Resolved Question: What are some reasons that pregnancy disability would be extended past the normal 6 weeks?
(Wed, 03 Mar 2010 21:32:02 GMT)
I have had a serious of issues, but trying to find out if any will allow me to claim longer disability benefits from my insurance company - (private extra insurance)... they havent been exactly helpful! I barely get them to return a call, I have to try and catch them answering the phone and not going to voice mail... My job isnt a basic sit down and do nothing job and I cannot afford to miss my whole check, but I also physically cant do the job right now - cant afford to loose the job though either. Thanks... We sent in a vague form from my dr because there was so much and my medical stuff can be kept confidential, however when I asked my "insurance rep" after explaining some of my issues what they needed from my doctor - I am not getting an answer - my rep also doesnt appear to do email... I have not just called and said "what would it take to get an extension" my dr just doesnt know what is acceptable for them as there is a difference from me being not capable of working and being eligible for payment from the company. She doesnt question my ability to not be able to work - we are trying to figure out how to get me paid through my prego disability policy as this was all child related...

Resolved Question: I'm trying to get pregnant. Can I get short-term disability insurance now?
(Sun, 28 Feb 2010 21:43:28 GMT)
So I just talked to a friend of mine who is 11 weeks pregnant and she was telling me about all the disability leave options and I wondered if disability insurance like Aflac will cover the difference in wages. On their website it says it does but only if you give birth more than 10 months after the policy is effective. I'm not pregnant yet but should ovulate any day. This is our second round on Clomid. I ovulated last time but we did not get pregnant. I'm really hoping this is our month. Is there any point to getting the coverage now? Would I have a chance of getting coverage for a normal pregnancy with it if I did get pregnant this time? I know that if I don't get pregnant this time, I should have the coverage so that I'll be in the clear if I get pregnant next time. I also know it can cover for disability due to pregnancy-related illness from a non-normal pregnancy so it may have value there also. I am going to get it regardless, I'm just wondering if I get it next week, and ovulate next week if I will give birth after their time restriction. Any thoughts advice or opinions?

Resolved Question: Can you collect some sort of disability while pregnant and very sick?
(Mon, 01 Feb 2010 21:55:50 GMT)
I'm not pregnant but I am curious. If someone was pregnant and if their doctor places the pregnant woman on bed rest early in the pregnancy (3 months or so) is there some type of disability that can be collected? I'm not talking about through private insurance (short term disability) but anything from the state, etc.? And also, if the husband is working but it isn't enough, how would one survive paying bills? I just wonder cause this has to be a common occurence. Thanks My question doesn't pertain to someone who gets pregnant and who can't afford it. And i'm not asking for any social commentary. Everyone knows most people are just one paycheck away from being homeless. I'm asking what will happen if someone plans for a pregnancy and is prepared, but then gets a COMPLICATION (not forseen) and cannot work. I'm just curious.

Resolved Question: Lazy spouse during my pregnancy. How do u deal with those kind of men?
(Mon, 01 Feb 2010 06:18:17 GMT)
My husband is continuously lazy. He will do things on his on (when he feels like it), but not when you ask him. But if his mother or sister calls, he breaks his neck getting to them to help them. I am 35 weeks pregnant and just had to install the car seat in the car all by myself. Then I had to put together a cart because he decided that instead of helping me he would go and hang with his friends. I told him to get out, but he refuses to leave until the morning. He says that if I seriously want him out that I should call the police. I don't want the police at my house. I just bought it and we are new to the neighborhood. Plus that looks really bad when cops show up to your house for stupid stuff like this. I am just frustrated because I feel like he is using me most of the time. I work and he got laid off in September of 2009. He still hasn't tried to get a job...he says that he is saving me money by staying at home and keeping our 2 and 3 year old boys. I am on bedrest now and getting disability from my employer/insurance. So I shouldn't be lifting a finger, but I still have to work around the house. What should I do about this. I feel like I might be being unfair because of my hormones and the pregnancy, but on the other hand...who lets their wife do all this work like a slave while she is pregnant. He calls me dumb and stupid all the time...so there is some verbal abuse. What do I do?

Voting Question: Can someone explain the difference between CA SDI and Paid Family Leave Insurance?
(Tue, 26 Jan 2010 20:37:33 GMT)
I know I am not eligible for FMLA due to the small # of employees at my work, but a letter from HR states that I am eligible for Pregnancy Disability Leave (PDL) of up to 4 months, which I can take one I become "disabled" to work. Does this mean that I can file for State Disability Insurance (SDI) and get paid through EDD for up to 6-weeks during my PDL? And after SDI, am I still able to file a claim and apply for Paid Family Leave Insurance? I have gone through the EDD website, but am even more confused than ever. Any help or information would be appreciated. Thanks so much!!

