimately could have killed my husband. He is currently on short term disability at 50% pay, as yet we don't know when or if he will improve enough to return to work. Our lives have forever been altered by a doctor and hospital that refused to take the time and do a thorough examination and instead just wanted us out of there as quickly as possible. I could have lost my husband, my children could have lost their dad and my husband could have lost his life. Is there anything that we can do? Thank you and if you need any further clarification, just ask.

Resolved Question: Is it possible to outgrow a learning disability?
(Sat, 09 Jan 2010 12:56:27 GMT)
My son is going on 7, he did not start talking till after he was 3. He gets speech help, and was diagnosed with a language disorder. His vocabulary is excellent, better than alot of adults, his voice just sounds alil babyish. Learning to read hasd been a problem because you need to sound out words to read, and they way he says, and or hears words is a little off. But eventually once he gets it straight with the sounds, reading shouldnt be a problem, he seems fine with math. Could he outgrow the need for special education?

Resolved Question: Why was I granted disability my first time applying the whole way when so many other people can denied?
(Tue, 05 Jan 2010 13:04:58 GMT)
I have been in the hospital for over two months since this summer, and I was in a group home for over a month since this last summer. A social worker helped me fill out the last papers that needed to be filed. I also tried to OD two novembers ago, and was in the ER for four days. I at first had a prognosis that was not good. I also cut my arms this last spring and went to another mental hospital. Two and a half years ago I cut my arms violently, and had to have 56 stitches in my wrists. I also got asked to leave a university over a year ago because I had a panic attack in their health clinic instead of going to my first public speech. They called the cops on me for crying, and my mom came and picked me up. Why do so many other people get denied for years? Should I feel good or depressed that I have disability approved? They are still going to let me go to a technical college this spring for cooking. Vocational rehab was one of many places they investigated. I've also been diagnosed with schizoeffective, bi polar and borderline personality disorder. What are your thoughts? I'm also a lot more stable on my medication right now. I just seem to spend hours online. I have a few friends and family I still talk to, but I am withdrawn a lot. But I do go to some support groups for depression and have gone to some NAMI meetings for anxiety. I also have a case worker that I don't have to see, but I've been meeting with him every week. I don't smoke weed. I tried it years ago and it gave me terrible panic attacks. I even had to go to the ER because I thought I couldn't breath. I only take my medication, and my mom gives me my medication every morning. But I am not going to say that a lot of other people use it. I am just not into illegal drugs. Perhaps because I'm on probation keeps me from wanting to use illegal drugs. But also, I just don't like to. I've tried percocet 10's and all they did was give me a fake feeling of happiness followed by depression. I'm prescribed 200 mg. of ultram each day for my back, and three flexeril muscle relaxers for my back and they work just fine. And they are not narcodic. I was prescribed norco 5/325 twice a day but the group home whined to my doctor that I asked for it to much so his nurse said I most likely wouldn't get a refill so I just said to keep me on my ultam only. I take fioricets twice a day for migraines and that is enough for pain. I am just taking my meds.

Resolved Question: Why would others get so mad at me for being approved for disability so quickly?
(Fri, 01 Jan 2010 16:39:59 GMT)
Some people got mad when I mentioned it to them at a local mental health support center. One guy started using the F word, and said he has been trying for 4 years and still doesn't have disability. Do you think it's unusual that I got approved so quickly? I was in a group home for a month and a half. I spent two and a half months in a psychiatric hospital since this summer. I nearly died from a suicide attempt two novembers ago. Two and a half years ago I cut my arms and had to get 56 stitches. I've also been to many psychiatrists, psychologists, and I got kicked out of a university for having a crying spell at a mental health clinic before giving a speech for a public speaking class. It seems that my disability claim looked at all of these places. Why would others get so mad at me for being approved for disability so quickly? I've also been diagnosed with schizoeffective disorder, bi polar and borderline personality disorder. No I wasn't bragging. I figured they all had disability since they went to the mental health group.

