Open Question: Looking for others who are living with Lyme Disease - how did you get a diagnosis?
(Sat, 20 Mar 2010 01:13:57 GMT)
Been living with whatever this is for a few years, had every test run, the only abnormal test was 2 Lyme disease tests, showing that it was present, but they won't diagnose it now. Not looking for disability nor handouts, just intelligence and reasoning. I'm losing it on the chainsaw and can't keep up anymore with the kids. It is such a politically charged battle, going back and forth from those who insists it doesn't exist, to those who go too far with the conspiracy theories. At first, it was assumed I was a drug addict present or past - I was accused of cocaine use (not my cup of tea). Then it must be mental illness, depression or stress, no - got that checked out. Even one Doctor insisted I must have AIDS before it could possibly be Lyme Disease (not the case.) M.S. ruled out, stroke ruled out, spinal fluid negative, yet still positive for Lyme Disease - but they say I don't have it and don't follow the theory that it hides and can lay dormant. I was a competitive athlete since I was 4, and I know my body, I like to be strong, not weak - this isn't right. While Doctors fight over this, and deny any more help from insurance, I'm living with these symptoms debilitating my left side and causing Belle's Palsy. I know I'm not the only one out there. Been on internet blogs, CDC info is a joke, don't know where else to turn. CDC collects info on Lyme Disease, but won't GIVE info or help us. As a matter of fact, the Doctor who said I did not have Lyme Disease gave my info over to the CDC and they've called me looking to take a survey, which I refuse, since they insist I don't have it - sound fishy to anyone? You don't have this disease that doesn't exist, but we'd like to ask personal medical questions over the telephone about the symptoms of the disease you don't have! Done a lot of research, got the science & info, no compromises found between the two sides, yet I'm not a victim of my last speaker, so I'm still lost. My body is getting worse, while there is no explanation other than it doesn't exist. Anyone else out there? Or do you know anyone living with this? Suggestions? Added- Thanks for your answers. Ilads doctors are not covered by my insurance and don't seem to carry much weight in the medical field or with the CDC. I can't afford out of pocket right now. When I mentioned Ilads to infectious disease Dr & my first neurologist, they were angry. The first guy pounded his fist on the counter and turned scarlet red with an ugly vein bulging out of his head - scary. The first neurologist told me it was all in my head and to ignore the "misinformed Ilads crowd". He did not like it that I had done my own research. (It's MY body!) The last neuroligist took spinal fluid & ran more tests, but at least I could eliminate M.S. It boiled down to the fact that I was female, and because of that, it must be psychological or "hormonal". Do they throw this B.S. at men? I think they want to drive us into depression to give us that diagnosis, put us on a pill and get rid of us. Thanks for the websites, I've been on seven of them already By the way, I grew up and lived in Northeast - at ground zero for Lyme disease, but doctors up here still insist it doesn't exist.

(Thu, 18 Mar 2010 06:11:37 GMT)
hi, im in a bit of a pickle here, im having problems with my family doctor's office...i have been diagnosed with ADHD, Narcolepsy, Insomnia and Clinical Depression, and 5 years ago i've been prescribed some stimulants to treat my narcolepsy...been prescribed modafinil (VERY pricey and not covered on my Disability drug plan) i've tried it for a few months...worked great but the problem was i could not afford it anymore...so my specialist had switched me to Methyphenidate...up to 60 mg a day(also known as Ritalin...and is covered on my plan) so good a few little side effects i could handle for the first few months...then, i went to see my psychiatrist and recomended i get on some sleeping aid...been insomniac since i was a young child, my mind just doesnt rest...so....im going nuts lol ....so i sent my letter from my shrink to my family dr....i mentioned to my dr that i cant stand it i need help....what did i get for an answer you think?...."well...your on speed all day long, and now your asking me for sleepers to get down from your speed?!"....hmmmm....now.....for a few months i let it go....then...to my surprise i go to the dr's office with my daughter for HER....i get in secretary with a pee jar in hand and says "you got to take a drug test before you get ANY refills for your medication!!!"....wow...that was kind of rude i thought but i said ok...i know i need it...so ok...i get my script...ok...3 months thats alright....3 months later i get back in..."yea...here pee in this...got to drug test u again"....i bit my tongue...did it again...now...1 MONTH...omg im fed up with this crap....so far...i've done 4 drug test n still havent talked to the dr....what the heck do i do...so i call the dr to make an appointment "oh...you already have an appointment with the dr this month"...well that was news to me NO ONE called me to notify me of it lol its nuts....so...do i confront the dr? do i make a complaint...do i give this kook a try? all i do is cry and going manic and no one seems to be doing their job right...calling me a drug addict because of a corrupt system?! i've even filled out a form to try to get my modafinil covered like 6 times...but still havent gotten an answer....what should i do?....just plainly quit ALL this Narcolepsy treatment, pass out all over the house, risk getting hurt in the process or just keep playing their games and get labeled as a drug addict because of THEM?!...please i need some kind of guidance because im going completely mad :'( no, i've been tested in a sleep lab for sleep apnea, i go at least once a year to get updated, and been tested for daytime sleep disorder and have been diagnosed with narcolepsy Well getting manic from lack of sleep for months on end...when i was on modafinil everything was great...no manic depression, no crazy thought lol...im just very exhausted from it all... well, i live in a small town in ontario...we do not pay for doctors here and they are very limited in my town....would LOOOOOOOOOVE to switch dr's