Resolved Question: Short term disability pay after pregnancy?
(Tue, 12 Jan 2010 20:34:57 GMT)
I have medcost insurance and am entitled to 12 weeks of unpaid leave from my company when the baby comes. My short term disability pays 60% of my salary, but this I'm told is only for as long as my doctor okays me for. I'm told the standard is 6 weeks. I need to take the full 12 as it's our first child and I have no family here to help me with him. Of course I'd love to have the full 12 at 60% rather than only 6. Does anybody have any experience with this?

Resolved Question: taking vacation pay after applying pregnancy disability insurance?
(Tue, 29 Dec 2009 19:05:51 GMT)

Resolved Question: Should we get married? Insurance Vs Molina Medicaid?
(Mon, 28 Dec 2009 13:32:26 GMT)
My roommate and I found our that she's pregnant. She's disabled and is unable to work so she receives disability income and has Molina Medicaid. Well I'm about to be a father, which I'm excited about but she doesn't want to rely completely on me, she wants to be able to take care of the child as well. (So she doesn't want to get married and be placed on my insurance) Will her Molina Medicaid cover the necessary pregnancy expenses and all of the appointments? Also if we're not married how do I gain any connection to my child. I can understand how she wants to contribute and be semi-self reliant, I'm just concerned about the baby.

Resolved Question: Pregnancy is now considered a disability apparently. Do I qualify for unemployment or disability?
(Wed, 16 Dec 2009 20:25:16 GMT)
I recently resigned from a position in California to take a position in Seattle, WA. The position at the new company ended up falling through. This was after I had relocated to the area and moved into our new house. I am 4 months pregnant and have insurance coverage for the remainder of my pregnancy and for a year after the baby is born. However, I am now showing and having A LOT of trouble getting a job. I am more than qualified for the positions I'm applying - I know no one wants to hire a pregnant woman knowing she'll be on maternity leave in a few months. Since I resigned from my position in CA, I don't believe I'm eligible for unemployment. I have 2.5 years of taxed income in CA. Since I never held a position in WA, I'm not eligible here for sure. I thought maybe I would be eligible for disability for some of the pregnancy related issues I've had: debilitating headaches, memory loss (if you think pregnancy doesn't cause those things in the second trimester, look it up, it does!) plus the fact no one wants to hire a pregnant woman. I have been paying SSI for 16 years through my paycheck and I do have a monthly disability amount I am entitled to if I am in fact disabled. My brother in law works for the company I was going to be working for, so I thought there would be no problem at all. I got royally screwed. I know that. Please do not respond if you're looking to boost your ego and lecture me on the choices I should have made. I have learned a lesson from this and it sucks! I just need some advice on where to go from here. Thanks! Also, I attached a link that discusses the pregnancy discrimination laws a little. http://www.eeoc.gov/facts/fs-preg.html

Resolved Question: High blood pressure 23 weeks?
(Wed, 16 Dec 2009 17:27:17 GMT)
I have been off work for high blood pressure since I was 9 weeks pregnant. While I was working my blood pressure was through the roof (stressful job). I am now finishing up my short term disability which i had taken through EI since my work doesn't cover it until you've been there two years. I am eligible for Long term disability which i have already applied for and I am now just waiting for approval. I was talking with my benefits department through work and he informed me there is a VERY slim chance I will actually be approved since he figures high blood pressure is not a danger to my unborn childs life, or my life for that matter. I am not currently on medication because my doctor won't put me on it until I am at least 26-28 weeks to prevent premature labor...and she feels it is a last resort since right now in my second trimester it has come down past the danger point (which is normal since it often lowers in your second trimester) and the fact that i am NOT working is helping keep it down. I thought high blood pressure was in fact something to take seriously in pregnancy? It seems like no matter what my doctor puts on the forms it doesn't matter to the insurance company! Can someone tell me what all of the risks are with high blood pressure to myself as well as my baby? and if anyone has had a similar type experience please share..I am so frustrated!

