Open Question: College student needs to move out asap to save my future. Need advice please?
(Sun, 21 Mar 2010 06:10:19 GMT)
With every passing day, my controlling parents are trying to make me (19 yrs old) quit my jobs and take less credit hours at school. I cried so bad today on the freeway while driving because I can't sleep at night (they are 150% disrespectful) and won't turn the TV down and wouldn't let me out of the house to go to work. I'm on scholarships, am working 3 good jobs on campus and have great networking at my university. We have zero dorms/housing on campus. I'm on scholarships & I work 25hrs a week and I don't give my abusive family a dime anymore. I will call child protective services if I leave so they can keep an eye on my kid brother's safety. I'm a media major and I've already bought a desktop, laptop, camera, and some other equipment and have bought necessities in personal areas. I am planning to apply for food stamps. I live in Michigan and I used their calculator online and they said my 6G income doesn't count as income to them because the university paid me. So I can get roughly $200 a month in food stamps. A car. That's what's holding me up. A bus is not an option because it's not safe where I live and I'd be alone. How does one buy a car... dealership or craigslist or ? I am leaning toward a Honda Civic, Fit or Accord. I'd take out federal loans to pay for furniture and few months rent and I'd use my income this summer (I already have jobs) to pay these loans in a savings account. I have insurance because of a car accident that left me disabled (neck and back), but I never went ahead and applied for Disability with the state even though an ortho gave me a letter to do so. Should I register or not?

Open Question: no w2-how do i do my taxes?
(Sat, 20 Mar 2010 20:29:20 GMT)
my employer is dopey--but nice--the best employer i ever had... the problem is--i was out of work on disability and received income from state disability insurance.. the employer is supposed to report this on a w2 my employer didn't even know the state had a disability program.. i told them about it and that they needed to provide a w2..they can't understand.. i gave them the contact him for the disability program...but they still haven't sent the w2.. what do i do it i don't get the w2 by 4/15? i don't think i owe any taxes--or get a refund--but the issue is that because my income is above the level needed to require taxes to be filed..i need to file THEY ARE REQUIRED TO REPORT IT ON A W2---this is confirmed--they just don't understand how to do it..

Open Question: Used to be on SSI Disability assistance, now joining US ARMY.?
(Fri, 19 Mar 2010 00:46:44 GMT)
I'm 22 and used to be on SSI Disability, I had some teen angst and one night I was jumped, stabbed multiple times, beaten with a club, robbed, and messed up really bad. There was no drug involvement on my part at least, I just managed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, some guys messed with me and I stood up for myself instead of simply ignoring them. I didn't have a job at the time or health insurance, so I turned to the advice of family and applied for SSI for my medical bills, prescriptions, and such. In the past couple years I have made a full recovery, can work and function just fine. Now I'm planning on joining the Army. The thing is, I'm 100% sure that I'm going to be asked if I've ever been on disability in the past when going through MEPS. I was planning on just saying what I had already stated here and seeing what happens, though I've been told before that I should just say no, seeing as how I don't have any pins or plates and it'll just make the process longer. How would MEPS handle a YES on that particular question? I don't even know most of the names of any doctors I've seen in the past or anyone really from the SSI office or even if they still have any record on hand, or if I was purged out of the system... so off the top of my head I only can say the reason why I took that route. I'm unsure of the process involved and I'd like to have a much clearer picture of it before MEPS in order to be prepared and have anything ready to speed the entrance process along. Any first hand insight would be much appreciated.

Voting Question: Will Government-Run Health Insurance Pay Claims as Well as Our Personal Health Insurance?
(Wed, 17 Mar 2010 21:52:00 GMT)
My child has a permanent disability and is covered under a personal health insurance plan that I purchased before she was born. It provides excellent coverage and cannot be canceled unless I fail to pay the premiums or the company pulls completely out of my state. It has paid claims beautifully and even bought her a Wii Fit because her physical therapist letter of recommendation confirmed that the kids will use the Wii Fit much better than they will climb the "stairs to nowhere", or any other conventional form of PT. I can confirm my child prefers the Wii Fit "a thousand times more than the old therapies". Also, her multiple surgeries have been completely paid without a hitch and her orthopedic surgeon said he really likes my company's reimbursement policies. He commented that the Medicaid patients pay him very slowly and at a much lower rate and requires far, far more documentation. In the event ObamaCare becomes the law of the land, how can supporters assure me that they will not affect private insurance companies ability to survive in under the Senate plan that may be passed under simple majority or "deem as passed"? Would the government run health care we will receive 4 or 5 years after the taxes begin likely pay her claims as well as our current personal health insurance plan? Carole, I have read highlights of the Senate plan that Nancy Pelosi wants to pass under "deem as passed" without the Constitutionally required vote of both Houses and found it infinitely more complicated and difficult to understand than my 24 page private insurance policy. Nina, I have read the one paragraph in my policy that outlines the three reasons they are able to drop her. Again, the only way they will drop her is if I fail to pay the premiums, she exceeds the $5 million lifetime benefit, or if UHC completely withdraws from my state. They will not summarily drop her for any other reason. We have confirmed this with a lawyer.

