Resolved Question: Should obesity be considered a disability?
(Wed, 17 Mar 2010 13:29:41 GMT)
Should obesity qualify a person to receive SSA? I've read that you can't qualify on obesity alone but if there are underlying factors such as cardiovascular issues, high blood pressure, or diabetes. How are these consider underlying issues, aren't they caused by being overweight?

Voting Question: Sixth nerve palsy & pregnant?
(Tue, 09 Mar 2010 01:47:17 GMT)
I started having double vision about 2 weeks ago. My OB immediately hospitalized me because my blood pressure was sky high & he feared pre-eclampsia. Labs came back normal & he referred me to an opthomalogist who diagnosed sixth nerve palsy. I have had bloodwork, an MRI & they have ruled out diabetes. All is normal. I am now working with a Maternal fetal physician who called me her "project" & I am seeing a neurologist tommorrow. I am seeing 4 doctors now & not one knows when or if my vision will come back or if the 2 issues are even related. They have me on blood pressure meds & are monitoring me twice a week. I am 32 weeks & MFP says she probably won't let me go past 37. I was just wondering if anyone has heard of this & when the vision problem resolved. Most think when my BP is under control it will come back but no one has that much experience with it. Also, unfortunately they won't release me to go back to work & I don't have disability through them. Are there any other financial compensation options anyone is aware of?

Resolved Question: Question about Welfare ,,,( ireland )?
(Thu, 04 Mar 2010 15:17:24 GMT)
hi, i would like to know if there's anyone that can help me on something. My daughter who is 7 has recently been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and needs constant monitoring etc, by me. The nurse gave me a form for domicillary care allowance and also said i might be entitled to carer's allowance. Does anyone know if i would be entitled to the carer's allowance, as the citezen's advice who i rang told me that it usually is paid to people who have children with severe disabilities or need constant care. Would having a child with diabetes type 1 fall into that category. Sorry if this seems that i'm just out for money-grabbing as i'm certainly not. it was her diabetic nurse who suggested all this to me thanks.

Resolved Question: The Benefits Of Animal Testing?
(Tue, 02 Mar 2010 02:00:26 GMT)
Any comments/Suggestions would be greatly appreciated In 1990 the founder of PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, Ingrid Newkirk told a reporter that if an AIDS cure resulted from animal research, “we’d still be against it.” I appreciate the efforts that animal activists put forth on securing animal rights, emphasizing that animals are not ours to be tested on. However, when it comes to ensuring human life, I disagree. Should we not take the best lead we have to cure a disease like AIDS, which has already killed 28million people? Should we take thousands of animals and place their lives above millions of people, which they have saved and will save? Scientific effort based on animal testing is a sacrifice that must be made to pledge the safety of human health. Without these mammals for testing, medical progress crucial to the safety and development of medicine and food will drop severely. One of the advantages of animal testing is the ability for medical procedures to be run safely and efficiently on humans after testing it on animals. Open-heart surgery, which is now the most common form of cardiac surgery in the U.S according to the US Department of Health, required about 20 years of animal testing on cats by Doctor John Gibbon of Jefferson Medical College to assure safety and efficiency. Unfortunately, not all medical procedures pass through sufficient testing before entering the market. The Food and Drug Administration distributed a jaw implant called Vitek in 1983, without sufficient testing. This malfunctioned jaw implant resulted in thousands of people suffering from severe pain when their jaws were literally torn apart, which ultimately leads to eating disabilities. One year later, the Vitek Incorporation tested the Vitek jaw on canine dogs, which resulted in immediate jaw damage and erosion. Had the FDA required such testing, many painful and permanent injuries would have been prevented. In the past, many diseases like Polio and Diabetes, which killed hundreds of thousands of humans, seemed unstoppable. The only way scientists were able to combat these diseases successfully was through animal testing. One of the best accomplishments made with animal experimentation was the vaccine for polio developed in1955, an epidemic that killed about 60,000 people a year, targeting primarily children. A doctor named Jonas Stalk was determined to find prevention not with his patients, which several scientists tried and failed, but within his lab. Injecting approximately 17,500 monkeys with the disease, he was finally able isolate the three viruses that caused polio and developed a vaccine for each that was able to prevent humans from being infected with Polio. Today, people take the wellness and life span of diabetes patients for granted. Before 1969, the fear of severe Diabetes was much, much greater. According to the Nobel Prize Committee and Medical Doctor Andrew Dexter from UCLA, patients back then with sever diabetes were only spared a few more years by following extreme diets and undergoing constant pain. Luckily, two Nobel Prize winning scientist, Frederick G. Banting and John Macleod, discovered Insulin from experimenting on a dog with Diabetes and another dog without. By removing the pancreas, an organ that regulates sugar, of a dog, diabetes developed in the dog a week. However, when injecting the diabetic dog with a pancreatic formula, called insulin, extracted from the healthy dog, the diabetic dog lived a healthy life as long as it kept receiving the injection. This proved to be true in humans as well because patients who died from diabetes had a damaged pancreas. When Insulin was distributed throughout America to humans, patients with severe diabetes with only days to live recovered as long as they kept receiving their injections. Unfortunately, scientists are unable to find a cure or treatment for every disease. Animal testing alone provides a huge potential for scientists to find a cure for today’s toughest diseases like AIDS. First off, scientists require thorough information on the virus before looking for a cure. Fortunately, this was made possible by examining similar immune deficiencies syndromes in mice, cats, and monkeys. One major understanding the AIDS Foundation discovered through animal models was that the AIDS virus is a retrovirus, meaning that it can only duplicate with a special enzyme, or “helper” chemical. The majority of mammals possess these similar enzymes, each producing a different disease similar to AIDS. By understanding how AIDS works from animal models, scientists have better chance to stop the AIDS virus from duplicating. Even though a vaccine is currently eluding us, animal testing still has provided temporary treatments. The Foundation of Biomedical Research discovered blood tests that are run on humans to detect AIDS, through animal testing. Multiple drug treatments that allowed patients to live longer were also tested on animal models to secure