Resolved Question: Pregnancy and Long Term Disability?
(Tue, 15 Dec 2009 21:59:48 GMT)
I don't know if many of you will be able to help me out but I'm getting kind of nervous... My doctor took me off work at 9 weeks due to high blood pressure and I have been on short term disability through EI since then. I am now 23 weeks and I have applied for long term disability through my insurance company through work. I was reading everything over and it seems like only really serious conditions get approved and if it isn't as "serious" it can take 10+ weeks sometimes. I know every insurance company is probably different but I imagine they have some basic guidelines to go by...Are you likely to get approved when the problem is due to pregnancy? I will only be on it until I deliver then i will on maternity leave through EI. I just really hope they take it as "serious" My doctor did a half assed job filling out the forms so that concerns me a bit to. Has anyone ever been on ltd while pregnant or have you ever been declined?? Mr. Awesome...I know you're just an idiot plain and simple, but I pay into EI out of every single one of my pay cheques I have received my entire life. I am off work due to medical reasons I am not off simply because I don't want to work. I think these 15 weeks i'm receiving from EI I have earned. For those of you seriously answering my question (thank you) they define "Serious" as cancer, heart conditions, broken bones..ect. It isn't exactly life threatening to me, but it does increase my chances of pre mature labor therefor threatening my babies life. I guess I just need to wait and see!!

Resolved Question: I'm so embarrased about being on medicaid...?
(Mon, 07 Dec 2009 15:29:41 GMT)
I've worked so hard and now that I find myself without work, pregnant and without insurance, I had to apply for medicaid. I feel so embarrassed holding my benefits card. I feel like a huge let down, not only to myself, but to my community that is already feeling overwhelmed by the amount of people on social services. I guess my reason is, I've worked, I love working and the uplift I get knowing I am financially independent, I feel so codependent and worthless. Everyone keeps telling me I've put into the system and it's meant to be there as a safety net, but so many people abuse the system that I feel it has a negative connotation and that provider offices look down at you. How can I get over this embarrassed feeling? I can't wait the last few weeks out of this pregnancy, I want to start working again! I hate sitting at home! (I'm in late pregnancy and have been trying for months to get work-had plenty of interviews-but I'm sorry-it seems like the employer sees your bump and doesn't want to hire you not only for liability, but for maternity/disability leave.)

Resolved Question: How to avoid IRS fine for underpaid withholding?
(Thu, 03 Dec 2009 15:15:36 GMT)
My wife was on short term disability for about 5 months this year with a tough pregnancy. The insurance company did not withhold taxes from the checks. The week she went back to work, she got laid off, so she has been on unemployment since then and also had no withholding coming from the checks. I have the money to pay the taxes we'll owe on her income, but I am told there is a fine for not withholding enough through the year. Will I truly be fined under the circumstances described? If so, can I make an estimated tax payment now (before end of year)to avoid this fine? Any other way to avoid it?

Resolved Question: can i collect unemployment during pregnancy?
(Thu, 22 Oct 2009 19:38:13 GMT)
I am a new police officer and recently pregnant, there is a chance that my job will put me off of work when i am unable to preform my job duties. They will put me off of work burn my sick time then i will be off with no pay unless they are able to find light duty work for me (which is unlikely because there is a long list and it goes by seniority). I am wondering will i be able to collect unemployment even though i technically still have a job? I do have disability insurance but will not be able to collect for 10 months after i started paying into it and ive only had it for a few months.

Voting Question: Pregnancy questions and morning sickness questions?
(Wed, 23 Sep 2009 22:06:43 GMT)
Ok so I am 12 weeks pregnant and my morning sickness is still horrible...occasionally it will go away but most of the time I feel sick. I have only puked about 4 times total. But I have a hard time eating, when I do it is not much. I don't think I have lost weight because my stomach is slightly bigger. Will the morning sickness ever go away? Also now I have horrible constipation. I took some milk of magnesia that my doctor said was ok but that was a horrible experience, now I am trying to take fiber pills...which is hard because they want you to take so many and then I just fill up on water...ugh...any other suggestions? One more question. I was working one job with great insurance, then I was offered a teaching position. I went to the doctor for my 1st visit under the previous job that I quit for the teaching job. When I went to the insurance and benefits meeting for my teaching job I was asking about pre concieved medical conditions if they were covered and if you still recieve salary when you go on maternity leave. One lady that works for the benefits dept. told me that if I was pregnant to sign up for short term disability and wait to go to the doctor until after nov. 2nd when the short term disibility kicks in that way I will be covered by insurance and I will recieve a pay check. But by Nov 2nd I will be almost 18 weeks and about 5 months pregnant, Is that bad not to see a doctor for that long???? I have a friend who says she went to her 1st visit then didnt go until she was 5 1/2 months???