Resolved Question: PLEASE READ!! IF YOU HAVE HAD 3&4YR. OLDS AND THEY EVER GOT OUT OF CONTROL OR NOT LISTENED!?
(Tue, 29 Dec 2009 17:07:28 GMT)
I HAVE 6 KIDS IN TOTAL AND I HAVE HAD MY SHARE OF HARD TIMES WITH NOT LISTENING, BUT THESE TWO HAVE DEFEATED ME!! THE 4YR. OLD IS THE BOY OF A B\G SET OF TWINS. THE OTHER IS THE 3YR. OLD BOY, HE'S THE SECOND TO LAST BEFORE A 1 YR. OLD GIRL. THAT LEAVES MY 10 YR OLD GIRL AND 15 YR. OLD BOY(MAN). I RECENTLY POSTED THAT I WAS LOOKING FOR DIFFERENT WAYS TO SETTLE MY 3 YR. OLD DOWN AND I GOT ANGRY RESPONDS, WHICH I AGREE WITH MOST OF! MY 4 YR. OLD BOY IS ON ADDERAL IN THE AM, HE HAS ADHD AND AUTISM, WHICH WAS JUST DIAGNOSED, SO I DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT IT! HE ISN'T REAL BAD WITH SYSTEMS ONLY NOT BEING SOCIAL WITH KIDS AT PRE SCHOOL, ACTUALLY HE REALLY ONLY PLAYS WITH HIS TWIN, THEY HAVE BEEN JOINED AT THE HIP SINCE BIRTH! NOW, THE PROBLEMS WITH HIM ARE NOT LISTENING AND DOING THINGS EVEN THOUGH HE KNOWS NOT TO IE; HITTING HIS LITTLE BROTHER, TRYING TO FIX ELECTRICAL THINGS(WHICH HE IS REALLY GOOD AT, BUT HE IS TOO YOUNG TO PLUG THINGS IN AND TAKE THEM APART) AND NOT EATING! THE 3 YR. OLD IS ONLY ON CLONIDINE FOR SLEEP, FROM WHAT I HAVE SEEN AND READ IT SEEMS FAIRLY SAFE, AND HIS SLEEP HAS IMPROVED WHICH HELPS WITH HIS BEHAVIOR SINCE HE WAS ONLY GETTING 3-4HRS A DAY AND COULD WALK STRAIGHT BECAUSE HE WAS SO TIRED BUT COULD STAY ASLEEP. HIS PROBLEMS BEHAVIORALLY ARE HITTING, BITING, PINCHING,ETC THE KIDS AT PRE SCHOOL, RUNNING OF IN PARKING LOTS AND STREETS,AND STORES, NOT STAYING IN HIS CAR SEAT(WHICH MAKES TAKING HIM ANYWHERE A LONG BATTLE BECAUSE WE HAVE TO PULL OVER EVERY BLOCK!!) THEY BOTH HAVE SASS MOUTHS LIKE NO!!, HATE, SHUT UP< AND THESE ARE NOT THE WORST AND ALL OF US MAKE IT A POINT TO NOT SAY THOSE THINGS, BUT THEY HEAR SHUT UP SOMEWHERE AND IT BECOMES THEIR FAVORITE WORD FOR THE DAY! I TRY NOT TO REACT, WE GO TO CHURCH(SOMETIMES, BUT THEY GET KICK OUT OF NURSERY AND SUNDAY SCHOOL), WE GO TO THE YMCA(SO THEY CAN GET OUT OF THE HOUSE AND RUN OF ENERGY) BUT SOMETIMES WE HAVE TO LEAVE BECAUSE OF THEIR BEHAVIOR,. THEY GO TO PRE SCHOOL AND WORK WITH SPEECH THERAPISTS BECAUSE THEY HAVE SPEECH DELAYS OR DISABILITIES AND DELAYED MOTOR SKILLS. THEY HAVE AN IEP, WHICH MEANS THEY NEED HELP WITH THEIR LEARNING AND THEY JUST GOT ON SSI SO SOON THEY WILL HAVE MORE HELP ESPECIALLY WITH THEIR SPEECH. I'M SURE THAT HAS A LOT TO DO WITH IT, THEY GET FRUSTRATED BECAUSE NO ONE UNDERSTANDS THEM AND I TRY TO MAKE THEM USE THEIR WORDS AND PRAY FOR MORE PATIENTS BUT IT'S CAUSING A TERRIBLE PROBLEM WITH THE REST OF THE FAMILY!(MY HUSBAND SPENT THE NIGHT AT HIS MOM'S CUZ HE WAS SCARED HE WAS GONNA LOSE IT) I DON'T LIKE TO WAKE UP AND DREAD ANOTHER DAY OF THE SAME OLE THING AND I TRY TO CHANGE THINGS, I QUIT DRINKING 18MONS AGO!! IT JUST SEEMS LIKE WHEN IT STARTS TO GET BETTER AND OUR ROUTINE IS GOING SMOOTHER SOMETHING HAPPENS THAT SHAKES IT UP, TRIPS TO THE HOSPITAL FOR STITCHES CUZ ONE OF THEM JUMPED OFF SOMETHING OR THINGS LIKE THAT! PLEASE GIVE ME SOME IDEAS THAT WORK FOR YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW CUZ SHORT OF READING 4 BOOKS, 1 BEING 123 MAGIC, ANOTHER HOW TO RAISE A DISCIPLINED CHILD AND A COUPLE ADHD AND AUTISM BOOKS, I AM RUNNING OUT OF OPTIONS AND I THINK MAYBE IT'S THAT I'M A BAD PARENT AND MAYBE SOMEONE ELSE IS BETTER SUITED!? SORRY IT WENT ON SO LONG BUT I REALLY DON'T TALK TO ANYONE ABOUT THIS(WHO WANTS TO LISTEN ABOUT MY KIDS NOT BEHAVING!)SO I END UP WRITING SCATTERED CUZ MY THOUGHTS ARE GOING FASTER THAN MY FINGERS! THANK YOU FOR READING THIS AND I PRAYED FOR SOME ANSWERS AND FOR THE STRENGTH TO DO GOD'S WILL SO, GOD BLESS.

