Open Question: Benefits after military medical retirement?
(Fri, 12 Mar 2010 01:48:34 GMT)
Ok i have asked this before in a different way and i am asking again maybe someone can give me some insight. I know about the VA and we have a lawyer we see tomorrow but i was just trying to get and idea. We are worried about keeping our medical right now were sitting at80% disability rating with 75% of our base pay on temporary retirement where he will have to go in every 18 months for review and it can get changed. I know you keep you medical benefits at where we are sitting now what is the lowest rating you can go to for your disability rating i think it is 30% and still keep your medical benefits. I know if you get less than 30% they give you a pat on the back and a severance package but over i believe you keep your benefits. Am i wrong does anyone know because i cannot seem to find it in any info about it anywhere. Oh also does anyone know if we keep our dental?? HELP PLZ!

Open Question: I need a job! Can I please vent to you friend?
(Fri, 12 Mar 2010 01:33:05 GMT)
I have a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a Minor in Special Education. I am working at a day care and I make half as much as I should be... I cannot find a job in my area due to potential teaching retirees waiting for their own great retirement incentives. I substitute taught for a year, but the schedule and pay were so up-in-the-air, so I had to find something a bit more stable... I settled for this current job in a day care and I cannot find anything in Elementary Education! I have two kids, a mortgage, student loans, bills, etc. to pay for and what I have now is not cutting it!!! My husband has a Bachelor's in Science and Technology and he searched everywhere for a job. He settled for selling Red Bull out of the back of his Red Bull truck. We don't know what else to do. I'm online every night looking for a job and no luck... every day... every day... I broke down today on my lunch break today. I was balling. I am literally getting depressed because I tried so hard in college. I made Dean's List several times and I am in the same professional and monetary position I would have been if I had never went to college. It's depressing beyond words friends. Any kind words are appreciated. Thank you. I'm so afraid that if I found a job down south, my husband wouldn't be able to find one--or vice-a-versa.

Open Question: Did the Gov. give us a separate maintainace decree when they excluded me from his social security and med?
(Fri, 12 Mar 2010 01:05:06 GMT)
My husband and I were living together in the same home when he retired and I was excluded from his social security and medicare benefits because i have not reach retirement age yet. I wanted to file head of household on my tax return because it was clear to me that I am on my own but mainly because we have minor children in the home and need the credits.. I was told I could not do so because my husband had to be living out of the home for 6 months..? Since that is one of the test that must be met and requires that we have "a separate maintanace decree" I just could not understand why the IRS and S.S. don't know or understand that they already seperated us.If we file married , they go in and recalculate our taxes by using my little gov. pension to see how much his S.S. is taxable and I don't think that is fair either since I do not share in any of his benefits. Neither of us have outside jobs. Do you think this "wifeless" S.S.entitlement letter my husband received for himself "only" is considered a "seperate maintanance decree"? Is this one of the reasons seniors would get divorced in their retirement" Shame !Shame!

Open Question: what's my ailment? please help?
(Fri, 12 Mar 2010 00:36:20 GMT)
i'm in a foreign country away from my family. i'm in my early 40's. medium built. doing 50 push-ups every other day. been here for 7 months now. i started feeling pain in my right ribs 4 months ago and i thought it was only muscle pain or the weather then (8 degrees C) and it was tolerable then. i haven't had any accident. then the pain escalates now to the point that i'm shouting in my pillows because i don't want to be heard by my co-workers adjacent to my room. i don't want to go to hospital for fear that the result will lead to my early retirement. i couldn't afford to go home early because of our present economic plight (i still have to pay a lot of debts back in my home country and my family still needs remittance) and i'm almost sure that the result would be serious. recently, sores on my right ribs appeared and the pain is almost unbearable especially on nighttime. i virtually could not sleep when it attacks at least thrice a week. i could still work though, in each and every attack. just tell me what's causing this pain. professional opinion please. i really don't want to go to a hospital. and i am ready to endure this. thank you.

Open Question: Investing money CD account, Money market etc etc.?
(Thu, 11 Mar 2010 19:45:25 GMT)
I was wondering what would be best as investment. I'm 24 now and I had my savings account with chase for long term retirement. They are saying I should change the account around since the 13month is due to open in two months. I agreed cause the interest is .25% with no change. Chase said a money market would be best, but I don't want to put all the money there. I was wondering, do you think the money market idea is good at all? This is for long term investment like 4 decades from now. Should i put some money in to ING Direct Orange CD? Is there another place with higher interest return?