Open Question: How to tell a slower person to politely leave?
(Thu, 18 Mar 2010 04:20:40 GMT)
So my boyfriend recently just opened up a new business...and he used to work with this slower man at his previous job. My boyfriend felt sorry for him and befriended him but now that he has his own business this man keeps stopping in wanting to talk on his breaks and after he gets off work. My boyfriend runs a auto detailing/mechanic/auto accessorie shop and really doesnt have time to sit and chat when we have a million things to do. we go to work at 9 and dont get home until 11 or later and we have a 3 year old and we hardly get to see her. If this man quit coming in im sure we would be home at a decent time. He is not extremely slow im not sure of his disability but he is 30 yrs old and acts like a 18 yr old. has a hearing aid and has a lisp. but i know hes not as quick as other people. Hes a good guy just dont need him hanging aroun the shop forever...... forgot to say.....we have told him numerous times that we are busy and he doesnt get the hint. He always wants to help....it gets super hard to concentrate when hes around because he is so needy. He stops by even if we dont answer his phone calls...or his texts. and if we answer his phone call he still stops by. so....... umm no my boyfriend has a problem with it. We both go to work at the same time. I dont need any rude comments we just want this kid to go away because my boyfriend is getting frustrated...hes not one to have very much patience...if you want you can have his phone number so you can call him and confirm for yourself if your going to be an ass about it. Oh and its just my boyfriend and I that own the shop. THere are no other employees right now. So when we paint full size pickups and people want it done right away yes we need to stay after and keep working. Haha no....im usually there when the slower pal is there. He usually stops by from 1-3 pm and after 6 pm when we are still at the shop. But most nights my bf still needs my help and i trust my bf. :)

Open Question: What are my rights as a father of a disabled child in Ontario Canada?
(Thu, 18 Mar 2010 03:02:23 GMT)
I am the father of a child with Disabilities. My son Sawyer was diagnosed with Di George syndrome when he was 5 days old. He had open heart surgery at 7 days old to repair a interrupted Aortic arch, and pda. He has a tracheotomy and a nearly non existent immune system. He is also hypocalcemic and has a seizure disorder. I have been through months of training so that I can care for him at home and my ex and I just separated in Dec of 2009. I have literally been with him every single day of his life up until February of 2010 when I was forced to server my ex with court paper so that we could have shared custody. I have not made any effort to be vindictive and I have only tried to be fair. After serving my ex with her court papers she has done nothing but try to cause me problems. She has completely limited my access to him to 11 hours per week. I know because there is no court order, theoretically I can have him half the time, however, my son comes with a lot of equipment and she will not send me with everything he needs just so I have no choice but to bring him home to her. She also pre-draws all his meds instead of sending me the meds in the bottles so that I cannot keep him any longer than what he has meds for. She is literally using my sons disabilities to keep him away from me and its taking its toll on me on many different levels. I really need to know what I can do right now to have more access to him. I am waiting for approval for a legal aid certificate after receiving a 2 hour certificate from legal aid. Just enough to explain to my candidate lawyer my situation. He is in the process of trying to communicate with legal aid that he thinks I have a valid case and he believes he should represent me. I am desperate to see my son more than 11 hours per week and I can't wait till the first preliminary court date. I need access to him asap as I have found out that she is not caring for him like she is supposed to. I am not going to get into the details of whats going on with her but its not good and his life is at risk. If anyone can help please... Please help me I need to see my son. My email address is employedbyme@gmail.com I could really use some advise. I have called child protective services and they said there is nothing they can do right now except do an investigation. I even have proof that I told the worker that I would send and they said that they don't want it. I found out that she was sleeping in her bed while he slept in his own crib in his room. The problem with this is that because he has a trach he need 24 hour care and supervision otherwise his trach could get plugged with secretions and he could die. She has it posted all over her facebook account about how often she sleeps with him with nobody else to monitor him. It seems shes getting away with everything and all it looks like to child protective services is that I am trying to be spiteful which is certainly not the case.