Resolved Question: Short term disability without 10 month birth exclusion?
(Tue, 18 Aug 2009 11:27:57 GMT)
I know it's impossible to find short term disability that will cover you once you are confirmed pregnant. The insurance offered from my employee has a 10 month birth exclusion so you can't get pregnant until at least 1 month after effective date. I did talk to someone who said theirs only restricted them if the pregnancy was confirmed within 31 days of effective date. Anyone know of a company with that sort of exclusion? I don't know if I'm pregnant but I could be- so am holding off on a doctor's visit till I find out if I can get that insurance or not. Thanks. If you read the question I know that none will cover anyone once they're confirmed. And the one I can buy will cover maternity leave only if a pregnancy occurs 30 days after signing up. Please read my question.

Resolved Question: I have a legal question about maternity leave / employee benefits...please help!?
(Mon, 03 Aug 2009 13:50:11 GMT)
I’m going to ask this on 2 forums – legal and pregnancy, since I think both groups will probably have good answers. I have worked full time at the same job in Missouri for over 3 years, and I am due with my first child in December. My husband and I have done a lot of thinking, planning, saving and downsizing and have realized that I will be able to stay at home once the baby is born. However, I carry the insurance through my job, and I won’t be able to get on my husband’s until after the baby is born (as a qualifying event). At my job, I am eligible for 6 to 8 weeks of short term disability (at 60% of my salary), plus FMLA. But I heard that, if you don’t return to work after the baby is born, your employer has the right to charge you back – not only for the short term disability payments, but also for the full coverage of your insurance premium. I have googled this in a hundred different ways, and can’t find any information, and obviously I don’t feel comfortable asking my HR department. But because of this possibility, I am willing to return to work for a little bit, obviously…but I was wondering two things: 1. Is this true? 2. If so, how long do I have to return to work in order to avoid this? If you can, please help me out and let me know. Thank you!

Sept. 26th...here's a link to my other question: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AgFL3oILhMonCN4nijChR0zsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20090803065011AA83MwO No answers so far, but just in case. I hope you can manage, too - we've actually paid to get out of our current lease, which is a 3-bedroom house, in order to take up residence in a 2 bedroom duplex, but I think it's worth it. BeCki - I work for a company that has more than 23,000 employees. It's a pretty heartless corporation, lol. If they have any inkling that you want to go, then you're gone. I hate feeling as though I may be doing something dishonest, but when it comes down to it, I feel as though I have earned these benefits and they are mine and I should be able to keep them until I am done with my job. And I don't want to leave my job until baby is born. OK, for the ladies who wanted to know: "FMLA coverage is for employees that intend to return to work. If you don’t intend to return to work then you are not entitled to FMLA coverage, and your employer is entitled to reimbursement for your health insurance costs that it incurred for the period of time that you claimed FMLA coverage. You will have to return to work for 30 days (per DOL regulations) to avoid that liability." That was posted by an attorney on my other posting of this question. It does answer part of my question, but I'm still curious as to whether or not I will be protected for the 6 - 8 weeks of short term disability I get for the actual birth of the baby. I guess a partial answer is better than none, though. Good luck, everyone! OKAY - here is the FINAL ANSWER, ladies: "FMLA coverage is for employees that intend to return to work. If you don’t intend to return to work then you are not entitled to FMLA coverage, and your employer is entitled to reimbursement for your health insurance costs that it incurred for the period of time that you claimed FMLA coverage. You will have to return to work for 30 days (per DOL regulations) to avoid that liability. How not returning to work would effect your STD benefits depends on the terms of your policy, but I have never heard of a policy where you have to repay your STD benefits if you don't return to work. You should check the terms of your policy if you want a definitive answer though. " Thanks for your help, everyone!

