Voting Question: My friends brother is on social security disability he with his wife lives in the house?
(Thu, 11 Feb 2010 01:49:10 GMT)
My friends sister and her husband live with their married daughter. That girl pays the mortgage, utilities and part of food expenses, because the ssd they get is not sufficient for paying their medical insurance and medicines(they are not fully eligible for medicare.) My question is can the daughter apply for some tax credit because she is taking care of disabled person,or any benefits that girl can get.Pl advise,so that the girl gets relieved from part of her burden. The couple are not eligible for ssi because thay have more than 3000$ cash, which comes only after their 60 years

Resolved Question: Does home insurance have disability coverage?
(Fri, 05 Feb 2010 00:17:54 GMT)
I have become permanently disabled & can't work. I have mortgage insurance but can't seem to find anything about disability coverage. I've been approved for Social Security Disability benefits. But thanks for the suggestions.

Resolved Question: Are there any financial assistance programs available to those who are ill/out of work for a time, that can?
(Sat, 09 Jan 2010 17:59:18 GMT)
help the patient with their living expenses? I have heard that Salvation Army or Red Cross may help with utilities while one is not able to work, but not sure about mortgage payments? I was diagnosed with a brain tumor (non-cancerous) 4 years ago, and doc told me yesterday that it is time to remove the tumor as it keeps getting bigger and causing my brain to swell, and told me that he has my surgery scheduled for 2/24/10....that is coming up quick! I have health insurance and short term disability with my job, however at my job when out on short term disability you only get paid 60% of your regular salary, I know because I was out 2 weeks in August for female surgery. The problem is, I am on the cusp of bankruptcy, I owe another $140 to my attorney and then he will file my case.....I have been chipping away at this $1875 since this past summer. I drive an 11 year old car and I live in a mobile home, so there definately no extravgances here. I am paying my mortgage about 30 days behind and at one point at the end of the year got I 2 months behind and had to come up with $2300 in 1 month time to cure the default. Needless to say, there was no Christmas, but there also was not much left even for food.....I was able to get a food handout from a local church but it wasn't much. My thinking is that if I am already struggling while working full time, how will I ever be able to make it when I am off work for 1 whole month at only 60% of my wages? I hate being in this position, but medical bills and being left by my fiancee early last year, put me in a financial downward spiral.....I have had to pay everything on my own and I would venture to say I probably have a credit score of -100. I have even started renting out rooms in my house, yet it still isn't enough. Is there ANYWHRE, where I could get help with my mortgage, electric and maybe some food? I do have bank statements/paystubs and etc to backup my case, but where would I go to get help without having to go through a lot of red tape, as I don't have a lot of time? I am not on any public assistance programs and never have been as I have always made too much $, so I really do not know where to even begin? If anyone out here has been through a sugery/illness for an extended period of time or if you know someone who has and they were able to get some kind of help, so they didn't end up without electricity, hungry or homeless, I would be very interested in hearing about your experience and how you were able to get help. One last thing, I do have a minor child in the home and yes, I do get child support for him, but it's really not that much. I live in Tampa, Florida (Hillsborough County) Please advise and thank you for reading.

Voting Question: If you have lots of insurance, is an emergency fund really necessary?
(Fri, 04 Dec 2009 20:20:23 GMT)
We have employer-sponsored insurance, specifically: medical, dental, life, and AD&D. The medical and dental are COBRA-eligible. We also have auto, home and umbrella insurance, and will soon be purchasing individual life and disability policies. Additionally, if we lost our jobs, there would be some severance pay or unemployment. We also have a 3-mo. emergency fund. We pay our credit cards off every month. Our mortgage et al. loans account for 22% of our spending. Do we really need this emergency fund? If so, should it be 3-mo. or 6-mo.s? I know 6-mo.s is the recommendation, but I can't think of a situation where we would ever need to tap into it based on all these other sources of coverage. What am I forgetting?

Voting Question: College Emergency 911!?
(Wed, 04 Nov 2009 07:03:41 GMT)
I am at my wits end, i am going to school full time and working part time, My grades are suffering because I cant afford the medicine for my learning disability, my paycheck isn't enough to cover the mortgage anymore i have a stack of final notices and disconnect notices and have bounced 4 checks at an attempt to survive which have all failed. IDK what to do anymore at one time I believed college was the only answer to better myself and my career but at this point in my life it almost seems as quitting school and going back to work full time is the only way out.Going to college has drained me financially and since I am single the financial aid I received wasn't even enough to cover all of my tuition and books.I cant afford health insurance to get the medicine and medical help that I need. My stress levels are maxed out and my nerves are worn thin. Please if you have any advice or guidance to offer it is greatly appreciated.

Voting Question: Can our country sustain with our current health care system?
(Wed, 21 Oct 2009 23:22:41 GMT)
With medical costs taking a greater and greater percentage of our incomes, when will the breaking point come? With more and more people going uninsured, whether by choice or because the cost for insurance is out of reach, how can our government survive? Since our laws prohibit turning away emergency care for anybody who walks through the hospital doors, someone has to end up paying those bills. Many people are struggling to merely pay their mortgages or rent, let alone save cash for that $50,000-$100,000 hospital bill that comes in the mail after some accident or extended hospital stays. The uninsured might often find that it's easier to declare bankruptcy, kicking the burden right back to the American taxpayer. And for the uninsured with jobs, sure, if a judgment is placed against them, the medical bills can be garnished from their wages. (Exceptions are: North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas and Pennsylvania) But then legal costs pile on top of medical costs and large medical bills will still go unpaid. That does not even include the costs of deferring care for disease. People who are diagnosed with serious illnesses can end up being disabled because they are not getting the care they need or perhaps don't even know they have a serious illness until it is symptomatic because they do not get routine checkups. Once they're on disability, we will be paying even more than we would have if they had been able to get preventative and necessary care. It seems to me that our money would be better spent to keep people healthy, working, and paying taxes than it would be to let their medical conditions deteriorate to the point of disability. IF we did not already have laws stating that hospitals must render care, that people can shift their debt to the government through bankruptcy, or that people can collect disability and welfare, our current system might be sustainable. But unless these policies are reversed, how will our country sustain itself with our current system? Memphis--insurance companies are profitable only by collecting more in premiums than they pay in claims. It's the UNprofitable people who are getting kicked back to the taxpayers. That is unsustainable and is, in effect, subsidizing the health care industry. The government is already heavily involved in paying for these problems, but it's the insurance companies that are receiving payments from health care. The Dark Knight--increasing revenue is the only way to pay for increasing expenses. With our current system, tax increases are inevitable. Omega57--although I'm not sure if the proposed bills would make things worse, a single payer (Medicare for all ) system seems more logical to me. It is a political hot potato, just like deportation for illegal immigrants was 30-40 years ago when it actually would have been a viable option, but it seems much more straightforward than what is happening right now.