Open Question: Learning disability, college student?
(Wed, 17 Mar 2010 16:43:04 GMT)
I think that I may potentially have a learning disability. I am current in college, and have taken 5 Pre-Algebra courses in my lifetime. Each of these courses, I have failed to comprehend and understand the learning material. I've managed to pass my way through high school, and that is how I am in college at the moment. There are few things I can understand mathematically. I can do basic math, but not with much ease. I cannot remember my multiplication tables, I can barely do long-division, etc. I did not learn to read a wall-clock until I was basically in 5th grade (mind you, this was taught when I was in 1st grade) because I simply could not comprehend the face that when you see a 1 on a clock, that was really a five, meaning the time would be 12:05. I would look at a block and see 12:01. I am facing serious consequences with my struggles with math. My financial aid is going to be dropped. I have taken this course twice in college now, determined to take a third and final time as regulated by the school only to find out my financial aid will not cover it and in addition I will have to pay out-of-state tuition for this course and in the event I do not pass it this time around, I will no longer be able to attend that course at my school. How do I get diagnosed for this? What difference would this make if I had a diagnosis?

Resolved Question: Service dog question...?
(Sun, 14 Mar 2010 21:21:25 GMT)
I've looked through a lot of old questions pertaining to service dogs and mental health disorders. From what I've been able to gather, someone with a mental health problem (anxiety for example) cannot get a service dog (one that can go to public places) unless they meet the criteria for having a disability. My question is, What options are there for a person suffering from anixiety who would be aided by a dog in distressing situations? I can't remember what they're called, but it's like a service dog but not quite. Some thing about emotion. What are they called and what are they trained to do? Are businesses sometimes flexible regarding service dog regulations? This will also be posted in Dogs.

Resolved Question: Is this lady genuine or its a scam?
(Tue, 09 Mar 2010 11:25:33 GMT)
Dearest in Christ From: Sister Rosemary (sister.roesmary@btinternet.com) Sent: Sat 3/06/10 6:47 PM To: Dearest in Christ: A very nice day to you, I am Mrs Aisha al-Rasheed by Islamic name before I repented and named (Sister Rosemary) in Christianity name. I am from Saudi Arabia and married to late Mr Mohammed Ahmad al-Rasheed who was the Saudi Arabian ambassador to Ivory Coast before he was murdered. We married each other for good eleven years without having a child. You can click on the below website to read the news about my late husband. http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2003/03/28/819242.htm After his burial ceremonies was conducted by his Muslim brothers, I repented and became a fully born again Christian through the preaching of late Rev Father Joseph Bill during his condolence visit to me when he visited IVORY COAST. I was touched by the spirit of GOD through his preaching and became repented as a Christian and I was given Sister Rosemary as baptized name. So I decided not to remarry again or get a child outside my matrimonial home which the Bible is against according to Christianity doctrines because I fully believed, if my late husband was alive, he would have also repented and get baptize too. When my late husband was alive he intend to establish a foundation to help disabilities & orphanage and deposited $4,950,000.00 Dollars here in Abidjan Cote d'Ivoire and up till date the money still remained untouchable though I would have donate the funds here in Ivory Coast but due to the amount of corruptions were the Ivory Coast Government embezzled some European Union aid to the charities, I became afraid of them to donate the funds over here. For more information, you can click the below website to read the news of Ivory Coast Government embezzlement by yourself. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/443903.stm Recently, my doctor revelled to me that I will be having some few period to live due to my cancer decease and having known my present condition of health will result. I decided to donate the money out as my spirit directed me. I want you that will use the money to help widows, disabilities, orphanage & churches to see that the house of GOD is well maintained. The Holy Bible made us to understand that blessed is the hand that giveth that is why I took this decision to complete my late husband "WILL" before he died because we don't have any child that will inherit the wealth and our relatives are not Christians and I don't want my late husband's efforts to be use by unbelievers. I don't want a situation whereby the money will be use ungodly. That is why I am taking this decision. Not that I am afraid of death hence I know where I am going. I know that I am going to be in the bosom of the LORD. Exodus 14 VS 14 says that the Lord will fight my case and I shall hold my peace. As Muslim tradition describe, if I mistakenly go back to Saudi Arabia, believed me, I will be stolen overnight by my late husband's relatives and even my own parent will support them in any action they decided to take against me as they are the same Muslim. So that is why I don't want them to know about this project. As soon as I receive your response I shall give you further information’s about the money because I can't figure out what may happen next to me as the medical experts observed in me. But please you should always pray for my survival though my greatest happiness today is that I live a life of a worthy Christian since I became a born again Christian and whosoever wants to serve GOD should serve him in truth and spirit as the HOLY BIBLE said. I look forward to hearing from Thanks and remain bless in the Lord Yours in Christ Sister Rosemary