Open Question: How do I get my husband to be more financially responsible?
(Thu, 11 Mar 2010 14:38:01 GMT)
When my husband and I got married, I had NO debt and he already had a high debt load. We have used up all my savings in support of paying his bills. Now that he's gotten a higher paying job, he is blowing all his money on buying random things which add up. Presents to his entire side of the family, big nights out, electronic gadgets, etc. We still have no savings. How do I get him to understand that we need to discuss big purchases (e.g. he's just spent US$ 2,000 on buying presents for HIS family) and that we need to start saving??? He thinks that we can dip into our retirement fund whenever he feels like it. ARGH!

Resolved Question: Would Americans be better off if the government left us to look after ourselves?
(Thu, 11 Mar 2010 10:48:09 GMT)
I don't want the public school system-I can provide for my kids education just fine. I don't want social security-I can save for my own retirement thank you. I don't need Obamacare-I can get excellent care in the free market. In fact if the government would stop "providing" for Americans, two amazing things would happen. 1) Our hellish debt could immediately be brought under control 2) The economy and job creation would immediately rev up. How? The government would no longer have any excuse to seize 1/2 of everything I have to waste on mismanaged programs that are bankrupting our nation. I could provide for myself and keep my pay to spend as I chose

Open Question: comming out of retirement. i dont think floyd mayweather is afraid of pacquiao?
(Thu, 11 Mar 2010 09:06:08 GMT)
on the height of the pound for pound king, pacquiaos reign of supreme dominance. fLyod suddenly comes back to the scene. knowing poeple would have this curiousity for a mega fight between him and the man kicking everyones @SS. i really think that floyd is playing a game, to hype and build such a huge suspense and demand for a mega showdown with pacquiao. i think pacquaio will take of clottey in the 9th or 10th round. and i think flyod will edge mosley. setting up pound 4 pound king fight.. i think that was mayweathers plan all along. cause why else would flyod come back in a time when all eyes is on pacquiao? i dont think he did it to take all this BS and criticism from everybody.. it just dont make sence for him to ruin his rep. by comming back intending to avoid the man at the throne.

Open Question: WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR RETIREMENT BENEFITS? Pension under the Employment Retirement Income Security Act of 1974?
(Thu, 11 Mar 2010 09:03:31 GMT)
My father, 51, had been an hourly worker in a machine shop of for 21 years and four months. On a Christmas holiday, he suffered a severe heart attack and was hospitalized for three weeks. At his release, his doctor said he was to rest at home for a couple of months. After his recuperation period, his doctor, along with his company’s physicians, was to decide whether or not my father should retired for disability reasons. They never got the opportunity to make this decision; in February, my father died of a second heart attack. He left my mother, four sons, two daughters and two-daughters in-law. His wife, my mother, still had four children at home. As part of my father's estate, my mother received the normal group insurance payments, the balance of his savings plan account, and the other benefits due her. However, my mother did not receive a pension from the company as a survivor of an eligible employee. When my mother and the company representatives had discussed the settlement, my mother had inquired about my father's pension and about my mother's right to receive it. The human resource department had stated that since contributions to this fund were made only by the company, no survivor’s benefits were provided. 1.What do you think my mother should do at this point? 2.What does the Employment Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 have to say about this issue?

In the high school I go to, there's a really old man who works as one of the maintanence crew. He's 64years old and still is working. I asked him about retiring but he says he loves to work. His age doesn't affect his job though, he's always hyper so he never falls asleep on the job and he does not use a cane or any kind of support. Could they force him, or anyone to retire?

Open Question: Help with finance homework PLEASE?
(Thu, 11 Mar 2010 01:29:50 GMT)
HW #4 1)You are offered the opportunity to put some money away for retirement. You will receive five annual payments of $25,000. How much would you be willing to invest today if you desire an interest rate of 12%? 2)You are prepared to make monthly payment of $225, beginning at the end of this month, into an account that pays 9 percent interest compounded monthly. What is the effective annual interest rate? How many payments will you have made when your account balance reaches $20,000? 3)You have recently finished your MBA at the Iona College. Naturally, you are going to purchase a new BMW. The car costs about $30,000. The bank quotes an interest rate of 15 percent APR for a 72-month loan with a 10 percent down payment. What will your monthly payment be? What will the loan balance be when you sell the car two years later from now?

