Resolved Question: I'm trying to get pregnant. Can I get short-term disability insurance now?
(Sun, 28 Feb 2010 21:43:28 GMT)
So I just talked to a friend of mine who is 11 weeks pregnant and she was telling me about all the disability leave options and I wondered if disability insurance like Aflac will cover the difference in wages. On their website it says it does but only if you give birth more than 10 months after the policy is effective. I'm not pregnant yet but should ovulate any day. This is our second round on Clomid. I ovulated last time but we did not get pregnant. I'm really hoping this is our month. Is there any point to getting the coverage now? Would I have a chance of getting coverage for a normal pregnancy with it if I did get pregnant this time? I know that if I don't get pregnant this time, I should have the coverage so that I'll be in the clear if I get pregnant next time. I also know it can cover for disability due to pregnancy-related illness from a non-normal pregnancy so it may have value there also. I am going to get it regardless, I'm just wondering if I get it next week, and ovulate next week if I will give birth after their time restriction. Any thoughts advice or opinions?

Resolved Question: Can you collect some sort of disability while pregnant and very sick?
(Mon, 01 Feb 2010 21:55:50 GMT)
I'm not pregnant but I am curious. If someone was pregnant and if their doctor places the pregnant woman on bed rest early in the pregnancy (3 months or so) is there some type of disability that can be collected? I'm not talking about through private insurance (short term disability) but anything from the state, etc.? And also, if the husband is working but it isn't enough, how would one survive paying bills? I just wonder cause this has to be a common occurence. Thanks My question doesn't pertain to someone who gets pregnant and who can't afford it. And i'm not asking for any social commentary. Everyone knows most people are just one paycheck away from being homeless. I'm asking what will happen if someone plans for a pregnancy and is prepared, but then gets a COMPLICATION (not forseen) and cannot work. I'm just curious.

Resolved Question: Short term disability pay after pregnancy?
(Tue, 12 Jan 2010 20:34:57 GMT)
I have medcost insurance and am entitled to 12 weeks of unpaid leave from my company when the baby comes. My short term disability pays 60% of my salary, but this I'm told is only for as long as my doctor okays me for. I'm told the standard is 6 weeks. I need to take the full 12 as it's our first child and I have no family here to help me with him. Of course I'd love to have the full 12 at 60% rather than only 6. Does anybody have any experience with this?

Resolved Question: High blood pressure 23 weeks?
(Wed, 16 Dec 2009 17:27:17 GMT)
I have been off work for high blood pressure since I was 9 weeks pregnant. While I was working my blood pressure was through the roof (stressful job). I am now finishing up my short term disability which i had taken through EI since my work doesn't cover it until you've been there two years. I am eligible for Long term disability which i have already applied for and I am now just waiting for approval. I was talking with my benefits department through work and he informed me there is a VERY slim chance I will actually be approved since he figures high blood pressure is not a danger to my unborn childs life, or my life for that matter. I am not currently on medication because my doctor won't put me on it until I am at least 26-28 weeks to prevent premature labor...and she feels it is a last resort since right now in my second trimester it has come down past the danger point (which is normal since it often lowers in your second trimester) and the fact that i am NOT working is helping keep it down. I thought high blood pressure was in fact something to take seriously in pregnancy? It seems like no matter what my doctor puts on the forms it doesn't matter to the insurance company! Can someone tell me what all of the risks are with high blood pressure to myself as well as my baby? and if anyone has had a similar type experience please share..I am so frustrated!