Resolved Question: Is pregnancy considered a preexisting condition for short term disability?
(Wed, 29 Jul 2009 22:16:38 GMT)
Hi, I am pregnant and feeling super sick. I found out two weeks after I went perm with my job. In three months, I will qualify for STD - short term disability but it mentions in my insurance policy binder that STD doesn't cover preexisting conditions. My carrier is Sunlife. Would pregnancy be considered a preexisting condition and exempt me from qualifying for STD? Any suggestions? Thoughts? Would be much appreciated. I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Resolved Question: Am I crazy or Am I doing the right thing?
(Sun, 19 Jul 2009 02:34:26 GMT)
I am 30 weeks pregnant with my third child, have been married for almost 15 months, and I am getting tired of my husband. Long story short, we both work, I get paid every two weeks, while he gets paid every week. I have two kids from a previous relationship and I am currently on disability and bed rest due to complications with the pregnancy. Anyways, I pay for everything for my kids, from food to clothing, I provide medical care which is taken out of my pay. I have to pay a car note, and car insurance. And on top of that, we live in an apartment with electric included, but gas and water are separate. He says that he pays bills, but all he pays for is his half of his share of the rent, while I am paying for my half, gas and water, and cable, and I am tired of it. And on top of that he expects me to buy all the groceries while he thinks he can eat it all and not have to contribute. Basically, I am at my mom's now, and I refused to buy anymore groceries, and I refused to pay the cable, so they cut it off, and he yelled at me to get it turned back on with my money. Am I doing the right thing by letting him go through everything on his own? Serious answers please. Oh I forgot to say that his mom, who lives literally 5-6 mins away from our home, well he goes to her house just about every evening to eat dinner so that she can cook for him. He gives her up to 100 dollars a week for groceries, but he doesn't want to buy groceries for our home. I feel like he is taking from our family, and it's not right. And he had an attitude when I told him that since he didn't want to help buy groceries, he is not allowed to eat any. I hope you guys understand what I am saying.

Resolved Question: Are employers in some states required to have disability insurance?
(Fri, 26 Jun 2009 03:30:59 GMT)
Some states such as New York have disability insurance which is intended to Absence from work due to pregnancy and childbirth is covered 6 to 8 weeks of paid leave immediately prior to or after birth (longer if complications occur). However, are employers such in the State of New York, REQUIRED by law to have the insurance or is it optional? And yes I know that companies must provide Workman's comp but I am interested in the extent to which employers are obligated to provide maternity benefits outside of the FMLA. Resolved Question: How to claim for Pregnancy Disability Leave?
(Wed, 24 Jun 2009 16:28:16 GMT)
My employer is paying for SDI thru private insurance company (Hartford) and at the same time, taking out some amount of money from my paycheck to my CA SDI. I will be due in less than 2 months. Do I file a claim on both separately or just thru CA SDI? Please help. Our company HR does not know either because we are only a start-up company. Thanks so much!

Resolved Question: Can my doc write a note for disability in my third trimester?...?
(Fri, 19 Jun 2009 10:59:49 GMT)
I am now 29 weeks pregnant (almost 30). For about a year, I've been seeing a therapist and psychiatrist for an anxiety disorder, and more recently, depression. I am also under the care of an obstetrician. I have a high stress job as a supervisor/management. The type of work I do demands that I lift heavy objects regularly, climb flights of stairs throughout the day, and very high stress. My boss (last week) sat me down to tell me that I must continue to meet the requirements of my job (ie - lots of stairs, moving equipment and delivering heavy supplies) This has me so stressed, and I can't possibly keep up with what they are requiring of me. I was advised that light duty would not be an option during my pregnancy. Can my obstetrician write a note requiring a medical leave for the last 2.5 months of my pregnancy? I am afraid of losing my job, but I know that if I have a medical reason for being out, my employer will keep me on and hold my position for me. I'm really at the end of my rope, but I feel like I'm unsure as to how I ought to present this to my doc. I want to get his help, but I feel like he's going to think I'm looking for a 'freebie'. I guess I just feel guilty about the thought of going on disability. I do have disability insurance that entitles me to a maximum of 6 months time off, if I were to need it. Any advice on how to present this to my doctor? I really can't handle this job anymore, and can't afford to quit. :( Thanks for the answers so far! I live in NY, and my disability coverage is good, so long as it is doc approved. Not too worried about losing my job if they decided to fire me while on disability. I have been wanting to take another position elsewhere anyway. I just can't afford to be without any income until my maternity leave is finished. At that point, I plan on taking another job anyhow.

