Resolved Question: How do I find out if I qualify for Social Security disability?
(Thu, 04 Mar 2010 04:35:50 GMT)
I am a 21 year old male. I have severe scoliosis and was born with an extra vertebrae in the middle of my spine which has a naturally occurring scar and bump to prove it. I had no idea I had the extra vertebrae or scoliosis till I was 15 and got my first physical and was sent to OHSU (Oregon health and sciences university) to get a shot of radioactive isotopes and then a heat scan of my spine. I have always had back pains from standing, sitting, laying, walking and even just breathing from time to time. It effects my ability to work very much. I have a 1 year old son with my girlfriend from high school who works and does school.
I try to get a regular job but they always ask if I can lift or move over 30 pounds easily which is always no.... or they can you stand and/or sit for long periods of time which is also no. I have never had medical insurance so I have no way of seeing a doctor unless I go to the E.R. again and get a $6,000 bill for xrays and shots and pain killers (Which I never take cuz it masks the pain and when it wears off its always worse.. not to mention expensive out of pockets with just my girlfriend working).
I have never used the state or government for money help ever, but I am at a loss of how to support my family till we can figure out my spinal deformity and its obtrusive continuous pain. Anyone that knows anything about Social Security Disability and how to determine if I even qualify or what to do please help, your answers will be greatly appreciated.

Resolved Question: Alternative medicine, I can not kick this head cold. any suggestions?
(Sat, 02 Jan 2010 12:20:51 GMT)
Ok, I was an elem teacher, got CFIDS, got no disability and have no health insurance sine 1999, so please don't suggest I go see a naturopath or any of that. I would love to, but can't afford anything !
So, I usually don't get head colds at all. But this one will NOt let go. I started Raw food eating about 3 months ago and it healed me of my CFIDS after 15 years of it, but i wonder if I am not eating correctly and that is why I can't kick this very unusual head cold ? I juice many fruits and veggies and eat almost exclusively raw, not meats etc.
I rarely, very very rarely in my 59 years have gotten head colds, ( maybe 5 times in 59 years ) .I have no fever, I don't get fevers either
usually if I get any cold at all, it goes directly to a chest cold. do you have any suggestions ? i will tell you that I seem to be having emotional trauma because of family rejection and it has been going on for a long time, but has crescendo'd with grands I can't see much , and it is winter and I have S.A.D.S and I live in Oregon, very little sun. But I don't really know how to combat this cold that won't go away. I am taking large doses of Vitamin C and started a tincture of Golden Seal Ecinachea yesterday. any more ideas, ???

Resolved Question: I need help! Are you a lawyer or paralegal?
(Fri, 16 Oct 2009 13:38:44 GMT)
My husband and I were in a car accident back in March of this year that ended up with him having severe problems with his arm. At first the Insurance Company wouldn't pay for his medical treatment until we got a lawyer about a week after the the accident. Since then, my husband has been going to the Dr and even had surgery back in August. The Drs took him out of work back in April which resulted in him loosing his job and medical benefits. The Dr still will not release him to back to work even telling him that his injuries may not ever allow him to go back (which means he will go on disability)
Yesterday my husband went to see the lawyer and he was told that his PIP is all used up and the lawyer doesn't feel that it is worth him going to court because it will cost us more money. He asked my husband to sign a form saying that the he was giving the lawyer pemission to not go to court and that was it. My husband signed the paper and the lawyer said that he would have a check for xxx amount of money within 2 weeks and that all of his earlier medical bills will be paid.
This is what I need help with.... Its not the money that we may/ may not get from the insurance company that matters. This is about my husband who is still going through medical treatment for an injury caused by the accident and him losing his job with the possiblity of never going back to work. I don't know what to do at this point. Do I fire our current lawyer and if I do that do I owe him money from taking the case for the last few months or do I just walk away with whatever the insurance is willing to pay my husband? He currently has no insurance and I could put him on my work insurance but then he may run into pre-existing problems.
Can someone please help me with advise on what to do? Or, if you are a lawyer, what are my options? We live in Portland, Oregon. Thank you for any advise.

Resolved Question: What are the in and outs of disability?
(Mon, 06 Apr 2009 20:45:04 GMT)
My dad has a foot infection down to the bone. He may lose it. I'm wondering about his ability to collect disability. He will be 60 in October, has been self-employed his whole life. He's a logger and will not be able to continue to work as a logger. What is the legal procedure for him to collect disability?
On top of this, he is diabetic, has high blood pressure, cataracts, and kidney problems. He needs to retire...but can he? How does disability work? What about social security?
He lives in the state of Oregon if that helps.
Also, he has no medical insurance, so advice on how to help with his medical bills would be great too.
And I'm young, have no money, so I can't support him.