Resolved Question: Pregnancy and Long Term Disability?
(Tue, 15 Dec 2009 21:59:48 GMT)
I don't know if many of you will be able to help me out but I'm getting kind of nervous... My doctor took me off work at 9 weeks due to high blood pressure and I have been on short term disability through EI since then. I am now 23 weeks and I have applied for long term disability through my insurance company through work. I was reading everything over and it seems like only really serious conditions get approved and if it isn't as "serious" it can take 10+ weeks sometimes. I know every insurance company is probably different but I imagine they have some basic guidelines to go by...Are you likely to get approved when the problem is due to pregnancy? I will only be on it until I deliver then i will on maternity leave through EI. I just really hope they take it as "serious" My doctor did a half assed job filling out the forms so that concerns me a bit to. Has anyone ever been on ltd while pregnant or have you ever been declined?? Mr. Awesome...I know you're just an idiot plain and simple, but I pay into EI out of every single one of my pay cheques I have received my entire life. I am off work due to medical reasons I am not off simply because I don't want to work. I think these 15 weeks i'm receiving from EI I have earned. For those of you seriously answering my question (thank you) they define "Serious" as cancer, heart conditions, broken bones..ect. It isn't exactly life threatening to me, but it does increase my chances of pre mature labor therefor threatening my babies life. I guess I just need to wait and see!!

Resolved Question: How to avoid IRS fine for underpaid withholding?
(Thu, 03 Dec 2009 15:15:36 GMT)
My wife was on short term disability for about 5 months this year with a tough pregnancy. The insurance company did not withhold taxes from the checks. The week she went back to work, she got laid off, so she has been on unemployment since then and also had no withholding coming from the checks. I have the money to pay the taxes we'll owe on her income, but I am told there is a fine for not withholding enough through the year. Will I truly be fined under the circumstances described? If so, can I make an estimated tax payment now (before end of year)to avoid this fine? Any other way to avoid it?

Voting Question: Pregnancy questions and morning sickness questions?
(Wed, 23 Sep 2009 22:06:43 GMT)
Ok so I am 12 weeks pregnant and my morning sickness is still horrible...occasionally it will go away but most of the time I feel sick. I have only puked about 4 times total. But I have a hard time eating, when I do it is not much. I don't think I have lost weight because my stomach is slightly bigger. Will the morning sickness ever go away? Also now I have horrible constipation. I took some milk of magnesia that my doctor said was ok but that was a horrible experience, now I am trying to take fiber pills...which is hard because they want you to take so many and then I just fill up on water...ugh...any other suggestions? One more question. I was working one job with great insurance, then I was offered a teaching position. I went to the doctor for my 1st visit under the previous job that I quit for the teaching job. When I went to the insurance and benefits meeting for my teaching job I was asking about pre concieved medical conditions if they were covered and if you still recieve salary when you go on maternity leave. One lady that works for the benefits dept. told me that if I was pregnant to sign up for short term disability and wait to go to the doctor until after nov. 2nd when the short term disibility kicks in that way I will be covered by insurance and I will recieve a pay check. But by Nov 2nd I will be almost 18 weeks and about 5 months pregnant, Is that bad not to see a doctor for that long???? I have a friend who says she went to her 1st visit then didnt go until she was 5 1/2 months???

Resolved Question: Short term disability without 10 month birth exclusion?
(Tue, 18 Aug 2009 11:27:57 GMT)
I know it's impossible to find short term disability that will cover you once you are confirmed pregnant. The insurance offered from my employee has a 10 month birth exclusion so you can't get pregnant until at least 1 month after effective date. I did talk to someone who said theirs only restricted them if the pregnancy was confirmed within 31 days of effective date. Anyone know of a company with that sort of exclusion? I don't know if I'm pregnant but I could be- so am holding off on a doctor's visit till I find out if I can get that insurance or not. Thanks. If you read the question I know that none will cover anyone once they're confirmed. And the one I can buy will cover maternity leave only if a pregnancy occurs 30 days after signing up. Please read my question.