Resolved Question: 37 weeks pregnant, just got home from the doctors?
(Fri, 19 Jun 2009 00:02:26 GMT)
And so my blood pressure was higher today than normal but because I ran out of pills this week... I did not bother calling firgure I would be good till today so whatever... But thats not what is bothering me, so like my insurance is run dry.. I got sent to a specialist and got the bill a couple days ago I was charged 600 bucks for an ultrasound and 2 mins with the doc! So my dumb ppo spending acct is all gone because of that and now all my appts are out of my pocket so I canceled the rest my NST testing and appts with that expensive doc the baby always looked great anyways. Well I told my doc today and he is not happy and not taking no for an answer he said I need to be monitered... and he needs those ultrsounds completed.. and hes like if you dont go back to that doc Ill send u to the hospital for the testing.. well hmm I think the hospital will be even more expensive so I am gonna call and do at least 1 test a week. Then he sent me for a 3rd glucose test because he said the baby felt big today.. well I am technically full term... Why not just get her out already if she is big?!?! So next week I am gonna ask to be induced i do not have 600 bucks to pay a doc to see me for 2 mins espiecially when it is safe to get the baby out now. Any ideas though? Am I wrong for thinking this because we still will have the hospital to pay also.. I hate my insurance is there a way to get a secondary insurance for a month for pregnancy? Because its like I gotta pay a 1400 deductible and then like a certain percentage after that.. so its a reall crappy plan from my work which is totally NOT worth the money! But anyways any thoughts and help would be appreciated I am freaking out because since ive been on disability for like over a month already we are strapped for money plus all this.. Just kind of freaking out here.

Voting Question: What to do if employer favors family members and friends over regular employees.?
(Thu, 18 Jun 2009 02:58:43 GMT)
I work for an Insurance broker who owns a family owned business. I have worked there about a year now and didn't realize that so many family members and friends of the family worked there. Well needless to say, she basically favors these friends and family members. One daughter and her husband can come in any time they want, not come in at all and still get paid salary. While the regular workers have to work eight hours a day and be willing to work a little overtime without pay if it is necessary. If you leave early you have to make the time up and she has to sign your time card. If she doesn't sign your time card you don't get paid that overtime even if you make it up. Then there are the girls that do her special favors, (bring in marijuana). They always leave by $4:30p no matter what time they come in. Get a way with taking an hour and a half lunch, when we're only allowed a half hour lunch, but still only get 1/2 hour taken out of their pay. Plus they take about 10 breaks a day and disappear for many minutes at a time during the day everyday. The receptionist, her husband and I come in at 8a everyday, only take 1/2 lunch or less, and are ridiculed when we want to leave at 4:30. My boss will go "Oh no" "countdown". If the receptionist and I are not in sight for 1 minute she has a heart attack..But the other girls barely put in 3 hours of work a day and you can never find them. She also pays some people percentages and gives clients of others to her family members. . It is so unprofessional there, and I really feel I am needed there. When I got there it was a mess cause so one ever did anything. it just seems like there are different rules for different people. I can't quit cause jobs are scarce now. I tried getting in contact with the DFEH in my area, but they say nothing about family employees and discrimination. The only reasons they let you file a complaint is for sexual harrassment, religious, disability, pregnancy leave, and greivance leave etc. Does anyone know what I can do...I live in California. your answers are the problems.. Why is it discrimination when you are a different color, disabled, older, unattractive, overweight and not considered discrimination if you are not a friend or family memeber. I'm sorry but I got this job honestly from Craigslist..No one told me about it...I knew I was efficient for what the ad said..and I am doing a good job..I am doing a very good job.. I deserve a lot of credit...I think it should be considered discrimantion if you are not a friend or family member and are being treated differently.. I don't want to hear get another job. suck it up..all that b********. Let's start doing things right, disciplinning, and being responsible.like we used to be. The lazy trashy worker should be a thing of the past. Not the majority..

Resolved Question: Should I be able to go back and elect short term disability on my insurance due to a life changing event?
(Wed, 17 Jun 2009 14:59:00 GMT)
When I originally made my benefit elections, I didn't sign up for short term disability. Stupid, I know, but my pregnancy was unplanned and I couldn't think of any other reason I might need it. Hindsight is 20/20 and I would recommend taking advantage of this benefit if you have it. Anywho, I am eligible for FMLA leave obviously, but it's completely unpaid. The only way you get paid maternity leave is if you have STD. I contacted my HR representative about possibly electing STD NOW since I thought I remembered reading that you could change your elections if a "life changing event" occurred. (And wouldn't a pregnancy be a life changing event?) She told me there was no way I could change my elections. Is this correct? Do most policies allow you to change things due to extreme circumstances?

Resolved Question: Paying for birth questions? Insurance?
(Sun, 14 Jun 2009 07:14:13 GMT)
I am pregnant, and just wondering about insurance and the cost of the hospital stay? First of all, if you have to go on bed rest or something and are working - and the doctor puts you on disability what happens to your insurance? Do you still have to pay your normal monthly price or while you are not working are you not covered? How does it work when you go to the hospital? Will they bill you for charges or do you have to pay up front? (I believe my hospital co pay is 20% or something). How much more expensive is a scheduled c-section than a typical birth? Are high risk pregnancies more costly? I have blue cross insurance... since I work for them.