Resolved Question: **BREAKING NEWS** Local Man On Bus In Baldness Shock?
(Sun, 07 Mar 2010 13:21:19 GMT)
There was drama in a West Midlands town this morning, when a passenger travelling on a bus realised, to his horror, that he was in an advanced state of baldness. The man, who cannot be named due to embarrassment reasons, was sitting on the 126 service from Birmingham to Wolverhampton. The vehicle had just passed the King Arthur public house in Dudley, when a glance at the on-board CCTV monitor revealed a saucer-sized area on his crown, devoid of follicular activity - the tell-tale sign of impending slapheadedness. Other passengers rushed to the man's aid, as he choked on his ticket, and the driver stopped the bus to check on the patient's condition. After a brief interlude during which the man claimed he was "OK", the vehicle continued its journey towards Wolverhampton, with the balding passenger alighting from the service a couple of stops further on. Driver, Albert Cobble, said later "We get a lot of bald guys on here. Many wear caps to cover up their disability". How much more tragedy can a town take?

Voting Question: Withdrawing from College because of medical reasons?
(Sun, 07 Mar 2010 07:38:47 GMT)
The situations starts with a student who is experiencing back pain due to a strain and is exhibiting signs of depression. Under advice from a doctor he was told that returning to college would be fine when he asked months ahead of making this decision. There is documentation of the treatment start and that he is being treated for the same reasons. Under these pretenses I would like answers to these questions. If the student withdraws will he receive a penalty for financial aid for withdrawing because of a medical condition? If the student withdraws will he be able to use financial aid in future higher education endeavors if he overcomes these health issues? Is there anything that person can do in pursuing the doctor because their recommendations failed to help and/or made things worse? Is there any good way to measure how depressed someone is? If a person finds it hard to pursue normal day endeavors because of the mental condition, should they try medicine? If a person finds it hard to pursue normal day endeavors because of the mental condition, should they try applying for disability? A lot of questions I know and thus a person doesn't have to answer all of these I appreciate what assistance I am given.

Resolved Question: What major would be good for me with my interests?
(Sat, 06 Mar 2010 01:49:43 GMT)
Well, I got accepted into 5 out of 6 schools (Washington college in Chestertown, University of Baltimore, Towson, Stevenson, and McDaniel) and I’ve been deciding between a few majors and I don’t know which I’ll like. I love: Reading (I read really fast when I’m interested in it) – I like most fiction and some like real life stuff… Writing (I’m writing 2 books now actually) Being with kids (I was thinking of being a teacher but it’s not a high paying job) Being with old people (I have a great grandma and I love going to her nursing home and being with those people) Animals (ANY animal). I’m a total animal lover. I love all animals from dogs to cats to horses to cows to birds :D and they are basically my life. I also own two dogs and a horse in which I love dearly. Photography (I’m a pretty good photographer), and I also love like the graphic design stuff. I’m pretty creative. I can come up with ideas very easily :D I’m good with people with disabilities. I have learning disabilities and I have a 50 some % hearing loss and wear a hearing aid. I’ve also been to physical therapy and stuff so I understand all that. I think that’s about it. There’s more I just can’t think of anything more. So what would be a good major for me at those I got into schools? Oh and the subjects I love are: Math, English, and Science (although I hate biology) I love learning about space and stuff

Resolved Question: Veteran's benefits-wondering if I'll be dropped?
(Fri, 05 Mar 2010 21:30:38 GMT)
I tried to ask this question in education>financial aid but no one knew the answer I guess. My step-dad is a vietnam veteran, former marine and disabled. He has 100% disability and that makes me able to go to college, I guess. I have $40,000 in college tuition that I can use, beginning this spring. I've just now reached the age where I can use it. My mom and step-dad have been together for like a decade now, but since I'm out of the house she wants to leave him. She says she "put up with him" for me, so I had a "stable" home. He does crack all the time and drinks about 3 12-packs a day (no joke). She's sick of it. She isn't divorcing him, and she thinks he won't bother with divorce papers because he's too consumed with putting money back for crack. Question is: If he DOES begin the divorce papers, I lose the college benefits, don't I? I'd just rather know now than get halfway thru the semester and get cut off. Anyone know how this works? by veteran's benefits I mean Educational Assistance Chapter 35