Resolved Question: Does the USA offer any type of Maternity Allowance through Social Security or any other agency?
(Wed, 14 Oct 2009 20:37:13 GMT)
I am 12 weeks pregnant with twins, and I have no disability insurance. I am an Elementary School teacher, but my district offers no maternity pay and laughed when I asked if I would be offered any help should I be placed on bed rest. I am concerned that I will not be able to pay for my mortgage, bills, and daily needs. Is there any assistance out there for someone like me?

Resolved Question: My grandmother bought a house for my mother to stay in. She passed away 5 years ago with no will.?
(Tue, 29 Sep 2009 00:43:56 GMT)
My mother still makes the mortgage payments and keeps insurance on the residence. How would could she get the house in her name? Would she need to re-finance? She doesn't think she could get the low interest rate she is paying now and is on disability. The residence is in Florida. Should she wait and pay it off?

Resolved Question: Is there any financial assistance for breast cancer patients?
(Sun, 27 Sep 2009 17:46:33 GMT)
A co-worker of mine was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year. She is in her early thirties, married with two young daughters. She had a bilateral mastectomy followed by chemotherapy and will be starting radiation therapy this week. Her family is now facing serious financial difficulties. She is presently collecting disability insurance, which only pays a fraction of what she earns. The company that her husband works for is not doing well due to the recession and he has taken a cut in pay. They do not think the business will continue past the end of this year. They are two months behind on their mortgage payments. There are plenty of groups that provide mammograms and medical assistance but she can’t find any programs or charities that can offer assistance or a loan that would tide her family over until she returns to work. She has contacted the Sussex County (New Jersey) department of Health and Human Services but was told that they make too much money for any assistance. I contacted 211 and they said the same. This is a perfect example of the type of family that falls thru the cracks in the system. They are / were able, with two salaries, to provide for their family with little left over after the monthly bills to put into savings or emergency fund. They do not live lavishly. The stress of possible home foreclosure cannot be helpful with her recovery. Please let me know if there are any resources for women in her position. I will then forward that information to her.

Resolved Question: Help me decide what to do to feed my family please!?
(Mon, 21 Sep 2009 21:49:36 GMT)
This is the real deal. My husband is a general contractor and has been out of work for almost a year. We can no longer afford our overhead expenses like business liability insurance and advertising and now have to let the business go under and let his license go inactive. Although he is a very talented and well-referenced carpenter--there is simply no work in our geographic area--we live in the highest impacted construction job-loss area in the country. He cannot file for unemployment because he is self-employed. Although I work, my hours have been cut at my employer of 13 years and I am currently on disability for an injury that prevents me from seeking other employment at the moment (though I plan to get a second job as soon as I heal--if I can find one). I am essentially supporting my family on my disability pay--which isn't much. We're going to lose our house since we can't pay our mortgage right now--my husband was the primary breadwinner. I estimate 3 more months maybe before we'll be homeless. The immediate problem is that our savings have finally ran out. We had a full year of our expenses in the bank and now it's finally gone even though we budgeted very carefully. I now have to decide whether I should go ahead and let my car go--this would free up the $532 I pay per month plus an additional $110 in car insurance. My husband and I would then have to share his paid-off truck but at least I'd have more money for food. I have a 3 year old I need to feed. I have 2 days worth of food left on my house and no money. I've applied for food stamps, but it isn't going to come fast enough. What would you do? I have never been in this position in my life. I don't know what my options are. I am not a troll. I really need some options. I don't need to hear that we're losers or deadbeats--3 years ago, my husband and I had a combined income of more than $130,000 per year. We don't have any other debt besides our cars and mortgage--we've just fallen on hard times due to the collapse of our respective careers and the severe unemployment crises in our area. Compassionate, helpful answers would be sincerely appreciated. Our newly-remodeled **very pretty** house has been on the market for 2 years. We haven't had a single offer and have been through 3 different realty companies. We live in a waterfront community with very high taxes and flood insurance requirements. No one is looking at these houses. 4 houses on my street have gone into foreclosure in the last 3 months and the other 8 are all for sale. It is a saturated market. I do not have high hopes even for a short sale.

Resolved Question: Can I afford a new more expensive house?
(Tue, 08 Sep 2009 13:54:25 GMT)
We would like to buy a home for $230K. We currently have $43,000 to put down as a downpayment. With this new mortgage, taxes and insurance and all other monthly expenses we would be breaking even at the end of the month (technically $50 up each month but we'll call it even). Just as another note my expenses include normal stuff like clothes, groceries, etc and: $100 towards a college fund for each child/month 18% into 401K allowance for surprise car maintenance $500/child/year for classes of their choice like music, rec department life insurance and disability insurance This is all based on my salary of $64,000 plus an annual bonus of 6% (this year it is 8%). So as is this is pretty tight only allowing for $50 give each month (however it push comes to shove we could save money by getting rid of cable $50/month, cutting out vacation ($250/month). Now here is where our mind is a little more at ease. #1 We currently own a home now and are in the process of selling it. Once sold we will have $25,000 in our savings account (and that's if we sell it for much less than we are hoping). This could be our buffer if we need extra money one month. #2 Currently my husband is a stay at home dad to our 4 year old girls. He is in the process of looking for a job, so any money he does make will be extra since as said above everything is being paid with my salary. We are hoping within the year he will find something. I know the job outlook is not good now but even if he worked part time and made $15,000/year that is all extra money. So, I feel like we are being responsible in the fact that we are buying a house that we can afford on just my salary (even though it's tight) and that we still have $25,000 in the bank and my husband will be working soon. But then our minds go back to what if I lose my higher paying job what would we do? There is no sign or reason to think that this will happen in the near future but could potentially happen at some point in 5+ years. This is just a possiblity and would only happen if our company downsized or moved to another state (we are not willing to move). I work in the food industry so we haven't been hit as hard as other industries with the weak economy, people still have to eat! So, are we having home buyer jitters or do we have reason to be concerned?

Resolved Question: How to Best Invest $30K for My Future?
(Wed, 02 Sep 2009 06:23:06 GMT)
I really need some financial advice so I'm calling out to all the Financial Wizards out there!!! I am a divorced 47 year old woman, permanently disabled, and receive $1683/mo from Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) as my only source of income ($1780 - $96.40 for Medicare) . It's a long story, but I had to cash out my pension for living expenses while waiting for SSDI and Long Term Disability Insurance to be approved. It was long-ago spent, thus I have no pension other than a lump sum of approximately $30,000 from a medical disability settlement. I own my home and my mortgage is about $920 and includes insurance and taxes. In 2009 my house is appraised, for tax purposes, at $233K, in 2008 it was $212K, and 2007 was $199K. I currently owe ~ $156K. I cannot currently re-fi it due to a tax lien (another long story). So, since I'm operating under the assumption that I alone will be responsible for myself and my finances until I die, I am trying to figure out the best way to invest this money. I realize this is a terrible market right now and won't earn a lot. I can't have all the money tied up so I couldn't access it within, say, 30 days, in case of an emergency. Are any money and retirement savvy folks out there who can give me their opinions? I realize I must make the final decision but some "If it were me, I would ___" scenarios would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Karen

