Resolved Question: financial assistance programs for parents of handicapped children in Ca?
(Tue, 09 Mar 2010 18:37:44 GMT)
I know that a handicapped adult can receive disability insurance, but what about parents who are prevented from working due to caring for a special needs child?? I am trying to get him enrolled in the county special education program, but as anyone who has dealt with the districts knows that it is a nightmare, especially in this economy. Every time I have tried to work, even part time, I have had to quit immediately because I cannot get care for my child, he has been kicked out of every single day care program in the area except for the private special education school, but I can't send him there anymore, it is very very expensive. He is supposed to have his IEP completed as soon as he gets an official "diagnosis" but unfortunately every time I take him for his psych exams/evaluations, I have to pay them a $70 copay and I cannot do it every week, and psych exams take a very long time even if you do go every week. The only place nearby that will do it at no cost has a 6 month waiting list and I do not know what to do for income in the meantime. Are there any financial assistance programs specifically designed to assist parents who are full time caregivers for handicapped children?

Voting Question: Can someone explain the difference between CA SDI and Paid Family Leave Insurance?
(Tue, 26 Jan 2010 20:37:33 GMT)
I know I am not eligible for FMLA due to the small # of employees at my work, but a letter from HR states that I am eligible for Pregnancy Disability Leave (PDL) of up to 4 months, which I can take one I become "disabled" to work. Does this mean that I can file for State Disability Insurance (SDI) and get paid through EDD for up to 6-weeks during my PDL? And after SDI, am I still able to file a claim and apply for Paid Family Leave Insurance? I have gone through the EDD website, but am even more confused than ever. Any help or information would be appreciated. Thanks so much!!

Resolved Question: Pregnant business owner in CA - Am I eligible for EDD Disability Benefits?
(Wed, 13 Jan 2010 01:10:21 GMT)
I was told that I should have applied for Elective Coverage two years ago. Well, this is news to me until last Monday. Is it true that I cannot get claim for Disability Insurance Benefits from EDD, that it's not covered for business owners?

Resolved Question: Self Employed disability coverage in CA?
(Mon, 11 Jan 2010 02:05:45 GMT)
My doctor sent in my claim stuff around Dec 18. I filled in the forms for elective coverage as I am self employed. Yesterday I just my "notice of computation" in the mail which shows my maximum benefit is $0. "You have insufficient earnings in the disability/paid family leave based period to establish your State Disability Insurance" - Well obviously this is because I'm self employed and I just moved in CA in March. I worked last year in WI. So what am I supposed to do now? I thought I'm eligible for some kind of benefit through elective coverage?

Resolved Question: Pregnant in California, currently on unemployment, can I still get benefits?
(Fri, 18 Dec 2009 16:35:00 GMT)
I was laid-off in June from my job (in CA), started collecting unemployment, am now pregnant and due in April. While I have been laid off I have worked as an independent contractor part time so I receive my own income from that and smaller checks from my unemployment benefits to "fill the gaps" in my income. When I am no longer able to work as an independent contractor in April, can I collect disability insurance or unemployment insurance benefits? I have been trying to research this but since my situation is a bit complicated I haven't found any solid answers, any input whatsoever would be very much appreciated!

Resolved Question: Pregnancy is now considered a disability apparently. Do I qualify for unemployment or disability?
(Wed, 16 Dec 2009 20:25:16 GMT)
I recently resigned from a position in California to take a position in Seattle, WA. The position at the new company ended up falling through. This was after I had relocated to the area and moved into our new house. I am 4 months pregnant and have insurance coverage for the remainder of my pregnancy and for a year after the baby is born. However, I am now showing and having A LOT of trouble getting a job. I am more than qualified for the positions I'm applying - I know no one wants to hire a pregnant woman knowing she'll be on maternity leave in a few months. Since I resigned from my position in CA, I don't believe I'm eligible for unemployment. I have 2.5 years of taxed income in CA. Since I never held a position in WA, I'm not eligible here for sure. I thought maybe I would be eligible for disability for some of the pregnancy related issues I've had: debilitating headaches, memory loss (if you think pregnancy doesn't cause those things in the second trimester, look it up, it does!) plus the fact no one wants to hire a pregnant woman. I have been paying SSI for 16 years through my paycheck and I do have a monthly disability amount I am entitled to if I am in fact disabled. My brother in law works for the company I was going to be working for, so I thought there would be no problem at all. I got royally screwed. I know that. Please do not respond if you're looking to boost your ego and lecture me on the choices I should have made. I have learned a lesson from this and it sucks! I just need some advice on where to go from here. Thanks! Also, I attached a link that discusses the pregnancy discrimination laws a little. http://www.eeoc.gov/facts/fs-preg.html