Resolved Question: I have a job interview as a Nanny. How much should I ask for compensation for my Duties, and light housework?
(Fri, 05 Mar 2010 19:30:48 GMT)
PLEASE ONLY ANSWER IF YOU ARE A NANNY OR UTILIZE ONE I have an interview for my first Nanny position on Monday. I have no experience with the job title, but I was the oldest in my family- and practically raised the others. I was a Flight Attendant for the past 5 years, and I am certified in First Aid and CPR. Also in my spare time I worked in a developmental disabilities program with children, so I figured that would be some good experience, as one child has ADHD. So basically, 2 children 35 hours a week in the State of Maine. How much should I ask for per hour? This position would not be live in, and I will not be asking for benefits. I'm not talking about babysitting either. I

Resolved Question: The Benefits Of Animal Testing?
(Tue, 02 Mar 2010 02:00:26 GMT)
Any comments/Suggestions would be greatly appreciated In 1990 the founder of PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, Ingrid Newkirk told a reporter that if an AIDS cure resulted from animal research, “we’d still be against it.” I appreciate the efforts that animal activists put forth on securing animal rights, emphasizing that animals are not ours to be tested on. However, when it comes to ensuring human life, I disagree. Should we not take the best lead we have to cure a disease like AIDS, which has already killed 28million people? Should we take thousands of animals and place their lives above millions of people, which they have saved and will save? Scientific effort based on animal testing is a sacrifice that must be made to pledge the safety of human health. Without these mammals for testing, medical progress crucial to the safety and development of medicine and food will drop severely. One of the advantages of animal testing is the ability for medical procedures to be run safely and efficiently on humans after testing it on animals. Open-heart surgery, which is now the most common form of cardiac surgery in the U.S according to the US Department of Health, required about 20 years of animal testing on cats by Doctor John Gibbon of Jefferson Medical College to assure safety and efficiency. Unfortunately, not all medical procedures pass through sufficient testing before entering the market. The Food and Drug Administration distributed a jaw implant called Vitek in 1983, without sufficient testing. This malfunctioned jaw implant resulted in thousands of people suffering from severe pain when their jaws were literally torn apart, which ultimately leads to eating disabilities. One year later, the Vitek Incorporation tested the Vitek jaw on canine dogs, which resulted in immediate jaw damage and erosion. Had the FDA required such testing, many painful and permanent injuries would have been prevented. In the past, many diseases like Polio and Diabetes, which killed hundreds of thousands of humans, seemed unstoppable. The only way scientists were able to combat these diseases successfully was through animal testing. One of the best accomplishments made with animal experimentation was the vaccine for polio developed in1955, an epidemic that killed about 60,000 people a year, targeting primarily children. A doctor named Jonas Stalk was determined to find prevention not with his patients, which several scientists tried and failed, but within his lab. Injecting approximately 17,500 monkeys with the disease, he was finally able isolate the three viruses that caused polio and developed a vaccine for each that was able to prevent humans from being infected with Polio. Today, people take the wellness and life span of diabetes patients for granted. Before 1969, the fear of severe Diabetes was much, much greater. According to the Nobel Prize Committee and Medical Doctor Andrew Dexter from UCLA, patients back then with sever diabetes were only spared a few more years by following extreme diets and undergoing constant pain. Luckily, two Nobel Prize winning scientist, Frederick G. Banting and John Macleod, discovered Insulin from experimenting on a dog with Diabetes and another dog without. By removing the pancreas, an organ that regulates sugar, of a dog, diabetes developed in the dog a week. However, when injecting the diabetic dog with a pancreatic formula, called insulin, extracted from the healthy dog, the diabetic dog lived a healthy life as long as it kept receiving the injection. This proved to be true in humans as well because patients who died from diabetes had a damaged pancreas. When Insulin was distributed throughout America to humans, patients with severe diabetes with only days to live recovered as long as they kept receiving their injections. Unfortunately, scientists are unable to find a cure or treatment for every disease. Animal testing alone provides a huge potential for scientists to find a cure for today’s toughest diseases like AIDS. First off, scientists require thorough information on the virus before looking for a cure. Fortunately, this was made possible by examining similar immune deficiencies syndromes in mice, cats, and monkeys. One major understanding the AIDS Foundation discovered through animal models was that the AIDS virus is a retrovirus, meaning that it can only duplicate with a special enzyme, or “helper” chemical. The majority of mammals possess these similar enzymes, each producing a different disease similar to AIDS. By understanding how AIDS works from animal models, scientists have better chance to stop the AIDS virus from duplicating. Even though a vaccine is currently eluding us, animal testing still has provided temporary treatments. The Foundation of Biomedical Research discovered blood tests that are run on humans to detect AIDS, through animal testing. Multiple drug treatments that allowed patients to live longer were also tested on animal models to secure

Resolved Question: financial aid for disabled children?
(Mon, 01 Mar 2010 03:58:20 GMT)
A married couple, both working full time, have a child who is born with a disability. Since the child needs more than standard care the mother really would rather not return to work but the couple can't get by on one income. Are there any gov't programs that would essentially pay for the mom to be able to stay home to care for the disabled child? Dave, is there anything, at all, in my question the would lead the average person to believe that the people I described live in a plush house, drive fancy cars, and indulge in anything? These are people who "get by" and they will continue to, I was simply asking if there were programs to help them since their life is now so radically changed. What an arrogant, pompous, presumptuous jerk you are.