Resolved Question: I am disabled and live in Virginia. Can anyone help me force my husband to pay the agreed spousal support?
(Tue, 01 Sep 2009 02:34:04 GMT)
Hi. I am in a bind and seriously need to find someone who can help me. I am not looking for a handout. I am permanently disabled and last year I found out my husband of 12 years had fathered a child the year before. I was devastated. During the weeks the child was conceived I was in UVA with a major heart attack. I filed for divorce as soon as I could scrape together the money the lawyer asked for. She drew up an agreement that we both signed. In the agreement I relinquished ownership of all motor vehicles including 2 financed trucks that I was cosigner on. Also, I gave up 2 drag race cars that we owned jointly. Admittedly, I was still in shock and extreme emotion distress over my life being turned upside down so suddenly. I honorably stood beside everything I had agreed to. I gave him chances to do the right thing and also stand by his obligations as drawn up in my lawyer's agreement. He was supposed to keep me covered under his health insurance until the divorce was final. He dropped me a month after the document was drawn up. That was 11 months ago. He also agreed to a VERY reasonable spousal support payment of 700.00 a month. My lawyer encouraged me to ask for 1100.00 saying that according to his income that was the calculated amount but I tried to be fair about it, hoping he would pay if the amount was a little more reasonable. He paid 5 months. I have not gotten a dime since March, and that wasn't even the full amount. I have paid for both halves of the divorce just to get it finished. I have sold EVERYTHING I own except for my home which I make the mortgage on out of my disability check. Including the mortgage, electric, phone and homeowner's insurance I pay out more a month than I make. I have exhausted all local financial help and cannot afford a lawyer's help in forcing him to pay me. PLEASE...someone tell me what the correct thing to do is. I desperately need that money. I am behind in the mortgage and can barely afford food and get no help because I couldn't have children. If you need more information I would tell you whatever would help you to help me. I am desperate. Thank you for any help I get. Last night he threatened to kill me. That was new. Also informed me he would rather sit in jail than pay. I am inclined to believe him. I HATE that he could just get off scott free for everything..the money, the cheating, the threats. But I'm even in more doubt now that I can do anything and even though no one else would EVER suspect I am afraid. After 13 years I have seen him do some VERY violent things. I got a restraining order this morning but lets face it...that only protects you so much.

Resolved Question: Why does the British Government only support those who scrounge off of it?
(Wed, 26 Aug 2009 14:40:54 GMT)
I became unemployed in January through ill health. I currently receive £17.50 a week in Disability Living Allowance - and that's IT. I'm not eligible for any other benefits because either my husband works full time, or because I've not paid enough National Insurance this tax year. Despite the fact that I've worked for the last 10 years, and always paid taxes and insurance. If me and my husband were both unemployed and dropping out babies like our life depended on it, we'd be supported by the country we live in. As hard working people who've fallen on hard times, we get next to no help and yet are expected to pay our bills and mortgage on time. Any body have any idea why this is?

Resolved Question: Should Americans Purge Socialism (SS Disability & Medicare) & Fix Our Economy Near/Long Term?
(Tue, 04 Aug 2009 16:20:23 GMT)
I believe the time is right. The country, led by FOX, CNN, & Fiscal Conservatives, is saying ‘NO’ to socialist Healthcare reform & Insurance for 50 Million uninsured. So let’s purge the system of the filthy LBJ socialist programs while the iron is hot! I’m a strong Blue Dog and enough is enough! The plan is simple. Say ‘NO’ to socialist Healthcare altogether. Cut SS Disability & Medicare immediately! Cold Turkey. Convert Social Security to stocks in the Free Market. Reset the Obama agenda & rewind the filthy LBJ socialism our country has been hostage to for the past 50 + years. Morally Bankrupt? NO. The country is ready to say ‘NO’ to expanded socialist healthcare reform for 50 Million Americans who would be better served by the Free Market – let’s say ‘NO’ to the 35 Million Americans 65 & over on existing socialist medical care. 90% of Social Security Disability claims are rejected every year. That means that the 10% who know how to ‘game’ the system are the only ones drawing benefits. Dumping the 10% who gamed the system and the 35 Million over 65 ‘elderly’ into the Free Market is hardly wrong. People in other countries would die to be in our Free Market. This is America – what we ask of the uninsured segment of our population should be fair for all. Unfair? NO. Studies http://www.census.gov/prod/2006pubs/p23-209.pdf show that households maintained by those 65+ have nearly the highest net worth in the U.S. It is time to stop mortgaging the futures of our children for the socialist greed of the elderly. Americans pay to play – this isn’t France. Those on the socialist dole of Medicare consume health services/tax dollars disproportionately compared to Free Market, real Americans – the rest of us. Besides, dumping these folks into the Free Market will do nothing but reduce cost for all of us – including them. For those that have paid into the system for 10 – 55 years – a 1 time Tax Rebate for 50% of their contributions. This would typically average $10,000 to $45,000, or more per worker. We are talking REAL Stimulus here! After ‘Walking the Talk’ on our Conservative Principals, who could say ‘NO’ to dumping all the other stinking piles of warm dog s#@t entitlements in our system? Timing Wrong – Democratic Congress & President? NO. We are riding a tailwind that hasn’t blown this way since 9/11. This Democratic Congress is a paper tiger – weaker, more spineless, and more fractured than it ever has been. Emmanuel, in his focus on count, has watered the Democratic faithful down with ‘New’ recruits scared to take a stand, Fiscal Conservatives flying the ‘Democratic’ flag more for funding than Ideology, & Arlen Specter. We have a Democratic President – over-cautious to drive his platform & scared of the ghosts of 1993/94, and a ‘Neutered’ Speaker of the House. Then we have the Media – FOX, CNN, Scarborough, Limbaugh, & Kristol driving our message of Bail Out fatigue, fear of spending & taxes, fear of deficits, & fear of Gov. ‘Death Squads’ for the elderly to gin their audiences for $/ratings. We also have big Pharma spending $1.5 Million per day driving our message, and all the other enemies of healthcare reform – all driving their person agendas corresponding to our Conservative Principals. The Timing could not be better. The iron doesn’t get any hotter than this.