Resolved Question: CA SDI necessary for non-CA residents?
(Sat, 31 Oct 2009 15:20:21 GMT)
CA SDI is California's state disability insurance program. My wife and I live in Florida but she works for a company in California. She pays CA SDI with each paycheck but now I'm wondering if she should have to since she actually lives and works in Florida. Tax lady sounds right, but "most" is a fuzzy term. Admittedly most operations are in CA but a significant portion is performed in FL, and my wife's job is entirely in FL. Never a need to go to CA. I suppose the true answer would come if she tried to claim benefits one day. I can see her payroll dept saying she has to pay it, and then when she files a claim it gets denied because she lives in FL. I can totally see that.

Voting Question: Should disability insurance be counted as income when unemployment is calculating your income for your check?
(Mon, 26 Oct 2009 02:53:54 GMT)
I have been on Unemployment in CA for 12 months and they have opened a new claim (something they do each 12 months) and they calculated the last 4 quarters which is way less than my original amt. The only thing I can think of as to why this is happening is because of my maternity leave that was taken around the time they are looking at the first quarter of the four...shouldn't disability count as income? Shouldn't they consider this income?

Voting Question: Semi Self-employed eligibility for CA-SDI?
(Tue, 29 Sep 2009 22:25:37 GMT)
Last year I was a temporary employee for a company for 8 months from April through December. The company paid into the CA-SDI fund as if I were a regular employee. This year I've been a consultant from January through the end of July. On August 1st, I had a serious bicycle accident and my primary doctor put me on disability for three months. Am I eligible for CA-SDI insurance because I worked for an employer last year? Looking at the web site, it seemed like I was eligible, but someone at the SDI office said I was defined as a consultant and therfore ineligible. One of the rules for being eligible is that you have to be working or looking for work before being disabled. I am wondering if their definition of working means being a W2 employee. Your advice is greatly appreciated.

Resolved Question: CA Workman's Comp; DISASTER Help?
(Fri, 28 Aug 2009 23:35:37 GMT)
Complicated Work Comp Case Basic Overview: A friend of mine has found himself in a horrible situation after 1 year of Work Comp case proceedings. The following facts are pertinent to his specific situation: IN BRIEF Employment History: 1. Employed with employer 20+ years 2. Almost no Disciplinary or problems with employer until Company recently merged with another company and has since become "Self Insured". 3. Company began making constant demands for employee to sign "At Will" and "Acknowledgment" there of documents. 4. Employee got first write up in 20 years and asked to sign "at will" at the time of write up. Upon refusal to do so due to the contract stating that he was to carefully consider what he was signing, he was forced to a new machine for "training purposes" that of which he initially believed a prior injury may had been exacerbated due to repetitive motion of his wrist. Industrial Injury History: 1. Old injury to wrist 10 years before; new injury appears to be separate injury but may be contributing to aggravation of the newly diagnosed mild carpal tunnel syndrome in both wrists. 2. Both past and present Injuries were sustained while with same employer New Injury: 1. Employee informed supervisor of swollen wrist while on new machine, he gave him wrapping gauze and sent him back to work. 2. 2 weeks later Employee went to emergency after a failed attempt to talk to the General Manager for swollen wrist and stress due to industrial injury as a result of being denied treatment. 3.Employer started immediate "fraud investigation". 4. Employer informed employee of UPN doctor he had to go to; employee complied not knowing rights at the time. 5. Employee sent to drug test; Doctor suitable to treat injuries was not in on the date of referral, also employer did not list the "wrist" injury, only listed "stress" on referral slip. 6. Employee returned to employer for correct referral slip and returned to UPN doctor who did no referral for psychiatric treatment and sent employee to get old medical records in part with return to work slip. 7. Employer had employee fill out wc form 1 almost a month after injury; he complied 8. Employer informed employee of need to separate claims; and verbal statement of denial saying "stress" is self inflicted due to detachment from machine. 9. Employee placed on Short Term Disability; pressured by employer to fill out FMLA forms and refused as it is industrial injury not FMLA related. 10. Employee obtained an Attorney 11. Employee complied with all doctor referrals from attorney 12. Employee wanted to get surgery and go back to work. ATTORNEY DISASTER/PRIORITY CONFERENCE 1. Employee sent formal request to attorney inclusive of questions as to why no expedite hearing had been requested in part with need for surgery, why he had been sent to a QME instead of a AME as informed in a letter, and why his deposition is scheduled after Priority Conference Date. 2. Attorney Request to Withdraw immediately 3. Attorney wont give original file 4. Attorney sent copy of file of 400+ papers mixed up that 5. Employee can't access WC WCAB file even after getting authorization from Sacramento; they claim 14 days for file to documents to be sent. 6. Copies of WC form sent in file copy from attorney state new claim for injury was submitted due to "harassment" without employees knowledge. No trace of original claim form (he does have a copy of the first one he actually filled out) 7. Attorney is still on record despite his claim to be relieved due to his request to Withdraw. 8. Employee just found out no medical records were entered on his behalf and priority conference is next week **Employee can't seem to be able to confirm insurance carrier of Employer. Nothing makes sense and Employee is breaking down. Is there any hope? Thank you kindly, any helpful suggestions are appreciated. Please consider the over whelming impact of such circumstance. How does he find an Attorney he can trust at this point? Aside from Cal State Bar...what can I help him do that is immediate? Thanks! Do you have any personal experience with that law firm?