Open Question: Conservatives and liberals, republicans and democrats...?
(Thu, 11 Mar 2010 01:02:19 GMT)
we know the system is rigged against us. The top tier earners, who own both political parties, are laughing all the way to the bank while we battle it out here on YA and call each other names. So my question is... when do we take our country back? When does the bleeding of jobs, homes, retirement accounts, etc stop? Or do we let them have their way and their cake and we end up like Rome? And no.. it's not the goverment, although that can use a disinfectant as well. Trickle down never amounted to a piddle and those that pushed and stuck up for it should be ashamed.

(Wed, 10 Mar 2010 23:54:12 GMT)
I love College Basketball and it's my favorite I was a much bigger NBA fan until Michael Jordan's retirement and find College Basketball 10x better now everybody has their own opinions on which is better but what I'm saying is... there's almost no posts on College Basketball, and it's tough to even get 4 answers when you ask a College Basketball question. There are more NCAA questions during the tournament and alot of NCAA users which is great though Am I the only person that would like to see more College Basketball questions in this section? BQ- Aside from not having College BBall the NBA discussions in here are horrible. There's a bunch of uneducated questions and answers and childishness on here. It's hard to have quality talks about the NBA except for certain good contributers. What has happened to good discussions about basketball here?

Open Question: How much should we increase taxes and fees to pay for retirees?
(Wed, 10 Mar 2010 23:36:39 GMT)
Cities are broke because of the Bush economy. Once again citizens are making bad choices by not investing in their future. The bad news is that many of them are selling buildings (Cincinatti wants to sell City Hall), cut salaries of government workers, or reduce other higher-paid retirement funds. The good news is that many cities are devising property tax increases, sales tax increases, and new utility bill fees. What other mechanisms will make this possible for governments to keep operating? But the people (thats you) are the government. So you are responsible for this mess.

Open Question: How should I finish my short story?
(Wed, 10 Mar 2010 23:31:33 GMT)
I am writing a short story for school. It is suposed to have a strong emphasis on theme. I started writing one. It is 300 words now and needs to be 1000. Any ideas on how to finish? Jeff Hayes never thought it would come to this. That he would be on the outside looking in, or the inside looking out, however you want to think about it. For the past year he was always a couple steps ahead of everyone else, until they finally caught up to him. It started off small, but Jeff just couldn’t help himself. *** one year ago *** Jeff was worried, what was he going to do about his retirement? He was all set to receive a hefty pension in three years, after all he was the chief of police. When he was informed of the financial cutbacks, Jeff was devastated. He had no investments, and only enough savings for a couple of years. He was only 58 years old, he thought he still had some good years left before he would sit and do nothing. He needed to think of something, and fast. After weeks of brainstorming and coming no closer to an answer, it hit him when he least expected it. He was about to take down one of the city’s larger drug importers, he just needed some extra evidence. Jeff was shocked when the man, Jermaine Taylor, called him off the record. For some reason, maybe fate, Jeff decided to answer, and his life was never the same. “Listen Hayes, I think we can both help each other out here,” said Taylor. “What do you mean?” Jeff replied. “What I mean is that I know about the pension, and you know about my business dealings. How about we help each other make that go away. I’ll give you $20,000 right now to back off,” answered Taylor. “OK,” said Jeff.

Resolved Question: To the Conservative Right?
(Wed, 10 Mar 2010 18:35:59 GMT)
Of which I am one of. I am approaching retirement at an accerating rate, and I have been thinking of what the future may hold for me. For what ever reason doing something wild keeps popping into mind. Something that you would not do now if you were gainfully employed. What one thing(s) would they be? I'm not talking bucket list items, that sound rather terminal to me.

Open Question: What do you think of this story...?
(Wed, 10 Mar 2010 15:17:01 GMT)
This came from The Motley Fool (AN INVESTING INFORMATION SITE): http://www.fool.com/ : Do you know Jack? Our quick-but-powerful story starts with two twins: Jack and Jill. As they turn 18, Jack takes a job out of high school and begins investing. From age 18 to 30 -- when he gets married and has his first kid -- Jack socks away five grand a year. Then he stops. Jill, meanwhile, goes to college and then medical school. She starts saving at 30 -- the same $5,000 per year. Both invest in the stock market, earning a long-term average of 11% a year. But by age 65, the difference in their financial fortunes will shock you: Jill, who contributed for 35 years straight, will have $1.9 million. But Jack, who invested for only 12 years, actually has $4.9 million ... thanks to his head start! Could you use $4.9 million for your retirement? Isn't that amazing???