Resolved Question: Fired for being Pregnant! What to do NEXT!?
(Mon, 08 Jun 2009 17:00:10 GMT)
I worked for a furniture company, renting furniture. I went to the doctor on June 2, for pregnancy, the doctor gave me a restriction of "NOT LIFTING ANYTHING OVER 25 LBS". I took the note to my manager on June 3, 10 a.m. by 12:30 the district manager was there to give me "Administrative Termination", saying that I would still have my job and I could file for disability. I received a letter saying that I was denied the request for a medical leave of absence due to the 90 day policy. I have paid on insurance 1 month in advance before it went into affect on June 1. I also took out short and long term disability. The letter also states that I may or may not be guaranteed a position when I return. I called my human resources lady who said the papers for disability were sent out and that would be up to the insurance company. I feel like Im getting a run around because I don't know where to go from here. I could have been put in the office not lifting anything, should I talk to a lawyer what should I do from here? Please help.. Mommy to be is really stressing now!

Voting Question: Short term disability during maternity leave in Louisiana?
(Mon, 08 Jun 2009 04:18:09 GMT)
I've only been on the job for 5 months and I'm 6 months pregnant. I work for commission only, no salary no sick days no paid vacation no health insurance no nothing. Because I am a good employee my employer is allowing me 6 weeks of unpaid leave where he will hold my position, but no pay. I will be a single mother so help from dad is not available. I've paid into the system for 11 years and never drew a single benefit. So I don't need anyone telling me to pay for it myself, I have been. I researched social security and they only cover long-term. What agency if any covers short term? The only thing I can find on the internet is this: Private Sector Employees Job-Protected Medical/Maternity Leave: Louisiana guarantees up to four months of short-term disability leave to employees who are temporarily disabled because of pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions. Employers with more than 25 employees are covered by the law. But it doesn't tell you where to go or who to talk to. Anyone been in the same boat? Thanks

Voting Question: Medical insurance coverage while out on disablity?
(Fri, 05 Jun 2009 02:49:39 GMT)
I had my first daughter last year in the state of California. I was put on bed rest for 2 1/2 months by my doctor due to premature contractions. I was working full time and had to go on disability until she was born. My employer covered my medical insurance premiums, but when I was put on bed rest, they said I was now responsible to pay the FULL premium if I wanted my insurance to continue. I was still considered employed with them and went back to work for a couple of months after the baby was born. Can they require this or are they supposed to continue paying their portion while I am out? I paid about 1000.00 to keep my insurance while I was on disability, but I realize that some people wouldn't be able to pay it. Then would they lose their coverage right at the end of a pregnancy? It wasn't thru cobra. It was my regular medical insurance. My employer just required me to pay the portion that they normally covered or said my insurance would be discontinued. I wasn't out of work longer than FMLA covered me.