Resolved Question: Looking to get some help- physically disabled?
(Sat, 27 Feb 2010 18:05:43 GMT)
Hi, I am 16 years old and physically disabled. I have a disability called Cerebral Palsy, also known as CP. I have two out of the three types of CP. One is Spastic CP, which causes stiff and difficult movement. The 2nd kind I have is Ataxic CP, which is a disturbed sense of balance and depth perception. The Spastic CP is the most dominate in me. I also have epilepsy which is the condition of taking two or more seizures. Because of the epilepsy, I have headaches almost every day as well as this unexplainable pain in my face when I have headaches. When I tell my neurologist, he looks at me as if I am crazy; sweeping the issue under the rug by saying “Your medicine will take care of it.” I live with my two retired elderly grandparents, who are in their mid 60s. I have a younger brother. My Dad is working out of state to provide for us. He and my mother aren’t together, and she does as she pleases. I was wondering what if any organizations could possibly help my grandparents get a wheelchair accessible vehicle that has a lift, and space for a wheelchair. (Like one that has a row of seats taken out, or really a single seat) It would ease the stress of getting me places, such as doctor’s appointments, and etc. Currently, they’ve a ’05 Chevy Impala, and each time my chair needs to be put into the car it needs disassembled. My chair is motorized, so it itself ways at least 45 pounds, each tire weighing 50, and the battery weighing 25. My grandfather has heart disease, and diabetes. He has trouble lifting the equipment but he has no choice. Also, there’s a pit in my backyard. It’s where a pool used to be when I was younger, but that my parents just let go when they were raising me. If there’s an organization out there that could help get that up and running again, it would be great. There’s no cure for what I have. Surgery is an option, but I’ve had my fair share already in life, and it wears off. I also don’t like being sedated- it scares me. I am able to walk in the water. No fear of falling. Water therapy is amazingly helpful. Because my family has no help or support from anyone, and doesn’t know where to begin, the house is often full of stress because I don’t feel well, and my grandmother doesn’t know what to do, but be there for me, telling me everything will be okay. My doctor really is no help on any of this. Thanks in advance for any answers -Isabel

Resolved Question: Is it just me or is this situation annoying?
(Wed, 24 Feb 2010 07:40:14 GMT)
Does it bug you that unemployed (and not looking) people manage to get more things than people who actually work for their money? It seems like the unemployed (and not looking) get more namebrand junk food like cheetos and sodas/pops. They get it for cheap because of food stamps and then they save money when their children go to school because of the free and discount lunches. So the parents buy namebrand clothes and shoes as well as new cellphones when theirs break and other things when they can't even get a job or a job that pays well because they didn't go to college or dropped out. And then they get fat because of said junkfood and then eventually get diabetes and/or a disability paycheck for being so fat that they can't walk. I hate it because my parents work hard, my father is in the Navy and he is resigning soon and is looking for a job to support my family afterwards. I never get free lunches at school and the kids make fun of me for bringing lunches and say that I'M the poor one when they are so poor they get FREE lunch. I am rather sick of the poor kids here in San Antonio who use it to their advantage and make fun of someone who's parents make three-four times as much as they do but don't buy their kids expensive shoes and clothes or tons of junkfood because we don't want to be fat and have diabetes. Yet these people use it as an excuse! I'm sick of them making ME feel like a second-class citizen when my parents are the ones who pay for their lunches through the whole tax deal. Keep in mind that I am not speaking about everyone in San Antonio or all poor people, just the ones that I live with who actually do that. My parents don't buy me cellphones because we can't afford all of the texting costs and stuff while those other kids are texting 24/7 to their other little friends. I'm not upset about the people who actually work hard for their money or don't chose to be unemployed, I am speaking about the people who don't care and don't plan on changing it. Is it just me or is this situation VERY annoying?

Resolved Question: Disabled and need advice.?
(Tue, 23 Feb 2010 01:17:30 GMT)
I am disabled and have once again filed for social security disability. I was dropped out of the system in 2005 because of an error in their system. I have been trying to get it reinstated since it happened. I can no longer walk on my own with out assistance. I also have lost much use of my hands. All this is due to diabetes complications. How can I get social security to reinstate my disability quickly? I have been unable to work for over a year now and have no means to get a wheel chair and stuff I really need. I want to have some independence and not have to depend on others to get around and be outside and mobile. Any advice will be appreciated.

Resolved Question: Im fighting unemployment denial for attendance. My appeal is diabetes(type1) is the cause for my attendance?
(Thu, 18 Feb 2010 23:22:04 GMT)
I recently had my appeal hearing and my former employee had their lawyer show up with the head of hr department. They grilled me and said I didnt notify them of my disease and the problem of attendance due to my disease. Is this unconstitutional? Are my disability rights being violated? I have the right to keep my disease and problem with my disease private, right?

Resolved Question: How can i help my mom fight for disability? Please listen to our story?
(Wed, 17 Feb 2010 23:04:02 GMT)
Hi my name is Darian and my mom was in two car accidents i believe to be 12 or so years ago. They messed her back up pretty bad. She worked for 10 years even so, but it her back ot really worse, and they fired her because she kept getting sick, and her body hurt bad. She was on short disability for a while but it stopped. She had to be on like 10 different medicines and still that didn't help alot of her pain. Now, we're broke and living with our grandma. We can't afford the medicine she needs and on top of all of this crap, she has migraines every day, she can't work if she has them. And i swear if someone says, try migraine medicine i'll delete. Then, she has diabetes on top of this, and if i may say a weak immune system. She can't work because i know her body can't take it. She said she do her best but honestly she can't, the injured part of her back is in her disks, and spine i believe. And again not to mention her migraines. She can't sit up to long so all she can do is lay down for the majority of the day.

Resolved Question: My husband's mother took out disability on him...?
(Sun, 07 Feb 2010 11:17:21 GMT)
My husband's mother took out disability on him from the age of 13-21. He never knew this until recently when he got a letter from the government saying he owed them back $30,000. He had been filing for income tax since he was 18 years old (and they just now realized this.) He is not disabled. He has Type 1 Diabetes since the age of 8. His mother of course denies that she took out disability on him, but when the state sent us copies of the checks they had his name care of his mothers name. they were mostly direct deposit after a few years. his father never knew about these checks either. He just found out for us that that the bank she had listed for direct deposit he was not on the account for. My problem is- we have searched and searched for a lawyer's help. but all of the lawyers say "we are here to get SS, not make it go away." I need help finding out what kind of lawyer we need! I don't understand why we have to pay back $100 a month for the next few years or risk mine and his income tax being garnished! she is the fraud!! she should have to pay. if my husband and his father never knew he was getting social security, and the money was going into an account just in his mom's name, what do we do next?! we are so lost.. and scared. its killing us. lots of sleepless nights. we were denied our first home loan because of this. any help is good help =)

Resolved Question: Proliferative Retinopathy?
(Tue, 02 Feb 2010 03:17:39 GMT)
We're in a family crisis my nephew is still dealing with his health which is going south. If he applies for social security disability, what are his chances of being approved for this vision disease? His specialist told him chances of saving his sight are very slim with the hemorrhaging. His wife has been emotionally distraught all weekend since he may have to quit his job. She claims he's done well with his diabetes losing over fifty pounds so far. I don't know what to tell them.