Resolved Question: Do you support H.R.-3131 to abolish fines for not answering unnecessary census questions beyond basics?
(Thu, 30 Jul 2009 02:54:25 GMT)
H.R.-3131 would abolish penalties for failing to answer questions in the census beyond those required by the constitution, i.e. name, contact info, and how many people reside at the same address. This year the census questionaire contains such intrusive requests for information as: Race of residents, Hispanic Origin of residents, Type of home construction, Age of home, Land area of lot home is built on, Sales figures for agricultural products produced on the property, Type of plumbing in the home, Number of cars, vans and trucks kept at the home, Type of fuel used for heating the home, Cost of electricity, gas, water and sewer used at the home, If food stamps were used in the home, Ownership of home, Rent, Market value of house, Real Estate taxes, Insurance payments for property, Mortgage payment, Citizenship, Level of education, Disabilities, Employment status, Employment address, How do you get to work? What time do you leave for work? Employer, Business type, Type of work, Wages, salary, commissions, bonuses and tips. I know there are a lot of important bills to fight right now, and this one is more a matter of principle, but if you agree with it, will you write your rep to support it? Wendy, without a warrant why do they have a right to my personal info? It would be 'by name' on the census form, wouldn't it? It is intrusive and I don't care what 'good ideas' they might have to use the info, I'm sure those ideas would be intrusive as well. I don't follow M. Bachman per se, but Ron Paul is a cosponsor, as well, and I simply like it. I was planning on paying the $100 fine, but I like this better. And traffic signals are by LOCAL government, where Constitutionally unenumerated regulation belongs.

Resolved Question: How do people survive on social security disability-I can't do my job anymore?
(Fri, 10 Jul 2009 12:42:01 GMT)
I am 48 and qualify for disability. I would get $1100 a month. I am married, but if anything happened (death, divorce) that would be my ONLY income. No savings, I would get nothing from husband either way (long story). I would definitely lose my house, my mortgage alone is more than that. I would like to know how people survive on such little monthly income. How do they pay utilities, rent, car insurance, etc? Rents here are $700+ . Is there anyone living on this amount and how do you do it? I am worried sick about how I will survive. I had been a dental assistant for 30 years-I was good at it and it is all I know. I now have a debilitating form of arthritis and my hands are gettin more crippled. I cannot grip things anymore and that was the brunt of my work. Last month I temped somewhere and dropped an instrument on someone's lip and cut him! He was bleeding and I was so worried he would sue me! I apologised profusely, but was terrified it could happen again, maybe taking someone's eye out! At a complete loss.

Resolved Question: s it wierd that this 40 almost 41 year old woman is interested in a 28 year old male who has a disability?
(Sun, 28 Jun 2009 01:59:43 GMT)
There is this 40 year old woman that I met on yourube. She has aspergers syndrome as do I as well, For the past 2 months I have sent her emails and text messages. She sends me 10 text messages per day. I currently live in the Los Angeles area and she lives in Portland,or. I'm only 28 years old, She keeps asking me over and over again when I coming to Portland,OR to visit her. Currently I'm unemployed as I have been since May 2008. She has been unemployed since July 2008. Currently I live at home with my parents. This woman lives alone. She said if I come to Portland and we get along she may offer me her living room couch to live on and not charge me. She wants to get me out of my parents house. There are some things that I don't like about her. She stopped going to school after 8th grade. At age 15 she got married and had a child. At age 17 she had another child. She didn't raise her kids. Her grandma and father did. Even though she is uneducated she has been able to have a stable employement history. She worked for Mrryll Lynch for 4 years do home repossesment, In that job she worked at a call center and made $3,300 a month and got health insurance. Her job was to call people who were delinquint with their house payments. She had the people with deliquint payments fax her their checking account statements, credit card statements and car loans. If she felt that the people would be unable to make their mortgage payments she had the home taken away from them. For myself I graduated college with a BA 5 years ago. Becuase of my visable disability employers have descriminated against me. The only jobs I have had are retail jobs. Does this sound like a good or poor match? I have never had a girlfriend before because of my visable disability. This woman sounds very tolerant and feels that my differences don't bother her. My parents think this is a foolish idea to hook up with a woman who is 12 years older than me. My disabilities are mild tourettes, mild cp, aspergers syndrome and a learning disability. I have been driving my own car for 11 years. I have never moved out of my parents house before. My parents don't want me to move to Portland. They think I'm a fool as do my friends. She may be too low class for me.

(Tue, 23 Jun 2009 16:08:46 GMT)

Resolved Question: My wife and I are wanting to get a home equity loan. The one big problem we have is....?
(Fri, 12 Jun 2009 06:36:27 GMT)
The big issue we have is that we have bad credit due to myself getting injured and not being able to work for a few years. Also, right before my injury we purchased a house, had a baby that had a disability so medical bills added up, and we had to file chapter 13 about 4 years ago. We purchased our house in the year 2000. Our house is paid off as we more than doubled payments and put extra money we had at the time towards it while we were both working. Our bankruptcy was discharged over 3 years ago. We currently have no credit cards, no auto loans, and no 2nd mortgage or equity loan. The current debts we have are some medical bills with some in collection. Our credit scores are around 590 which I know is very low. We are wanting to get a equity loan or second mortgage to help pay for extensive dental work our son needs and also to get him extra care such as speech and occupational therapy that insurance does not cover. Our house is worth around $135,000 which is paid off. Is it possible to be able to get a home equity loan or second mortgage with such a horrible credit score? My wife is a teacher and I am a union boilermaker now so we do make a decent income. I'm also thinking but do not know for sure that a loan will help improve our credit. Since we have no loans or credit cards I don't see how we could improve our credit which is one of our main goals. We just want to get back on our feet but has been difficult with all of the money we spend to help our son which is our number one priority. Also, if anyone knows of a certain loan company that would work with us that would be great. Making the monthly payment would not be a problem now that I'm back to work. We have been paying off the medical debt quite quickly now but just do not want anymore to go to collection. So I guess my question boils down to will it be difficult to get a home equity loan for around $20,000 or so with our house being paid off and no other debts with poor credit? Thank you so much for your help in this matter. I just think this could get us back on our feet and improve our credit. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you all for the wonderful replies and links! Love Presley..Do they accept borrowers with poor credit. In my question I did mention we have poor credit for reasons mentioned above. I have now been back to work for over a year as a union boilermaker and my wife is a teacher so we do have a steady decent income now. We just need a way to help get our medical debts paid and are hoping a loan will help improve our credit since we currently have no loans. My son also needs extensive dental work on top of speech and occupational therapy so are looking for some extra money for that and some to put in savings for emergencies. Thank you all for being so kind and not judging. I am quite embarrassed for the situation we are in! But my son is number one in my life and will do anything to help him even if it means spending my last penny for that extra speech class! I'm not saying we are bad off, just need a way to get back on our feet and improve our credit and think a equity loan will do it To Stan C, Will my local bank be able to help someone with poor credit. It seems they are far and few between. The one thing that I feel will truly help even with a poor credit score is that our house is paid off in full. Estimated value I'm guessing is around $135,000 and we are thinking of trying to get around $25000. I have heard that if your house is paid in full the minimum you can borrow is $50,000. If so I guess I could just put half of that back towards the loan as long as there is no early payoff penalty. Could you please give me your thoughts getting a equity loan with poor credit with our house being paid off in full? Thank you kindly Sir!