Resolved Question: I live in Florida. I need college money. Any ideas for scholarships or grants?
(Sat, 27 Feb 2010 16:39:44 GMT)
I live in Highlands County Florida. FASFA threw me out in the rain, and our guidance office isn't really supplying too many options. I can't apply for the Florida Resident Aid Grant, because University of Florida isn't on their list of accepted schools. I don't have any disabilities. I'm male, white. Not of any kind of descent. No veterans in the family. No one's on disability. My parents are married. And my sister is attending University of Florida as well. I'm starting this Summer/Fall. So with two of us in college, it's gonna be really tight. And my little sister is just 2 years behind me. I'm going to be a Biology Major, and hopefully be a doctor. I have a 4.7 GPA, a 1280 SAT. I have 69 of the 75 community service hours for Bright Futures. I'm going for 100% one.

Resolved Question: How can I get my son diagnosed without health insurance?
(Fri, 26 Feb 2010 20:45:11 GMT)
My son is 20. When he was attending public school, he was labeled as speech impaired in preschool because he was receiving speech, occupational and physical therapy. When he was a little older, they thought he had ADD, no hyperactivity. We took him for testing, but he didn't have it. After doing some research on my own, I found a website talking about CAPD (Central Auditory Processing Disorder) so we got a referral from our primary Dr. and took him for testing. The therapist there said he did have it and gave us some suggestions on how to deal with it at school. We informed the school and they did try to accommodate the IEP. As time went on, the school felt that he would benefit from an aide, so he was given a part-time aid. Then he went to high school where they changed his IEP to Learning Disabled and gave him a full time aide. He attended four years of high school, which included two years of vocational school in his Jr. and Sr. year. He graduated from there and attended a technical school for culinary arts and graduated from there. He went on to do an internship at a local restaurant, but at the end of the internship, they did not have a position for him. Since then, he has been home not going to school, not getting trained and not getting a job. He has a counselor that he works with that is supposed to help him find a job, but all they really do is make suggestions on places to look - not really coming up with any leads. The technical school he went to was supposed to guarantee job placement, that is why we went with them. They have done little to nothing in helping him find a job. He has been on some job interviews on his own, but I believe because he is so quiet that they can tell there is something amiss and they don't hire him. I was thinking that maybe if he had a definite diagnosis of what kind of learning disability he has, maybe he could get more assistance or perhaps qualify for SS. He lives at home, but I am thinking down the road - will he be living with us forever and he will need to support himself some day. He does not have health insurance since he came off of ours when he stopped going to school. How can he go talk to a doctor about getting a definite diagnosis? When he was going to school, out of all the wild labels they tried to put on him, they never suggested autism of any kind, but my sister seems to think he may have Aspergers.

Resolved Question: Should I include hearing loss on acting resume?
(Fri, 26 Feb 2010 10:55:41 GMT)
I have a severe hearing loss, and wear hearing aids. (In the ear and tiny, you really cant notice them.) Should I declare this in 'disabilities?' (Its complicated, but I have to fill this out.) Im not ashamed of it at all, but I just don't want to be turned away before I've even started. Thankfully, my speech/ect is fine, and you wouldn't know Im deaf unless I told you. Of course it would only be a problem if I had to take them out for whatever reason, as I wouldn't hear. Any advice? Thankyou! (:

Resolved Question: How much did Jenny treat Forrest like crap in Forrest Gump?
(Wed, 24 Feb 2010 05:18:49 GMT)
I'm watching Forrest Gump and me and my friends were discussing through facebook how accurate the movie is. He was always there for Jenny when she needed him but because he wasn't smart enough/good looking enough she went for all the other guys that treated her like crap, until she got AIDS and realized she was dying so she married him. Honestly, until now I didn't realize how much of a piece of crap Jenny really was. It's pretty much the story of my life, only without the disability. Moral of the story, if you like someone as more than a friend, don't be there to hear their problems because it won't get you anywhere with her.