Resolved Question: Diabetic Keto Acidosis- I have lost 1/2 my hair in 3 months, Im worried?
(Thu, 21 Jan 2010 06:11:20 GMT)
I have searched on yahoo answers and have found that hairloss is common after going through Diabetic Ketoacidosis, however- my hairloss continues to fall out and isnt slowing down. In October I was Diagnosed with DKA upon admittance to the ER because my head doctor mis diagnosed my diabetes and put me on steriods which put me up to a 900 sugar level. From my symptoms, I was believe to be in DKA for over a month before my sugars were stabilized, and have been since October. However, I didnt lose hair before November, then in November I started losing ALOT of hair. I discussed this with my doctor in November and he said not to worry about it, however because its still happening and Ive lost half my hair already and continue to lose large huge clumps of hair when I shower- I am concerned that this is growing "out of the norm" and into the problematic stage. To be frank- I have alot of hair and its thick- so my hair appears normal now- not thick anymore. And I Have no balding spots, which is good. Now- I know I should see my doctor, expect for the fact that I Have no job, no money and no family assistance to help me because I am an only child with no relatives with no job because I am on disability for my Multiple Sclerosis- this is why I am asking for advice from yahoo answers instead of going to the doctor because I cant afford it this month- and by next month I am afraid about losing even more hair. So my question to you guys is- when you experienced hair loss- did you lose half your hair? When did the hair loss stop? By 3 months should my hair loss be stopping? What if anything could they do if I went to the doctor? Hair loss is not genetic in my family- so I know its diabetes related- I just dont know how to stop it! Thank you guys soo soo much!!! Angela :)

Resolved Question: Does type 1 diabetes qualify you for SSD or SSI?
(Thu, 14 Jan 2010 18:45:35 GMT)
My husband has had diabetes since he was very young. He has been layed off work for over a year now and I am also unemployed. Our only income are his unemployment checks. He has no insurance and we cannot regularly afford insulin (he needs 2 vials a month), test strips, syringes or doctors visits and his health is rapidly deteriorating. We applyed for medi-cal but they said he makes too much on unemployment and gave us a share of cost. He is constantly looking for a job but the only ones he can get call backs for dont pay more than unemployment and wont pay the bills, he is getting sicker. My question is, will my husband qualify for Social Security Disability or Social Security Insurance based on his type 1 diabetes? And if a person does qualify, does SSD or SSI cover medical needs? We are young and invision so much better for ourselves than a life on social security but we have to do something to make it through this rough economy and lack of health care.

Resolved Question: I am really upset, what should I do?
(Mon, 11 Jan 2010 22:30:59 GMT)
ok, I had a huge fight with mom. We are really poor right now, and live in a tiny town, with terrible schools, so I am homeschooled. We are living in a houce that is built in 1840's, and has holes in it everywhere, the bathroom is missing about 13 sqft of flooring. the kitchen cabinates smell, we have tried everything. The bathroom, also has no sink, the tub faucet is a pair of plires. The water heater only lets you have about half a ub full of water at a time. The front door's glass is held together with tape. I could go on and on. Anyway my father promised when he bought it, that he would pretty it up (we only bought it because like so many others, our old home got forclosed on, and the house was only 18 thousand dollars) He now goes hunting every day he is off work, only to give the meat to his friends. He won't fix the house up, and we cannot get it on the historical commision yet, because it is not finished. Mom and I want to move to a bigger town, where I can go to school, and there are things to do. (our town is like i said really tiny, to get to the nearest super walmart, we have to drive an hour there and back. ) We cannot sell the house as is, because it is not finished. Dad started fixing it but stopped halfway through, but so far it looks worse than it did to begin wiht, becuse everything he uncovered, needs fixing. Mom, is tired of witing for him to fix it and is tired of living like this. Anyway the fight started because she wants to find a way to make money so we can get out of the house/town. She has type one diabetes (this is not from lack of exercise, and not eating right, it is juvinille diabetes and it is unknown why it occurs or how to cure it) and is insulin dependant, but doesn't want to wait the 3 years for disability, and we don't have money to hire a lawyer. She also has an inncurable blood parrasite, she got in a blood transfusion, at the hospital. She is teh kind of person, who wants to work at home, for yourself..etc. She wanted to talk to me about what she should do about making money. I suggested she just get a job you know at the dollar store/grocery store, or something. So, she then said I dont' care enough about her, and I would send her to work for 30 dollars a day wiht parasites and diabetes. And that I am the reason she doesn't have any money, becuase she stayed home wiht me, rather than get a job. my dad and i joke around with e/o by play fighting/ wrestling, and messing around, like he'll say i can't do this, and I'll call him a this or a that. childishh I know, but thats how we are together. And she said that he is turning me into and ungrateful selfish hateful rude bit**. Mom and i have always been very close. We grew apart a little when I was seven because she went into a coma, and I was scared I would lose her. So i stopped being close and affectionate, so it wouldn't hurt aas bad if I did lose her. Then relationship became tense again when I was 10 because I caught her and dad having s**. Now it is tense because I am a bit**y teenager. But I feel that she is wong, I mean she asked my opinion about how to make money, I said get a job, what is wrong with that? So my question is, am I being hateful expecting her to get a job, even though she has health issues? And, What should I do overall? Thanks everyone, sorry it is long. I cannot get a job, the adults around here cannot even get jobs, no papers are delivered or even printed in the county, and I am only 13, so i cannot get a job until december when i turn 14. Mom and I have done all the minor stuff, it is just replacing cabinates/ceilings/sinks/tubs etc.