Resolved Question: Should I cut my parents off?
(Mon, 15 Mar 2010 06:37:11 GMT)
My dad quit his extremely high paying job as a corporate VP in 2007 for no real reason, and had to bring money to the table to sell the awesome house he had, in a buyer's market (it finally sold in 2009) -- the house was totally paid off, BTW, my parents could have stayed there for almost no monthly fee (just the HOA). He decided to move himself, my mother, and my disabled brother to a retirement community in another state (where I also happened to be moving), where there were no potential jobs. I try to love my mother, but she's always been a physically, verbally, emotionally, and mentally abusive drunk who smokes chains of cigarettes. She never worked because she said she was too sick, but we know for a fact that she was making herself sick with her addictions. They both used to use recreational drugs in irresponsible excess. My parents moved into a house they couldn't afford, in this retirement community with no job prospects for either of them, when they were still in their early 50s. I don't know how they figured they'd be able to make ends meet on my dad's pension, the math doesn't even make sense, but I wasn't smart enough back then to realize their folly. They didn't consult with a lawyer or an accountant. My little brother is high-functioning autistic (has Aspberger's syndrome and a seizure condition), he lives with them. He gets social security disability money every month, and my mother takes it and spends it on groceries and, mostly, wine for herself. None of them have health insurance. I got a joint bank account with the parents so that I could transfer funds to them if they needed me to do so. As it stands now, I've given them over $3000 of my federal student loans (I'm in school), and I will never see that money again. The IRS levied the joint account when they failed to pay their taxes on the house sale and my dad's pension. I just faxed the info to the IRS recently to prove I had control over the account and no money came from my parents. Levy will be removed soon. I will get a new account. I'm moving out of the state we live in, even though my autistic brother still lives with them. My mother won't sop drinking and abusing my father, and my father wants me to get a townhouse where I'm moving so that they can all live with me. He sends me articles about how baby boomers live with their adult kids these days to merge resources, even though he wouldn't be able to bring money to the table to help me out (his entire pension is tied up in his house, a car, and his IRS payment schedule). He plays on my guilt a lot and tries to convince me that what he's asking is somehow normal. I'm not even 30, and they're not even 60. I feel like I'm being taken advantage of. They've been making my life more difficult than it has to be for a long time, by both their irresponsibility and their abuse, and I'm tempted to cut them off, with the possibility of extracting my brother from the situation soon after I'm out. Am I wrong? Is dealing with parents like this normal, and I'm just a selfish, ungrateful son? Do you beat your children, too, Crystal? Do you steal their money and buy booze with it? Crystal, I just read an answer you gave for a question asking about an abusive mother, you gave the opposite response. Stop using all caps and start exercising logical consistency.

Resolved Question: can you recieve Medicaid in the state of Georgia without having any kids and only having a...?
(Thu, 11 Mar 2010 20:17:35 GMT)
...minor disability? I do have insurance through my restaurant job, but they only give me about 20 hrs or less at 7.20/ hour and by the time they take out my premium for my insurance and regular taxes they take. I can't afford to pay the 40.00 copay to go to physical therapy i'm suppose to be having for my back pain. The therapist thinks i might have facet joint pain, but isn't sure yet. They told me at dfacs that i had to have kids to get medicaid or be completely disabled in order to get medicaid is this true for the state of georgia? I do have a right arm that's partially atrophied but it's not causing me any problems right now, and like i said i do work, but if i wasn't living with my family i'd be homeless or starving with what I make.

Resolved Question: WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR RETIREMENT BENEFITS? Pension under the Employment Retirement Income Security Act of 1974?
(Thu, 11 Mar 2010 09:03:31 GMT)
My father, 51, had been an hourly worker in a machine shop of for 21 years and four months. On a Christmas holiday, he suffered a severe heart attack and was hospitalized for three weeks. At his release, his doctor said he was to rest at home for a couple of months. After his recuperation period, his doctor, along with his company’s physicians, was to decide whether or not my father should retired for disability reasons. They never got the opportunity to make this decision; in February, my father died of a second heart attack. He left my mother, four sons, two daughters and two-daughters in-law. His wife, my mother, still had four children at home. As part of my father's estate, my mother received the normal group insurance payments, the balance of his savings plan account, and the other benefits due her. However, my mother did not receive a pension from the company as a survivor of an eligible employee. When my mother and the company representatives had discussed the settlement, my mother had inquired about my father's pension and about my mother's right to receive it. The human resource department had stated that since contributions to this fund were made only by the company, no survivor’s benefits were provided. 1.What do you think my mother should do at this point? 2.What does the Employment Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 have to say about this issue?

Resolved Question: If living in Illinois can someone who is disabled get on state medical insurance if they cannot work?
(Thu, 04 Mar 2010 20:36:25 GMT)
I am moving back to Illinois and I have kids of my own and know that I most likely could get on some type of Medical Assistance until I get set in a full-time job but my mom was wanting to go and she is my only real support system right at this point. Can people on disability with no job get health insurance through the state? My mom said they couldn't but my kids dad's mom who has sickle cell and she doesn't work, her sister is also on disability and only has a physical handicap. I'm just wondering if someone who is on disability can get medical care in Illinois.

Resolved Question: California Worker's Comp/UEF case settled via C & R. Do I still have a civil remedy available to me?
(Thu, 04 Mar 2010 06:07:55 GMT)
The California Worker's Comp case I was involved in was actually both a Worker's Comp AND an Uninsured Employer's Fund case (boss didn't have insurance when I was injured). So, after just shy of three years of BS with the Worker's Comp and Uninsured Employer's Trust departments of the California government, I "capitulated," and signed a Compromise and Release to settle my case. Because it was an Uninsured Employer's Trust case, my case never became an "accepted case" until right before it was settled. That meant I did not receive ANY subsistence pay for THREE YEARS. No retraining possible due to advanced degree and physical status. My attorney left any civil options open-ended, subject to the statute of limitations, I would imagine. My question is - do I have a case for pain and suffering? Or some other civil remedy? What I mean is this: I recently got Social Security Disability, and the Social Security judge, in his ruling, took my *date of disability* back to my *date of injury* (the one that generated the worker's comp/UEF bull, and the one for which my former boss wasn't insured). Wasn't exactly sure why he would do that, unless it was to facilitate my further legal recourse (?) against my former boss. I'm on a bunch of pills everyday so I can function "without pain" (right), and the only good thing I can say about the "settlement" from the State of California''s many Departments and Divisions that became involved is that it is finally OVER. I was treated poorly. And am interested in pursuing it to any further conclusion possible against my former boss. Any input or insight would be gratefully received. Failing that, I'd like the name of a TOTAL PITBULL of an accident attorney in the Sacramento, California area. Thanks. Hmmm....I guess I need to elucidate further, although I attempted to sort of glaze over the harsh reality of it all. Here's the crux of my question: My (former) boss BROKE THE LAW by not having the required worker's comp insurance. And because he broke the law, I was unable to receive much-needed medical attention. I had the County Medical Service Plan (my doctor wouldn't return me to work and I had no $ coming in). I was grateful for what I was given, but that doesn't relieve the pain that I am under constantly, that might have been relieved if I had been afforded the appropriate medical care. In my C & R, where it says no further worker's comp issues would remain for litigation. But my lawyer inserted verbage that EXCLUDED "...L.C. 132a, and any potential civil claims" from the C & R. So I guess I should ring up an attorney. To those of you that were badly treated by "The System," the stats are against usl. Numbers don't lie. I'd still like a TOTAL PITBULL'S number. ;