Resolved Question: I have a legal question about maternity leave / employee benefits...please help!?
(Mon, 03 Aug 2009 13:50:11 GMT)
I’m going to ask this on 2 forums – legal and pregnancy, since I think both groups will probably have good answers. I have worked full time at the same job in Missouri for over 3 years, and I am due with my first child in December. My husband and I have done a lot of thinking, planning, saving and downsizing and have realized that I will be able to stay at home once the baby is born. However, I carry the insurance through my job, and I won’t be able to get on my husband’s until after the baby is born (as a qualifying event). At my job, I am eligible for 6 to 8 weeks of short term disability (at 60% of my salary), plus FMLA. But I heard that, if you don’t return to work after the baby is born, your employer has the right to charge you back – not only for the short term disability payments, but also for the full coverage of your insurance premium. I have googled this in a hundred different ways, and can’t find any information, and obviously I don’t feel comfortable asking my HR department. But because of this possibility, I am willing to return to work for a little bit, obviously…but I was wondering two things: 1. Is this true? 2. If so, how long do I have to return to work in order to avoid this? If you can, please help me out and let me know. Thank you!

Sept. 26th...here's a link to my other question: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AgFL3oILhMonCN4nijChR0zsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20090803065011AA83MwO No answers so far, but just in case. I hope you can manage, too - we've actually paid to get out of our current lease, which is a 3-bedroom house, in order to take up residence in a 2 bedroom duplex, but I think it's worth it. BeCki - I work for a company that has more than 23,000 employees. It's a pretty heartless corporation, lol. If they have any inkling that you want to go, then you're gone. I hate feeling as though I may be doing something dishonest, but when it comes down to it, I feel as though I have earned these benefits and they are mine and I should be able to keep them until I am done with my job. And I don't want to leave my job until baby is born. OK, for the ladies who wanted to know: "FMLA coverage is for employees that intend to return to work. If you don’t intend to return to work then you are not entitled to FMLA coverage, and your employer is entitled to reimbursement for your health insurance costs that it incurred for the period of time that you claimed FMLA coverage. You will have to return to work for 30 days (per DOL regulations) to avoid that liability." That was posted by an attorney on my other posting of this question. It does answer part of my question, but I'm still curious as to whether or not I will be protected for the 6 - 8 weeks of short term disability I get for the actual birth of the baby. I guess a partial answer is better than none, though. Good luck, everyone! OKAY - here is the FINAL ANSWER, ladies: "FMLA coverage is for employees that intend to return to work. If you don’t intend to return to work then you are not entitled to FMLA coverage, and your employer is entitled to reimbursement for your health insurance costs that it incurred for the period of time that you claimed FMLA coverage. You will have to return to work for 30 days (per DOL regulations) to avoid that liability. How not returning to work would effect your STD benefits depends on the terms of your policy, but I have never heard of a policy where you have to repay your STD benefits if you don't return to work. You should check the terms of your policy if you want a definitive answer though. " Thanks for your help, everyone!

Resolved Question: Is pregnancy considered a preexisting condition for short term disability?
(Wed, 29 Jul 2009 22:16:38 GMT)
Hi, I am pregnant and feeling super sick. I found out two weeks after I went perm with my job. In three months, I will qualify for STD - short term disability but it mentions in my insurance policy binder that STD doesn't cover preexisting conditions. My carrier is Sunlife. Would pregnancy be considered a preexisting condition and exempt me from qualifying for STD? Any suggestions? Thoughts? Would be much appreciated. I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Resolved Question: Should I be able to go back and elect short term disability on my insurance due to a life changing event?
(Wed, 17 Jun 2009 14:59:00 GMT)
When I originally made my benefit elections, I didn't sign up for short term disability. Stupid, I know, but my pregnancy was unplanned and I couldn't think of any other reason I might need it. Hindsight is 20/20 and I would recommend taking advantage of this benefit if you have it. Anywho, I am eligible for FMLA leave obviously, but it's completely unpaid. The only way you get paid maternity leave is if you have STD. I contacted my HR representative about possibly electing STD NOW since I thought I remembered reading that you could change your elections if a "life changing event" occurred. (And wouldn't a pregnancy be a life changing event?) She told me there was no way I could change my elections. Is this correct? Do most policies allow you to change things due to extreme circumstances?