Resolved Question: Why do people say someone should 'just get over' a psychiatric disability?
(Thu, 07 Jan 2010 03:00:31 GMT)
if someone can't get over a physical condition like epilepsy, diabetes, paralysis...why are people with conditions such as PTSD, OCD, Depression, etc told to just get over it? This was said by someone with a masters degree in counseling.....as well as read here on Answers there's a difference between working on it and just 'getting over it' instantaneously if someone has a masters degree in counseling they SHOULD know more---.. but its not just him--many so called professionals know less than people without a peice of paper on the wall that says they went to college the guy with the counseling degree says he doesn't act like that when he has his professional hat on...so teh statement that he knows something i don't doesn't fit... this started with a situation i am having with someone with hypochondria and he seriously suggeted i just curse her out and tell her to knock it off this is my question about the person with hupochondria http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=An3lLCGzcR5BvQwtl6IBLA_sy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20100105194754AAT67lT We are talking about TRUE mental illness--noty EVERYONE has true mental illness we are not talking about someone who has a little bit of nervousness or is sad becaue their pet fish died SInce when can OCD be cured in one session...you would be rich and famous if you coudl do this---- Howie Mandel has OCD and has been in treatment for years PTSD can be caused by more tahn war--such as a violent assault

Resolved Question: Is my husband being selfish or reasonable about his feelings towards life insurance?
(Wed, 06 Jan 2010 05:05:12 GMT)
My husband and I had a huge fight about life insurance last night. So much so that I am seriously questioning his morals, compassion, and his feelings of caring for me. Yesterday we received a letter in the mail from our bank, stating that we could get $300K in term life insurance for $80/month. Right now we are both unemployed due to our companies downsizing, and we both had life insurance policies through our employers that ended when we were laid off. When I saw the ad from the bank, I mentioned it to him and told him I thought it might be a good idea for us to have life insurance without relying on our employers for it. He disagreed and said it would be a waste of $80/month right now that we need for other things and that he has no reason to have to make sure at our age (37) that his wife is "set for life" in the event of his death. I was blown away by this, not only because I was raised that spouses are supposed to watch out for each other and make sure each is provided for as needed, but also because if he were to die, I have a disease that has already caused me to have to go on disability once in my twenties, and it could happen again, and also because I only earn half what he does. I couldn't believe he would think that he should take precautions to take care of me. Here is what ensued: This is not about the money, or me getting some sort of high dollar amount when he dies. It's about having a sense of morals and responsibility for your beloved spouse and taking care of that person. I tried explaining this to him repeatedly, and he just kept telling me that life insurance is a waste of money at our age and that it is selfish of me to expect him to "set me up for life" once he is dead and gone. I mentioned that there is the possibility that I could easily become unable to work and provide for myself due to my Diabetes and the complications that can come with it, and that even if I am able to work, I make about half what he does and would not be able to continue to pay the bills, etc. He's always made almost exactly double what I earn. I am astonished at his lack of sensitivity in telling me that I am a "gold digger" and "selfish" because I expect him to feel a sense of responsibility, caring, and compassion towards me enough to WANT to protect me financially in the event of his death. He just doesn't get it. He keeps telling me that I am trying to take advantage of him and that it's ridiculous to expect him to want to protect me by having life insurance when we are only in our late 30's. He says that if he died tomorrow, I would still be able to work and provide for myself, so why should he do it for me by giving me "some huge pay-out to make your life easier"? He says that the money I could get from selling our house (right now we are in the process of looking and have about $100K in savings to put towards a house--this would go to me if we didn't have a house yet) would cover any debts and funeral expenses. But then where would I live? What if the real estate market is flat at the time he dies and I can't get enough for the house to cover everything? He says this is not his problem at that point. He also says once he is working again, the life insurance he'll likely have through his employer should do the job. This is really not about me having millions of dollars if he were to die. What aggravates me, saddens me, and has me wanting to run to the divorce court is his overall lack of compassion and lack of caring for me that he would basically have a resentful and bitter attitude towards making sure I am cared for in the event of his death. Calling me a "gold digger" because I think life insurance is a good idea? What kind of husband doesn't want to make sure his wife will be okay under any and all circumstances?! I am his wife, therefore shouldn't he want to make sure I am taken care of in every way he can? I want to make sure of that for him. I seriously can't believe I married such a selfish, cold person! Am I over reacting? Please be direct, I appreciate it!

Voting Question: Is my husband being selfish or reasonable about life insurance?
(Wed, 06 Jan 2010 04:47:31 GMT)
Resolved Question: Disability discrimination case questions?
(Sun, 03 Jan 2010 00:46:26 GMT)
I'm about to file a complaint of discrimination against my employer. Have sent an email into the EEOC, asking for further info, will call on Monday when they open. Situation is this (sorry it's long, tried to stick to just the facts): Hired as contract work, 20-30 hours a week, driving and setting up events for catering. Worked for a month or two, was going great, boss was talking about getting me benefits, and having me be solely in charge of the driving. Added to insurance, all that. Had a seizure on the job. Was checked out medically, no epilepsy, no diabetes, zero cause to think i'd have another. Fault was thought to be bad diet, low blood sugar that day. Implicitly explained that there's no reason to think I would have another. 1 out of 10 people have a one-time seizure in their life, often for no reason to be found. Instantly, taken off insurance and driving by employer. For Nov and Dec, I was scheduled for a total of 5 hours, each month. Boss has talked to me several times about how "not everyone can be hired" (as he has hired several more people after me, to do my job), and it's unfortunate that they can't give me more hours. They had roughly 50 events scheduled, for a total of 400-500 hours available. So, it is my belief that I have a pretty strong case. All this came about due to an accident, and there's no grounds to think it will happen again. And yet, they haven't terminated me, just tried to get me to quit by cutting my hours, etc. And apparently, he's been telling other employees that I have asthma or something. I'm a U.S. Marine. I'm in great shape. No idea where he's coming up with that. I understand that it's recommended to file a complaint, before a personal suit. Supposing they attempt to settle, or it does go to suit, what would YOU consider a reasonable amount? Right now, I feel I'm due at least the value of the missed wages. Which is roughly $4,000. The fact that he's telling my co-workers lies about my condition, I would think is a separate charge of slander. It's hurting my reputation with the company, drastically. I'm thinking somewhere around $6-8000 or so, total. I'm no gold digger. I'm not after fortunes. It's just been highly insulting, and difficult financially. And completely unjustified. Should I talk to my boss before filing the complaint, or simply file? I doubt I'll get an actual lawyer answering, but as an opinion purely, do you feel I've got a good chance at winning this? mnwomen; I recommend you go read the laws on disability discrimination. To quote the EEOC page: "Disability discrimination also occurs when a covered employer or other entity treats an applicant or employee less favorably because she has a history of a disability or because she is believed to have a physical or mental impairment that is not transitory (lasting or expected to last six months or less) and minor (even if she does not have such an impairment)." I am specifically being treated less favorably, because I am BELIEVED to have a disability. Nothing says you have to actually have a disability. Just being treated differently, because they think you have one, is discrimination. Thanks for an uneducated answer. Anyone else? KW: My case is that my CONTRACT has been broken by my employer, on the terms that he THINKS I have epilepsy. How did you miss the whole point? And how is the employer in the right for cutting my hours, on false grounds? And in the right to tell my co-workers I have things wrong with me that are not true? And in GA, one seizure does not constitute epilepsy, restrictions, or anything else. Maybe I should just talk to a lawyer. You guys seem to be clueless.