Resolved Question: How do I find out if I qualify for Social Security disability?
(Thu, 04 Mar 2010 04:35:50 GMT)
I am a 21 year old male. I have severe scoliosis and was born with an extra vertebrae in the middle of my spine which has a naturally occurring scar and bump to prove it. I had no idea I had the extra vertebrae or scoliosis till I was 15 and got my first physical and was sent to OHSU (Oregon health and sciences university) to get a shot of radioactive isotopes and then a heat scan of my spine. I have always had back pains from standing, sitting, laying, walking and even just breathing from time to time. It effects my ability to work very much. I have a 1 year old son with my girlfriend from high school who works and does school. I try to get a regular job but they always ask if I can lift or move over 30 pounds easily which is always no.... or they can you stand and/or sit for long periods of time which is also no. I have never had medical insurance so I have no way of seeing a doctor unless I go to the E.R. again and get a $6,000 bill for xrays and shots and pain killers (Which I never take cuz it masks the pain and when it wears off its always worse.. not to mention expensive out of pockets with just my girlfriend working). I have never used the state or government for money help ever, but I am at a loss of how to support my family till we can figure out my spinal deformity and its obtrusive continuous pain. Anyone that knows anything about Social Security Disability and how to determine if I even qualify or what to do please help, your answers will be greatly appreciated.

Resolved Question: If you got into an auto accident?
(Mon, 01 Mar 2010 22:23:35 GMT)
You got into an auto accident and no one got a ticket but, you used someones car, there was no insurance, and that person was legally disabled. The state sent them a letter saying they had to turn in their license and tags. The person filed an appeal and the state did not take the license or tags but, the person with the disability cannot renew their tags due to the accident that the other person had in her car. That person needs the vehicle for Doctor's appointments for her and her Mother who has MS. They live in a small town where there is no public transportation and no one to transport them. Is there any exemption for that person so she can get the tags for her vehicle? She is on SSi and cannot afford an attorney and legal aide said they do not handle cases like that. The insurance company totaled the other persons vehicle when it only had a dent in the rear passengers door for $10,000.00. I have searched the web all day and cannot find a thing. I live in Texas but, she lives in Iowa. Legal advice would sure be appreciated. I don't know how to help her. Thanks. She didn't have insurance becaue the car had a mechanical problem and she could not afford, at the time, to repair it. So, in order not to pay insurance for the car that didn't work and was sitting, she let it lapse. She has a van she can use. Now, she cannot get tags for either one of them.

Resolved Question: Boyfriend on California State Disability, employer putting him on COBRA is that legal?
(Mon, 01 Mar 2010 17:51:40 GMT)
My boyfriend, was in a motorcycle accident on Aug.30 broken his wrist and cracked his pelvis. He had surgery on the wrist in Sept. and the pelvis is healed. The boyfriend is a reginal truck driver and worked for the company for 2 years. The doctor projected he would be back in Jan. but there were complications. He has nerve damage in his pinkie and ring finger and part of his hand. They are doing surgery for that on March 19. His company is now saying they have to put him on a COBRA plan. The HR-dispatcher guy called on Friday and I just talked to him this morning didn't get much out of him. My boyfriend has given the company permission to give me information. We have lived together for 12+ months. I'm so confused can they do that. They were paying all of his payment for the last 6 month. When he was working he paid his share of around $20. They said they would cover his share to be "nice". We have got nothing in writing ever from his company. THis HR person is not the brightest and I have any many run ins with this person. This person also made the comment about how if my boyfriend had been working the accident would not have happen. My boyfriend is a trucker driver. He had all ready reached his max or more for the week of hours and this guy wanted him to drive illegally and on my guy's day off. He is just a jerk and only cares about himself. Anyway the HR guys is saying that they were only supposed to offer insurance coverage for 3 months.Apparently now the company is getting Audited and is in trouble for covering 6 months. The HR guy would not give me any more information and said a 3rd party COBRA person will call me. So, I need advice on what to do. My boyfriend can did insurance through my work as a domestic partner it is around $79 a month but it will take time. He is still employed they said he is on a leave. i thought cobra was when you are no longer emplyed by the company.

Resolved Question: How can I turn this around?
(Sat, 27 Feb 2010 05:10:36 GMT)
I lost my job because I got very sick (16 hospitalizations in 1 year) am currently disabled, but not yet on disability, can't physically work. was homeless for months, now I rent a room for $400 a month and have to resort to illegal things just to get that paid. I am currently being evicted because I just can't raise the rent money. This is the B.S, I've been dealing with, but this is not the most crushing problem. I am a father of 2 really wonderful teenage girls. I haven't had the money for child support since all this started happening and my ex is finally fed up enough to file with the state. As I understand it, when I go before the court the govt is going to send me to jail for nonpayment of child support, which will only make me homeless again and will continue to be UNABLE to pay. Please understand, that although this is unhealthy to say...I don't care about myself. I care about my girls. During these last years I have failed them. My oldest is about to go to college and I can't even keep a roof over my head, let alone support her needs. We are really really close, talk all the time and I truly love them with all my heart. I am so depressed I considered borrowing money to get life insurance and then killing myself so they would have a good start in their lives, but won't because I know how bad the emotional damage would be to them and would never, could never hurt them by doing so. This isn't about my depression and I'm not gonna suicide out. What can I possibly do to become stable again so I can give them the money they deserve? Is there an organization that can help? Is there something I can do from home to make enough money to help them? I live in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. Any ideas would be appreciated. Although I am severely depressed, I had been an outstanding sales person for many, many years before my downfall and still have a sharp mind and used to be considered a natural leader. I just can't walk or stand for too long now.