Resolved Question: How can I find financial aid for persons with Pervasive Developmental Disorder?
(Sat, 20 Feb 2010 20:01:36 GMT)
Alright, I have P.D.D. and may have Asperger's. I want to finish college but unfortunately after losing my retail job of 3 years I have zero income and my savings is running out. I wanted to join the U.S. Military but they do not accept people with P.D.D. My parents gave up on helping me because they do not know what to do. I tried to explain to them; however, that just frustrated them even more. Now, I sit here worried about income and starting Fall 2010. Is there any assistance program for someone with my disability? Does anyone know?

Resolved Question: Dependancy on the FAFSA...?
(Fri, 19 Feb 2010 17:32:29 GMT)
I am 24 years old so I know that I am not able to put my parents information on my FAFSA anymore. I was just curious, however, to know if I'll get more aid now that I am on my own or if I would have gotten more aid if I still could put my parents info on it. Here is my situation: -I took home $35,000 in 2009. -I live on my own and pay rent. -My father is deceased and my mother has no income (she is on disability and collecting railroad retirement). -I have another sister also enrolled in college So, as you can see, I have been living on my own and paying my own bills for quite a while with no help from my mother. In past years, I received the full pell grant. So now that I am considered an independant because I am 24, is this going to give me less financial aid than the years before? Will I even be eligible for the pell grant anymore?

Resolved Question: Teens: I want your opinions, would you count this as a disability?
(Wed, 17 Feb 2010 22:37:25 GMT)
I am deaf, and for a while now, have worn cochlear implants http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.isvr.soton.ac.uk/soecic/processor%2520on%2520ear.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.isvr.soton.ac.uk/soecic/CI_des.html&usg=__g6hkeQXEEYqG97JMU25LnrhR_Z0=&h=337&w=392&sz=12&hl=en&start=18&itbs=1&tbnid=Vd0TQb695Q8cLM:&tbnh=106&tbnw=123&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcochlear%2Bimplant%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den They make me hear pretty well, by no means perfect, but I'm not held back by it. Everytime we go on a school trip, or I fill out an application form when it asks about disabilities, I have to put that in. I'm always disbelieving writing it in because I don't think of myself as disabled, and it kinda got me thinking what other people think. If you see someone wearing hearing aids or cochlear implants, (meaning they're not completely deaf they have help to hear) would you say they're disabled? I don't see it as much different from needing to wear glasses for bad eyesight, but what d'you think? Thanks for any input =)

Resolved Question: Would you fill out a survey for a free ipod?
(Thu, 11 Feb 2010 19:40:38 GMT)
Nope, I'm not giving them away, but the Polk County schools are. $350,000 of federal funds intended to go towards programs for developmentally disabled students are being used to give away ipods if you fill out a 10 minute survey. "District officials announced Tuesday that they will give silver iPods Nanos worth $150 to parents of children with disabilities who complete a 10-minute online survey. The state survey asks 26 questions about how well the child's school partners with parents of students with disabilities. The survey can be found at www.esesurvey.com. "The purpose behind the initiative has been to get the parents involved," said Nancy Woolcock, assistant superintendent of learning support. The district has set aside up to $350,000 of federal money, to be used specifically for programs for developmentally disabled students, for the iPods and Woolcock said she received a discount on the price. There are about 10,500 students with disabilities who attend schools in the district." http://www.theledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100210/NEWS/2105005/1338/NEWS00 Is this a good way to spend $350,000 of your tax dollars? Remember, these are FEDERAL funds set aside to help developmentally disabled children. There's a link to the actual 26 question survey in the article.

Resolved Question: Is the Tea Party Truly the Tea Party?
(Sun, 07 Feb 2010 04:20:11 GMT)
It they really want to return American to 1781, shouldn't they also advocate abolishing all government departments (including all agencies/programs like the FBI, CIA, NSA, Social Security Administration, public education, medicare, medicaid, food stamps, welfare payments, disability/unemployment benefits etc.) and only keep the State Department, Defense Department, and Treasury Department? Should they also advocate withdrawing funding and troops from all foreign countries and shut down all foreign military outposts - including spending billions of tax dollars on foreign aid to countries like Israel?

Resolved Question: Will I be able to receive a substantial amount of financial aid?
(Sat, 06 Feb 2010 18:52:01 GMT)
Here's the deal - my family makes 30900 a year but we have 36000 in savings (my mom got disability this year which is why the income is so low and savings are so high...the savings are mostly her lump sum disability check) We also have a house that is currently valued at 150,000. I will be needing a car this year, and for that we will take money out of the savings. We will also be needing to pay off a small loan. I am an only child. Basically, my question is if my family's income is so low but savings are so high, can I still get enough financial aid? My tuition costs will be approximately 11000.