Voting Question: In a financial bind......?
(Mon, 08 Jun 2009 18:54:39 GMT)
I am pregnant and started disability leave April 20th. I have not recieved a payroll check since April 25th. My husband has been our only source of income (appr. $2400/month). I wont get a disability payment until June 12th ($355 weekly). The disablility folks told me 2 weeks ago i should not have left my very physical job until May 23rd. I was not told this in the beginning. Anyways.... We have mortgage $1250, 2 vehicles- $1100, insurance, utilities, etc. The mortgage is paid but we are having trouble keeping up with both car notes. Anybody know of any options with Nuvell credit. The other vehicle is with Citi and they offered to lower the payments til the end of the year i believe but i dont know about Nuvell. I dont want to call and talk to them until i see what options are available. Part - time jobs are out of the question because i am around 6 months and the stuff i qualify for are too physical. Thanks for your feedback. Sonia James are you running some internet scam??? No thanks. So we should trade the $600/month 2004 ford F150 Lariat in for something smaller? Husband was thinking of that option.....

Resolved Question: What other types of insurance do you have besides homeowners, auto, health, and life?
(Thu, 28 May 2009 13:03:20 GMT)
I just bought a house and I'm about to get married. I'm thinking I should have some kind of insurance that could pay the mortgage should I ever become unable to work since I am the main breadwinner and there's no way my soon to be husband could pay all the bills himself. He could probably hack it without the mortgage payment, that would be the killer. Anyone in the same boat? What kind of insurance is the best for this, disability or mortgage insurance?

Resolved Question: Question about homestead exemtion?
(Tue, 31 Mar 2009 14:54:10 GMT)
My husband and I purchased a house in August of last year. I went to file for the homestead exemption at my local courthouse, and due to me receiving disability benefits, she said that we would be tax exempt, therefore, owe no property taxes. We pay our mortgage, insurance, and taxes all in one payment. Should I get the tax portion of this money back from our bank? It's all in an escrow account, and since we don't owe any taxes, shouldn't they refund the money I have already paid?

Voting Question: I need help raising my credit score...?
(Thu, 12 Mar 2009 18:30:28 GMT)
I just purchased my first home in July of 2008. I went on to FICO yesterday to check my credit score and was shocked to see that it is only 510! I'm assuming that my high debt to income ratio is a major factor in this. My mortgage is for 108,000. I have this payment broken down into weekly installments so that at the end of one year, I will have made 13 monthly payments instead of 12. I also put ten dollars extra on each payment. I know it doesn't sound like a lot, but with 52 weeks in the years, that is $520 going right to my principal. It is only in my name, not my husband's. I am, however, listed as a co-signer on our two vehicles. One will be paid off in early 2010, the other in 2011. Each one of those loans has one thirty day late payment from when my husband was out of work on disability. I have two major credit cards in my name, one has a $300 max, and another has a $500 max. These two have 2 thirty day late payments, again from when my husband was out of work. They have since been paid in full, and have zero balances. I also have some negative medical debts listed under my name from when I was in college, and was still a dependent on my father's insurance. I know it was really irresponsible of me, but when the hospital billed the wrong insurance companies, I never took the time to get the paper work right. In total, my medical debts are probably about $800. The latest debt is from 2003. I think they come off after seven years, but I might be wrong. I really don't know what to do. It bothers me that my score is so low. I'm not planning on taking out any new loans in the future, but I really would like to refinance at some point soon on my mortgage. We are paying 6.5% interest on that. If I were to continue making perfect payments on my current loans, about how long will it take to make a significant impact on my credit score? What else can I do? Thanks in advance! Oh, I'm sorry if I confused you a bit. My husband is not permanently disabled. He was out on disability due to having his gall bladder out. He ended up having some serious complications with infections, and was out for a total of four months. We were amazingly able to manage well with paying our bills for most of his disability, but towards the end, well, his check did not come for a total of 8 weeks, and we fell behind. Thankfully, that is over! Thanks for your kind words though.

Voting Question: How can I help brother get back on his feet, with no extra income of my own?
(Fri, 06 Mar 2009 15:36:33 GMT)
My brother was in an accident almost two years ago, his arm was broken. After the cast came off, he still had problems with the wrist. In fact you can actually see the bone move at the wrist joint because it is like it is not attached. He lost his job of seventeen years because he couldn't get back to work before the six month's FMLA protection expired. He lost his health insurance, exhausted his vehicle insurance, cashed out his retirement, spent it all living (and I mean just day to day expenses no frills or splurges). At this point, he has finally received an ACCESS card, while he waits SS Disability determination. He is now three months behind on his mortgage payments, and has no money in accounts left, and no income. He is surely facing foreclosure. Is borderline suicidal at this point because he sees his situation as hopeless. He was referred to a doctor that could do the surgery he needs, however this doctor will not accept the ACCESS card. He received a solutions package from the Mortgage company, but since he has no income now, I am sure that he will not be eligible for a solution, because there is no income to figure. Incidentally he started asking for a solutions package to possibly get his payments lowered way back two years ago, while he still had some income coming in from his S& A insurance. However, he was told that the income could not be considered for a solution. Funny, because the questionnaire they now sent him over two years later, when he is facing foreclosure...lists ALL kinds of income...Unemployment, insurance etc. Does anyone know any avenues to explore to try to save my brothers home, and in turn I am sure his life. I honestly believe if they try to foreclose....he will end his life in that house. He is wild with anxiety, anger, and hopelessness. He has really been giving the run around by doctor's and lawyers at this point...He is not afraid of hard work and has been in the work force since he was 18 years old. He just needs to get his body repaired so that he can get back to work. (By the way, he also messed up his knee recently, while trying to perform an every day task (loading wood into his wood stove with one hand), he ended up dropping the wood on his leg and it hit his knee just right and it is now terribly injured as well. He is only 36 years old. He could have another 35 years to work, if he can get back to work. He loves that house, it's his dream home. He has buried his companion dog on that land....so many stories....

Resolved Question: Will I qualify for mortgage modification?
(Thu, 19 Feb 2009 13:10:50 GMT)
Will I qualify for mortgage modification under the terms in the new Bill? I am current on my payments. How ever the way I currently understand the terms. One must have been responsible and paid payments on time. This has not always been the case with me. For years I always paid on time till my husband came down ill and was out on short term disability (STD) last year. Then when he returned to work he was demoted from management to a line worker. His wages cut and double garnished to pay back health insurance that normally was garnished from his paycheck. (health insurance garnished from paycheck for both the week worked and a week missed plus what employer normally paid). This left about a $90 bring home check for 45+ hours. Then after further down sizing he was terminated in the first wave of lay offs just five weeks after returning to work. For the past several months. My hours has been cut back to 24 hours a week and I recently received word via hand delivery at work that my job will be terminated at any time and no later than April 3rd, 2009. Like all the others who has already been laid off from our plant, I am in fear that I won't get a unemployment check after all these years of service. As I said, we are current with our payments after playing catch up with NO HELP from the bank. We was behind on payments from April 08 to Nov08, fell behind in Dec08 when we was hit by a bill called "underpayment" till Feb09 when we was able to catch up again. I apologize for being a lengthy question, but there is so much to my story as many others. It hard to understand without knowing all the details and there is many I would love to share, but this isn't the time or place to do so. Thank You.