Resolved Question: Why is Obama ignoring the fact that the greatest health care concern facing America really is?
(Wed, 24 Feb 2010 23:59:41 GMT)
Why is Obama ignoring the fact that the greatest health care concern facing America really is the fact that untold millions of people need or will be needing long term care which at the moment costs upward of $ 12,000 per month per person & health care insurance + medicare coverage only allow for the first 90 days of this long term care ? After health care insurance + Medicare ( which is for those on disability as well as for seniors ) long term care benefits expire after the first 90 days, the resident is required to pay privately for their long term care and once their life savings are depleted ( which frequently happens rapidly at a cost of $ 10,000- $12,000 per month ) then Medicaid ( not Medicare ) kicks in costing Federal/State Government $ 10,000-$12,000 per month every month for every long term care resident. Why is Obama failing to address this increasing need for long term care which, through Medicaid, is becoming the greatest, single, ever increasing expense for federal/state government after long term care has already bankrupted the long term care resident ? ruth - You are wrong. First of all many people ( not all of whom are seniors ) in long term care facilities require more skilled medical/nursing care than can be provided at home. Secondly, how many people do you know who, regardless of their age, have sufficient assets ( with no ongoing earned income ) enabling them to pay $ 12,000 monthly for years ? At an annual cost of $ 144,000 in 3 years time that would amount to over $ 500,000 What happens after these monies are depleted ? Who is supposed to pay for these long term care costs? We are not talking about whether granny should get a hip replacement at 79 ; we are talking about how to pay for grannys $ 144,000 + annual Nursing Home bill for the next 10 years ? gws35 -While I agree with a lot of what you say the fact is that millions that already need or will be needing long term care don't have long term care insurance or disability insurance and they still need long term care and.........that is exactly what Obama has failed to address......... PATRICK - Thanks for the insightful & brilliant answer. BTW - You can add the disabled ( alcoholic, mentally ill, etc. ) who also wind up in long term care facilities.

Resolved Question: What to do if your employer does not pay you?
(Sat, 20 Feb 2010 17:22:30 GMT)
My mom works for a company in Chicago where she assists the elder and people with disabilities. The company has not paid her in two months, every time she stops by to drop off her paper work she asks when will she get paid, they state there is no money to pay the employers. She is struggling terribly and the only thing that is saving her is the fact that my dad works and he can pay for the bills for now. Her car insurance payment is due this week and she cannot afford to pay for it and will be force to drive without insurance; my dad does not have the extra money to help. It is also very difficult to have any extra money when they are putting two children through college. My mom only gets paid $8.25, she does not go out and find another job because she is 55 years old and it is very difficult to find one. So if anyone has any advise on what can be done please help.

Resolved Question: Do any of you conservatives that complain about liberalism benefit from any of these liberal achievments?
(Sat, 20 Feb 2010 16:38:59 GMT)
Interstate Highway System Almost all of our Labor Laws (and All Child Labor laws) The Marshall Plan Environmental Laws Freedom of Information Act Workplace safety laws Social Security The Space Program Securities Act of 1933 & Most banking Regulations The Peace Corps Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) The Civil rights movement Fight against Nazis, Fascism and Totalitarianism Wilson, FDR ,Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy. All liberals The Development and Deployment for the Internet (DARPA/HPCA) The Tennessee Valley project Women's right to vote Universal Public Education National Weather Service National Science Foundation/Basic Scientific Research Product Labeling/Truth in Advertising Laws Public Health Service and CDC Morrill Land Grant Act (land for State public Universities) Rural Electrification Public Universities Bank Deposit Insurance Earned Income Tax Credit Family and Medical Leave Act Consumer Product Safety Commission Public Broadcasting Hoover Dam Pell Grants Americans With Disabilities Act State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) And before you say these were liberal achievments you approve of from the past and that you just don't like TODAY'S Liberalism I'll point out to you that it's the SAME ideology. You conservatives are fighting against us now just like you were in many of the achievments mentioned above. You might want to remember that before you go on another hateful ignorant tirade about how liberalism has never been of any value to our country.

Voting Question: I am on disability and have been since October, 2009.?
(Fri, 19 Feb 2010 12:54:30 GMT)
I am under the care of two doctors. I have tried to search the internet and also contacted a couple of lawyers and no one has gotten back to me. My question is this....can my employer withhold my disability checks? They are "self-insured" and they have an insurance company who reviews the claims and state whether the payments are to continue or not? This insurance company sends me letters and calls me constantly and asks me all kinds of questions, like they are trying to trip me up or something. It doesn't seem to me that they can hold or stop my disability payments as long as I am under doctor's care. I live in Pennsylvania.

Resolved Question: How do you get forward in life when you're in bad position?
(Wed, 17 Feb 2010 05:57:07 GMT)
I think me and every twenty something year old is going through the same problem. Is it just the economic times or did I do something wrong? I graduated high school in 2007 with a good GPA and high SAT scores. I was not allowed to work during high school because my parents just wanted me to focus on my education. I also got my beginner's permit my senior year because I needed it for my driver's ed class. So, comes my senior year of school and my parents divorced. My dad moves away and I'm stuck with a mentally unstable mother-not just saying that-she is diagnosed, and my 3 younger and 1 older siblings. I would've loved to work that summer and get my actual license but had to stay and help watch the younger kids. It also didn't help that my mom always was "too busy" to take me to the DMV or just flat out didn't want to, and was too busy trying to find a replacement husband. I sat around the house and decided that I should go to college. I moved out Jan 2008 and started school with absolutely NO support from my parents. I lived on campus and mooched off of everybody. I had no money or transportation anywhere. Whenever there was a break I had to stay with my roommate because my mom wouldn't come get me. (She got a new boyfriend who hates all her children and I'm not "allowed" to ride in his vehicles.) On top of that I'm an art major and I need supplies and things but I need a ride to Hobby Lobby to get them so when I do get random money from a friend or my dad 6 states away sends me like $50 every 3 months I have to pay someone gas money to take me to Hobby Lobby and use the rest for supplies. I've lived like this for 2 years. I hitched a ride back home (2 hours away from the college) during my first summer and got kicked out because her boyfriend said I was too grown to be there and the second summer she had given my room to my younger siblings so I had to share a room with a 5 and a 17 year old. During either of those summers I never made it to the DMV or to get a job. We don't have a computer at her house so there was no putting applications in online and she never felt like driving us anywhere unless we had "gas money"... I returned to school August 2010 and it just got to the point where I was tired of being a mooch. I borrow everything from tampons to shampoo to pencils. I was miserable. I just sat in my dorm room everyday because I didn't have money to go be social. I got a college refund and lived off of $400 from October and I'm finally down to $9. I couldn't stand it. I decided to quit school not too long ago. My grades were awesome and everything. I was in my first junior semester. Now I'm back in my hometown sneaking to live in a housing development with a sibling. I sleep on her couch and can’t move my things in. I HAVE to find a job because I have 6 months to return to school before the loans come back. And yes-I decided to go to a private college and get a good education which left me with Massive loans. Luckily for me I may have a job at a Burger King that's within walking distance from my new home cause ya know. I still have no license and even if I did, it’s not like I would be able to buy a car, pay for tags, and pay insurance every month. I can't even keep my prepaid phone on half the time. I'm shocked I even got the BK call back because I have NO work experience. If I don’t get this job idk what to do cause I’ve applied to everywhere in walking distance-that's all I'm limited too unless I want to dish out gas money that I don't have. And Bk money isn’t going to get me too far. I’m almost to the point of military or adult gigs. Military is out cause I have gauged ears and unless I get those surgically fixed it’s considered a disability and plus-military isn’t for everyone. (I’m a sewing, drawing, instrument playing, rainbow hair, metal and punk liking, artistic type, if you catch my drift.) I couldn’t be a stripper if I wanted to-can’t make it to the strip club. What do you do in this situation? I haven’t fucked up. I have no kids. I don’t drink at all. Never done drugs in my life. Grades are good-my teachers loved me and hated that I had to leave. No criminal record. I don’t spend money on ridiculous things like clothes and jewelry and shoes. No car-no license-no job. Barely a home. Do I get knocked up by some military brat? Do I sleep with some old guy? Any advice would be lovely. why would i want another loan? I'm $25,000 in debt now from college?