Voting Question: Hospitalization for Disability Insurance?
(Mon, 24 Aug 2009 16:49:39 GMT)
I'm homeless and staying with my neighbor who recommended I see her Psychiatrist, pro bono, in order for me to try to get Disability. I don't think her Doctor likes me, but my roomy wants me to move out, even though she gave me another six months I thought, she told the Doc that she was depressed because of me, true or not, warranted or unwarranted, the Doc recommended that rather then me wait the additional 6 months or so at a shelter for me to qualify for Disability, that I admit myself into the hospital under the false pretense that I am suicidal and continue to insist that I am suicidal, that they will have to release me in San Jose Ca area because the hospitals are over-run with people and that this will skyrocket my chances of getting Disability right away and they will give me housing right away if I tell them I am homeless. Has anyone here ever been hospitalised with mental illness, and were also homeless and when you went in they gave you housing and Disability Insurance right away (I do not qualify for Unemployment Insurance)? I am afraid that the Doc is trying to trick me into getting into the hospital indefinately and that they won't really be able to offer me housing there... please can you tell me if you know if I can get this type of help if I follow her advice? Thank you so much for your help! I specifically heard the Doc say that they will offer me housing where I can take my two cats, rather than the Hospital directing me to a shelter which is what we're all trying to avoid, that's if I follow her advice and pretend to be suicidal in order to get in the Hospital... mainly I am concerned to know if a Hospital, Mental Health Social Worker there would have any type of ability to offer me Housing for both myself and two cats, not just a shelter, sorry to be redundant.

Resolved Question: In the State Of CA, can an injured worker claim temporary disability payments from the EDD while waiting...?
(Fri, 07 Aug 2009 11:51:49 GMT)
For the workmen's compensation insurance company to complete their investigations? Workmen's compensation carriers have the right to investigate for 90 prior to denying or accepting a claim. So what is one to do about money during those 3 months? Does that person qualify for temporary disability payments from the State while waiting those 3 months?

Resolved Question: In CA, can I apply for disability insurance if I owe money to unemployment?
(Tue, 21 Jul 2009 02:52:34 GMT)
I should be able to right? Since they both come out of different funds? I'm currently paying back money that I accidentally thought was my last paycheck, but now I'm pregnant and about to go on disability. So, it would really help to know whether I can or not, so that I can figure out my financial situation during my time out of work.

Resolved Question: PLEASE help with ? about SSI and marriage - really important?
(Thu, 19 Mar 2009 04:51:32 GMT)
Here's the deal. My husband has been on SSI for 8 yrs (we just got married) and it's due to a disability he has (rare bone disease) but he's not on SSDI, he's on SSI, So, now that we're married, I want to file my taxes & he's freaking out saying they're going to stop his benefits. Apparently he didn't think about this before we got married. So, he's telling me to lie & file as "single" but I can't do that. Doesn't the IRS know I'm married? He thinks if I file as married, that will put a red flag on him. I want to file as "married, filing separately" but he thinks any mention of marriage & my income will stop his benefits entirely. Is this true? Should I contact a tax attorney? My husband says it doesn't matter how much or how little I make, that if I file as married, I'm screwing him over. How is that? I'm so confused. I won't LIE to the government & put myself in that situation. If I'm married & file saying I'm single, wouldn't I get in trouble for that? I don't make that much. Around $40,000 to $50,000 per year & live in a high priced area in CA so that's not a lot around here. We have totally separate finances as well. I pay my own share of rent, car, utilities, insurance, all my personal stuff, cell phone, credit cards, etc. What should I do? He's furious with me that I might file as married & make him a target.