Resolved Question: child support, son is now 15-I'm scared to try for it?
(Mon, 04 May 2009 06:57:45 GMT)
I was always very, very, afraid of his father, I was in two women aware domestic violence shelters while pregnant and once again, when the baby was a yr old. I left then, in 95. I had also, during the last 5 months of my pregnancy, lived in a lone room boarding house. We got back to toghether, right after the baby was born. I stayed a yr, but his drugs and drinking scared me and I had to go on alone with the baby. And I did. He hardly ever came to see him- it was only at my asking, Now, He's 15, and would welcome so much, his dad in his life, but all these yrs it's been a 2x a yr thing. Christmas and sometimes another day in the summer. ( these days are not alone with my son, they are done with the two, now grown teens the woman he married brought into the marriage. It hurts both of us. All I ever wanted was for his father to be a man, pay support, and have a relationship with his only child. I have, our of fear, he would hurt of harrass me, not filed support of custody orders. He told me to send him the papers to release him from his rights, I never did. He said he didn't want to be a part time father-but ut was okay to just contiunue his dark livestyle? My son is not to happy I took that route. But I didn't want to live in fear and was scared to death he's never pay it anyway, and never see my son. If I go about it now, he is going to go nuts. I am STILL scared of him, AND scared of what or how he might talk to my son about it. My son's been hurt enough. I just wish, that after all this time, even seeing how his own son is terrific, and would never interefer in his life.... I really hoped he would step up to the plate, and go fill out the papers. I was pretty stupid to think he ever would. I so wanted him to know and love his son, THAT would hav been enough for me. Really. Never happened. My son hwas tried to reach out. What would you do? Everyone is on hard ecominic times, right now and he knows it's hit us hard. Would you try and talk to him via cell, would you just go file? I am scared and confused, I want to to thr right thing for my son, who really needs his dad around, But I don't want to be harrassed by him or his wife of several years. They are ok, they bought a house, both work. I;m on disability, and foodstamps, No homephone, no tv.cable, can't repair my car, and my insurance is dropping me- this is very hard times for us... the worst it's ever been. I just am up here all night, making myself sick over this issue. When I talked to a welfare worker who I see 2x a yr to determine if we are still elegible to get food stamps, she said to me once" How do u know if he's even pay it? So many mom's never soo the money" I feel at times I let fear let me fail my son in this matter. well, it's 15yr later, and AM still scared of the man, I am sweet as pie to him in any email contact we have. I've never been mean to him. Can you help me figure this out??? I dontt know if I should or shoudn't. .. He;s never ( lives 10mins away) taken any part in his life, I wonder if he thinks It's be just be and the goverment loans we will appy too, and not any of his contributions. Should read up there" just me and the goverment loans Lala, that really sucks. But see? I was already warned- they told me"ho guanette he;ll ever pay it.With the state, my son get 162. (but I am not really on welfare) I am in SSd disabiliy, and we ger 120( big wow, in food stamps, we weven live with a dorky kinda Slow" older man, just to make ends meet. He's never much here, unless to sleep, thank God. I just wonder if all of it would end up mote trouble than it would be worth.

I don't know if I can keep putting my body through this! Its hard work plus we use alot of chemicals & demo jobs. I was trying to find out if I have any options if I lose my income due to this. I have Blue Cross & Sheild insurance. Can I apply for disability or anything like that? My employer prob doesn't provide anything... its a private owner & he's a cheap a$$! Thanks in advance! Oh yeah... I'll be 23, married, mother of a 5 yr old, and live in Louisiana. Paying taxes since 15!

Resolved Question: Short-Term Disability Questions?
(Tue, 06 Jan 2009 18:49:12 GMT)
Hi: My wife's request to sign up for short-term disability through her employee benefits was denied by the insurance company due to a pre-existing condition she was born with. Are there any company's that issue short-term disabilities privately in situations like this? or because she was denied by one, she'll be denied by all (assuming there are even companies that provide individual policies). Reason being, we have been considering having a kid and are worried if she has complications during the pregnancy that require bed rest. She has enough personal time saved up to cover 3 months after the pregnancy, but we are worried if something should happen prior to giving birth how we will make ends meet if she is out of work for an unexpected 1-3 months prior. Any recommendations or insight is appreciated. Thanks for the reply. I do not believe her condition would have any relation to pregnancy, made worse, etc. She was born with the Hepatitus B virus, but does not require any medication such as interferon (don't know exact spelling) as of yet .This was why she was denied short-term disability according to the letter we received.

Resolved Question: can my doctor extend my pregnancy disability leave due to postpartum depression?
(Fri, 26 Dec 2008 04:11:50 GMT)
I'm suppose to be back at work after 6 weeks due to my delivery, I have no insurance with my work place, but I'm on pregnancy disability leave and I don't qualify for fmla or cfra, well my Q's is if I have ppd afterwards, can my doctor extend my Pregnancy Disabilility leave and is ppd consider a disability under pregnancy? Any accurate info will help, thanks! To Anna, thanks for replying, but you know what, you don't know me well, so why would you think I'm trying to con the system, I have a history of depression on and off, after the birth of my first child I had ppd and it was untreated, now I'm worried that since I'm working and off on pdl if I should have ppd again would that be consider a disability to get a few more weeks off and get some sort of treatment, I don't need your critizism or judgement about why I would want to extend my pdl, so plesae keep your CRAP to yourself and I don't care if you are a RN, but you shouldn't assume what you don't KNOW!

Resolved Question: My maternity insurance is giving me the run around?
(Wed, 26 Dec 2007 15:23:21 GMT)
I have aflac for my insurance since August of this year. I told the rep. that I am pregnant and she told me that if I got pregnant in August, that Aflac wouldnt be able to cover me bc pregnancy is considered a disability and there is a 30 day waiting period. I think I got pregnant on the last of August so I dont know what to do. I need my maternity leave and my friend told me that there is an insurance that covers even when your pregnant. What do you suggest?