Open Question: debt relief order I have been advised to apply for a debt relief order and wondered if anyone had any advice?
(Wed, 10 Mar 2010 13:58:56 GMT)
I have about £13000 debts and have been paying a certain amount off each month via CCCS. However due to health implications, I have asked for voluntary redundancy although I am at retirement age I was not due to retire until December. I have been advised by CCCS that I should apply for a debt relief order to deal with my debts rather than go bankrupt, after they had worked out my income I would just have a state pension with pension creidt. I am a council tenant so would get help with rent and council tax. However if I got the redundancy payment I would like to pay back my son in law who has lent me money over the last ten years or so who is now himself in financial difficulty. This would probably leave me with about £2000 - would this affect the debt relief order or would they expect me to pay part of my debts with the redundancy payment.

Open Question: Suppose I punch out my soon to be ex-boss.?
(Wed, 10 Mar 2010 13:07:40 GMT)
Here's my story, sorry if it's a bit lengthy. At the tragic expense of my grandfather's sudden and early death, I've recived my multi-million dollar inheritence earlier than anticipated. He was an executive for Warren Buffets Berkshire Hathaway and bought up several hundred shares of stock while they were dirt cheap. My current financial situation is this: A 41 year annuity of $207'000.00 a year (Actually direct deposits monthly.) Also a secluded cabin in the Hawaiian islands as my permanent residence, and 1.5 Million remaining in uncommited dollars spread out in three bank accounts, that will be my retirement when my annuity runs out at the age of 61. As you can see, I'm a 20 years man and set for life. Further more, and you can correct me if I'm wrong about this, that's why I'm here asking, but it would seem that I have nothing to lose when I go in for my final check. You see, a week from this friday, I go in for my final check. I am assistant manager at a golf course and absolutly despise the boss. She has made the last year of my life miserable, and instead of going out with a handshake, I'm thinking of going out with a literal bang. Because, I live in Pensacola county Florida, and my flight to my new life in Hawaii is 11am a week from friday in Tampa. So, two hours before the flight, I get there at opening at 9am, noone else is there, I get my check, rough her up a bit then high tail it out of there. This is my opinion: Even though Tampa, the location of an airport is a neighboring county, the process of extradition remains nonetheless. So, even if she can tell the police I'm there (Which I do not believe she would know), there would be way too much legistical stuff to be able to get me before the flight takes off. (Even if they did, i could pay my bail, then leave, and consider it worth it.) As single mom collecting child support, we can rule out her suing. She would not only have travel expense that she likely cannot afford, but there's absolutly no way on earth she can afford an attorney who can take on the one I hire. Not to sound like I'm gloating, but I can afford any attorney on earth, she cannot. Expect her to not even consider civil action. I don't like her attitude, but she's not downright stupid. Last but not least, this IS a repost. I'm asking again because last time everyone was talking about extradition. Consider it this way: The DA is going to pay out of his budget, provided by taxpayers, to have me extradited all the way back from Hawaii over a simple assualt charge. He's gonna cover the expense of my arrest in Hawaii, and pay to put me on a plane, and fly me halfway across the pacific just to get to the west coast, than transfer planes on or two times back to tampa? Simple assault charge? I think we can rule out extradition of that distance for 90 % of all crimes. So, am I foolproof. Pea pod: I have to be tried in the county in which the crime was committed. Perhaps your not a US resident, but here that's the way it works regardless of what country's "soil" I'm on.

Resolved Question: Please share your thoughts on this quote from George Carlin?
(Wed, 10 Mar 2010 12:52:01 GMT)
“The most unfair thing about life is the way it ends. I mean, life is tough. It takes up a lot of your time. What do you get at the end of it? A Death! What's that, a bonus? I think the life cycle is all backwards. You should die first, get it out of the way. Then you live in an old age home. You get kicked out when you're too young, you get a gold watch, you go to work. You work forty years until you're young enough to enjoy your retirement. You do drugs, alcohol, you party, you get ready for high school. You go to grade school, you become a kid, you play, you have no responsibilities, you become a little baby, you go back into the womb, you spend your last nine months floating... ...and you finish off as an orgasm.” Thank You, AJ