Resolved Question: Workers comp from bank of america in CA, is it only 2/3 of my pay and that's it?
(Mon, 02 Mar 2009 01:59:11 GMT)
I work at bank of america in california. I was injured at work last year and was on temporary disability for 2 months. I went through the whole process of filling up all the paper work and the workers comp insurance that bank of america uses paid me my 2/3 pay tax free. The adjuster told me the rest would be paid by bank of america. This part I understand. Aftter the whole ordeal I talked to the HR department about the 1/3 of my pay that I didn't receive because the offset on my pay stubs was a higher amount then I received from the workers comp, they told me they do not owe me any wages because what I receive from the workers comp insurance is the net income and they have to "gross it up" or "inflate the amount" for tax purposes to lower my reportable tax income at the end of the year. They also told me not to compare the amounts of what I received from workers comp and the offset they used on my paystub because one is the net income and the other is the gross income. This I do not get because I thought the whole amount is suppose to be tax free, and also I don't even know where that 1/3 of my pay actually goes to. Can they really just increase the offset amount like that? Are they trying to rip me off or is this how workers comp works?

Resolved Question: I don't have insurance, where do I get help for a learning disability?
(Tue, 17 Feb 2009 03:51:30 GMT)
CA: Recently I started college under the false pretenses that their would be help for me. After I started (and nearly failing three, might have failed the fourth) classes they told me, SORRY, you must have it documented. I let them know before hand that their was no way I could do it by myself and I DID NOT have documentation. I don't want to waste already several months in college what do I do? If your wondering my problem is it's hard for me to follow instructions, and questions. They leave me utterly confused, though I have remembered most of everything my grades do not reflect what I've learned. I was told once before I have Information Processing Disorder.

Resolved Question: Unemployment Insurance Extension in CA....?
(Fri, 13 Feb 2009 06:44:07 GMT)
Ok so my UI is almost up. As in I almost used up all the money I had for it (it was less than $11k) Im not to sure what the extension is for I know you only get like 52 weeks of UI. So is that what the extension is for? For people who used up the 52wks but still have "funds"? I was on Disability earlier in the year which is why I had so little UI money. If I run out of the money before the 52wks can I still extend it? Im very lost what the extension is and who qualifies. Oh.. It starts next week? So like my benefits had to be up by next week? Im lost. I calculate that my benefits will be up by Mid March - to Mid April. Will that be too late? What? No I didn't. Im on the original claim. I haven't had any extensions. Where did you get that form?

Resolved Question: Am I ineligible for CA unemployment insurance if I was on maternity leave?
(Thu, 15 Jan 2009 03:49:22 GMT)
I only got one answer in the business section, so I am seeing if you mommies know anything. I applied for unemployment because of having to leave my job (long story, but they screwed me over during my maternity making it impossible for me to return). I received a statement saying that I have $0 earnings in all quarters. In addition, when I emailed to let them know I couldn't get through over the phone (their system just tells you they cannot answer all call and hangs up on you), they said that statement means I am not eligible for unemployment. I don't understand. I've worked full-time for over two years straight, and had either part-time or full-time jobs in the five years since graduating college. I've always paid all my taxes. Does maternity leave really make me ineligible for unemployment benefits even though I've paid into the system for five years and NEVER collected any unemployment? Or is it probably some sort of mistake? I have contacted them back, but it took them over a week to get back to me the first time, so I thought I would try people on here. Additional details: I'm not on disability currently. I am able and available for work. I was on maternity leave (disability for six weeks then bonding for six weeks). During my maternity leave, my job changed their mind on my return to work options and I couldn't find childcare during the remaining time, so I had to quit.