(Mon, 15 Feb 2010 12:26:46 GMT)
Does anyone work for Mass Health or Neighborhood Health Plan? I seriously need some help! I've been on both insurances for almost two years now, and I just got a letter in the mail from Mass Health stating that I have two insurances and they are cancelling the neighborhood health. I am bipolar, ADHD, I don't work, I collect Social Security Disability. I have all my preauth's for my meds on neighborhood health. Now they are saying they are cancelling it. I need help. I'm gonna call and E Maill them, but I want all kinds of answers. Why would they change me? Nothing changed? I collect the same money. I don't work. I'm still disabled. Why would they take my insurance away? Please help.

Resolved Question: Can my ex-husbands wife claim my son on her taxes?
(Wed, 10 Feb 2010 04:10:38 GMT)
My ex-husband and I have a separation agreement that was incorporated into our divorce. It states that we will claim my son on alternating years, however in the event my ex is exempt from filing, that I shall have the right to claim my son. I put this in the agreement because my ex receives social security disability and I knew the likelihood of him being required to file was low, so I tried to protect myself by putting a condition in our agreement. He remarried in 2009. This is his year to claim our son, IF HE IS NOT EXEMPT from filing. He had no income so when he and his new spouse filed taxes, they filed married filing separately and she claimed my son. My ex is not filing a return because he had no income. I am upset by the fact that she claimed my son. I did not release the exemption to her. And since my ex did not file his own return, I feel it is only fair that I claim my son. He spends equal time between us. I do provide greater support for him in that I carry health insurance, etc. I have a higher adjusted gross income than either of them. By reading the IRS rules it appears as though the IRS would rule in my favor. Could someone with some knowledge digest this and let me know if you feel the same way? I could understand if they would have been married filing jointly and had a reason to file. But with them filing separately and her claiming my son, I feel as though she is taking my legal right to the tax benefits of having a child. Thank you for taking the time to read/respond to my questions!

Resolved Question: Workers Compensation PD award amount?
(Thu, 04 Feb 2010 17:19:13 GMT)
I was wondering if someone could give me an estimate on how much I may be looking at for a Worker's Compensation Permanent Disability award (if I settle for a lump sum amount)? Work Situation Before Injury: I was a Line Cook that worked very hard. Involved constant movement, lifting and squatting. Was making around $350-$390 a week. Employee of the month. Would of gotten atleast 2-3 more raises in time it's been. Injury: I actually have two injuries but I am only concerned about my primary injury. Accident happened on January 12th 2007 (3 years ago). Slip and fall. Accident report was filled, went to doctor's office immediately. Everything has been filled, reported and done correctly. I sustained a shattered femur bone. It was a part that held my patella (knee cap) in place. I have had 2 surgeries attempting to correct problem. Gone through PT (physical therapy). Now making $200 a week from Worker's Comp checks from Insurance company. Doctor's Words: He feels that everything has been done to help the problem and no other medical assistance is needed. Has put in a PDR (Permanent Disability Rating) of 20% on Right leg/knee. I live in the state of NC. I just recently went to college. I am hoping to get some sort of reembursetment because I needed to take online college because I couldn't walk to classes. This situation should be over already but my lawyer is saying I need to wait for a final judgement on my shoulder (2nd injury) before finshing Knee injury. What do you think I should be intitled to? Do you think I could get reimbursement for college loans? Is it smarter to wait for final decision on 2nd injury before I resolve knee injury case? @mbrcatz That didn't answer that much. I wont be able to work at a job squatting or using my legs so they'll have to put me into a job. I'm not going to just have to "get another job, a desk job" as you so casually say. THEY will have to do that. Also, my lawyer hasn't kept me very well informed other wise I wouldn't be asking this question in the first place. Also, are you saying that every case ever in NC gets 300 weeks of partial and thats all they are intitled to? What about injuries that cause 90% of permanent disability and they need atleast 5-6 years just to talk again. Try not to be so vague please.

Resolved Question: Can you collect some sort of disability while pregnant and very sick?
(Mon, 01 Feb 2010 21:55:50 GMT)
I'm not pregnant but I am curious. If someone was pregnant and if their doctor places the pregnant woman on bed rest early in the pregnancy (3 months or so) is there some type of disability that can be collected? I'm not talking about through private insurance (short term disability) but anything from the state, etc.? And also, if the husband is working but it isn't enough, how would one survive paying bills? I just wonder cause this has to be a common occurence. Thanks My question doesn't pertain to someone who gets pregnant and who can't afford it. And i'm not asking for any social commentary. Everyone knows most people are just one paycheck away from being homeless. I'm asking what will happen if someone plans for a pregnancy and is prepared, but then gets a COMPLICATION (not forseen) and cannot work. I'm just curious.