Resolved Question: Fired for being Pregnant! What to do NEXT!?
(Mon, 08 Jun 2009 17:00:10 GMT)
I worked for a furniture company, renting furniture. I went to the doctor on June 2, for pregnancy, the doctor gave me a restriction of "NOT LIFTING ANYTHING OVER 25 LBS". I took the note to my manager on June 3, 10 a.m. by 12:30 the district manager was there to give me "Administrative Termination", saying that I would still have my job and I could file for disability. I received a letter saying that I was denied the request for a medical leave of absence due to the 90 day policy. I have paid on insurance 1 month in advance before it went into affect on June 1. I also took out short and long term disability. The letter also states that I may or may not be guaranteed a position when I return. I called my human resources lady who said the papers for disability were sent out and that would be up to the insurance company. I feel like Im getting a run around because I don't know where to go from here. I could have been put in the office not lifting anything, should I talk to a lawyer what should I do from here? Please help.. Mommy to be is really stressing now!

Voting Question: Short term disability during maternity leave in Louisiana?
(Mon, 08 Jun 2009 04:18:09 GMT)
I've only been on the job for 5 months and I'm 6 months pregnant. I work for commission only, no salary no sick days no paid vacation no health insurance no nothing. Because I am a good employee my employer is allowing me 6 weeks of unpaid leave where he will hold my position, but no pay. I will be a single mother so help from dad is not available. I've paid into the system for 11 years and never drew a single benefit. So I don't need anyone telling me to pay for it myself, I have been. I researched social security and they only cover long-term. What agency if any covers short term? The only thing I can find on the internet is this: Private Sector Employees Job-Protected Medical/Maternity Leave: Louisiana guarantees up to four months of short-term disability leave to employees who are temporarily disabled because of pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions. Employers with more than 25 employees are covered by the law. But it doesn't tell you where to go or who to talk to. Anyone been in the same boat? Thanks

Resolved Question: Short Term disability pregnancy?

I have short term disability with AFLAC through my cuurent employer. I was pregnant and had to be on bed rest because the pregnancy was making me sick and unable to proform my job duties. I was not working for two weeks without pay; I did not have sick time or PTO. As an end result the pregnancy was terminated ( abortion). For the two weeks I was out of work can I use the insurance to collect for the days I was out of work?

Resolved Question: Short-Term Disability Questions?
(Tue, 06 Jan 2009 18:49:12 GMT)
Hi: My wife's request to sign up for short-term disability through her employee benefits was denied by the insurance company due to a pre-existing condition she was born with. Are there any company's that issue short-term disabilities privately in situations like this? or because she was denied by one, she'll be denied by all (assuming there are even companies that provide individual policies). Reason being, we have been considering having a kid and are worried if she has complications during the pregnancy that require bed rest. She has enough personal time saved up to cover 3 months after the pregnancy, but we are worried if something should happen prior to giving birth how we will make ends meet if she is out of work for an unexpected 1-3 months prior. Any recommendations or insight is appreciated. Thanks for the reply. I do not believe her condition would have any relation to pregnancy, made worse, etc. She was born with the Hepatitus B virus, but does not require any medication such as interferon (don't know exact spelling) as of yet .This was why she was denied short-term disability according to the letter we received.

Resolved Question: How would I go about obtaining info on disability insurance due to pregnancy and childbirth?
(Mon, 22 Dec 2008 23:37:00 GMT)
I live in GA and I am the only source of income for my family of three (about to be four) I am eight months pregnant and I do not qualify for FMLA or any type of paid maternity leave through my work. I talked to the Department of labor today and they said that since I will be unable to work then I do not qualify for unemployment insurance. A friend suggested that I may qualify for some type of short-term or temporary disability assistance, but I haven't had any luck through online searches and I do not know what agency I would even ask about something like that. Can anyone help me? I only worried about maintaining some type of income in the weeks it takes me to recover from childbirth, I do not consider children a disability. This is my second.