Resolved Question: Neuropathy and Disability Benefits?
(Fri, 18 Dec 2009 02:51:54 GMT)
My dad has just been diagnosed with neuropathy. He also has diabetes, poor eyesight, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. He also had a ATI (mini stroke) last year. His doctor mentioned him trying to sign up for disability. I heard that it is very hard to get disability benefits so I was just wondering how likely it would be for him to qualify. I also have another question but this one is about my mom. She is recovering from a brain aneurysm she has surgery and can't talk very well, she can barely walk and she just got her feeding tube taken out but she is having a lot of trouble swallowing. Her doctor told her that he would not recommend that she go back to work. Should she appy too? I go to their house everyday to help them. I hate to see them like this and I was just wondering if my dad should take his doctor's advice and what can I do to help them? Thank you in advance.

Resolved Question: Really Bad Tooth Ache?
(Wed, 02 Dec 2009 02:54:20 GMT)
I'm 50 years old and I'm on disability because of a severe case of diabetes that caused me to almost loose my legs. Diability only comes with (medicare) not (medicade) I live in the state of North Carolina and Medicare doesn't cover dental work. I've called around to every dentist in my local area and they told me to get a tooth pulled out that is so damaged and can be seen only by the gum line I'd probably need a orthosurgeon. I'm obviously on a (set income) my problem is that I don't have any good credit. The cost could come up to around $900.00. I applied at places like (carecredit) even checked with my docter and the local hospital and the hospital told me they can't even help me no matter how much pain it gives me. The docter for the meantime prescribed me a pain reliever for it until I can see a dentist. I also checked with a local university that does that kind of work to train students and they told me I could be placed on a waiting list for 1/2 years.... I was wondering if anybody has any other idea? Or anything else I can do. Please help

Resolved Question: LEGAL HOUSE RENTING......?
(Fri, 27 Nov 2009 23:12:13 GMT)
Ok i will use fake names for privacy sake but here goes. I am Carson and I am renting from a guy named Mark he lives with a woman who is neither his mom nor wife named Juno they are not romantic just older people id say he's in his late 50's and she's probably mid sixties. Her husband is a doctor in a big city in the same state but he lives in atlanta becuase Juno supposedly has too bad of nerves to live out there something may be wrong with her?? Anyways I have been renting from Mark and Juno for about 6 months. I say Juno also because she has paid for renovations on this house and spent alot of money on it so they both have a big say in what goes on and he basically will listen to her if she says something. So like I have been renting from them for like 6 months and everthing has been going ok accept for recently. Ive known this all along but I heard Juno slip up and say Mark isnt suppose to charge rent on the house because of a VA loan?? dont know if I heard it right and i heard he's on disability or something I dont really understand. But she said to him "you know they are only suppose to pay utilities on the house. Oh and a while back she was the one wanting us to just live there for a while just to keep the house up. So they have this guy named todd to do the handy work around the house and do the contract work. And Then this Todd guy advises Mark to charge 600 dollars rent this is before I started living there. And then Mark told us 600 and we said no we cant but we can do 300. Yes it is cheap but they agreed to it and we are young. So anyways we sign a contract which im assuming isnt legal or legitimate since im hearing they arent suppose to charge rent. So basically the contract was month to month and todd put on there may get dog because we said we would and no one ever said anything would be wrong with that. So we eventually got two dogs. So now six months later Todd shows up at my house about 2 months ago and says man we gotta raise the rent to 375 and have to charge 100 each for your two dogs. He said it would be 250 if they were inside dogs.(the stupid thing is he brings up this junk even though they have a fenced in back yard already there which the dogs have been staying in. He has been saying we need to sign a contract for 2 months but he never shows up when he says he will or never answers when he says to call him. So more about todd when we first moved in we found problems with electrical outlets and leaks and the back of the fence being collapsed. Well we would always call and call him and he would answer and sometimes actually come over but would take forever to get around to fixing things. He would be like i got the parts in the truck but i have to go to jury duty or some bs. If he ever actually got around to fixing anything it looked like shit. The fence wasnt pulled tight enough and the the toilet stayed stopped up forever because he stopped answering his phone. So like I said now he is calling and calling and is really pissing me off. He calls me at work and then when i answer and we set up a time to sign the contract or he'll say he's coming over on so in so day he never answers when i call him to come over and never shows up if he does he doesn't have the contract with him. And if we dont talk for a while he will be like carson this is todd man where you been trying to get a hold of you. Like im the one whos at fault. I had to jump on his ass on the phone the other day for that same junk. I know he encouraged the pet deposit and rent raise. Rent raise i have no problem with but pet deposit really pisses me off because they arent even suppose to be charging rent in the first place. I dont know whats up but todd is up to no good. I do know he has diabetes and cant afford medication so he drinks mountain dews to keep his sugar up. I would feel sorry for him if he was a decent hardworking good hearted kind of guy but i honestly dont feel sorry for his crafty ass. And thats the only reason juno and mark are keeping him as their contract and handy man. So anyways i honestly am not scared to sign this contract because its paper to me and i would jump at the opportunity if they tried to send the law after me for not living up to the contract because they supposedly are charging rent when they are not supposed to and im sure they are doing tax evasion. ill sign it but will not pay the pet deposit but will pay the rent. I think i can get Juno to accept that because she is reasonable. Now if i am put in a situation where i cant do anything can i get any of them in trouble or threaten them with turning them in for illegal things? Does anyone have a clue as to what may be going on or is anything illegal going on. Any good lines I can say to any of these three about all of this? Thanks alot!!