Resolved Question: Am I responsible to pay erroneuosly recieved disability payments from Socail Security?
(Fri, 29 Jan 2010 16:33:48 GMT)
OK further on. I was on disability for a number of years due to on going health issues with my blood and my legs. I am no longer and have not received any benefit payments for over 2 years. I received a letter from Social Security stating that I had "erroneously" received payments from 2003 to 2007. With this they are saying I need to pay it back. The reason I was on disability is that I have been dealing with venal stasis ulcers for more than 25 years. I have had deep venal thrombosis in both legs and experienced a pulmonary embolism, major, in my right lung. Due to the thick blood it causes extreme swelling in my legs. This is ongoing even though I have chosen to return to the work force. My question is this: Can they take legal action, such as the US Marshal's coming in and taking all of our belongings to sell at an auction? This is something they do with the IRS at times. We do not have the money nor do I anticipate a way to get it. The money is gone as it is what we lived on and without the Medicare insurance I would never have received the care I needed in order to be where I am now. My disability was not physically noticeable, unless I wear shorts, so it is not a back injury nor a neck injury or anything else which hampers mobility. I simply can not remain on my feet for extended periods of time, nor can I remain seated either. I must sit with my feet elevated above my heart for at least 15 minutes every hour. Try explaining that to an employer. Any professional legal advice would be appreciated, with case supporting information of rulings. Thank you.

Voting Question: Health Care solution?
(Thu, 28 Jan 2010 04:03:53 GMT)
I work for a company whom after a year offered me health care. Now I'm on temporary disability and paying my own health insurance. Its expensive. My girlfriend is a college professor with a master's degree in Psychology. She was a full time employee at a local college and was recently (2 years ago) dropped to an adjunct because the college did not want to pay health insurance. In my job, i realized that it costs more money to employee 3 part timers without health care than one full time employee who health care options. Now, I don't follow politics alot because I don't have much faith in our government, but I raise a question : Why can't thegovernmentt offer incentives or tax breaks for employers who offer health benefits to their employees? In my opinion this would increase fulll time employment plus help with health care. Ibelievee that many companies would take advantage of this and even seek more 40+ hours in their employees and therefore the employees would make more money, stimulate the economy and the health costs would be less. As stated before, its just curiosity. But am I on to something?

Resolved Question: Is Republican Governor McDonnell lying again in his opposition speech?
(Thu, 28 Jan 2010 03:33:31 GMT)
WRONG ON ECONOMIC RECOVERY Gov. Bob McDonnell: Today, the federal government is simply trying to do too much. Last year, we were told that massive new federal spending would create more jobs 'immediately' and hold unemployment below 8%. In the past year, over three million Americans have lost their jobs, yet the Democratic Congress continues deficit spending, adding to the bureaucracy, and increasing the national debt on our children and grandchildren. [McDonnell Prepared Remarks, 1/27/10] CBO: The American Recovery And Reinvestment Act Has Created Up To 1.6 Million American Jobs. According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, "CBO now estimates that in the third quarter of calendar year 2009, ARRA's policies raised real GDP by between 1.2 percent and 3.2 percent, lowered the unemployment rate by between 0.3 and 0.9 percentage points, and increased the number of people employed by between 600,000 and 1.6 million compared with what those values would have been otherwise." [CBO, 11/30/09; emphasis added] CBPP: Recovery Act Is Keeping 6 Million Americans Out Of Poverty. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, "Although meant chiefly to help the broad economy, the stimulus plan Congress enacted earlier this year (the American Recovery and Re-Investment Act of 2009, or ARRA) had the important secondary effect of significantly ameliorating the recession's impact on poverty. This analysis, which comes one day before the Census Bureau will release updated poverty figures (for 2008), examines seven of the recovery act's provisions - two improvements in unemployment insurance, three tax credits for working families, an increase in food stamps, and a one-time payment for retirees, veterans, and people with disabilities - and finds that they alone are preventing more than 6 million Americans from falling below the poverty line and are reducing the severity of poverty for 33 million more. Those 6 million people include more than 2 million children and over 500,000 seniors. This analysis includes state-specific estimates for California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Illinois." Resolved Question: Can I sue at-fault driver for remainder of loan for totaling my parked car?
(Wed, 27 Jan 2010 23:41:37 GMT)
While I was shopping in a store another driver "lost control" of his vehicle and slammed into my car. At the scene, the police told me he went into a diabetic coma, but on the police report, it states that the witnesses and the cop that was there heard a loud popping noise, saw the car engulfed in smoke, then it drove straight for the passenger side of my car.My car then pushed into another parked car beside me, and that car pushed into the next car as well. My sister was waiting for me in the car, in the passenger side!! She is thankfully ok now. She is definitely going to sue as she was obviously doing nothing wrong! and he is definitely at fault! I just started financing this car 6 months ago so I havent paid that much. I still had 36 months to go!My car was appraised and found totaled. The insurance will only pay actual value of my car. This leaves me owing about $5000.00. I have been on disability for the past few years due to 5 surgeries that needed to be done. I am now finally starting to be able to live my life again...reason for being able to drive and get this vehicle. The accident happened on Saturday night, I started my school semester on Tuesday. Now I have to take busses, which my doctors have previously advised against due to shocks and the roads in the area. I am extremely inconvenienced by this whole situation. I also have a 15 year old son that I pick up from after school activities almost daily (that I could finally do again). Basically, I am now going to have to continue to make payments on a car I do not have while riding the bus that is making my health worse(surgeries were on my entire spine), pay for rides and cabs for my son to continue activities he has already started for school, and wait until the $5000.00 is paid off until I can even start saving for a down payment, taxes, registration, etc to get another car. All of this because I wanted to grab a few things from the grocery store. Does anyone know of anything I can do to get any of this money from him or his insurance or am I just totally screwed?? Me and my son have been through so many hard times in the past few years. Me and my health issues and him dealing with seeing his mother like this and helping me at such a young age. Financially we have nothing. I'll take any glimmer of hope anyone has to offer. By the way, my insurance company does not offer GAP coverage. The finance company does not have it either! I did not even know about it until trying to do research since this accident!! Thank you in advance. I thank you for answers, but I still don't see how I am in same situation. as before accident. I was driving a car before the accident and owed money. Now I am not driving a car, have to come up with other transportation until I can afford down payment, reg, etc to get new car on road while still paying car payments after the accident. I understand the concept of paying the balance, because it wasn't my car yet and I signed the contract. But now I have to start again with money I don't have that I just came up with 6 months ago because of something I didn't do...that's the part I really don't get. I have no vehicle through no fault of my own and will still be paying on a new vehicle and the balance of an old one because of another vehicles fault. That does not sound like the same situation to me. Then my loan will be $5000. more than my new car. Again, not hte same situation...please explain.