Resolved Question: Going to college in New York City - At 35 years old - financial aid?
(Fri, 05 Feb 2010 15:08:45 GMT)
Hello I am just curious if anyone knows if there is a University or community college in New York City that has any of the the following. 1) no instate tuition (if not then its ok) 2) Non Traditional student services (34 years old, and I want to live on campus, or housing assistance) 3) Financial Aid. ( I qualify for the max for student grants and loans) What I am asking: I want to live in New York City close to my daughter and I want to go to school. It does not matter the area, although my daughter lives in Manhattan. I can't afford to live in a apartment by myself, so I am curious if there are any housing programs for students over 30. Also I will be going to school for History. Do you think financial aid will pay for college cost and housing in new york city? I do not think I will be able to get private loans due to my low income. I work for a non profit Company helping children with disabilities so its more experience than pay. So that's why my income is so low. But I will work in New York so that may help with some of the cost. If anyone knows anything please let me know. Thank you.

Resolved Question: Do blind computer users have monitors?
(Thu, 04 Feb 2010 20:45:45 GMT)
I understand that visually they have no need for them, but I was contemplating HCI and disabilities and wondered whether or not the programs which read the text aloud require a monitor to be in place. And, truth be told, I had a sudden flash of how odd it would be to walk through an office type situation to find one worker typing and clicking away without the aid of a screen. Good morrow my merry milk maids!

Resolved Question: How do I deal with my mom who acts disabled and yells at me to do house work and tells me I'm worthless?
(Mon, 01 Feb 2010 04:01:53 GMT)
My mom has been using this "disabled" thing since before I was born, she is not actually disable and does not collect disability. She lays in bed all day and will had clients occasionally(she is a massage therapist). She complains that her pain won't let her do anything, I've had to do everything for myself since I was little. Constantly she will yell at me for not doing something she tells me to do within a 5 minute period, she over exaggerates all the time, and even when she's wrong she will yell till I give up because it's easier to deal with if I just don't argue. I've been laid off from work and have been putting out applications to other businesses close by, but no one is really hiring and the places that are I can't work there. She has been yelling at me to get a job and I've told her I've been trying but it's like she doesn't care. And instead says how when she was my age she was looking for a job 24/7. I'm a senior in high school and am taking 5 classes which means I stay after lunch and also have a zero hour so I go to school earlier. When I get home it seems like all she does is yell at me to do things. things I know she is capable of doing and when I point this out she gets mad and tells me to do it. She even yells at me infront of my girlfriend and sister who have tried to stand up for me by pointing out where she's wrong but all they do is aggrivate her even more. I'm applying to NAU a college about 3 hours away from my home. My mom wants me to apply to ASU which is about 40 mins away from our home so I can live here with her and take the bus to school (I can't drive because she wont let me practice with her car, the only car we have, because she thinks I'll wreck it). She wants this so I can take care of her and the house and our two dogs. So she refuses to help me even a little with my college. She even goes far enough now to tell me I wont make it into college because I haven't dont the things she's told me to do. I've applied for fincanical aid and grants and scholorships. NAU sent me an acceptance letter. It seems like all I can do to keep sane is stay out of the house because whenever I'm home ith her she just abuses me emotionally and I've thought about killing myself on lots of occasions because of what she says. Tonight she's even gone as far as to yell at me and say all I ever do is come here and ask her for money (which I never do because I know we don't have a lot right now. I've had to pass up on a lot of hanging out with my friends because they've wanted to do things that cost at least 10 dollars which I don't have). My mom has called me a jackass on numerous occasions infront of guests because I don't do something for her right away and when I try to defend myself she just yells louder. Its easier for me to just stay quiet and not say anything back. She never says she loves me anymore and she wonders why I never want to stay at the house or have friends over for dinner or to hang out. She never even appologises after she yells at me or my girlfriend. I just really dont know what to do because I still have to wait till the fall till I can move out. But what about my sister? I'm worried about her too. I don't even know if I'll make it that long.

Resolved Question: What is the difference betwee an LCD and LED TV?
(Fri, 29 Jan 2010 20:15:12 GMT)
I wear hearing aids because I have a hearing disability, I don't know if one of them affects the ability to slow down closed captioning, but non-delayed closed captioning is very important to me as well as the quality of the TV itself, so basically I have a few questions; what the difference between them is, What brand of TV is recommended? and Should I get a surround system with it? If so, what do you suggest? Thanks in advance! I mean between, sorry for the misspelling guys

I am drawing disability but the social security office told me not to deposit any money into my bank account. How do I go about filing for finical aid and putting the money in my bank account? Will the social security office make exceptions? I am going through the colleges disability program. I also don't wanna stop receiving my disability checks. In the end can I receive my disability checks and financial aid?