Resolved Question: My disabled friend's hit hurdles for Medicare Part B and TANF, who do we sue to fix it?
(Thu, 12 Nov 2009 21:37:23 GMT)
I have a friend I've been helping for the past eight months or so. He's a single disabled father. He's declined for TANF because he lives with his uncle (even though he pays most of his social security disability money in rent) because he doesn't have a written proof of rent or something stupid like that. He's showing signs of diabetes and a severe depressive disorder on top of his disability. I've had him apply for Medicare. He got a note saying he could get part B for 100 dollars a month. He live off of 750 a month and most of it goes to rent and the remaining goes to his son. My research yielded that he could reapply and say he couldn't afford the 100 dollars a month and provided he didn't exceed a certain amount of income (which he doesn't) they can waive it. He's heard back from Medicare and they're giving him part A and are sending him the card... but there's no word on part B. Is no word a decline or are they reviewing it? If it gets declined should I have him pursue medicaid? How in the world can I get him the medical treatment he needs so he doesn't die? At this rate either the diabetes or a depressive episode ending in suicide are major threats to him. To make matters worse, all of his friends sit by helpless and watch him suffer. How can I get him TANF? How can I get him able to see a doctor? Who do I have to sue on his behalf to make this work? Appealing over and over again isn't working. Location: Austin Texas Medicaid: He applied for it and they sent him to Medicare because he's on social security disability. Mercy Clinics: I don't believe we have any here. Stamps: He already has them.

Resolved Question: Diabetes---I think I dodged the bullet but how do I keep it that way?
(Tue, 03 Nov 2009 18:58:21 GMT)
I was having odd diabetes-like symptoms (slow healing cuts, tingling, tired) so I went for a fasting blood test (I had been eating normally and not cutting portions or anything--in fact I think my last meal was a very hearty pasta dish). I don't remember for quite how long I fasted but it was at least 14 hours or more by the time it was my turn at the clinic. They also did a full blood serum chemistry panel with my cholesterol etc. levels. Thankfully everything came back 'normal'. My blood sugar was 5.1 (sorry don't know the measurement). As far as I know this still means I am niether pre-diabetic or diabetic yet--although it is on the higher end of normal. I think I may be beginning to have issues tolerating sugar though because I get very tired/woozy or something like that if I have a couple sips of pop (I RARELY do) or something although if I eat it again over a couple days the reaction stops. I want to get my blood sugar down much lower and keep it that way because doing research I know that people with high-normal blood sugar often get diagnosed with diabetes or pre-diabetes within the next decade or so. So I still have time and am ridiculously thankful. Now, WHAT DO I DO? What do I eat, how much do I eat, how much do I sleep, exercise, drink...I WANNA KNOW EVERYTHING SO I CAN SAVE MYSELF FROM THIS DISEASE. Here's the catch. I have a physical disability so it is VERY hard to get enough exercise to drop weight (I am very overweight), in that my joints and muscles are all out of whack so exercise puts alot of strain on them compared to someone who doesn't have these deformities. If anyone out there has a fitness/diet plan I will follow it to a T. PLEASE help. I'm in Canada and all the normal blood sugar levels are between 4-6.1 mmol/L so by my calculations I'm headed that way but am still ok. But thanks for all the info

Resolved Question: Question regarding depression?
(Tue, 03 Nov 2009 02:58:08 GMT)
I live in Australia and I have depression, type2 diabetes, high blood pressure, abscess on the breasts, ulcers on the legs, and no thyroid plus fluid problem, I am taking tablets for all the above mentioned I recently applied for the disability because of my problems and they knocked me back because of the depression, it seems I need to see a councilor, which I am, and get rid of the depression before they will accept my problems, my depression is very bad, not enough to think about killing myself, I have never thought of that, I have thought of cutting myself for attention , but I did not do it, how can they knock me back because of the depression, it is going to take a long time to fix? Because of all my medical problems I am too scared to leave the house because the abscess smells when it leaks and that adds to the depression

Resolved Question: Off work at 32 weeks?
(Mon, 02 Nov 2009 21:59:42 GMT)
I'm 32 weeks pregnant and live in ca. I'm curious if anyone thinks my md will take me off work under a disability, so that I'll be paid via state disability? I have gestational diabetes and I was started on insulin for it last week. I drive for a living and travel 200-300 miles a day. My job is unable to restrict how far I drive and there is no light duty. I have a disc bulge that causes me pain and sometimes tingling in my legs. All of this on top of the "normal" pregnancy discomforts of being tired, headaches, sleep issues, Braxton hicks, and peeing all the time. Can anyone help me out on this or give me some advise on how to be taken off work? Thank you in advance

Voting Question: I've been denied twice for social security benefits...what now?
(Mon, 02 Nov 2009 14:42:52 GMT)
In the past couple years, I have had a stroke, a major car accident that has ended up affecting my memory some. In february, I got to where I couldn't work at all. I have constant pain in my leg, that gives me fits whenever I stand or walk for more than about 10 mins. and the same when I am sitting. The pain is unbearable and I have to lie down in order for the pain to subside. My doctor has only given me naproxen which I take twice a day, but the pain is still there. I have uncontrolled high blood pressure and uncontrolled diabetes. It's becoming more manageable as the doctor has added more meds. I fall all the time. No reason for the falling, except that my leg just gives out on me. I am a wrecker driver by trade and at this point I am completely unable to drive. At this time, I am living with my sister in west Texas, but am planning on returning to South Texas after Thanksgiving. Should I get an attorney now, wait until I move back home, or file for the appeal myself again. Just so you know, I am not typing any of this, as I am completely computer illiterate. I have no experience doing anything else other than driving. My doctor isn't really doing anything to help me get the disability, either. I went through Texas Rehab Commision, and they sent me to a doctor who looked at all my meds, told me I was in good health and have a good day. Oh yea, he told me I had skin cancer on my ear, but not to worry about it. I was also sent to an ENT dr who told me I needed two heariing aids. My case worker at TRC called and told me that I needed to come back in because the jobs I chose that I would like to do I am unable to do because they involve driving. I jsut don't know if I should get attorney now or wait until I am denied once more. Any help is greatly appreciated. Meds I am taking: junuvia, metformin, bena/hctz, naproxen, gemfibrozil, metoprolol, clonodine, norvasc, Klor-Con,

Resolved Question: How do I enroll my mom in unemployment, food stamps, disability, etc, in the state of Texas?