Resolved Question: Can an employer change to a Private Disability insurance without tell the employees?

Voting Question: Anyone know some Federal tax questions? Related to combined disability, unemployment, and regular income...?
(Wed, 27 Jan 2010 20:53:45 GMT)
A friend worked only 11 weeks during early 2009 earning just over ten grand. She then had a serious knee operation and went onto puny company funded 710 dollars a month short term disability for 6 months. finally, she got some unemployment payments for a few months. This was in NY State. Of course, she had a lot of out of pocket med costs for MD visits, tests, physical therapy, travel, phone, other medical payments which total up, plus some other deductibles if she files the long form with miscellaneous deductions... in NY. How does all this figure on both Federal tax returns as well as NY State tax dept. returns? Does the unemployment insurance count as regular income dollar for dollar....what about the short term disability payments? Any Special things and forms to do/use?

Resolved Question: Temporary disability?
(Wed, 27 Jan 2010 19:36:54 GMT)
I have a question about temporary disability... I had to have my doctor fill out a health sustaining medication form to keep me on insurance through the state because I am on suboxone for opioid dependence. Along with the form she filled out for me was a disability form and she marked that I was temporarily disabled and was on a treatment plan... I was just informed that I can collect money through the state if a doctor says I am disabled... I just want to ask if anybody has any info or experience with this and what I would need to do to collect money... If you plan on leaving an answer telling me I am an idiot and a loser for getting addicted to pain meds just don't waist your time. I was injured in an accident a while back and needed meds and I did get addicted... I am working with my doctor on a suboxone plan to get me off of them and so far it has been working great. I haven't used any meds in like 6 months.. So please mature answers only.. Thank you in advance for taking the time to read my question!

Voting Question: Can someone explain the difference between CA SDI and Paid Family Leave Insurance?
(Tue, 26 Jan 2010 20:37:33 GMT)
I know I am not eligible for FMLA due to the small # of employees at my work, but a letter from HR states that I am eligible for Pregnancy Disability Leave (PDL) of up to 4 months, which I can take one I become "disabled" to work. Does this mean that I can file for State Disability Insurance (SDI) and get paid through EDD for up to 6-weeks during my PDL? And after SDI, am I still able to file a claim and apply for Paid Family Leave Insurance? I have gone through the EDD website, but am even more confused than ever. Any help or information would be appreciated. Thanks so much!!

Resolved Question: US health insurance.....COBRA? Please help!?
(Tue, 26 Jan 2010 05:20:00 GMT)
Hi, I'm hoping someone could help me out with this as it's really stressing me out.....I'm British and have a close relative living in America, she is also British and has lived in the states for just under two years. She was working and had health insurance through her employer. She then got very ill very abruptly, and has been on disability and off work for almost three months. She was continuing to receive her insurance through her job but as I understand it, her job has the right to terminate her employment contract after three months. So if they do, I'm worried she will not be insured. She has major, important surgery scheduled for early Feb, and I'm anxious that the insurance will run out before that. I've heard about something called COBRA, but I'm not sure exactly what it is, or how to go about applying for it. Any advice on this will be greatly appreciated, as will any advice on anywhere we can go to get support/advice on this issue. My relative and I are both youngish (both under 25) so we do not have the resources someone older/more established in this country might have. Also being British we have had no experience whatsoever of the US health system and it's all very confusing. Thanks in advance for any replies

Resolved Question: Is being obese really a disability worth getting benefits for?
(Mon, 25 Jan 2010 17:01:45 GMT)
I understand if it's a disease or something where the person has absolutely 0 control over it. Then I feel bad, and they should get the proper surgery/ care. But I see fat people in their scooters, loading up the basket with candy, junk, soda, and fatty foods. Then, as they swipe their food stamp card they brag about their benefits and how the state bought them a car because they didn't fit in their last one, and they expect me to feel sorry for them. Then they go on and on about how they cant lose weight no matter how hard they try. I normally point at their sugary and fatty food and say, well at least you're on the right track to getting better. (is that too rude?) I used to work in fast food as a teen, and people would order 4 of the biggest fattiest burgers, a chicken sandwich, two large fries, and a side salad with a diet soda. They would get the salad and diet soda because they're 'on a diet'. I always wanted to explain that their one meal is the equivalent of 3 days of calories. I don't get it. These people get free housing, free transportation, free food, free insurance, free everything, because they decided to be lazy and irresponsible with their bodies. Why do fat people try to get you to feel sorry for them? Being fat is a choice, not a terminal illness. Should obese people get full benefits if it's not because of an illness out of their control? It almost makes me want to give up my perfect body and gain 200 lbs, so I can scoot through life for free. There's no benefits for being healthy and making positive life choices. i don't get it.

Resolved Question: What agencies are available in/for Rockford, IL, that assist people with disabilities?
(Sat, 23 Jan 2010 01:40:08 GMT)
I am trying to get assistance with moving into an environment that is healthy for me. It would need to be my own apartment and have significant assistance. (I could not live in a group setting do to certain quirks. I am not an easy person to live with.) I have tried Janet Wattles. I will simply state that that organization is good for some people, but has not worked for me. I have tried the ORS/DORS PA program and the criteria makes that impossible. I have tried RAMP on Market St. and I am told their are no programs that I qualify for. I do not qualify for ARC, I have asked. I think its Milestones, or Stepping Stones, that requires a specific type of doctor's referral. I cannot get it because of lack of that type of doctor taking the insurance I can get. (Health Connect's information is inaccurate.) What have I missed? I am legally disabled. I am very stressed tonight and would greatly appreciate reasonable information. TYVM.