Resolved Question: Does it sound like I have a decent wrongful terminiation case?
(Fri, 19 Sep 2008 19:40:44 GMT)
I had been with my previous employer for 2 years. A great employee, never missed work, never was late. Exceeded my sales goals, and helped out in every way that I could. When I found out I was pregnant, I was diagnosed with hyperemesis gravidarum, and was constantly sick. I tried working through it at first, and was put in a hostile environment at work. My Dr took me off work, and I filed everything with my job. I was referred to their insurance company to work through my medical leave, and to receive short term disability benefits. It took a little while but everything was filed, I got a letter from my job saying that my leave was approved and a check for the disability. Great! I thought... I went to a doctors appointment only to find out that my medical insurance was canceled. I came home to find a Cobra Package in the mail, stating that my reason for Cobra was termination of employment. I thought it was a mistake, but when I contacted my employer, they confirmed that I was in fact terminated for job abandonment. They said that my leave was never approved, and I had abandoned my job. When I tried to show them the letter saying my leave was approved, they said it must have been a mistake and that I was terminated. I ended up in the hospital because of stress, and put on bed rest, so I let it go for a while, deciding that my unborn daughters health was far more important. Now I have had my daughter, and I was to settle this. I am in CA and have made an appointment with DFEH, but I am wondering if I have a case? I am going to be going up against a huge bank, (Wells Fargo) and their insurance company (MetLife). I'm nervous, but I feel they discriminated against me because of my pregnancy, and the condition that developed as a result of my pregnancy. Any advice would be so great appreciated!! Thank you!

Voting Question: short term disability maternity leave?
(Mon, 08 Sep 2008 21:51:20 GMT)
I asked this question a few weeks ago, but i didn't work it right, i hope i do it better now. Me and My Girlfriend found out shes preggo, which is great. She works full time for the same company for over 2 years now, she is enrolled in the health insurance plan threw them she DOES NOT have short term disability threw them, her open enrollment is in November (shes due im may). She called her insurance provider to see if she could sign up, and they told her "You can sign up, but you will get denied, because its a pre-existing condition" Then i was reading and i saw laws that said you cant classify pregnancy as a pre-existing condition. I am curious if she can sign up for it, or if she will get denied, she IS allowed 12 weeks leave threw the company but to get paid during that time you need short term. Like i said she has insurance already, the enrollment will be coming up in november, so she will have time to enroll.. but we want to know if she will be able to get paid? If not, are there any other options we can go threw to make this a little easier, things are going to be a little tight on just my salary. Thanks for your answers! Kyle We live in CT, i guess when she enrolled in what health benifits she wanted she didnt puch a check next to short term, so she was going to add it in november when open enrollment came back around.. but when che called to see if she could do this thats when they said she cant because its a pre existing condition.. We know her insurance is goign to cover the hospital part, but she 12 weeks shes home with the baby, we want to make sure shes getting her paycheck, atleast partial.. otherwize daddys going to have to work two jobs

Resolved Question: Pregnancy Pre-Existing Condition... is it?
(Sat, 30 Aug 2008 14:11:30 GMT)
Hey guys My Girlfriends Pregnant, we just found out last week!! She works full time and has health insurance... What we are wondering is, can she sign up for short term disability so she can get paid for her maternity leave? i know you can take a leave with out it but i don’t know if they will pay you with out short term... she talked to the insurance company, and they said that before you can sign up for it they give you a sheet with about 10 questions about if you have anything, and if you answer yes to any of those, you get denied for it, and she couldn’t remember if pregnant was on there... Also, they wont het her sign up till next November… babys not due till may, but cany you change your insurance for life changing events? so if you can help me out, we want to make sure she gets paid for the time off... otherwise its going to be a little tight for a few months... is there any other options we can explore if they wont let her sign up for short term? thanks for your help?