Resolved Question: Need answers about mortgage disability insurance in Canada?

My husband has been on disability since January 2008. We just found out that we have disability insurance on our mortgage so we put in a claim. Can anyone tell me if the insurance has to pay back all or any of our mortgage payments for the past year or does it just start when you claim or is the a time limit? Any information would be helpful.

Resolved Question: Owner finance or should I do a home mortgage with a credit score of 530?
(Mon, 19 Jan 2009 18:58:31 GMT)
My family and I are tired of renting. I have a credit score of 530 and admit that I have a bad history of paying on time. I base it on importance first of all. For example, I pay my rent on time every month but I always pay my loan payment about a week late every month. I am planning on paying off 3 loans that I have with my income tax. I should be saving about $420 a month. I calculated that if I pay $500 a month now in rent, I can contribute an additional $400 in paying for a house payment. My husband also just got on disability so this would help out as well. I should be getting a dollar raise next month also. I make about $21,000 a yr but next year should be better. I have been employed for 2 1/2 yrs at the same place and dont plan on going anywhere else. What is best for my situation? I tried buying a home last year but I went with Wells Fargo Home Mortgage since I have a checkings account there. Basicly the guy there told me he couldnt help me with a 500 score and that owner finance would be my best bet. I have looked into owner finance but havent found too many homes out there. My lease ends in a few months and I am tired of living in the bad neighborhood that we live in. I really need some advice. Which would be my best option? Should I wait for my raise next month? Should I wait a month or 2 after I pay off my loans during income tax? Honestly, we want something where we can get the taxes and insurance escrowed.

Resolved Question: Would like advice about writing a will when there is a second wife?
(Sat, 27 Dec 2008 21:33:57 GMT)
I would like to hear from people in blended family situations about what worked for wills & what was a total disaster. My husband needs to work on his will this winter. My husband was married to his first wife for 29 years & had 5 kids with her, all adults now. His first wife divorced him. My husband has terrific relationships with 3 of his kids, and dicey with 2 of them. I got together with him 7 years ago and we have been married almost 5 years now. I am very close with the 3 kids he gets along with. I am a much younger wife - he is 69 and I am 44. His kids range from age 43 to about 31. My husband is retired and has no money, but he does own an 80 acre parcel of hunting land, and an old divey house with about 20 acres, on a duck hunting lake (not a fishing lake, so it isn't worth as much). He has no life insurance policy and can't get one. We live in my house, which still has a $40,000 mortgage. He has a little less income than I do, from social security. I am disabled & have income from social security and a private disability policy. I have bipolar disorder & have exhausted my treatment options, so it is unlikely I will ever be well enough to return to work. I have no significant savings. His kids he gets along with are healthy & have good jobs & have much nicer things (houses, cars, furniture etc) than my husband & I do. One of the kids he doesn't get along with has lupus & has a lot of problems with that, and is able to work only on & off. The other kid he doesn't get along with is an alcoholic & spends huge amounts of money at the bar & on pull tabs. Neither kid has paid much attention to him for over 10 years, calling only when they wanted something & there are other issues. As I said, I am disabled, and my private disability insurance runs out when I am 65 & has no cost of living adjustment, so its value is decreasing every year. If he leaves me nothing (we can't save much for my retirement age due to our medical expenses) I will be below the poverty line when I am 65. I don't want some explosive situation if he dies before me. He doesn't want to leave much at all to the 2 kids who ignore him. I don't know if this is a good idea. We don't know what would be best regarding the properties - only 2 of his kids would want to keep them, the rest would want to sell them off. What I want to do is have him leave me the 80 acres & I will keep it so his brothers and sons can come hunt it (I hunt with them) and then leave it to all his kids when I die, but they are about the same age as me & I don't know if I can pay the property taxes unless he leaves me a part share in the house on the lake. If he leaves the 80 to his kids, it will be gone for sure & he wishes it would stay in the family (I think mostly this is a hope that won't be fulfilled). The house on the lake has no sentimental value, so he doesn't care if that is sold off. In fact, we may sell it off ourselves when the housing market rebounds. So we have the issue of, what should he do about the 2 kids who ignore him & have mistreated him in the past? How to balance his kids against his second wife? I am hoping other people have advice about what NOT to do & family harmony and all that. Thank you!

Resolved Question: Insurance medical or legal help I am not sure what category?
(Wed, 24 Dec 2008 20:36:15 GMT)
I had an industrial injury at my place of employment, my foreman refused to write up an accident report but told me to go ahead and go to the doctors. I went to the doctors and the comp nurse came out and told me that my HR (human resource person) said they refuse to cover this visit. So i went back to work asked her about it and she said nothing was wrong with me!! I told her she is mistaken and I am going to my own doctor and see what they had to say.. well through a series of events, three doctors later , my family doctor, an orthopedic surgeon, and a hematologist, who all agreed from the series of test that was done that this is a work related incident ,tendinitis and possibly carpel tunnel and tennis elbow, and osteoarthritis irritated by the constant repetitive motion from my job.. I brought my paper work back to my place of employment and they said they had nothing for me to do under the condition of restrictions the Ortho. put me on. So I have been off work sense Oct. 29th, with out pay. I asked my HR how she was going to file this she filed it under workers comp. not medical disability. I was forced to go and see one of their doctors and am waiting for direction.. still not working still not getting s&a or workers comp. and still not getting the medical attention I need to have it repaired. I live in Michigan.. I am two months behind in my mortgage and only by God's grace am I still able to eat and pay my electric ..heat and able to stay two months behind rather than three once i get three months behind i will be put into forecloser. I have worked for this place for almost 20 years, and I work hard for them , I have had injuries in the past but it kinda come with the kind of work we do. I don't know where to turn , why do i need to get a lawer, just to make an insurence company do what they are suppose to to do. If my foreman and my HR would of filed the complaint they way it is suppose to be handled I would not be in this position. Any advice? Should I write Granholm? Isn't she like Workers Comps' main boss? 58 seconds ago - 3 days left to answer. Report Abuse

Resolved Question: What companies offer mortgage insurance/protection for unemployment?
(Tue, 23 Dec 2008 20:15:31 GMT)
I'm looking to obtain mortgage insurance/protection on my home in the event either my husband or I lose our jobs. Just something that will pay the monthly bill until a new job is found. I see a lot of sites offering it and a lot more that just offer protection in the event of disability or death. Are there any companies that are recommended for this?