Resolved Question: Breathing Disability and Family causing depression. Help or suggestions?
(Thu, 21 Jan 2010 21:16:19 GMT)
My breathing trouble, though never easy on my mind; is now having serious mental effects. In early December, my grandfather went to the hospital. He is in multi-organ failure and IS going to die. The hospital room they have him in is extremely hot. My lungs were burned by a chemical I inhaled (at work on July 5, 2002), and as such I am unable to breathe in warm air. I keep my home around 60F/ 15C all the time. I start suffering at 70F, and need an ambulance to take me to the ER if if gets to 80F/ 27C. It is very bad. I can not work because I need to stay cold, can't take any stress, and am not medically released to return to work. All of that sucks, but I have been dealing with it everyday for years now. But now my family has turned on me. My grandfather is dying. (This shouldn't be a shock. He has been sick for several years, and has had three or four heart attacks. He takes more pills in a day than he does food, that's how bad it is.) Anyway, for Christmas this year, several of my family members suggested that I should stop breathing. The most common thing said to me was, "Can't you just not breathe for ten minutes?" I wish I was making that up. You have no idea how much I wish that was a joke or a lie or some fiction I had laying around- but that is my life. So last week, tired of hearing it, I did. I went to the hospital to visit my grandfather, and then my dad and husband had to carry me out. I was drooling, and any body parts that weren't numb were in pain. I got home and was thirsty, but didn't have enough strength to hold the glass to my lips. I slept most of last week because I was in so much pain that even chewing food was exhausting. My mind was fuzzy. I forgot how to spell my friend's name, and couldn't even add 1/2 +3/4. (For the record, I was a Penn State Honors and Scholars student-- I am not a flaming idiot.) All that, oxygen deprivation, serious pain (still hurts, btw)--- and STILL I am right where I was. My husband, mom, and brother are the only family members that don't seem mad at me right now. I never did drugs. I don't go out and get drunk. There are about a thousand other risky things that I never even considered trying. And for what? So everyone can hate me for being a broken human? So people can want me to apologize for being alive? It isn't like I can trade my life for my grandfather's. Even if I killed myself and donated my organs, he isn't stable enough for the surgery! I am broken. I have been for years. But right now, everything feels so dark. Why am I fighting to stay alive? I have seriously considered going to a therapist--- but suppose the office is to hot? The fact that I've almost died in emergency rooms waiting for cold air... and now I think I'm going to find some head shrink that has a cold office? Yeah sure. I looked for on-line ones, but the ones I found aren't covered by insurance. But really, is there even a point? Do I think I'm going to get some pill to make this better? Would Prozac make my family accept me despite my disability? Do I think a therapist is going to come defend me? As if anyone in this stupid family would even listen to a therapist! I don't know. I have no idea what to do anymore. Sure, maybe this is some punishment for some sin. Or maybe this is supposed to kill me or make me stronger. I don't need to hear any of that. I don't know that there actually is anything that anyone can tell me to make things better. Sorry and hugs and screw them are all fine and good- but I'm hoping for some brilliant idea. Something that I've missed. Some way to make this at least a little okay, or at least bearable.

Resolved Question: Should I file a complaint to my states Insurance Commissioner about my short term disability insurance company?
(Mon, 18 Jan 2010 01:40:37 GMT)
I paid for short term disability through my employer when I was employed. Then I got an illness and had to have several surgeries in succession and I lost my job. I filed a claim which they received 1 month and 2 weeks ago. After 1 month they asked for 2 more forms to be filled out; 1 by my ex-employer and 1 more by my doctor (Which I think was a duplicate). That was one week ago. I contacted the sales lady, and she said she is working on it, and I should receive an answer on this coming Tuesday (day after MLK Day). Should I file a complaint before that date comes with the state or wait to see if they attempt to delay my payment more? The coverage was in place at the time the claim was filed and a payment was made for the month before I was let go.

Resolved Question: Single or married family with children that receives Federal or state Aids Try'n to debunk Stereotypes?
(Thu, 14 Jan 2010 17:58:32 GMT)
Single or married family with children that receives Federal or state Aids Try'n to debunk Stereotypes .For example maybe its a housing subsidy(sec 8) or public housing or FoodStamps/Snap or heating assistance or childcare stipends or State Health insurance or free clinics or SSI or SSDI or welfare or food banks .I think you get my drift i only ask because i am writing a bulletin on the negative stereotypes that are associated with receiving Federal or state assistant programs.Like single moms are only on welfare and don't rent to blacks with Sec 8 and public housing is the ghetto and Lazy people are on Disability or SSDI.I know there are hard working families sing parents as well as married families that may or may not work and "STILL" need these programs to make it. what do you think

Resolved Question: Estimate the city’s full cost of the fire department labor during 200X fiscal year.?
(Wed, 13 Jan 2010 15:54:49 GMT)
The following personnel information about the Marshal Fire Department for the fiscal year that begins January 1, 200X, is to be used. Employee Grade__Number in Grade__Salary______ Chief------------------------- 1--------------- $105,000 Shift Commander-------- 3----------------- 70,000 Firefighter 1--------------- 12--------------- 39,000 Firefighter 2--------------- 26--------------- 30,000 Clerical (part-time)------- 3--------------- 15,000 The city is part of the federal Social Security system. For 200X, the city and the employee each pay Social Security payroll taxes of 6.2 percent of all salary paid up to $90,000 per employee to finance federal retirement and disability insurance and 1.45 percent of all salary paid to finance Medicare. The city pays a portion of the cost of health insurance for each full-time employee, an amount equal to $180 per month. Employees on the payroll after June 30, 200X, regardless of hiring date, are part of a new pension system financed by a city payment of 20 percent of the employee’s salary and employee payment of 5 percent of the employee’s salary on pay received after that date. Payments up to that date were made by state appropriations from state tobacco tax revenue. Full-time employees received an allowance for uniforms of $750 per year. Estimate the city’s full cost of the fire department labor during 200X fiscal year, assuming no change in staffing. Separate that cost into salary and fringe benefit components.