Resolved Question: Can my wife work at another job while on short-term disability?
(Mon, 18 Aug 2008 18:48:19 GMT)
To make a long story short...my wife already has a lower back problem and we are expected our first child. The doctor put her on a weight restriction due to her back. She is a mail room clerk at her insurance company. So she can't leave over 10 lbs. Remember the restriction is due to her back and pregnancy. So HR told her to do this other job until the other person comes back (we don't know when she will come back). When she does come back she has to use the Family Medical Leave Act and go on a short term pay of 26-weeks and then we then baby comes she can go on long-term. Well, we are wondering can she pick up another job??? This would be something part time since she will be at home twiddling her thumbs. She is healthy enough it is just the job she is doing does require some lifting.

Resolved Question: Keeping insurance during a high risk pregnancy?
(Thu, 07 Aug 2008 15:11:44 GMT)
I just found out I'm pregnant again. My youngest son will be a year old on the 29th. While pregnant with him I dealt with high blood pressure which has not stopped. I am still on medication. I have already called the specialist I was seeing with the last pregnancy. But I really doubt I will be able to continue working as long as I did before. How can I keep my insurance coverage for at least the duration of the pregnancy if I have to stop working? Can I get short term disability if the doctor recommends it? Or will FMLA and COBRA cover it? I've heard that COBRA is really expensive. Thanks in advanvance for the info.

Resolved Question: Can I file for workman's comp or short term disability due to a medical injury while working?
(Sat, 14 Jun 2008 05:45:19 GMT)
I have been off work since Jan. of this year due to a foot injury. I had a bad heel spur with a fracture. Also a gangleane cyst which I have yet to treat. I have worked on my job for almost four years. My job requires me to be on my feet and do some heavy lifting. Also daily typing and use of my hands. I was working when all of these injuries happened but did not know about workman's comp. I spoke with a lawyer who said it may be hard to prove as an on the job injury but will need all my medical papers to prove. Also had a baby a year ago which also put more pressure on my feet and body to the point where I was swelling and had a pregnancy condition called edema. My job was paying me but only for one hundred and fifty days. That has now run out so now I have to give up my job insurance cause I can't afford to pay anymore. I have two kids to support and was suppose to be married at the end of June. How am I suppose to do any of that now? Just had surgery. Please help me?

Resolved Question: How can I get help with medical bills? Unpaid maternity leave? I'm pregnant w insurance, but its not enough
(Thu, 15 May 2008 19:43:25 GMT)
I have a pretty good medical insurance plan but no short term disability or other type insurance to cover time off. I am 4 months pregnant and when I leave my job for maternity leave, it will be unpaid ( I will need at least a month or so off) and I still have a ton of bills, mortgage, etc. plus I have to pay my deductible which is $1500 plus 20% after this, so I am looking at a few thousand dollars I will still have to pay. Does anyone know of any assistance I can still get? or even any short-term disability coverage I can still get with my pre-existing pregnancy condition? any suggestions at ALL would be much appreciated!

Resolved Question: Is there a way to collect short term disability during pregnancy if your office insurance does not provide it?
(Wed, 26 Dec 2007 20:46:21 GMT)
I was really counting on this during my pregnancy and I just found out today that we only have health and life insurance. I was wondering if there were any other outside companies that provide it.

Resolved Question: Short-Term Disability and FMLA?
(Sat, 15 Dec 2007 17:50:53 GMT)
I was in a car accident at 17 weeks into my pregnancy. I am a high-risk pregnancy to begin with because of 3 prior miscarriages and only 1 live birth. During the accident, something was done to my back --- nerve tests are positive for damage and irritation from the L5-S1 nerve root. I also have every symptom of a herniated disc, but the MRI was negative. The pain is excrutiating. I was placed on bedrest by my neurologist and the OB/GYN agreed that bedrest would be the only way to alleviate the pain and to prevent further possible damage since testing in pregnancy is limited. Now that you have the background --- I was granted FMLA for 12 weeks only? I have not received my disability pay and am now being told that my FMLA will not be extended. Any suggestions? I have been with this company for over 5 years and the director says I will have my job upon return, but the corporate offices and the insurance carrier seems to have different ideas? Constructive comments only please!