Voting Question: Is it possible for someone with a learning disability in mathematics to become a health professional?
(Wed, 23 Dec 2009 22:51:44 GMT)
I have dyscalculia, which effects my math skills, cognition, spatial reasoning, and ability to follow patterns. I can do math and get the right answer, but it takes me longer than most. Where someone may be able to answer a math problem in 1 minute, it would take me around 4 or 5 minutes. I'm in college now and majoring in speech pathology and audiology and want to get my doctorate in audiology to become a clinical audiologist. Since my disability was documented I've been able to receive special treatment with math classes, such as free tutoring and extended time for quizzes/exams in a private room. I just finished my first semester as a full time college student and did a college-level math course (not remedial, but not college algebra) and got a B in it. I still have to take statistics and college algebra. I'm sure I'll be able to pass the classes as long as I continue to be allowed the accommodations, but once I actually get into my clinical phase and have to be there without special treatment, how badly will my learning disability effect me? Will I still be able to function as an audiologist? Would it be easier (i.e. less math) to become a speech pathologist instead? Or just something totally not health related?

Voting Question: Do I seem unintelligent or slow?
(Wed, 23 Dec 2009 10:06:13 GMT)
I have a question in regards to my mental efficiency. As a child I was diagnosed as having ADHD along with a learning disability in math, which I know commonly occurs alongside ADHD. My learning disability has had a major impact on my self esteem. Sometimes I find myself pondering as to whether or not my learning disability entails that I am slow. I was with a friend of mine about a year ago, just sitting in the bed room watching television and listening to music, and while doing so I happened to hear an ex friend of mine talking to him on the phone, well I made an attempt to say something humorous, which I realize now was not, and afterwards I heard her say that he's a little slow. In my opinion I think back then she was having a great deal of difficulty of dealing with the fact that her intellectual ability and intelligence was dwindling due to prolonged drug use and thus she felt the need to place her shame onto someone else, but remember that my opinion is only subjective, so I could be wrong. I don't understand how I could be below average intelligence or slow when I am interested in the following: -Philosophy (Nihilism and Existentialism) -Psychology -Criminology -Certain aspects of Astronomy -Composing music (In the process of acquiring the prerequisite knowledge) -Computer Science (I have completed *Intro To Computer Hardware and *Intro To Computer Networking with a 4.0 GPA) People in high school assumed that I was slow due to the fact that I did not talk much. Although, my poverty of speech was a consequence of Severe Social Anxiety. I really would like some honest opinions here. Otherwise I will drive myself insane, constantly questioning my intelligence and potential as a human being. When responding to this post, please take the extra time to explain how you reached your conclusion.
