Open Question: Do J1 visa holders pay SDI (state disability insurance) in San Francisco?
(Thu, 09 Sep 2010 11:19:17 GMT)
Hi,
I am a J1 visa holder for a tourism and hospitality internship in San Francisco. My employer suggests that I should sing up for SDI and pay a SDI tax in all my paychecks. Even though I am not going to be able to benefit from it (since I can not get a PFL or claim support for losing job or becoming disabled) do I have to sing up and pay for it?
Besides, according to regulations for J1, I already purchased an insurance which is going to cover me during my internship in US.
Thank you in ad

Resolved Question: Problem with my employees?
(Tue, 07 Sep 2010 20:20:55 GMT)
I used to own a clothing factory in the United States, but in 1999 I moved the plant to Malaysia so that I could pay the workers less and earn more money. It went well for a while but now the workers are starting to get communist ideas. Some people who don't know they're talking about call it a "sweatshop" but its actually a nice place to work. They want a raise to $4 an hour (a 150% raise!), disability and health insurance, lunch and bathroom breaks, and to be able to unionize. Plus, the loca

Voting Question: If given the choice, would you forgo your company's benefits in return for a higher salary?
(Sat, 04 Sep 2010 04:55:07 GMT)
And if people were given a choice, do you most people would be responsible and actually buy things like medical insurance, disability insurance, unemployment insurance, and invest in a retirement plan (in lieu of social seurity, state disability, state unemployment, etc)?
To clarify, I mean company benefits along with government benefits.

I decided to ask this question again and add more details . . due to some of the answers posted I realized I needed to be more thorough.
I never requested child support for our two boys since the divorce in 2008 but since I lost my job and medical insurance for the boys things have been tough financially. I have supported our boys 100% financially and my ex had never contributed or helped out. I, myself had been working for the last 9 years at the same employer. The company is no longer in

Resolved Question: Can a college require therapy before they'll provide accommodations?
(Tue, 24 Aug 2010 23:43:40 GMT)
I would like to talk to my college disability office about disability accommodation for my anxiety disorder. However I'm concerned because they state on their website that "many disorders can be controlled with medication and/or psychotherapy so that they do not constitute a disability." I'm worried they'll say I'm not in therapy so they won't provide an accommodation.
I can't afford therapy right now. The on-campus health center does not provide on-going therapy. Our insurance doesn't pr

Voting Question: Not returning to work after giving birth?
(Fri, 20 Aug 2010 16:09:42 GMT)
My wife recently gave birth to our first daughter. Originally she had all intentions of returning to work after her birth, but there have been a few complications that have made us change our minds. My question is, can her employer require her to repay the insurance premiums that they paid on her behalf, and what about the short term disability she received, would she be responsible for paying it back? We live in a "right to work" state by the way.

Is it all a plan by Big Pharm sponsored groups of psychiatrists and mental health professionals to create a phony diagnosis to generate revenue by influencing teachers / parents to single out hyperactive boys because they are too lazy to innovate different learning methods as well as actually play physical games with their boys that don't involve some technological babysitter?
Genetic studies show that ADHD is linked with being male (boys are four to ten times more likely to get this diagnos

Resolved Question: Why won't my husband use his degree? (I really will pick a best answer)?

He does work, full-time, as a server/assistant manager at a restaurant that he has been employed at since he was senior in high school (going on 8 years ago). He makes decent money at this job, probably more than he would if he used his degree, however, there are no benefits, no guarantee of a specific wage (he works for tips) AND we racked up over $40,000 in debt (college

I bought long term disability insurance, I was hurt at work and denied workmans comp. I filed a claim with the short and long term disability. I was approved for state disability, and they paid me back from the time I was hurt. Now the long term disability wants their money back. I also have a law suit against the workers comp insurance. Shouldn't the long term disability only get their money back if I win the workers comp. case?

I don't get government assistance because I make too much. My husband has since moved out of state and has had a child with another woman. I've worked for a university for the past six months. I worked for campus dining January-May and now I work for an auditorium. I don't get many hours, and I thought the amount being taken out was just because it was for the school until I realized how much was really being taken out. Basically, 1/3 of my check is being taken out. For example, I had 8.1 hours my last payperiod and made 64.80. I had taxes taken out for:
Medicare ($0.94)
Old Age Survivers Disability Insurance (OASDI) Tax ($4.02)

It has paid claims beautifully and even bought her a Wii Fit because her physical therapist letter of recommendation confirmed that the kids will use the Wii Fit much better than they will climb the "stairs to nowhere", or any other