Resolved Question: Switching OB/GYNs at 22 weeks of twin pregnancy.?
(Tue, 04 Dec 2007 19:12:32 GMT)
Here's my dilemma. The doctors I have been attending are perinatals (specialize in fetal and maternal monitoring). As policy, they recommend twin pregnancies to enter bedrest at 24 weeks. Good, because this is a very hard pregnancy. I filed a claim through my short-term disability insurance policy. The problem is that I need to switch doctors because the care hasn't been all that great; extremely impersonal. I have already announced it at work formally, my son has been taken out of daycare, and I am done working within a week or so. What will happen with my bedrest? Will the new doctor back up the claim? I worry about the insurance since it is the doctor who has to authorize this. By the time I'm switched, I should already be in bedrest. Should I report it to the insurance people? Can the new doctor sort of "pick up" the prescribed bedrest? Sorry..........this is so overwhelming

Resolved Question: Does anyone in GA know of any unemployment/short-term disability insurance for high-risk pregnancies?
(Fri, 30 Nov 2007 02:00:27 GMT)
I am 24 weeks pregnant with my second child and because of some complications and the fact that my first child was born premature, I am now considered to be high risk. I work full-time right now, but I am not going to be able to work much longer because I am supposed to stay off my feet per the doctor's orders. I think I have heard of programs or insurance for situations like this somewhere, but from reading on the state's department of labor website, it does not seem like I qualify for unemployment insurance because I am leaving my job by my choice. Has anyone been in this situation before? Is there any program or service or insurance that might work for me? It is just not an option for my family right now to not have some sort of second income coming in. I really appreciate any advice you guys may have. I have always worked full-time and had money coming in, and this has me scared! BTW- The company I have worked for for the past year only has 8 employees (so no FMLA)

Resolved Question: Medical Leave Act - Dr. only signed for 6 wks, but....?
(Fri, 12 Oct 2007 04:09:55 GMT)
I'm allowed 12 wks off of work for pregnancy. I planned on taking 11. I have short term disability insurance. My HR said to have the doctor sign my leave paper for my 11 wks & it will be paid by STD insur. Well my doc only signed for 6 wks. I went in today to explain my leave policy at work & why I wanted off that long. The ob/gyn nurse said he can only sign for 6 wks. What the heck? Now what do I do? I need the money while I'm off. Other people I know, their doctor signed for them to be off as long as they wanted. Why is my doc being difficult? What to do to be off work & get paid?

Resolved Question: Does Aflac insurance cover pregnancy?
(Mon, 23 Jul 2007 16:37:49 GMT)
I purchased aflac insurance because I was told they would pay for me to be off after I had my child. I purchased it about 6 months ago. Now, I am trying to get all my ducks in a row (I am 3 months pregnant) and the agent is telling me that aflac does not cover pregnancy nor did they ever. I will be off work for 12 weeks. 6 weeks is covered by my own short term disability. I purchased aflac to cover the remaining 6. Can anyone help me out with the specifics on aflac?

(Mon, 02 Jul 2007 15:06:44 GMT)
I've had many people tell me that since she was fired during pregnancy that she should still receive short term disability. I'm just wondering if anyone can help me. Now we don't have any insurance for her as I can't add them to my medical coverage until we get married which we may have to do. We live in Iowa. Any help would mean alot. Thank you.

Resolved Question: Filed for pregnancy short term disability. After checking w/ insurance company many times due to no response,?
(Sat, 26 May 2007 21:52:00 GMT)
I am now being told I had to have had the policy for 10 months. I have requested several times for explanation of my beneftis which I have not received yet in the mail. I keep getting different stories, either my case is preexisting ( because I picked up health/std insurance in Jan because my employer switced insurance companies and I was already pregnant) and now the have to have insurance 10 months now. I still don't have a denial letter from them yet. I applied March 4 for hypertension/severe back pain from job duties and delivered on April 12. What should I do next. First time having STD insurance. If I would have known I would not receive payment, I would not have stayed out of work for 6 weeks postpartum either. HELP.