(Wed, 07 Jan 2009 22:00:13 GMT)
I'm having problems in paying my medical bills!!! I recently got sick and have to be checked up by several hospitals and clinics. My insurance was cut off when I just turned 21 so my insurance didn't cover any of my visits to the doctors. I'm unemployed and i'm still a college student. I don't have any income at all... practically i'm still dependent under my parents. My mom doesn't work as well and only depends on the SSI? or disability? money (I don't know what's it called). I can't work because i'm focused on my studies and i'm taking care of my mom (crippled). Can you suggest any programs or services that can help me pay for the bills??? I'm at San Diego, CA. Just moved here 4 months ago...I already applied for the CMS program and i'm currently in the pending process so i'm not sure if i'm eligible or not at this point. please help me out!!!

Resolved Question: New LGBT equality laws go into effect in Calif.?
(Tue, 06 Jan 2009 01:43:53 GMT)
Three new laws broadening protections for California’s LGBT community have gone into effect. The laws protect seniors in assisted living and young people in schools and foster care. The Foster Youth School Safety Education Act helps protect foster youth against harassment and discrimination at school. The new law educates foster care youth and their caregivers about existing California laws that protect students against bias. It was authored by Assemblymember Julia Brownley (D) and supported by the National Association of Social Workers and the Gay-Straight Alliance Network. The second new law will help prevent bias in senior care facilities and nursing homes. Authored by former Sen. Carole Migden (D) it requires licensed healthcare professionals who have constant interaction with seniors to participate in a training program that focuses on preventing discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Many health professionals already receive cultural diversity training, but it does not include information and education about LGBT issues. Basic rights, such as the choice to live in the same nursing home with a partner and the right to hospital visitation are routinely denied to same-gender couples in older age, according to a 2000 study from the Policy Institute of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. The study also found that same-gender partners lack essential protections, including Medicaid benefits and access to pensions, which typically protect the homes and retirement funds of surviving spouses who are married. The third law is the Civil Rights Act of 2008. It strengthens existing law to ensure protections based on gender, race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, disability, medical condition, marital status and sexual orientation. The law clarifies sections of law that prohibit discrimination in insurance and government services and activities. In addition to support from EQCA, it was endorsed by the California State Conference of the NAACP. Looks like a reason for optimism in CA? Maybe prop. 8 will be overturned, no?

Voting Question: Don't come in/Come in - Lost Wages Issue...?
(Fri, 28 Nov 2008 21:53:09 GMT)
Don't Come in/Why didn't you come in? What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA Dear Sir or Ma'am, I live in California. Recently my brother was injured on the job. He wasn't able to work except for on light duty. [office work] His immediate boss had him off work for 2 weeks stating that there was no work to be done. His immediate boss had him complete and send in disability insurance/workers comp. It was returned by the state because the dr's portion was not filled out. He then called the dr he saw [where his work sent him initially] and was informed that she didn't fill out state paperwork. He called his corp. office [sm corp. under 100 ee's state wide i believe] and was told by his immediate boss's boss that he couldn't understand why my brother wasn't doing shop work. My brother explained he was told not to come in, which then enraged him and said he couldn't go see a dr for full disability insurance because he was on light-duty and should have been in the office. My brother is back to work today but we are curious if he has any monetary [or other] recourse; such as back-pay? Thank you for your time and honesty, Concerned in SoCal