Resolved Question: My disability income is less than my mortgage, and I can't pay my bills. Help!?
(Wed, 19 Nov 2008 06:48:51 GMT)
I am a 51 year old man who has been on a disability income from the Government since the 1980s. I have had multiple spinal surgeries for an injury during my twenties, and have been left with metal pins permanently supporting my spinal column and severe spinal pain. I was also diagnosed in the 1980s with HCV (Hepatitis C, a chronic disease of the liver). I live with this disease, and am much better of than many who suffer from it, but I am on a treatment plan that requires the constant monitor of my health and function by a liver specialist. I have a mortgage payment every month, along with electric, gas and water bills. I am not frivolous-- I have the cheapest cricket phone plan, no land line, and no cable. Here is my problem: My monthly disability income does not even fully pay my monthly mortgage payment. I am in collection over old co-payments I was unable to pay to doctor's offices, and for credit cards from years ago. I have a car, which I need in order to get myself to and from my multiple doctor's appointments each month, and no money to put gas in its tank. I have applied for food stamps, and was warded $14 dollars a month. I do not in any way mean to have an ungrateful attitude-- but $14 dollars is simply not enough to live on. For my adult life, I have been a working artist, which is a career that has certainly earned its ups and downs, and isn't appreciably stable in nature. I have still managed to make ends (barely) meet, and to put that extra $100 dollars into my mortgage payment, pay the house insurance, the bills, and to live frugally. As I get older, I am finding this lifestyle more difficult to uphold. No one is buying art at this time, with the current economy. And I am unable to work as I used to. There are days when i am all but unable to get out of bed because of the weakness, fever, and pain that is a part of HCV and chronic cirrhosis. I have Government medical insurance, but I still must pay a co-pay to my doctor every two weeks, and even this $25 dollar sum I am consistently unable to pay. For the past couple of months, my daughter and ex-wife have been helping me to supplement my bill payments. There's no way that can continue, however. My daughter is worried about job stability, and has begun to slide into "the red" with her financial situation. She can't help me at the expense of her own debts and bills. My ex wife simply cannot and will not persist in helping to alleviate these debts. All I want is to survive, at this point, and in any way possible, to keep my home. It is all I have. If my mortgage payment exceeds the totality of my actual income every month, is there any way to adjust this without losing my home? If I were even physically able to get work, all of my medical insurance would be cut off, and I can't survive without medical insurance. Any help would be very, very greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Resolved Question: My mom keeps asking for money...what should I do?
(Thu, 13 Nov 2008 21:25:51 GMT)
I know that people have asked this question before, but I was hoping some different answers. I moved out of mom's house about 4 or 5 years ago. When I was living there with her, I helped her pay off all her debt (hospital bills, mortgage, unpaid utilities, etc...). She has her own business at home that doesn't completely cover all the bills. After I moved out, I was still giving her money whenever she asked for it...$200 here...$900 there. Last year she could not work at all due to a disability. I worked throughout the semesters at college and worked 70 hours a week during the summer to support her. She got better, but not fully...enough that she could work again. She finally received disability money but it still doesn't cover the monthly bills for her. So I still give here money ever few months. To this point, I have given her enough money to have been able to pay off my own debts. I haven't been counting, but it's been well over 10 grand over the last 6 years. I have student loans, credit cards (some of which I have used for repairs on her car, and her mortgage). I hate doing this, but when I don't have enough I ask my fiance for some money to give to her. I have an okay paying job as an intern, but besides those bills we just bought a house. Also, I am planning a wedding. There are several other things that I need to get to take care of myself, but have delayed in getting those (primarily new glasses, contacts, other medical stuff). I can't afford health insurance. I have told her many times to get rid of cable and internet, to quick smoking just so she can use it for the mortgage. I think those things are luxuries and I don't have them. But she always says that she doesn't have anyone to talk to at home and she's lonely without the tv and internet. She's told me that she feels terrible for always having to ask her daughter for the money and has cried many times for it. She's told me that she feels ashamed for having to do this. I know that she's my mom and I owe her my life, but I'm just so tired from working my fingers to the bone for her. When I mention that she should get a job, she said that probably no one will hire her. I'm tired of doing badly at college because I am always working so many hours to be able to give her money. I'm tired of not being able to buy myself nice things even though I have a decent paying job. I'm tired of having to choose giving her money instead of paying my owns debts off. I'm graduating next month and I'm worried that she will start asking for money more often then. She's an adult and adults deal with their own problems. I want to tell her no, but I would feel too guilty to do so. Please tell me your thoughts.

Resolved Question: Is it really that hard to imagine or even try?
(Mon, 27 Oct 2008 20:22:24 GMT)
The past few months I have been thinking alot in relation to the upcoming election and the status of the U.S. in general. But I guess what sets me apart from most is that while many are deep in the trenches of the subprime mortage mess, my mind has been on those who have always been and will most likely continue to be less fortunate. To me, it seems that these Citizens are The Forgotten Ones - easily shuffled to the side as always when those who have wealth have discovered that their money is in jeopardy. We dismissively regard the less fortunate as "lazy," and blame them for their own troubles. They should get a job and work for their own health insurance and to put food on the table. Because it's easy to think that when we have enough to pay our rent, see a doctor, and put more than enough food on the table, "it could never happen to us." "I have an education and I work hard so that I will never ever be in that situation." It's a great thought, one which fortunately most are correct in thinking. However, there are many who unfortunately discovered that they were wrong. Who knows why exactly it happened - perhaps they fell ill with a debilitating disease of which they had no control over, which caused them to lose their job, therefore their health insurance. The hospital bills begin to pile up, as well as utilities, rent/mortgage, etc. Then the day comes when the last penny of savings has been spent on every day needs. Because of this disease, they are unable to return to work. The medicaid barely covers their needs, and the $660 Social Security/Disability check that arrive once a month is just not enough to make ends meet. They remember the days when a trip to the grocery store was merely a chore, and when they never thought twice about what they threw into the cart. Nowadays they have carefully choose only what they need. They feel the $1 increase in a gallon of milk as if it were a punch in the gut. As they walk down the streets, clothed in a threadbare jacket because they can no longer afford a new, warm coat, they pass people that could have very well been former coworkers. Dressed in sharp suits and shoes that click-clack down the sidewalk. In an attempt to regain some sort of relationship with their former self, they smile at the passerby. But instead of a returning smile, they hear the passerby mumble quietly under their breath "Lazy, stupid bastard. Why don't you just go get a real job?" You see, it -could- happen to you, no matter how much you may prepare. Systems Fail, as well as your health and other life-altering events. All I'm asking is that before you go and make a judgement about that person on the street, you take a few minutes to think about what could have possibily put them in that situation. And really - how hard is it to help? It can be donating a coat, old clothes, a few dollars or just a smile. Or realizing that the public programs that exist are not there to simply "steal your tax dollars," but are helping that person who could have been a former coworker. Or a friend.