Resolved Question: Filed maternity claim with short term disability. Now 2 months and they are trying to deny .?
(Mon, 14 May 2007 14:53:31 GMT)
Job switched insurance company in Jan. due to rate increase. I was already pregnant and had disability with previous company. I sent in claim in March. Recvd letter in April asking for physician form to be completely filled out. Sent in completed form with maternity claim. After continuously calling to inquire, getting different stories, now they say they don't pay for preexisting conditions. They paid for my pregnancy health care though. Do you have to have the disabiliity insurance for a certain amount of time for them to pay before claiming? I have asked for insurance booklets explaining benefits since January and have not received that either. What can I do. Been out of work since March 4 for hypertension/back pain before birth on April 12. Thanks

Resolved Question: First pregnancy and can't afford child-care? (car payment $448, rent $1060, insurance $287.......?
(Thu, 26 Apr 2007 17:16:10 GMT)
I'm 22 and this is my first pregnancy and I am on my own. I am just making it with just me but now I have a child on the way and I have so many bills (car payment $448, rent $1060, insurance $287, electric bill $54, gas/heating bill $84, fuel per month to get to and from work which is a 50 min drive to and from $190, cable $86 and now Doc co-pay and whatever my insurance don't cover ect.) I am in a scramble and wrecking my brains trying to finger out what I'm going to do when I come off my maternity leave. So far I have everything planned out as far as pay while I'm out (short term disability) but after that is just all a blank. I called around to ask the rates of childcare but most places and privet sitter are talking $250-$280 a week for my infant. And I tried talking to Social Service but they say I'm not eligible due to how much I make by the way is not much $13.50 hourly. I can't quit my job, I don't have any family close by but my baby is due 6/29/07 time is running out for me!! I live outside of Washington DC in the Northing VA area as for rent it is about the cheapest around this area an that is what I did move away to get a cheaper rent other wise I would be paying like between 11,000-12,000 for a one bed room. But the car thing I have tried to get rid of it but I owe more than it's worth I would be like $9,000 upside down in negative equity. I did a stupid thing by getting a car on my own and got screwed.

Resolved Question: disability insurance question?
(Fri, 02 Feb 2007 14:18:35 GMT)
im in what you could call a temporary position even though I'm getting 43 hrs a week, still part-time as the company hasn't switched my status to full time and most likely wont change it while in this position. Im only filling in for someone who is absent due to pregnancy. I make a measly 10 bucks an hr and as I said the position is temporary and sooner or later I should be moving into a real position that has a salary compatible with someone with a masters degree which may or may not be with the same company. So my reasoning is that I should just wait until I have a full-time position with stability and good income before I worry about getting short and/or long term disability income insurance...Does that reasoning make sense to others or should i get disability anyway even though my salary is bound to change probably within no later than 3 or 4 months....?? oh by the way as a part-time employee I would have to also purchase the disability income insurance outside of the company since it isnt offered for parttime employees. im 28 years old im healthy and have a good deal of savings wouldnt social security or whatever governmental or state funding care for my needs if I became disabled anyway since im only making 10 bucks an hr I wouldnt see it being much of a stretch what sort of requirements are there for a person to get help from the government in the case of a disability?

Resolved Question: Is there "secret" disability insurance with utility companies?
(Tue, 09 Jan 2007 05:11:49 GMT)
I am on Short term disability for a pregnancy complication. Someone told me that you pay for disability insurance with your utilities, but that they don't tell you that you are paying it. Is this true? What about cell phone companies? Just curious - if I have been paying for it within my bill then I want to use it! Thanks!