Resolved Question: DISABLED w/ DEPRESSION w/ SDI, MediCare, MediCAl, Section 8-HUD...I want to move from CA to ORE...WHAT 2 DO?
(Sun, 12 Oct 2008 02:45:13 GMT)
I suffer from severe, chronic Depression and have been disabled for 14 years. I have lived alone in the same apartment for all 14 years and have been on Section 8 Housing Assistance, HUD, for 13 years. I receive both state MediCal and Federal MediCare Health insurance and I am a US Navy Veteran (not disabled w/ military and rarely use their services). My depression has stayed more or less the same all these years and I feel that a change from the monotonous environment and weather would help. I have also been suffering from high blood pressure, a low immune system and menopause and can't stand the heat. I'm miserable and am unable to exert myself in these warm conditions. I live in San Diego, CA and want to move somewhere around the Portland, OR area. I lived there until I was 19 and loved the area. I think an environment that has a change of seasons with both rain and snow and lots of green scenery would be better for me than the present day in, day out, sunny and too hot, concrete jungle I have lived in for too many years. I don't have a car...figured I'd U-haul it up there...and buy a car in Oregon where they don't have a state tax...So I would have to save for truck rental, gas, rent and deposit, and maybe the car...this will take me at least two years... I have contacted some agencies in Oregon and in San Diego by phone and by email...but I am not getting anywhere in finding out how to transition between the two states...My depression is telling me to just give up...but... then I found this website...Sooooooo.... HERE ARE MY QUESTIONS...??? I would need to save money for the move...How do I save the money without having to claim it as an asset on my yearly evaluation forms for Section 8 and MediCal? I need to transfer my Section 8 housing and find a residence...before I moved...How do I do this? If I saved $2,000.00 the first year and had $4,000.00 in two years for the move...Would this amount of "liquid assets" be detrimental to ANY of the monetary or service benefits I now receive? I would need state or federal Health Insurance in Oregon...does MediCal and MediCare transfer? or Do I have to be re-evaluated after I move there. I would need to transfer my Social Security Disability payments...OR...WOULD I HAVE TO BE RE-EVALUATED IN OREGON...to continue receiving SDI? WHAT ELSE would I NEED TO DO? Is there a SOCIAL or STATE or ADVOCATE AGENCY that could HELP ME arrange all these changes and help me make a smooth transition? I'd be thankful for any feedback...it would be one step of progress made on this slow journey.. GREATLY APPRECIATED Namaste'

I have to go to court tomorrow to appeal the state's doc's decision on June 6th that I am well enough to go back to work, although my doc has kept me off work since last November. Has anyone had this problem? Just hopping someone can help me with what to expect.

Resolved Question: Does it sound like I have a decent wrongful terminiation case?
(Fri, 19 Sep 2008 19:40:44 GMT)
I had been with my previous employer for 2 years. A great employee, never missed work, never was late. Exceeded my sales goals, and helped out in every way that I could. When I found out I was pregnant, I was diagnosed with hyperemesis gravidarum, and was constantly sick. I tried working through it at first, and was put in a hostile environment at work. My Dr took me off work, and I filed everything with my job. I was referred to their insurance company to work through my medical leave, and to receive short term disability benefits. It took a little while but everything was filed, I got a letter from my job saying that my leave was approved and a check for the disability. Great! I thought... I went to a doctors appointment only to find out that my medical insurance was canceled. I came home to find a Cobra Package in the mail, stating that my reason for Cobra was termination of employment. I thought it was a mistake, but when I contacted my employer, they confirmed that I was in fact terminated for job abandonment. They said that my leave was never approved, and I had abandoned my job. When I tried to show them the letter saying my leave was approved, they said it must have been a mistake and that I was terminated. I ended up in the hospital because of stress, and put on bed rest, so I let it go for a while, deciding that my unborn daughters health was far more important. Now I have had my daughter, and I was to settle this. I am in CA and have made an appointment with DFEH, but I am wondering if I have a case? I am going to be going up against a huge bank, (Wells Fargo) and their insurance company (MetLife). I'm nervous, but I feel they discriminated against me because of my pregnancy, and the condition that developed as a result of my pregnancy. Any advice would be so great appreciated!! Thank you!

Resolved Question: Unemployment insurance in CA?
(Sat, 13 Sep 2008 05:53:38 GMT)
I am currently on disability leave due to pregnancy. My employer has less than 50 employees so it doesn't guarantee my job back if I take PFL. I asked to return to work PT and I am waiting to get and answer. If I get a NO answer, can I qualify for Unemployment Insurance? If so, do I take PFL for additional 6 weeks and then apply for unemployment insurance? Please help me understand this...

Resolved Question: Can I temporarily live out of CA while collecting short term disability checks from SDI California?
(Tue, 06 May 2008 03:12:33 GMT)
I just had back fusion surgery and will be out of work for a few months. Is there any rule to prevent me from recovering in another less expensive state while still collecting State Disability Insurance payments? I will eventually be returning to work at my original job in California. Someone told me I must stay in California to continue qualifying for SDI. Any help will be appreciated.

Resolved Question: Am I judgement proof ?
(Wed, 30 Apr 2008 22:58:51 GMT)
I'm in CA and Disabled - Am I judgement proof for CC debt and my Credit Line ? I receive Social Security Disability (SSD) and Private Disability Insurance (LTD - Long Term Disability) from my old employer. I make less than $1,800 / mth. Can they pull money from my checking account where I direct deposit my SSD check ? My checking account is with the same creditor that my CC is with.