My mom quit her nursing job in February 2008. They were about to fire her so she gave them her two weeks notice and resigned. She cashed out her 401K which was about $14,000 and lived off of that until August 2008. After that she was bouncing from one nursing job to the next. She is 60 years old and got fired from many of these jobs because she didn't move fast enough, couldn't keep up and do the job well enough, etc. I gave her around $3000 that fall of my student loan money just so she could make bills and have something to eat. She got really sick. She thinks she has diabetes. She has no job and no insurance so when she went to the doctor she just told him she has diabetes and he gave her some medicine for it. There were no tests run for anything. She is still not doing any better. The speaks and moves very slowly and she is just not herself. We have all been really worried about her but she insists nothing is wrong with her, and refused to go to the doctor to get further testing. Finally, four days before rent is due this month, she finally admits she is too sick to work. She is currently working for a nursing home. When they hired her they (verbally) told her she would get every other weekend and two evenings per week. They haven't put her on the schedule in over a month. She went in there practically begging them to fire her but they won't because they said they have nothing to fire her for. I am assuming they are afraid of having to pay unemployment benefits if they do fire her since they have no reason to. They keep telling her that she was hired on a on-call as-needed basis. My mom is requesting the employment paperwork from them but we are pretty sure that it won't have the schedule that they verbally agreed to on it, it will just say "as needed". It's really not fair for them to keep her hired there and never give her ANY hours. She has exhausted all of the nursing resources in our city and is really not well enough to be working anyway. I am out of money and I have no more money to give her. My question is, should we try to file unemployment? Should we take her down and get food stamps? welfare? I guess she needs to be on disability but she will have to visit a doctor to accomplish that. Is there a medical program for people in this situation so I won't have to pay for all these expensive medical tests she will need? How long does it take to get approved for any government funds like disability? What order should we do these things in? Please, serious answers only, any help appreciated!!

Resolved Question: Nothing against black people but I do have real questions.?
(Sat, 17 Oct 2009 19:49:57 GMT)
Why do black people send their children out for halloween without custumes on? Why do they try to get "extra" for their moms waiting in the car outside? And why would black parents come to the door and ask for candy for children who are sleeping in the car? Why don't they tip well if at all? Even my black friends when I have lunch with them "stiff" the waitress. I always palm the waitress a few bucks because I find it embarrassing (without letting my black friends know) And............ why do black people consider Diabetes a Disability? Millions for people have Diabetes work even though they have diabetes... why do black people try so hard to be considered Disabled and collect "disability" because they have Diabetes. Does Diabetes hurt or effect black people "more" than any other race? Real questions..............very interested. Not a racist!!! Why am I a racist if...........I just want to know an answer to a few questions about black people? I'm just curious why...........and the excuse that black people can't afford a costume for their kids is BS. they can afford the gas for their cars to drive them around to get the candy on halloween. And.......I love giving out candy to the kids - no matter what color. I just feel sorry for the children who don't have costumes............. why make your kids (different) than all the others. And........I'm not talking about teens... I'm talking about the little ones 5-10 years old. Where are the parent's priorities??????????? and to make the kids ask for some for the mom in the car?????? come on!!!! It's about the kids............not about you momma. People are sooo fast on here to call me a racist.............can't white people ask "real" questions about why black people do things different than white people.............. I have no dislike for black people.

Resolved Question: Low blood sugar---genetic?
(Tue, 06 Oct 2009 14:17:37 GMT)
I am at risk of being diabetic (and possibly am already--but am going for a blood test soon). They tested my blood sugar (but only with the meter--not actually making sure I had fasted and then giving me the sugar solution and waiting two hours which is what I'm going in for now) Anyway, at this clinic appointment when they tested it it came back at 3.9 (sorry don't know the apropriate measurement). I hadn't eaten in six hours (since eating a muffin at breakfast)--and was told this was bordering on low (but since the lower end of normal was 4 it wasn't major). The nurse who saw me told me that this can be a sign of pre-diabetes. My paternal grandfather has diabetes (type 2) as do a few of his siblings. I also have (on my mother's side) aborginal blood. I am very overweight and did not (have since started) exercise regularly (but I now do 1 hour of brisk walking every day---I should be doing more but have a physical disability so sports, running etc is difficult). As I tend to have major anxiety, obsessive etc. issues and am a total hypochondriac I do not want to say I am having symptoms because I am one of those people who can make themselves sick by believing I am. I spoke to my mother about my blood test results and she told me (first time I had heard it) that she and her father tend to have low blood sugar (like for her, anything below 3 is a bad reading whereas for other people the threshold would be much higher). Ergo, I am now starting to think the blood sugar reading I got (3.9) is genetic-based. So what does this mean for me? Less diabetes risk? More?

Resolved Question: Should I be on disability having Bipolar Disorder and Diabetes?
(Sun, 04 Oct 2009 20:53:12 GMT)
I am 30 years old and have suffered with bipolar disorder and anxiety for many years. I have been seeing psychiatrist all along, and some counseling. I also suffer from OCD. Recently I found out that I am a type 2 diabetic. My blood sugar is not controlled, but I am seeing an endocrinologist as well as a diabetic educator. I had to be taken off of my bipolar medication until my blood sugar is under control, so for now I am just depending on Klonopin to help with anxiety. I have filed for SSI, and am awaiting my hearing.. (i have an attorney as well). I keep hearing from my inlaws that I am just lazy. I wish they could understand my conditions, but I don't know how to explain to them. They keep trying to convince my wife to leave me because they think I am worthless. What should I do?