Resolved Question: what should my Hourly rate be if my job is asking me to go from W2 to a 1099 (indep. contractor)?
(Mon, 02 Mar 2009 16:56:49 GMT)
I was hired by a company in Florida 1.5 yrs ago while I was living there, but recently I've moved to Oregon and they're allowing me to work remotely. However, they prefer that I become an independent contractor 1099 due to the benefits change and paper work involved. I would like to know how to calculate my hourly rate because currently I have Health Insurance, Dental, Short Term Disability, 2 weeks vacation, 2 personal days, 5 sick days. Should I take all of this into consideration as to what my hourly rate should be?
I know I will get my own LLC and I plan on hiring an accountant once that step comes, but right now all accountants are too busy with tax season to sit with me.
Thank you in advance.

Resolved Question: DISABLED w/ DEPRESSION w/ SDI, MediCare, MediCAl, Section 8-HUD...I want to move from CA to ORE...WHAT 2 DO?
(Sun, 12 Oct 2008 02:45:13 GMT)
I suffer from severe, chronic Depression and have been disabled for 14 years. I have lived alone in the same apartment for all 14 years and have been on Section 8 Housing Assistance, HUD, for 13 years. I receive both state MediCal and Federal MediCare Health insurance and I am a US Navy Veteran (not disabled w/ military and rarely use their services).
My depression has stayed more or less the same all these years and I feel that a change from the monotonous environment and weather would help. I have also been suffering from high blood pressure, a low immune system and menopause and can't stand the heat. I'm miserable and am unable to exert myself in these warm conditions.
I live in San Diego, CA and want to move somewhere around the Portland, OR area. I lived there until I was 19 and loved the area. I think an environment that has a change of seasons with both rain and snow and lots of green scenery would be better for me than the present day in, day out, sunny and too hot, concrete jungle I have lived in for too many years.
I don't have a car...figured I'd U-haul it up there...and buy a car in Oregon where they don't have a state tax...So I would have to save for truck rental, gas, rent and deposit, and maybe the car...this will take me at least two years...
I have contacted some agencies in Oregon and in San Diego by phone and by email...but I am not getting anywhere in finding out how to transition between the two states...My depression is telling me to just give up...but... then I found this website...Sooooooo....
HERE ARE MY QUESTIONS...???
I would need to save money for the move...How do I save the money without having to claim it as an asset on my yearly evaluation forms for Section 8 and MediCal?
I need to transfer my Section 8 housing and find a
residence...before I moved...How do I do this?
If I saved $2,000.00 the first year and had $4,000.00 in two years for the move...Would this amount of "liquid assets" be detrimental to ANY of the monetary or service benefits I now receive?
I would need state or federal Health Insurance in Oregon...does MediCal and MediCare transfer? or Do I have to be re-evaluated after I move there.
I would need to transfer my Social Security Disability payments...OR...WOULD I HAVE TO BE RE-EVALUATED IN OREGON...to continue receiving SDI?
WHAT ELSE would I NEED TO DO?
Is there a SOCIAL or STATE or ADVOCATE AGENCY that could HELP ME arrange all these changes and help me make a smooth transition?
I'd be thankful for any feedback...it would be one step of progress made on this slow journey..
GREATLY APPRECIATED
Namaste'

Resolved Question: Would contacting a lawyer help? Anyone have a similar experience?
(Sat, 07 Jun 2008 00:38:07 GMT)
I feel like I am losing my mind here. I can't work because there is something seriously wrong with my leg/hip/thigh & I can't get medical care, and SSI has denied me because there is not enough Medical information for them to go by they said. I cannot GET diagnosed because we can't afford for me to see a doctor. I've heard time and again how difficult it is to even get Social Security-and many have said you have to get a lawyer. I have no idea what to do at this point. I am on the FHIAP(family health insurance assistance program) reservation list, which might come up in 2009 I was told. I repeatedly apply for OHP(Oregon Health Plan), and I've even applied for health care services through Senior & Disability Services-but have been denied twice already. I am not getting anywhere. My husband is the only one working-supporting a family of 4 on a min wage job. I am out of idea's, and am now wondering if maybe Legal Aid could help at all. I'm tired of this pain too.

Resolved Question: How can I locate a professional to provide a medical disability assessment for an insurance settlement?
(Thu, 27 Mar 2008 22:33:21 GMT)
I need to find an independent, qualified person/service to provide expert testimony for an insurance settlement case. Specifically, to provide an assessment of the nature, extent, and prognosis of injuries I sustained in an auto accident - with the possibility of using this information if the case goes to court. I have looked online for "disability assessments", "disability profiles", etc., but am not finding anything in my local area (Portland, Oregon). Any suggestions?