Resolved Question: Meidcal Insurance in CA?
(Sat, 29 Mar 2008 12:49:29 GMT)
If you are on temp disability and will be able to return back to work in 2months it has been 6 months so far and your employer continues pay your Blue Cross insurance. Blue Cross told me as long as your employer continues to pay your insurance you will not be terminated. Is that true?? And that if you are terminated your employer has to do it....thanks!

Voting Question: Are all the tax liabilities (Fed Taxes 941/944, etc) I paid for my business tax deductible on my 2007 taxes?
(Sun, 03 Feb 2008 18:56:09 GMT)
I'm wondering if I can claim all of my tax liabilities for my business on my 2007 taxes. I think I messed up on my 2006 taxes and didn't claim all of the tax liabilities I should have. I didn't claim the amount I spent on Federal Taxes (941/944), Federal Unemployment (940), CA SUI/ETT and CA PIT/SDI (Income Tax and State Disability Insurance).

Resolved Question: Should I still have to pay for my health insurance, when I'm on CA State Disability & CA Paid Family Leave?
(Fri, 26 Oct 2007 18:06:41 GMT)
I recently had a baby and was on CA State Disability & CA Paid Family Leave. I was still making payments to my employer every 2 weeks for health insurance just like when I was working. Is that right? It doesn't seem fair that if you aren't working and getting your normal wages that you should have to pay for your health insurance but then on the other side I was still using my medical coverage to have the baby and go to my post pregnancy appointments. Does anyone know the CA law on this issue?

Resolved Question: What would you do in this situation???
(Sun, 16 Sep 2007 12:34:34 GMT)
Situation: An airline employee with five years under her belt, I am currently six months pregnant and under CA state disability (SWA would not honor my doctor's request to keep me from lifting more than 15-lbs repeatedly. Customer service work requires one to lift up to 75-lbs without issues. I have a 10-month-old daughter already, delivered last year via C-section). For this other kid, I will be undergoing the same procedure--so pretty high-risk. Just recently, two managers from different companies invited me to apply for work-at-home job opportunities (no lifting, all legitimate computer work with bonuses). I would really love to go for them as a way to gain supplemental income (paying for medical insurance would not be a problem as salaries offered are pretty good). So, folks, will I end up losing my airline job once EDD disqualifies me from disability? I'm not exactly sure what will happen once I report being hired by other companies (when I become employed, that is). If and when I do apply for these two other companies, I will have to pay for a separate insurance plan (which isn't a problem). The reason why I'm going for them is not only because of my fragile C-section scar, but the fact is, I want to be there for my kids until they are old enough to go to school. My grandparents are already helping me with my daughter; however, they have physical limitations, too. I'd like to be able to assist them and spend time with my kids while making ends meet, financially.

Resolved Question: Are rates for disability insurance different in different states?
(Tue, 31 Jul 2007 03:43:00 GMT)
To clarify: I own Guardian own-occupation disability insurance, which was initiated in California. Given a recent income increase, I am eligible to exercise a rider to increase my disability coverage. Are my premiums going to go up a different amount if I increase my coverage through my agent in CA than if I increase it through a different agent, say, in Ohio? Are these riders and insurance premiums nationally uniform for personal disability insurance plans through Guardian?

Resolved Question: CASDI vs. CAVPDI?
(Sat, 16 Jun 2007 00:04:59 GMT)
I have a question for California residents or for anybody who knows about this. What is the difference between CA SDI (California State Disability Insurance) and CAVPDI (California Voluntary Plan Disability Insurance) ? This item usually appears on box 14, of W-2 form. I heard CASDI can be use for tax deduction, but CAVPDI can not . is this true ?

Resolved Question: Full Time Employment or Contractor (diff states)?
(Mon, 04 Jun 2007 22:21:54 GMT)
I'm currently working as an hourly worker for my employer and am trying to decide if I should convert to full time status. I could use some input from others who might know more about this. Facts: - I'm married. - Wife is employed full time. - Benefits through wife - Disability insurance available from my employer (minor deduction on paycheck) - No matching on 401K (I have my own IRA anyway) - I receive a W2 - Earn $75 per hour - Bill about 35 hours per week - Work from home in CA employer in diff state - Rent apartment - No kids for what its worth I'm trying to determine if its worth going full time or if there is a better tax situation in my current scenario. I'm not sure how to determine this on my own so I hoped someone here might be able to provide input. Thanks.
