will a special education teacher answer my ?
The school district is telling me that my child has to go to special day kindergarten next fall (she will be five in November) or she loses her speech services. Her current speech teachers feel she's not ready socially or emotionally for K and neither do I. I'm trying to keep her in preschool. I'm supposed to visit the special day kindergarten class to see if I like it or not. What kinds of questions should I ask the teacher so I can make a case of why my child is not ready.

Best answer:
If your child has an IEP for speech services and is identified as a child with a speech and language disability, then her speech services should continue in the kindergarten program.

Just a note of caution when observing the kindergarten now - these are children who are a full year older than your daughter; they have been in K since the beginning of the school year and have a full year of maturity under their belts. They were not at this level when they started in the Fall, so don't think your daughter will not make it in the class.

On the other hand, if her current teachers see some factors in her maturity that concerns them about her success and you also strongly agree, then push to keep your daughter another year in preschool as an exception. Turning 5 in November is a bit young for kindergarten these days.

In short - you know your daughter best - go with your gut feelings!