Resolved Question: Why were people with disability was blamed for the Sub-Prime mortgage?
(Mon, 29 Sep 2008 14:45:46 GMT)
It not completely make sense that most blame was placed on the people with disability. I know there too many people without disability took avantage of their greedy motive when come to house. It like.... wow I going to live in this house and have lot of money to do it. Here I am sitting down being poor with having trouble with jobs because of my disability. I don't get. Why blame most of the fault on people with disability? Your comment please? Don't forget that I post a question about medical insurance. I like to know some answer to that. Dansinger. I am not the one who said it. I am not digging it up. If you know something, tell me otherwise I think it too much rant on the blame.

Resolved Question: Which of these families deserves government mortgage help?
(Thu, 25 Sep 2008 03:57:13 GMT)
Please tell me which of the following families deserves government mortgage help: A. single mother with three kids. working, never married, child support erratic at best. bought a house in 2006 with a 5/1 ARM subprime loan. can't afford payments now that the introductory low interest rate is ending. B. married couple with two kids. both were working in 2005 when they bought a house using an alt-a loan. she lost her job in 2007 and her new one pays less. his self-employment business is slowing as his customers feel pinched and do without his service due to the "recession". two months behind on payments with reset to higher rate in November. C. married couple without children. Lost their house to foreclosure in 2007 after he was disabled in a work accident. Disability wasn't enough to continue making the payments after his medical costs soared. D. 83 year old widow. Owns her house free and clear, but can't afford the property taxes and insurance because houses in her neighborhood tripled in past ten years due to easy money loans and thus many buyers. Now can't sell as the market has crashed. Six months past due on property taxes. E. couple with two college age children who re-fi'd their house in 2006 to pay their childrens' tuition. Closed a 401k to make tuition payments in 2007 and borrowed from relatives to pay again this fall. House is 45 days past due but older child doesn't graduate until December 2010. F. Retired couple whose only regular income is small pension plus social security. Their retirement assets in stock market have taken a beating this year. Borrowed in 2004 against their house when he had a heart attack that caused his early retirement [which crippled his pension]. Rising costs of gas and food have made them 30 days past due and they have no way to catch up without further damaging their retirement assets. G. Manager and stay at home wife with two children in public school. He lost his job two years ago -- it was outsourced to China. Now works at Home Depot, but the money isn't 1/3rd of what he used to make. Still looking for that managerial job, which costs hundreds a month in extra costs. they've gotten their foreclosure notice and are thinking about filing bankruptcy to buy time. H. Market trader and retired wife who lost $125,000 when his short sales were arbitrarily ended by SEC order in this financial crisis. Hasn't made trading profit since last October. Now two months late and getting daily phone calls from mortgage servicing company asking for money he can't pay if he is ever to recover his losses in the markets. I. Retired couple who saved and planned out their retirement for last 25 years. Retired in 2007 owing nothing, but living off 401k payouts and social security. their assets are down 25% so far in this recession and they'll have to cut costs next year, which means short selling the house into increasingly bad market and paying bank off on the loss over next who knows how many years [if ever]. J. Sixty something widow whose assets were wiped out by husband's death via Alzheimer Disease and private nursing home for 4 years. Has only Social Security now as all their retirement assets except the house went to pay the nursing home. Took a mortgage in 2005 to pay off the husband's medical bills and burial. *** please tell me which, if any, of these families deserve government help in staying in their home or recovering their home. This question has no political point to make and is solely to gather information regarding what the Y!A public thinks America's public policy should be. While all of these situations are real to some family, I carefully crafted each of them to show a case where the people involved arguably are losing or lost their home because some other part of our economic system had a breakdown. In theory, none of these deserve government mortgage help, imo. Some of them needed either less or more government in some other part of their lives and because of that issue, were financially savaged to the point of losing their home. Afaic, the mortgage industry should NOT bear the brunt of other failures in America's systems -- doing so only distorts the economy even further. Did the mortgage industry have its own failures? YES. Mostly, they had a failure of spine. They didn't stand up to Congress and HUD in the 1990s when both needed to be told that their rules were requiring the banks to write bad loans that shouldn't have ever been made. Big government needed to be told "NO".

Resolved Question: How to go about settling a delinquent credit card account and old medical bills?
(Sat, 20 Sep 2008 04:55:34 GMT)
Helping someone w/ a financial crisis due to disability. Basic details- Card had a 3,000 balance. Company doubled payments due to a change in their terms in which the borrower was not at fault. Borrower unable to pay the higher payments. Late charge of $100 added onto the larger min. due each month. No payments made on card for 9-10 months. I believe it has just gone to collection and the amount is closer to 6,000 with all the fees. Numerous medical bills from 2-4 years old- most with collections or at least the collection dept. of the hospitals, etc. IF this person was given say, 5K what are their options? NOT worried about credit rating as it is ruined for a long while any way. Want to avoid being sued and having wages garnished as they are just enough for mortgage and basic necessities like food, electric and gas. Hopefully disability will be approved but no guarantees. Husband has income, wife is disabled. Card is in wife's name only and medical bills are hers- they are the balances after his insurance OR special medical needs that insurance did not cover. Not sure if name makes a difference on either or not. Just wanting a bit of peace of mind and to know paycheck is secure while doing all they can to stop collections and settle these debts best they can and move forward. Wife will never be able to work again and husband is working, litterally 80 hours per week plus a daily 2 hour commute, so gas is about $400 a month which doesn't help. Will credit card companies knock off the late charges, etc. and say accept the original 3K or less? How to go about asking? In writing? calling the card company or the collection agency? ANY help is sincerely appreciated. I care and they are struggling and had a great financial picture before her illness. Not interested in debt settlement companies or consolidation loan. Thanks so much!

Voting Question: Why are insurers allowed to violate civil rights?
(Sun, 31 Aug 2008 11:25:50 GMT)
I recently shopped for a new car insurance policy. Why are insurers allowed to discriminate on the basis of age, sex and disability when determining premium rates? Doesn't that violate the 14th Amendment? For that matter; why should they charge more to a 50yr old single male high-school grad, having driven for decades, w/no claims, paying rent for home & doesn't drink or smoke while they charge LESS to a 25yr old single/married female, w/4yr college degree, homeowner (mortgaged to the hilt) & 1 claim and DOES drink & smoke? From what I've read (from a US Supreme Court justice & the OHS); ALL citizens of the USA are legally obligated to ".. support, defend & protect the US Constitution against all enemies - foreign & domestic". That ALSO includes the 'Bill Of Rights'. Even the (former) Bureau of Immigration stated the Oath of Citizenship (to-which all citizens are subject) ".. is a legally enforceable contract and ANYONE who violates that contract may be forceably deported to whichever nation will accept them". That means even private business owners & employees may not violate the provisos to the 14th or any other amendment.

Resolved Question: Death and disability mortgage insurance?
(Thu, 14 Aug 2008 18:52:27 GMT)
My husband and I just bought our first home. Now we keep getting mail from all different companies saying that we qualify for this 'death and disability' insurance. It sounds like a good thing to have, in case one of us dies or is disabled, but o we need this insurance, or is it a scam?