Resolved Question: how do you help someone who doesn't think they need help?
(Thu, 01 Oct 2009 08:12:34 GMT)
my sister is 30 years old. she is a diabetic. i can't spell all the things she has due to her diabetes.. but i can describe. she has no feeling in her feet. parts of her feet have been cut off, to avoid infection and the possibility of her losing the entire foot in most cases. she is on disability and cannot work. she does not monitor her diabetes, and lies to her doctors about it. she abuses the pain medication that is prescribed to her. she spends all of her money on eating out, alcohol at bars, and on things that she doesn't need , like trinkets. then she is asking to borrow money from out mom and grandmother. also. she has a 7 year old daughter who is obese. she is teaching her daughter very unhealthy living. she will probably die in the next 5 years, or less, if she continues to live this way. my mother has already said that she will not take on her granddaughter if that happens. and there is no one else who will. though i will try. how can i help her make better decisions? how can i make her take her diabetes seriously? how can i save her life? how can i save my niece? have you ever had to deal with a similar situation? how did you? what would you do if you were in my position? thanks. that's what my mom is saying. but she's family. at what point does a sibling become just a person, and not someone you need to fight for? but i do somewhat agree, and wish i could just let it go. but there's a child involved.

Resolved Question: Can you help me? I really need help.?
(Tue, 29 Sep 2009 00:32:31 GMT)
I'm really worry since they run some blood test (CBC an A1c) last week and today I was call from the doctor office that I need to go see him asap to discuss the test. I have so many health problems, very high cholesterol, diabetes and in many cases inflammation of the liver. I was in the hospital for 3 weeks when I was 18 because my liver was so swollen, beside that I have all the spinal damage with bulging disc and I'm on disability. What do you think could be wrong? I made an appointment the day after tomorrow and I'm pretty nerves, because the doctor never called me before to discuss the test. I appreciate your help very much. (I'm sorry if I put this in the wrong category.)

Resolved Question: disability and benefits?
(Sun, 27 Sep 2009 09:24:04 GMT)
I have Type 2 Diabetes, Asthma and sleep apnoea, the sleep apnoea is treated with a home ventilator as the CO2 levels in my lungs get quite high. I have great problems with my asthma 3 or 4 times a year, they treat me with steroids which then messes up my blood sugar control so I end up in a right mess. I got swine flu in mid july and have had bad asthma and chest infections since. I am looking to stop working and take early retirement on ill health. My concern is how the benefits sytem will treat me. do I have enough wrong with me to get ESA or IB as it used to be ?

Resolved Question: Is my wife cheating on me with a War Hero?
(Fri, 25 Sep 2009 18:26:21 GMT)
My wife finally wound up with the research grant that she'd been lobbying for. She's a Ph. D candidate at our local university, and primarily concentrates on European geology. Obviously, as an American, her only exposure to European rocks and so forth has been through literature. But now she is over in Europe. Malta, in particular. And accompanying her is a colleague who is driving me into questioning why she hasn't returned. The original research plans dictated that she study over in Malta for a month and then come back. She's been over there two months. And I haven't heard a peep out of her. But, honestly, our marriage is shaky right now, and has been for years, so I'm not shocked by her not phoning me. I still love her--don't misunderstand me--but the passion has waned. I'm in a wheel chair from alcoholism and obesity, yet she is youthful and healthy. I am on disability, whereas she's active in a professional, healthy environment on campus. I attend pro-communism rallies during the day, while she engages her undergraduate students and conducts research. So, there is a great disconnect in our relationship. Our marriage started dissolving back when the abuse started. I would come home from McDonald's, which is where I worked before my legs were amputated from diabetes complications, and just slap her around (usually more than she deserved), and she'd scream and fight back. It became perpetual while I was healthy, but I can't do it anymore now that I'm handicapped. So that's really where our marriage stands right now. But what makes me suspicious is that the colleague of hers who went with her is this 6' 4'' retired Navy SEAL. He served in the Iraqi War in 2003 and won a purple heart (flesh wound) and a Silver Star for battlefield bravery. This was all in the early stages of the war, and he was honorably discharged with all those medals after one tour (the sissy only served one tour). He enrolled in our local college and is now in the Ph. D. program with my wife. And what I read in the local newspaper a month is making me suspicious. This was the headline: LOCAL WAR HERO INHERITS FORTUNE FROM DECEASED UNCLE. He inherited fifteen million dollars from an uncle who wanted to express his gratitude for his nephew's battlefield heroics. My wife and I don't have any children. She has an inverted uterus. So it's not like she has anything beyond me to come home to. She's forty years old, and the SEAL (her colleague) is only twenty-eight. So I doubt there's any chance of them being romantically involved. I will admit that he looks like a Greek God (I rode the city bus to campus one day and met him one time), but he is just too young and immature to be with my wife. She belongs with a mature, productive man like myself, in my opinion. Not some silly, inexperienced kid. But the SEAL put his house up for sale the other day. No one in the community knows why; nor has anyone, including myself and the college, been able to contact my wife and her colleague. So where do you think my wife is? And how can I get her back ASAP? I love that woman with all my heart.

Voting Question: I can't loose weight?
(Wed, 23 Sep 2009 03:19:58 GMT)
Hi, I am a 16 year old male and have been trying to lose weight for a while now. I want to get skinny like most of the other guys at high school. I don't have any kind of gym membership and have a really hard time ever finding the opportunity to do so because I work at Kroger as a bagger. I get carts out of the lot for a couple hours a day and that is about all the exercise I get. I weigh about 140 - 150 pounds. This might sound like a good weight to be at but I have a flabby fat stomach. When I sit down, it hangs over my pants. My thighs are big too. It is hard to buy even Low Rise Boot Jeans because my thighs take up all the room in them. I wear a pants size of 30 - 32 and a shirt size Small or Medium. I can grab all of my stomach fat in my entire 2 hand and it grosses me out to look at. I know I can be slimmer than this. I want to have a 6 pack so bad, I just can't get slim enough. I know a lot of it has to do with my eating habits. I don't drink many soft drinks. I drink a lot of water and a glass of milk every day for my Dairy. I don't have a problem with eating vegetables and fruits. I eat wheat and not white bread. I try to stay low on carbs. I eat a good variety of meats too for the protein. I don't eat many fried foods anymore. My salt intake is also low so I know i am not retaining a lot of water fat. Please give me you help on what I should do to start seeing results. Please don't tell me that I should not be working about losing weight because I am too young or anything like this. Diabetes, Heart Disease and other disorders run in my family from excess fat and my Doctor has told me to be aware of that and I need to lose weight to avoid those medical disabilities. Please I need your help...Thanks.
